They say nothing can come between a girl and her doll, and Brie Larson is living proof of that statement. The Academy Award-winning actress grew so tired of people mispronouncing her original French surname that she eventually adopted a new easier one.
But fans would be shocked to learn the inspiration behind her stage last name, her favorite American Girl doll. Several actors in Hollywood have opted for a memorable and easier-to-pronounce stage name, but none could have a cuter connection than the Elektra actress’s name.

As the film Descendants: The Rise of Red begins, a royal decree is issued, stipulating that Auradon Prep, the elite boarding school for Walt Disney’s classic characters, would welcome a new class of Vk’s — villains’ kids, or the offspring of Disney’s most nefarious antiheroes. Admission letters were sent off with the flourish of a wand and the Descendants franchise began a new journey.
The coming-of-age Descendants films have been tentpoles of the Disney Channel since 2015, when the first Descendants won over children and tweens. The two sequels, Descendants 2: It’s Going Down (2017) and Descendants 3 (2019), did equally well, each becoming the most watched TV movie among ages 6-14 when it premiered. The fourth cinematic entry into Disney’s Descendants franchise, The Rise of Red, has been released, with a new set of Disney Princess lore legacy faces and time travel shenanigans to bring in an additional dose of excitement. The recurrent theme of the musical franchise regarding redemption and second chances rings true in this new spin-off entry as well, but the usage of the redundant and overused ‘one bad day’ trope feels out of place in the context of narrative. However, Descendants 4 excels in music, choreography, and chemistry among key characters, all the while laying out a number of plot points that can be developed in the future as the makers aim to expand the franchise with a new trilogy.

Disney+ has released a new poster for Descendants: The Rise of Red, the upcoming sequel that will feature Kylie Cantrall as the titular character. From Disney darling to pop star, Dove Cameron's career has undergone quite the evolution since she began acting in her early teens. The versatile actor's earliest fans grew up alongside her as she played identical twins "Liv and Maddie" for four seasons on the hit Disney Channel show. But Cameron's professional acting career began even earlier, when she memorably guest-starred in two episodes of "Shameless" as Holly Herkimer, a young woman who was interested in Lip Gallagher (Jeremy Allen White).
Cameron's early work in "Shameless" and "Liv and Maddie" showed off the actor's range. Right from the start of her career, it was clear she could pull off comedic and dramatic roles, just as she could pivot between family-friendly fare and more daring projects. In recent years, she's continued to challenge herself as an actor with roles in B.J. Novak's directorial debut, "Vengeance" and Hulu's comedic...

A day after Nancy Kanter’s last day at Disney, Netflix announced an overall deal with the former EVP, Content and Creative Strategy for Disney Channels Worldwide, who launched and built Disney’s preschool TV channel Disney Junior.
Under the pact, Kanter will develop and produce animated and live-action projects — both feature films and series — targeted at kids and families through her company Available Light Productions.
For Netflix, brining on board Kanter, one of the most respected executives in the kids and family space, is part of a big push in family entertainment as the streamer is taking on the leading SVOD player in the space, Disney+.
“We’re very fired up about catching them in family animation — maybe eventually passing them, we’ll see, a long way to go just to catch them — and maintaining our lead in general entertainment that’s so stimulating,” Netflix’s founder and co-ceo...

Just over 63 years ago, Theodor Geisel — better known by his pen name, Dr. Seuss — wrote and illustrated a holiday-themed children’s book meant to teach kiddos that Christmas isn’t about spending outrageous sums of money to build a tree-toppling pile of presents; it’s about family, togetherness, and celebrating rebirth at the end of a long year.
So, naturally, “The Grinch” has been adapted a billion times over by every money-hungry corporation out there. It only took nine years for a TV version to hit screens, and that’s before the terrifying Jim Carrey/Ron Howard movie started dominating cable channels every December, or Illumination’s 2018 animated movie sat perched and waiting in Netflix queues for over a year, only to disappear December 4.
But fear not Seuss fans. “The Grinch Musical!” is here to offer two hours of fresh holiday entertainment thanks to NBC’s 2020 adaptation of the 2007 stage production.

NBC marked Thanksgiving by rolling out the first teaser for its upcoming “Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch Musical.” Unfortunately, the very brief look at star Matt Morrison’s very campy version of the title character pretty much resulted in social media fingers nervously drumming and people vowing to stop Christmas from coming.
What we’re saying is, the teaser made a lot of people’s hearts shrink two sizes smaller.
Announced two weeks ago, NBC’s two-hour version of “Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch Musical!” will star Morrison (“Glee”) as The Grinch with Denis O’Hare as the adult version of his dog, Max, Booboo Stewart (“Descendants 3”) as young Max, and newcomer Amelia Minto (“The Lost Girls”) as Cindy-Lou Who. Unlike a lot of previous TV musicals, this one won’t be live (we assume because of Covid), and instead will be filmed at the Troubadour Theatre in London at some point before its Dec.

