The team behind The Traitors UK has come up with another mystery format located in a grand setting, this time for Channel 4.
Studio Lambert is making The Inheritance for the network. With more than a shade or two of The Traitors, The Inheritance sees 12 strangers arrive at a grand English country estate, lured by the opportunity to inherit a chunk of a fortune. The fortune belonged to a glamorous benefactor known only as The Deceased who has left video messages for the players from beyond the grave. To release money from The Inheritance, players must work as a team to complete a series of challenges. To win the game they must persuade all others that only they should be entrusted with the money.
Speaking at a Channel 4 showcase in London today, entertainment boss Steven Handley teased that The Deceased will be played by a “British icon.”

Writer-Director Neil Burger boasts quite a diverse catalog of films, ranging from sci-fi action flicks like Divergent and Limitless to the romantic mystery period film The Illusionist and the psychological crime thriller adaptation The Marsh King's Daughter. His latest, Inheritance, now takes him into the world of spy thrillers, following a woman who discovers her father's past in espionage, unknowingly thrusting her into the heart of an international conspiracy. There's no predicting what he has planned next given his range, but, fortunately, there's no need to do any guessing because he already has a few plans in motion. In an interview with Collider's Steve Weintraub for Inheritance, he opened up about two ideas that are next on the docket, including a biopic that he was able to pull back the curtain on ever so slightly.

As she continues to branch out from her career-starting role as Daphne Bridgerton in the first two seasons of Netflix’s hit period drama, Bridgerton, Phoebe Dynevor has been busy dipping her toes into multiple genres. Showing off her skills in psychological thrillers and dramas, the actress’ upcoming project, Inheritance, tosses her into the world of spies and intrigue alongside Rhys Ifans. Beyond that, she has several other irons in the fire, including Tommy Wirkola’s Beneath the Storm and Jody Hill’s Famous. We’ve still got some time to wait until both of those films arrive in cinemas, but thanks to Collider’s Steve Weintraub, we’ve got some fresh intel for all the Dynevor fans out there.

As the end of the first month of 2025 approaches, cinema fans can expect a few more treats through streaming, theaters, and VOD. Horror fans, in particular, will have their fill of content. Shudder delivers an unnerving tale of social spiraling and skin ripping with Grafted, Steven Soderbergh delivers supernatural thrills with Presence, and Robert Eggers' Nosferatu lurks its way onto VOD. At the same time, two lesser-discussed terrors making their way to VOD in Bystanders and Into The Deep might make for a pleasant surprise.
Theaters will also see two new notable releases: Mel Gibson's Flight Risk taking off and a new thriller from Neil Beger in Inheritance. With plenty to watch, these are our top movies you must check out this weekend. Info on all notable releases and where to watch them are listed below.

In Inheritance, when Maya (Phoebe Dynevor) learns that her father (Rhys Ifans) was once a spy, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an international conspiracy. In her quest for answers, Maya becomes a target and must travel the globe, mastering her father’s skills and unraveling the mysteries of his past in this gripping espionage thriller.
What makes this movie - helmed by Limitless director Neil Burger - particularly unique is the fact it was essentially produced undercover. Filmed using an iPhone, Inheritance was shot without the people surrounding Dynevor and Ifans knowing what was happening...or that they were extras!
As you can probably imagine, that presented Burger with a lot of very unique challenges as a filmmaker. Earlier this month, we sat down with him to learn more about how he approached shooting this edge-of-your-seat thriller.

Right from the opening of Neil Burger’s Inheritance (2025), a generic quality clouds the circumstances. In the wake of loss, a young woman, who had been previously constrained by duty, flings herself through a bout of reckless disrepair. She goes through the beats of a wasted party girl, hooking up and hurling a stab at private happiness, a thing she has not experienced in a while.
Maya (Phoebe Dynevor) can barely cope in the shadow of her mother’s passing. Quickly we learn that she used to be the primary caretaker of her mother in her final few months. She wholly subsumed herself in the responsibility. Can she exceed this, and become someone with her individual personhood and affiliations in place? The film unfolds as a journey of finding her identity that has so long been buried under responsibilities and burdens. Looking after her mother scraped out every bit of...

