All good horror thrives on the unknown, but sometimes it really thrives on the unknown. While plenty of scary movies love to tie things up in a neat, terrifying bow, others seem dead set on making sure you leave the theater (or your couch) more confused than when you started. These are the films that don’t just end on a question mark -- they practically mock you for expecting anything else.
Of course, some of the best horror stories don’t hand you all the answers because the real horror lies in uncertainty. Ambiguity keeps the fear alive, lingering in your brain long after fans finish watching the film. However, some movies revel in unsettling mysteries more than most and not only refuse to explain themselves and actively create more questions than they do answers.

A24's reputation within the film industry is anything but ordinary. It was founded as a distribution company in 2012 by Daniel Katz, David Fenkel and John Hodges. The three aimed to reinvigorate the cinematic landscape with films that allowed filmmakers to take risks. Studio influence can be a significant inhibitor of the final product and can often interfere with more original ideas in favor of appealing to widespread audiences.
This emphasis on creative freedom has designated A24 as a company that experiments with unconventional storytelling and technicalities, resulting in truly moving experiences for all varieties of audiences. Many A24 films can be classified as touching, thought-provoking, and even disturbing, so it might be best to be in a clear-headed mindset before embarking on the wild ride these films offer.

Once upon a time, “indie director” meant someone scraping together pennies to shoot a movie in their backyard with a borrowed camera and a dream. These days? It’s a bit of a mixed bag. Some indie filmmakers stay true to their low-budget roots, crafting unique, artsy, and deeply personal stories.
Others take that indie street cred, sell out, and go on to direct the next billion-dollar superhero flick. Either way, the indie-to-mainstream pipeline is real, and Hollywood loves plucking fresh talent from the festival circuit and handing them a massive franchise to steer.

Robert Pattinson Once Revealed He Lied To Christopher Nolan About Going To The Batman Screen Test ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Robert Pattinson is one of the most versatile actors of his generation. He proved people wrong with his brilliant performance as Bruce Wayne. Pattinson played the DC superhero in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. However, he had to keep it under wraps and hide it from Christopher Nolan. He went for the auditions and screen test while filming Nolan’s sci-fi flick Tenet. Keep scrolling for the deets.
Pattinson gained global fame as Edward Cullen but later earned critical acclaim for his work in indie and auteur-driven films. He achieved success with Indie films like The Rover and The Lighthouse. In Reeves’ DC movie, he played a darker, more grounded version of Bruce Wayne/Batman, earning praise for his performance. Pattinson is now recognized as a risk-taking actor who blends mainstream and arthouse cinema.

Weird is wonderful. Weird is good. Weird films challenge expectations with disorienting elements like surreal imagery, non-linear plots, and dreamlike (or nightmarish) logic. So what defines 'weird?' Ambiguity, uncomfortable atmospheres, rejection of traditional narrative structures? The beauty of it lies in bypassing our rational mind and speaking directly to our subconscious. These films remain in our thoughts, revealing different meanings every time we watch them.
2019’s The Lighthouse, directed by Robert Eggers, owns its claustrophobic black-and-white cinematography, surreal mermaid visions, and descent into madness. Its obscure mythology and sexual imagery create an air of psychological horror and dread. Lead actors Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson deliver exceptional performances as isolated lighthouse keepers whose grip on reality deteriorates. With that in mind, if you like The Lighthouse, you'll love 1968'sHour of the Wolf.

The new Robert Pattinson science fiction movie has surpassed a major box office milestone despite setbacks during its second weekend. Pattinson is a well-known actor who got his start in prominent franchises, including playing Cedric Diggory in 2005's Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Edward Cullen in the Twilight franchise, which spanned five movies that were released between 2008 and 2012. However, as he grew older, he began to take on more idiosyncratic roles.
While he has since returned to franchise filmmaking in a major way by leading the cast of The Batman in the title role, he has become better known for working with auteur directors such as the Safdie Brothers, who he partnered with in their 2017 movie Good Time, and Robert Eggers, who he worked with in the 2019 horror feature The Lighthouse. Other titles that saw him work with notable directors include Claire Denis' High Life, Christopher Nolan's Tenet,...

A24 horror movies have garnered a reputation for being some of the best entries in the genre. The independent entertainment company is largely responsible for the “elevated horror” boom. They attract an array of auteur filmmakers with distinct visions and tend to give them a fairly loose leash when it comes to creative control. The end result can be a mixed bag, but more often than not viewers are treated to a memorable horror experience worthy of the crown worn by King Paimon.

