The series referential comedy and self-indulgent nonsensicality resonated especially strongly with fans online, who appreciated how perfectly My Deer Friend Nokotan caters to modern internet humor sensibilities. While the bizarreness of the show makes it seem one of a kind, My Deer Friend Nokotan resembles many similar surreal anime comedies where the most illogical of situations become reality. Horimiya's unique storytelling format required adaptation to create a cohesive love story for Hori and Miyamura. The 4-koma format limited the original plot's depth, leading to the anime's focused development of the romantic narrative. Director Masashi Ishihama aimed to bring more romantic comedies to Japan through the refreshing take on Horimiya.

Its not usual to see the genre romance paired together with the shonen demographic, but when they are, its usually in reference to a major hit like Horimiya. That is not the only factor that makes the romcom special, though. The source material for this anime is a webcomic that is in a 4-koma format, which is to say, each chapter is made up of only 4 panels. This inevitably makes the story feel more like a comic strip than a cohesively placed narrative, making it almost impossible to watch the anime in the same order the comics were released.

Anime is a versatile medium that's able to effortlessly tackle different genres, whether that's romance, action, horror, or even wild comedic tangents. Plenty of anime are full of comedic moments and even some of the medium's more serious series like Cowboy Bebop and Neon Genesis Evangelion still indulge in big laughs. However, there is also a special breed of comedic anime that delight in pushing boundaries and breaking reality to better service outrageous gags at an overwhelming pace.

Gag anime prioritize jokes above everything else, which often results in humor that must be seen to be believed. Gag comedy anime can be an acquired taste, but there are some wonderful and weird examples to check out.

Bandai Namco’s colorful rhythm game series “Taiko no Tatsujin,” known to Western gamers as “Taiko: Drum Master,” is coming westward for its first English-language release in 14 years. Fans can look forward to two new games scheduled for a November release: “Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum ‘n’ Fun!” for Nintendo Switch and “Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum Session!” for PlayStation 4. Interestingly, the series won’t be going back to the Westernized “Taiko: Drum Master” moniker bestowed upon it when the game and drum peripheral first debuted in 2004 on PlayStation 2.