When reviewing a film, reading the director’s statement can feel an awful lot like checking their will. What an artist intended with the choices they left behind won’t always matter to the audience, but Neil Burger’s “Inheritance” is worth researching before you buy the ticket. Knowing how this strangely pedestrian thriller got produced not only makes it far more enjoyable to watch but highlights a new storytelling approach that might work better on the second try.
Captured on location in Egypt, India, South Korea, and New York City, IFC Films’ latest experiment in suspense — a father-daughter espionage adventure starring Phoebe Dynevor and Rhys Ifans — uses a naturalistic shooting style that spurred some great behind-the-scenes stories. Known for films like “Limitless” and “Divergent,” Burger aimed to make another slippery psychological drama with mainstream action appeal, but this time, he tried to give it some added oomph by boosting the authenticity.

House of the Dragon will take some time to fly on TV screens again, meaning a long wait for fans who enjoyed Season 2 last summer. However, one of the Game of Thrones prequel's actors offers a hopeful update to those anxious to see more of the show.
Speaking with Screen Rant, House of the Dragon star Rhys Ifans was asked for a progress update on Season 3 and when fans can expect to see the show hit screens again. Though he jokingly suggested Season 3 would become available "in about 25 years time," he suggested production would commence soon. "I don't know. I don't know, but I can smell the sulfur. [Chuckles] There's something brewing. I can say, yeah, they start shooting soon this year, so I'm sure you'll be able to watch it in about 25 years' time. [Chuckles]," he said.

'Inheritance' Review: Phoebe Dynevor Is a Sardonic Spy Kid in Not-So-Thrilling, iPhone-Shot Thriller
Pulling off a good spy thriller is no easy feat. You’ve got to have strong intrigue, pulse-pounding action, and oftentimes a slick, slightly dangerous protagonist to root for as they try to save the world from destruction. Alas, sometimes a film lacks all three, such as with writer-director Neil Burger’s latest endeavor, Inheritance. This sleepy spy movie stars Phoebe Dynevor as a young woman thrown into the dangerous world of espionage when her estranged father and former spy (Rhys Ifans) comes back into her life. Boasting none of the genre’s expected excitement, Inheritance offers a slow-moving story rife with family secrets and Apple product placement that, while impressively shot entirely with an iPhone, will likely leave you reaching for yours in search of some better entertainment.

Netflix's smash hit Bridgerton became the launching point for many careers, as names such as Wicked's Jonathan Bailey and Nicola Coughlan were shot into superstardom. Another that has found similar success is Phoebe Dynevor, known for playing Daphne between 2020 and 2022, who has since appeared in the likes of The Colour Room, Bank of Dave, and 2023's Fair Play. Now, she is back on our screens, set to star in the pulse-racing spy thriller, Inheritance.

Some binge-worthy TV shows center on a group of people and their shared love — of each other (Friends), themselves (Seinfeld), politics (Veep), television (30 Rock), technology (Silicon Valley), science (The Big Bang Theory), and more. This year, a new series will center on an ensemble of dudes who bond over a mutual adoration for automobiles. Sound familiar? Maybe you could be part of the clique yourself. Whether you're a real-life car fiend or simply in the mood for a new series with its own fresh angle, Motorheads is coming to Prime Video, with an exciting cast led by Ryan Phillippe, alongside Nathalie Kelley, Michael Cimino, Melissa Collazo, and more.
MovieWeb recently caught up with the director of the pilot and second episode, acclaimed filmmaker Neil Burger, while he was promoting his new film, Inheritance. Burger took time to plug Motorheads and what we can expect. "It's kind of a lovely show,...

When drama is brewing before your very eyes, what might be the first thing you grab? The shoulder of the person next to you, in fear? Or maybe that iPhone of yours, resting in your pocket or handbag, to capture what's ensuing for the sake of documenting this crazed public scenario. But be careful — you don't want to get caught filming by the wrong person, or there could be dire consequences. There's something edgy about filming covertly when you're not really supposed to, and this adrenaline rush is what fuels the new IFC Films release Inheritance, from co-writer and director Neil Burger.
Starring Phoebe Dynevor (Bridgerton) like you've never seen her before, Inheritance is thus shot entirely on iPhones, and don't let that stir you the wrong way. This sprawling, international spy film keeps you gripped from start to finish, and MovieWeb recently caught up with director Neil Burger to find out more.