Zendaya and Robert Pattinson are two of the best young actors in the business, and they recently teamed up for a new A24 movie. After rising to fame as Edward Cullen in the Twilight movies, Pattinson has completely reinvented himself with an array of independent dramas. This includes several collaborations with the indie studio A24, starring in the Safdie brothers' Good Time, Claire Denis' High Life, and Robert Eggers' The Lighthouse in consecutive years from 2017 to 2019, though he has also starred in other well-regarded movies including Tenet, The Batman, and the Boy and the Heron English dub.
Similarly, Zendaya started her career on the Disney Channel sitcoms Shake It Up and K.C. Undercover, but has also completely redefined herself as a dramatic actor. This started with her role as Rue, a struggling drug-addicted teenager, in the HBO drama Euphoria. She has so far won two Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actress for her performance,...

Robert Pattinson and Zendaya will co-star in A24's upcoming rom-com The Drama. Pattinson recently recalled being so committed to the story that he obsessed over a particular scene, until Zendaya calmly explained its meaning.
Speaking to French outlet Premiere (via IndieWire), Pattinson recalled obsessing over the scene's context, so much that he called Zendaya, who convinced him not to read too much into the script. "We had a scene together that was driving me crazy," he said. "I was desperately looking for its meaning, writing pages and pages of textual analysis. I ended up calling Zendaya the night before shooting the scene."
"I shared my doubts with her. I spoke for two hours, and after a while, very calmly, she made me understand that the line just said what it meant to say, that there was no hidden meaning. And there I was going crazy for three days," Pattinson elaborated.

If there’s one thing you can count on in this unpredictable world, it’s that Nicolas Cage will never let you pin him down. One moment he’s sucking blood as Dracula, the next, he’s out there catching waves like a philosophical Johnny Utah. And now, with The Surfer, Cage is back in all his sun-kissed glory, and the internet is having a field day with it.
Rotten Tomatoes is already nodding in approval, but as always, the Cage fandom is split right down the middle. Some are hyped while others are preparing their best memes for what they think will be his next great cinematic misadventure.

Whether he’s riding a wave of success or crashing into cult-movie territory, one thing is certain, Cage never does anything halfway. So, is this another instant classic, or will it be washed away by the tide?...

There are a few success stories to be celebrated in Mickey 17, the new film from Parasite director Bong Joon-ho. The first concerns Bong himself, who has managed to make an expensive, completely original sci-fi movie in an era where any film that costs over $100 must be part of some greater cinematic universe. It's beyond refreshing to watch a movie with this kind of story — one with clones, spaceships and alien slugs — have original characters, an original world, and an original style. You can compare Mickey 17 to other movies, but it's still something new. It wasn't setting itself up for a sequel, and I was never sure where the story was headed for the whole of its two hours and 17 minutes. It know I'm setting the bar for positivity low here, but movies like Mickey 17 are rare enough these days that they're worth checking out for the novelty alone.

We've never really thought about what a Robert Eggers and James Cameron collaboration would look like. That is, until the bizarre, Lovecraftian horror sci-fi mash-upCold Skin came across the screen. Released in 2017 and directed by Xavier Gens, and based on the novel by Albert Sánchez Piñol, this wonderfully layered movie stars the criminally underrated Ray Stevenson (Kill the Irishman), David Oakes, and Aura Garrido as they take us on a wild ride. Cold Skin is equal parts The Lighthouse, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Francis Lawrence's I Am Legend. Now imagine all those movies baked together on less than 10% of the budget that Eggers, Cameron, and Lawrence typically have to work with, and you've got this turbocharged horror thriller that's a blast to watch on a Saturday night. Only a cosmic guru like H.P. Lovecraft could have possibly conjured up this half-horror/half-sci-fi diamond in the rough. Let's...

Believe it or not, once upon a time, Robert Pattinson was not considered a top-notch actor. Sad but true! To be fair, there were a lot of mitigating factors surrounding this, chief among them the fact that he exploded onto the scene as the male lead in the "Twilight" saga, finding himself at the epicenter of that dubious pop-cultural phenomenon. Despite hordes of screaming young fans going wild for the English actor based on his beauty, the dismissal of Pattinson by snooty folks at the time helped teach us a valuable lesson later, one which we keep failing to learn: teen girls do tend to have good taste.
After all, almost immediately following his tenure in the "Twilight" films, Pattinson used his newfound clout to become a star to be reckoned with. He doubled down on a collaboration with the cerebral Canadian provocateur David Cronenberg, appearing in both "Cosmopolis" and "Maps to the Stars.