Matthew Morrison is set to star in a taped two-hour production of “Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch Musical!” at NBC, which will be filmed at the Troubadour Theatre in London and air next month.
The “Glee” alum will play the curmudgeonly Grinch himself for the televised musical adaptation of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” which will air Dec. 9 at 8 p.m.
Per NBC, “Dr. Seuss’ famous book tells the story of a reclusive Grinch who plotted from his cave atop snowy Mt. Crumpit to steal Christmas from the Whos in Who-ville. Then on Christmas Eve, disguised as Santa Claus and enlisting his loyal dog Max as a reindeer, the Grinch traveled to Who-ville to scoop up the Whos’ gifts and decorations. Much to his surprise on Christmas morning, the Whos were unfazed and celebrated the holiday with a heartwarming display of joy and love.”

NBC is inviting the Grinch to share its holiday season: The network will air a two-hour production of Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch Musical! on December 9. Staged at the Troubadour Theatre in London, the musical production will star Glee‘s Matthew Morrison as the small-hearted Grinch and Denis O’Hare as his hapless mutt Max played on Broadway during the holiday seasons of 2006 and 2007.
In the NBC version, the Cindy-Lou Who character will be played by young newcomer Amelia Minto. Producers have also assembled an ensemble of musical theater actors from London’s West End to complete the cast.
“Dr. Seuss is an indelible part of all of our lives and we’re thrilled to bring a stage production of The Grinch Musical! to our audience,” said Doug Vaughan, Executive Vice President, Special Programs, NBC Entertainment. “This is a perfect addition to our annual holiday program traditions and a telecast the entire family will enjoy.”
The staging is by director Max Webster, and Julia Knowles directs for television. Additional script material is by Simon Nye, with sets by designer Peter Bingemann.
Previous musicals staged in recent years by NBC The Sound of Music, Peter Pan, The Wiz, Hairspray and Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.
Though Morrison became a household name on Glee, he has an extensive stage background, including roles in Broadway’s Footloose, Hairspray, and The Light in the Piazza. More recently, Morrison starred as J.M. Barrie in the Broadway musical Finding Neverland. Additional TV credits include The Good Wife, Grey’s Anatomy and American Horror Story: 1984. Morrison is represented by Podwall Entertainment, ICM Partners and Gang, Tyre, Ramer, Brown & Passman
Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch Musical is presented in association with Dr. Seuss Enterprises and Running Subway, produced by Penny Lane Entertainment Television and Simon Friend Entertainment. Lee Connolly, Simon Friend, Joshua Rosenblum and James Sanna serve as executive producers. Morrison also serves as a producer on the telecast.

Now that first-round Emmy voting is completed, who will be nominated for the season’s best song? RuPaul? Hailee Steinfeld? Darren Criss? Kristin Chenoweth?
That’s right, all four actors are potential nominees in Emmy’s song competition, officially known as Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics … as are such musical personalities as the Weeknd, Sara Bareilles, Brad Paisley and Nick Jonas — along with about 200 other songwriters.
If you’re an Emmy voter in the music branch, how do you decide what song to vote for? Do you pick something you already know and like, or do you investigate some, or all, of the many tunes entered?
There are seven music categories, which encompass more than 300 separate programs, a daunting task for even the most diligent voter. The made-for-tv movie was a programming staple for the broadcast networks in the 1970s and 1980s. While it fell out of favor in the 1990s and was even dropped as an Emmy Awards category for three years beginning in 2011, it has been on an upswing as of late. This year, 28 telefilms are in contention for the five nominations that will be revealed on July 28; last year only 21 TV movies were submitted.
All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until July 13 to cast their 2020 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for their favorite TV movies. In the past, voters were limited in the number of telefilms that they could put forth. In 2017 that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted. And, as opposed to the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally.

Disney’s “Descendants” is the franchise phenomenon that just won’t stop — look no further than the climbing YouTube numbers for its songs and performers.
Its latest and third installment centers around the teenage children of famous villains who return to the Isle of the Lost looking to recruit new kids to join them at their school, Auradon Prep. But things go haywire when Hades, the god of the underworld, escapes and the citizens panic — all told through song and dance.
When “Descendants 3” screened last summer, the movie received a delightfully wicked reception, with over 8.4 million viewers tuning in on the Disney Channel. The soundtrack went on to great success as well, and, so far, the songs from the third installment logged over 111 million views in just the first five days.