If it weren’t for the empty adjustable hospital bed in the room, it would seem like Maya’s (Phoebe Dynevor) story is a lot like any other film about 20-somethings living in New York City: she steps out into the night, nicks a bottle of booze from a liquor store and proceeds to take hearty swigs of her purloined goods in public; she dances in a club with the abandon of someone avoiding life’s sobering troubles; she accepts the advances of a stranger. The two end up in bed together, and then, moments later, the stranger is gone. For a brief moment, we’re in the throes of a young woman’s existential journey set in The City That Never Sleeps. This isn’t that type of movie, however; it’s actually an international spy thriller directed by Neil Burger.

Regardless of the ultimate reception and box office performance, Inheritance is assured to be one of the more unique movies of the year. But that’s because of how it was made: the movie was shot entirely on an iPhone. And not just that, it was filmed guerilla-style, meaning much of the movie was shot without explicit filming permissions. The cast and (very small) crew would arrive on location, go over what they needed, and go. But for some, a lot of that will amount to nothing more than some fun behind-the-scenes trivia. What’s the end result for Inheritance as a whole?

Shot guerilla-style in various urban locations with an iPhone and a small crew, Inheritance represents something of a return to director Neil Burger’s more experimental beginnings, particularly the faux-documentary approach of his feature debut Interview with the Assassin. Unfortunately, this would-be gritty espionage thriller has no more originality, depth, or thematic complexity than Burger’s biggest commercial success, the facile YA sci-fi adaptation Divergent, and it’s left oddly stranded between two opposing, mutually destructive sensibilities.
The film is centered on Maya (Phoebe Dynevor), a young woman whose sense of disaffection is partly mirrored by the vérité camera that tracks her impatiently throughout. After a brief opening sequence in which she engages in a number of “risky” activities—shoplifting a bottle of vodka, engaging in a dispassionate one-night stand, smoking a cig with her legs dangling out the window of her high-rise NYC apartment—Maya’s unconvincing emotional turmoil...

Neil Burger’s shot-on-an-iPhone globe-trotting thriller Inheritance begins on a New York City street. In description, “Inheritance” sounds like one of those movies that’s about the gimmickry of its own making: A spy thriller shot entirely on iPhone, with many scenes staged in public without permits for added urgency and spontaneity. But this latest feature from Neil Burger, who co-wrote the script with spy novelist Olen Steinhauer, ultimately transcends mere novelty by having an even smaller-scale gist than you’d expect. For all its multinational sprawl and intimations of high peril, the film is ultimately a two-person drama about a daughter (Phoebe Dynevor) finding out who her long-absent father (Rhys Ifans) really is. What she learns is bitter, but also dramatically satisfying enough to make this release, hitting theaters from IFC Films on Friday, feel like something more than just one more low-budget action movie with familiar faces.

After shooting a pair of feature films strictly on iPhones, the iconic Steven Soderbergh once stated at Sundance that he sees no reason why the rest of his movies shouldn’t be captured as such. Bridgerton's Phoebe Dyneover reflects on her career following her breakout role as Daphne and touches on a possible return to the Netflix series. In the role of Daphne Bridgerton, later Daphne Basset, Dyneover was a factor in the initial success of the Julia Quinn adaptation. She would become one of the show's first standouts, alongside scene partner Regé-Jean Page, and has earned praise for her performance in the thriller Fair Play opposite Alden Ehrenreich. She'll next lead the espionage action film Inheritance, which will be released in theaters on January 24.

She says it's been “an interesting few years”, noting how Bridgerton season 1 came out early on in the Covid-19 pandemic and Fair Play was released amidst the actors' strike in the later months of 2023. HBO has been on a winner with House of the Dragon, reviving the fortunes of the Game of Thrones franchise after the polarizing finale of the flagship series. However, they have not exactly been rushing Season 3 into production despite fan demand. Now one star of the series has given a positive update on when Season 3 could begin filming…but also joked that there could be another quarter of a century wait for it to hit screens. We really hope he is joking!
Obviously, it is not going to be 25 years before House of the Dragon returns to HBO, but Otto Hightower actor Rhys Ifans’ humorous appraisal of the tardy pace of the series development will certainly resonate with those who just want to see the next episodes movie forward in some way. Considering the series has only released two seasons in six years, his exaggeration is only slightly beyond the believeable.

HBO was confident in the show's future, however, as they confirmed House of the Dragon season 3 prior to season 2's premiere.