Robert Pattinson is currently on his promotional tour for upcoming film Mickey 17, a science fiction movie from Oscar-winning filmmaker Bong Joon-ho. During one of his recent chats with GQ, the actor revealed that he's actually become too "sensitive" to watch horror movies! Considering Pattinson has starred in a few of them, that's surprising.
Per Variety, The Batman star revealed that he had to watch a horror movie recently before meeting with a director and the result left him quite shaken, to the point he had to go to sleep that night with knives beside him.

The Batman actor Robert Pattinson has admitted to not being quite as brave and bold as the Caped Crusader he famously portrayed in Matt Reeves' 2022 superhero movie. He revealed in a GQ video interview that his movie-watching habits have changed significantly as he has grown older, noting that he used to love watching all kinds of horrors unfold on the screen, but he has now become "too sensitive" for the genre.

South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon Ho has fiddled around with dramatic thrillers like Memories of Murder and Mother as well as thoughtful science fiction such as Snowpiercer and The Host. After winning his handful of Oscars a few years back with his crossover drama Parasite, he’s now flipped the switch back to sci-fi with his newest film, the dystopian space opera Mickey 17.
Mickey 17 stars Robert Pattinson as Mickey Barnes, a loser who, after getting into trouble on Earth, volunteers to be an “expendable” on an outer space colonization mission. Expendables are part suicide soldiers and part lab rats, as they are basically used to do dangerous tasks and medical tests that might (and probably will) get them killed. The catch is, once they die, their body is just “reprinted” and their memories are implanted in the new shell.

The entire plot of Nosferatu revolves around Bill Skarsgard's Count Orlok wanting Lily-Rose Depp's Ellen more than anything in the world and stopping at nothing to get her; however, the reasons behind his lust are not entirely spelled out.
After a successful theatrical run (the movie grossed $178 million on a $50 million budget) that lasted longer than most Focus Features titles, Nosferatu began streaming on Peacock, allowing an entirely new audience to experience the fantasy horror.
The movie is directed by Robert Eggers and follows a vampire as he sacrifices everything to reach a woman who unknowingly calls out to him (read a full plot breakdown of Nosferatu here).

Directed by horror master Robert Eggers and starring Lily-Rose Depp, Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult and Willem Dafoe, Nosferatuwas a project a long time in the making. Eggers first set his his sights on re-making the 1920s horror classic in 2015, immediately following the success of his debut film, The Witch – only to be met with setback after setback until he finally shelved it until further notice. It's almost divine intervention that his passion project finally came to fruition in the mid-2020s, in the immediate aftermath of a plague, in the midst of a horror renaissance and a spirited revival of analog technology and practical effects.

People love horror movies. As much as they fail to accept it when a discussion about cinema’s horrific impact comes up, one can’t think about movies without the horror genre involved in some way. Stream the haunting new adaptation, plus a never-before-seen extended version, starting Friday, Feb. 21.
I absolutely loved “Nosferatu”. It’s everything a horror remake should be - respectful of the original while making its own mark. Bill Skarsgård’s voice as Nosferatu is unreal - guttural, chilling, and completely inhuman. The whole movie is just the right kind of creepy, never leaning on cheap jump scares but instead building tension through eerie visuals, unsettling silence, and incredible performances. Few remakes actually live up to their predecessors, but this one does. And very soon, it’ll be added to my list of best Dracula movies to stream. You can stream “Nosferatu” exclusively on Peacock starting Friday, Feb. 21.

Robert Pattinson’s demographic has seemingly shifted after his work in movies like Good Time and The Lighthouse. He has also been able to don the cape and cowl and become a new Batman for audiences with a separate continuity in Matt Reeves’ incarnation of The Batman. No woman has even won an Oscar for best cinematography, and that’s not likely to change in 2025. Why? Because no women made the final five. But this year, the American Society of Cinematographers could be righting Oscar’s wrong.
ASC has only handed out the top prize once to a woman — Mandy Walker, who won in the feature competition in 2023 for “Elvis.” Now, for the first time since 2014, the feature competition field has expanded its nominees to seven, with Alice Brooks landing a nomination for her work on “Wicked.”
Brooks had one goal for the big screen adaptation of the hit musical, that “it would be the most beautiful love story between these two women,” she says, referring to Glinda (Ariana Grande) and Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), who star as the famous witches of Oz.
Brooks is Jon M. Chu’s go-to Dp since their filmmaking days at the University of Southern California.

