I’m not sure what’s more surprising, that I’m reviewing a movie called Death Rider in the House of Vampires or that, after Verotika, somebody put up money for Glenn Danzig to make another movie. But here we are.
As the film opens Death Rider is riding through a desert filled with warning signs and crucified bodies. He leads another horse, with a bound, topless woman on it. She is his entrance fee to Sanctuary, one female virgin. She looks like she probably couldn’t remember when she actually was a virgin but that’s besides the point.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller are filmmakers that really have earned our trust over the past several years. Thanks to films like “The Lego Movie,” the ‘21 Jump Street’ franchise, and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” these filmmakers have the benefit of the doubt no matter what the project is. However, with the upcoming series, “The Afterparty,” it appears that there’s very little to doubt, as the comedy is stacked with some incredible actors.

There are a few subgenres to sports movies and TV series. You have the classic underdog story like “Rocky.” There’s also the “coach learns about life from his players” story as we saw recently with the film “The Way Back.” And then, on a more lighthearted path, there’s the “misfit team led by a grouchy coach” story that was classically shown in “The Bad News Bears” and now, the upcoming Netflix series, “Hoops.”

Updated: Apple TV+ has given an eight-episode straight-to-series order to The Afterparty, a single-camera comedy series executive produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, from Sony Pictures TV and its label TriStar Television.
The project, which I hear already has hired a line producer and is zeroing in on casting the lead, is created by Miller who will serve as showrunner. Lord Miller’s VP of Television Aubrey Lee will serve as producer.