Two years have gone by since we heard that director Steven C. Miller (Silent Night) was heading into production on a werewolf horror film that, at the time, was going by the title Year 2. Earlier this month, the film was given a wide theatrical release in the United States under the title Werewolves – and over the holidays, it was also given a VOD release! Werewolves is available to rent on Amazon for the price of $19.99, or purchase for $24.99.
Starring Frank Grillo of the Purge and Captain America franchises, Werewolves shows us that a supermoon event triggered a latent gene in every human on the planet, turning anyone who entered the moonlight into a werewolf for that one night. Chaos ensued and close to a billion people died. Now, a year later, the Supermoon is back.

Werewolves, originally titled Year 2, begins a year after a supermoon turned everyone who was exposed to it into a werewolf. For those who aren’t familiar with the term, a supermoon is a full moon that occurs when the moon is at the closest point to Earth, they have a dramatic effect on things like tides, but this one goes further than that. It unlocks mankind’s latent werewolf gene, causing unimaginable chaos and death. And now it’s about to happen again.
When we first meet Wesley Marshal he’s busy setting up defences at the home of his sister-in-law Lucy and her young daughter, Emma. They need the help because Wesley’s brother was a firefighter, killed in the line of duty during the first transformation.

"He'll kill me if he finds me!" Run, Phoebe, run! IFC Films has unveiled an official trailer for an indie thriller film titled Inheritance, now set for release in theaters starting late January 2025. Strangely haven't heard much about this film before and it hasn't shown up at any film festivals either. From director Neil Burger, Inheritance follows Maya, who learns her father Sam was once a spy. Suddenly, she finds herself at the center of an international conspiracy and must go on the run, too. Starring Phoebe Dynevor, Rhys Ifans, Ciara Baxendale, and Majd Eid. This looks like an intricate & intimate thriller, with tons of intense GoPro-esque close-up shots of Dynevor as she goes on the round. Also looks like they shot this with a tiny crew using cheap digital cameras all around the world and filming on the fly (without permits or approvals in some of these countries). It might be entertaining?...

For over two decades, Law & Order: Svu has gripped audiences with its exploration of harrowing crimes and the tenacious detectives who work tirelessly to bring justice to survivors. The show's longevity is a testament to its ability to evolve while maintaining its core themes. Yet, in recent years, one of its major changes has grown more and more noticeable: the nature of its cold opens. What was once a masterful exercise in restraint has transformed into something far more explicit, often at the expense of both storytelling and audience engagement.
This change in approach may not immediately register for casual viewers, but for long-time fans, the difference is striking. The opening scenes of Svu have historically set the tone for each episode, offering a blend of intrigue, dark humor, and gritty realism that drew viewers into the story. However, recent seasons have leaned heavily into graphic portrayals of violence,...

Egyptian locations will soon take the spotlight in three wildly different titles all set for release next year.
While blockbusters “Wicked Part Two” and “Fountain of Youth,” from director Guy Ritchie, both make use of the country’s historical riches and otherworldly expanses, filmmaker Neil Burger will channel the breakneck pace of modern Cairo with his gritty espionage thriller “Inheritance” — set for release on Jan. 24.
Together, these heavyweight titles herald a standout year for a still nascent commission founded in 2019. A subsidiary of the Egyptian Media Production City (Empc), the Egypt Film Commission now serves as a one-stop-shop and unique point of access for international projects in need of shooting permits and approvals, coordinating and liaising with state ministries while suggesting local service facilitators for all production needs.
Since 2019, the commission has assisted 55 international productions, with some even benefiting from a 30% cashback incentive for titles using Empc premises and facilities.

One of the most frustrating parts about the convergence of critical and popular opinion caused by the social media age is that some stellar creators get left by the wayside. This trend is most visible when it comes to literature, and since Winter Is Coming is dedicated to bringing you coverage of the world’s best science-fiction and fantasy stories, we thought it was about time to fill in some of the blind spots that very well might be showing up on your reading list.
When putting together our picks for this list, we realized that it would be impossible to point out every single overlooked author in these genres. One could spend their entire career writing about such a thing and likely only scratch the surface. So we tried to put together a list full of the brightest authors representing the past, present, and future of sci-fi and fantasy.

Lionsgate has moved Mel Gibson 's highly anticipated suspense thriller Flight Risk back to 2025. The film, starring Mark Wahlberg , Michelle Dockery, and Topher Grace, was originally scheduled to be released on October 18, 2024, but the studio chose to delay the release further into next year, setting its theatrical debut for January 24, 2025.