What's it feel like to die?
Through curious eyes as wide as saucers and nervous smiles hiding from beneath pinched lips, just about everyone on the colonizer ship heading to Niflheim has asked this question to Mickey Barnes — or one of the many human printings of him — much to his chagrin. No matter how many times he dies, it never gets any easier, but Mickey finds solace in knowing that no matter what, he'll still wake up in the morning regardless of how brutal his demise was the day before.
After some risky financial dealings with loan sharks inspire Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson) and his business partner Berto (Steven Yeun) to escape Earth to avoid being killed by the shark's heavies, Berto quickly finds a gig as a pilot, while Mickey volunteers to be an "expendable," or a person who will tackle suicide missions in the name of science for...

Robert Eggers’ ‘Nosferatu’: A Visual Triumph in the Darkly Twisted Remake of the Influential Classic
Just as he has done with all his previous work, Robert Eggers has transcended the modern cinematic expectations with ‘Nosferatu’ (2024), a remake of the 1922 silent classic. Less than two months after its theatrical debut, Robert Eggers' Nosferatu has set its streaming release date, and it's sooner than you might think. The best part? An extended cut will also be available to stream, featuring even more footage of Bill Skarsgård's Count Orlok. Debuting on Christmas Day, 2024, the remake of the 1922 German classic managed to pull in $176.5 million at the box office, and was heralded by many as one of the best horror movies of the year.
Per The Wrap, Nosferatu will make its streaming debut on Peacock starting Feb. 21, which is less than a week away at the time of this writing. The extended cut will also be made available at that time, and features an additional four minutes of footage not seen in the 132-minute theatrical version. Robert Eggers had made a name for himself as a very creative and original director before tackling Nosferatu, a remake of the 1922 German silent film by F.W. Murnau. However, even with the success he's had previously, Nosferatu reached new heights.
The gothic horror had been a longtime passion project for the director, who intended to direct Nosferatufollowing his 2015 directorial debut, The Witch. He decided to focus on other projects before that, helming 2019's The Lighthouse and 2022's The Northman instead. Nosferatu hit theaters on Dec. 25, 2024, and will head to streaming on Peacock on Feb. 21, Variety reports.

It’s ironic that a quarter of the way into the 21st century, when studios have seemingly accepted home streaming as their primary means of movie distribution, Dp Lol Crawley has earned an Oscar nomination for “The Brutalist,” shot on VistaVision, a widescreen film process developed by Paramount Pictures in 1954 to help lure viewers away from their living room TVs and into the theaters.
Used for such films as John Ford’s “The Searchers,” Cecil B. DeMille’s “The Ten Commandments” and Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo,” VistaVision was designed as a competitor to 20th Century Fox’s Cinema- Scope, which employed an anamorphic lens to compress a widescreen image on to standard 35mm film stock.
“As opposed to pulling the film down vertically in a motion picture camera, it’s actually pulling it horizontally across eight perforations at a time,” explains Crawley. “So you end up with a bigger format,...

Now, Scorsese has taken a moment to hype up another horror film, and this time it was The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman writer/director Robert Eggers‘ remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu.
An unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the original Nosferatu has the following synopsis: In this highly influential silent horror film, the mysterious Count Orlok (Max Schreck) summons Thomas Hutter (Gustav von Wangenheim) to his remote Transylvanian castle in the mountains. The eerie Orlok seeks to buy a house near Hutter and his wife, Ellen (Greta Schroeder). After Orlok reveals his vampire nature, Hutter struggles to escape the castle, knowing that Ellen is in grave danger. The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman, and Nosferatu writer/director Robert Eggers has dealt with some dark subject matter over the course of his career – but the darkest story is yet to come. No, not in his recently announced Labyrinth sequel, but in another recently announced project: the creature feature Werwulf, which he’s making for Focus Features, aiming for a Christmas Day 2026 theatrical release.

Robert Eggers ended 2024 with a bang with his remake of the classic silent horror film Nosferatu. The movie, which Eggers wrote and directed, was a long-time passion project for the creative. The development of the film went all the way back to 2015, shortly after the release of the director's debut film, The Witch, at the Sundance Film Festival that year. Now, nearly a decade later, Eggers has finally completed the project, with Nosferatu receiving critical acclaim and even an Academy Award nomination. Now, the director has already begun the early stages of development for his next project, tentatively titled Werewulf.
While taking questions at a panel, Eggers briefly touched upon his next film, which was given a December 2026 release date in keeping with the holiday horror tradition that started with Nosferatu. All the director had to say about the movie was, "It's a medieval werewolf movie. It's also the darkest...