Disney is shutting down three TV channels aimed at content for kids in the U.K. Disney Channel, Disney Xd and Disney Junior are all set to cease operations in the fall. Disney+ finally launched in the UK during the last week of March with a fairly robust library that included a massive collection of The Simpsons from its recently-acquired Fox catalogue, but there was a little rough with the smooth, as the streaming service decided to include just two episodes of its flagship Star Wars live-action series, The Mandalorian, and there were some clear discrepancies between the bonuses of being a Us and UK subscriber – there hasn’t yet been a peep out of Disney+ on the whereabouts of Frozen 2, nor has there yet been any news of a premiere date for Pixar’s Onward or Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
Also in the wind is the possibility that Marvel’s Black Widow, which has been removed from the theatrical release schedule due to the Covid-19 pandemic, might end up streaming on Disney+. As it stands, this...

This season is full of relationships worth marking "complicated" on Facebook.
Charmed (2018) Season 2 Episode 6 is full of flirtatious moments and heart wrenching storylines.
There's no denying that there's still chemistry between Maggie and Jordan.
It's unfortunate that poor Jordan's girlfriend had to witness sparks fly between the two of them on the karaoke stage.
Maggie and Jordan's flirty rendition of Ain't No Mountain High Enough was one of the best scenes of the episode.
Actress Sarah Jeffery who plays the role of Maggie is also the star of Disney's hit musical fantasy Descendants 3, so she's no stranger to the microphone.
Maggie: I don't know how it works or why it works, but it does.
Harry: Then you need to get him alone and touch him everywhere.

She has a surprisingly sweet voice and a natural stage presence.

Exclusive: Sam Trammell, Katharine McPhee Foster and young actor Christian Convery are set to star alongside Queen Latifah, Dennis Quaid and Madalen Mills in The Tiger Rising. Ray Giarratana is directing the film from a screenplay he adapted based on the 2001 New York Times bestselling children’s book by Kate Dicamillo.
The story centers on Rob Horton (Convery), a 12-year-old who finds a caged tiger in the center of the woods near his home. Shortly after, Rob meets Sistine Bailey (Mills), a girl who shows her feelings as readily as Rob hides his. As they learn to trust each other and become friends, Rob and Sistine prove that some things – like memories, heartaches and tigers – can’t be locked up forever. Trammell and McPhee Foster will play Rob’s parents, Robert Horton Sr. and Caroline Horton.
Deborah and Ray Giarratana of Gg Filmz are producing with Ryan Smith, partner and president of Streamline Global.

Chasing the ever-lucrative, ever-changing market for children’s entertainment has always been a struggle, and nowhere are the challenges more acute than in music.
Variety’s Music for Screens summit will bring together execs from Disney Channel, DreamWorks Animation and eOne, along with songwriters Antonina Armato and Kay Hanley, for a panel moderated by Bmi’s VP of Creative Relations Doreen Ringer Ross to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing music in family entertainment.
One of the year’s most unexpected success stories in the kids’ music space came via the popular “Peppa Pig” (pictured). The first album from the long-running British preschool show got a surprise boost in publicity when rapper Iggy Azalea turned her competing release date into a pretend chart feud with Peppa on Twitter, which gave birth to all manner of memes.
“That definitely wasn’t in the marketing plan when we were getting ready to put that album out,...

‘High Strung Free Dance’ Film Review: Toe-Tapping Dance Saga Shimmies Between Sublime and Ridiculous
There are two kinds of people in this crazy, mixed-up world of ours: The people who love the dance movie “High Strung” and the people who are only just now hearing about it for the first time.
It’s a bizarre, bright and unabashedly sincere modern cult classic about a dance student who teams up with a rebellious violinist to rock New York City at the intersection where popping, locking and string instrumentation collide. Find another movie where an impromptu fiddle feud breaks out in the midst of a snooty party, where all the working-class servers suddenly break out into a perfectly choreographed routine that culminates in an awkward flying kick into a platter full of champagne flutes. You’ll be looking for a long, long time, mark my words.
So needless to say, the bar was set very high for the new sequel, “High Strung Free Dance.” The follow-up...

Dove Cameron knows people have never been sure what to make of her. The 23-year-old got her start on Disney, starring in the sitcom Liv and Maddie before helming the musical film franchise Descendants, in which she played Maleficent’s daughter. While she thrived on the platform, her life and celebrity felt separate from the entertainment engine for which she was working.
“I always felt like I was an actress-for-hire rather than a brand ambassador or a ‘Disney kid,’” she says bluntly. When Descendants 3 aired earlier this summer, her final appearance in the franchise,...