Martin Scorsese is in awe of Robert Eggers.
During a recent Q&a with TCM’s Dave Karger (via World of Reel), Scorsese praised Eggers’ auteurism on his recent film “Nosferatu.”
“It’s amazing,” Scorsese said of the film. “Anything this guy does is amazing. That’s one film you don’t do much after seeing. You’re still in the world. You’re in Transylvania and it’s really … Man, he’s something.”
While Scorsese isn’t quite known for horror, Eggers has become a modern master of the genre. Eggers, who previously helmed “The Witch,” “The Northman,” and “The Lighthouse,” announced his fifth film “Werwulf” in January 2025.

Even though film is primarily a visual medium and the cinematographer has such an influential role in the final product, the Best Cinematography Oscar rarely matches the Best Picture winner. Last year’s Oppenheimer was an outlier, landing both awards, and the 2025 Academy Awards could yield similar results. But before Oppenheimer, the Best Picture winner was awarded Best Cinematography only three times since 2000.
This year, the five Best Cinematography nominees include three Best Picture nominees: frontrunner The Brutalist, potential spoiler Dune: Part Two (which won in this category for the first film in 2022), and the incredibly fraught Emilia Pérez. The other nominees are Maria (giving legendary cinematographer Ed Lachman his fourth nomination and second in as many years) and Nosferatu (putting Robert Eggers‘s longtime friend and cinematographer Jarin Blaschke back in the category following his surprise nomination for The Lighthouse).
Other data points to consider. Four of the five...

Robert Eggers, the filmmaker behind The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman, has revealed that his upcoming project, Werwulf, is the darkest story he has ever written—“by far.
Eggers is known for his unsettling and atmospheric films, often exploring folklore, history, and psychological horror. With Werwulf, it seems he is taking things to an even darker place.
Eggers is making this new werewolf flick with Focus Features. He co-wrote the script with Sjón, his writing partner from ‘The Northman.’ Eggers will direct the film, which is set to release on Christmas Day 2026 in North America.

If you've been to an uncle's third wedding, you've probably heard "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)." And if you haven't, your parents likely listened to it the night they conceived you. Well, as studios lick the pudding lid for any remaining IP that will light up the nostalgia centers of the last generation with disposable income, it seems Rupert Holmes' Yacht Rock wannabe is set to be adapted into a movie. A rom-com, of course.
According to Deadline, the film is currently in development at Alloy Entertainment, which has had a three-peat of successes with Work It, starring Sabrina Carpenter;Purple Hearts with Sofia Carson and Nicholas Galitzine; and Adam Sandler's You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.

Every awards season, movie fans and aspiring pundits across the country become obsessed with the ever-coveted Academy Awards. The longstanding awards show has long been considered the holy grail of the film industry and can often feel like an all-encompassing part of the discourse, particularly around the four acting categories. In the lead-up to Oscar Sunday, many of us debate who will win, and once the ceremony comes and goes, there are still debates over who should have won.
Amidst this hubbub, it's important to remember that the Oscars are but a modicum of what represents the best performances in film. In fact, several of the best actors working today have never been given the honor of an Oscar despite years of treasured performances. The disparity between what Oscar voters love and what history remembers has always been a widening gap, but we can guarantee these 15 omissions from the winner's circle are particularly egregious.

Nicholas Hoult has been on a bit of a run of late. Having lost the role of Batman to fellow Brit Robert Pattinson in "The Batman," the actor will soon play Lex Luthor in James Gunn's upcoming "Superman" after having similarly lost the lead role to David Corenswet. Still, not getting to play Superman almost makes Hoult the perfect Lex Luthor, and it will certainly be interesting to see what the actor does as the Man of Steel's most famous foe. In the lead up to that high-profile role, however, Hoult has been raising his profile and demonstrating his range with a slew of 2024 films that range from animated comedies to searing crime dramas.
After appearing alongside Nicholas Cage in the anticlimactic "Renfield" in 2023, Hoult seemingly went into 2024 determined to keep his career afloat. He voiced Jon Arbuckle in "Garfield," then starred in Clint Eastwood's legal thriller "Juror #2,...

When he’s not spooking and seducing with films like “The Lighthouse” and his most recent work, a reinvention of F.W. Continuing his appreciation for film aesthetics, Eggers went on to grab a set of work from Pier Paolo Pasolini, taking care to acknowledge the efforts of his designers in crafting the environments he shoots.
