Looking for something to stream that won’t break the bank? From award-winning films like Craig Gillespie’s “I, Tonya” and Sarah Polley’s “Women Talking” to thrillers like David Fincher’s “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo,” Mubi is bringing a new slate of films to the ad-supported platform.

If binging is more your speed, new TV shows added to Tubi in March will include the 1971 classic “All In The Family,” the sitcom “Community” and the “Men in Black” series. And for those looking for frights, the first four “Insidious” films will be available to stream.

Along with the updated library, Tubi is also premiering three original thrillers.

Exclusive: Max Beesley, Douglas Hodge, JJ Feild and Betty Gabriel have joined John Krasinski in the cast of the new Jack Ryan movie at Amazon MGM Studios. Also on board are Sienna Miller and Wendell Pierce and Michael Kelly, returning cast from Amazon’s Prime Video series Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan. Gabriel also appeared in the third and fourth seasons of the series.

Capitalizing on the success of the series, the film marks the next stage in the evolution of the franchise and is produced in association with Paramount Pictures and Skydance. Krasinski and Allyson Seeger are producing via Sunday Night. Andrew Form is also producing.

Apple TV+’s limited series Lucky has added a second big name to its cast.

Annette Bening will star opposite Anya Taylor-Joy in the drama, which is based on Marissa Stapley’s best-selling novel of the same name. The series centers on Lucky (Taylor-Joy), a young woman who has left an earlier life of crime behind her but is drawn back in as she attempts to escape her past.

Bening will play Priscilla, who in the novel is a thief and a thorn in Lucky’s side.

Apple TV+ ordered the series in December from creator Jonathan Tropper (See, the forthcoming Your Friends & Neighbors) and Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine (the novel was a Reese’s Book Club selection). Apple Studios is producing.

Annette Bening is set to star alongside Anya Taylor-Joy in the upcoming Apple TV+ limited series “Lucky,” Variety has learned.

It was announced that Taylor-Joy would star in the series back in December. It is based on the novel of the same name by Marissa Stapley. The book was a New York Times bestseller and a selection for Reese Witherspoon’s Reese’s Book Club.

Per the official description, Taylor-Joy stars as “a young woman who left behind the life of crime she was raised in years ago, but must now embrace her darker, criminal side one final time in a desperate attempt to escape her past.”

The Academy Award-nominated “Elvis” star has signed on to play Wall Street yuppie/serial killer Patrick Bateman in “American Psycho,” director Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’ 1991 novel of the same name for Lionsgate.

“American Psycho” is a satirical horror story set in 1980s New York City about an investment banker who leads a double life as a serial killer, though both sides of his life are depraved. Butler has played a psycho before, as Feyd-Rautha in “Dune: Part Two,” and is developing a reputation as an actor who commits intensely for roles.

Luca Guadagnino and Lionsgate announced that the “Call Me by Your Name” and “Queer” director is in final discussions to film a new version of Bret Eason Ellis’ dark horror novel “American Psycho,” nearly 25 years after the same company released Mary Harron’s satirical adaptation. In a key role that elevated his career, the 2000 film starred Christian Bale as yuppie investment banker-turned-serial killer Patrick Bateman.

It’s the kind of announcement destined to raise eyebrows. Guadagnino is in a career sweet spot after “Challengers” and “Queer” this year (and “After the Hunt” in post); he already has many projects in the works, including “Separate Rooms” with Josh O’Connor and a Thomas Mann adaptation in early development. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is keeping it all in the family as it has just named Jennifer Fox as producer of the 15th Governors Awards ceremony that will take place November 17, 2024 in the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Ovation Hollywood.

Fox was elected to the AMPAS Board of Governors for the the first time in June but is no stranger to the Governors Awards. She is embarking on her sixth consecutive time producing the event. The Governors Awards, unlike the Oscars, are not televised but instead briefly highlighted in a clips package on the ABC broadcast of the Academy Awards.

The 2025 Oscars are set for March 2, 2025.

At the 15th Governors Awards, Honorary Oscars will be presented to Quincy Jones and Juliet Taylor, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award will go to Richard Curtis, and the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award will be bestowed upon producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli.

Jennifer Fox, the Oscar-nominated film producer, will produce the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ 2024 Governors Awards, Academy president Janet Yang announced Wednesday. It will be Fox’s sixth time overseeing the event, following the 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th editions.

At the 15th Governors Awards, which will take place in the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Ovation Hollywood on Sunday, Nov. 17, Quincy Jones and Juliet Taylor will receive honorary Oscars; Richard Curtis will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award; and Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. The streamer won a bidding war by giving a straight-to-series order to Thumblite, set in the epicenter of the tech industry. The series comes from The Morning Show and Pachinko producer Media Res and creator Scott Z. Burns (The Report, Apple TV+’s Extrapolations); NYU marketing professor and podcaster Scott Galloway is an executive producer. Rosamund Pike (The Wheel of Time, Saltburn) will star and executive produce.

Netflix describes Thumblite as “a corporate thriller set in Silicon Valley, that examines the schemes, rivalries, visions and obsessions of the power brokers and their underlings as they vie for control of the most powerful industry the world has ever known.” Details on Pike’s role in the show are being kept quiet for now.

Samuel L. Jackson's thriller Unthinkable has recently received renewed interest since hitting Netflix. Directed by Gregor Johnson and penned by British screenwriter and stuntman Peter Woodward, the movie stars Jackson with Michael Sheen, Brandon Routh, and Carrie-Anne Moss in supporting roles. The plot revolves around the torture of an American Muslim and bomb expert who has planted explosives in three US cities. The Make-up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards will honor Nyad star Annette Bening with the Distinguished Artisan Award at its 11th annual Muahs Awards.

The event is set for Sunday, February 18, at The Beverly Hilton.

Annette Bening is an actor’s actor. Like many of the greats before her, she began her career in the theatre. Through the 80s, she quietly compiled a library of rich, complex characters before making her Tony-nominated broadway debut in 1987’s “Coastal Disturbances.”

Bening then made her well deserved transition over to Hollywood with John Hughes’ “The Great Outdoors.” The film didn’t perform as well as hoped, nor did Milos Forman’s “Valmont” which was released the following year, but they both paved the way for Bening’s eventual Oscar-nominated breakout as Myra Langtry in Stephen Frears’ “The Grifters.”

Employees were notified on Tuesday, and we hear that almost all divisions are affected, with all of those working on the TV side being cut.

A company spokesperson emphasizes that despite changes being made when it comes to the small-screen arena, “Topic Studios continues to produce television programs. This week’s staff changes have not impacted the multiple scripted and non-scripted television projects in production and development. While our scripted television strategy will be evolving, we plan to increase investment in this area.”

Exclusive: Amazon MGM’s Head of Specialty Theatrical Distribution, Mark Boxer, was among the notables cuts yesterday at the streaming theatrical studio.

Among some of Boxer’s highlights at Amazon, he oversaw the specialty theatrical releases of such Oscar nominated titles as Being the Ricardos, Poland’s 2018 International film entry Cold War, and 2x Oscar winner Sound of Metal.

With Amazon’s acquisition of MGM, Boxer was a key suit in getting Ben Affleck’s Air into theaters. He was also recently involved in the successful release strategies for awards season titles Saltburn, The Boys in the Boat and American Fiction.

During the pandemic, Boxer also handled the theatrical distribution of such big Prime Video acquisition titles, Coming 2 America, Cinderella, Hotel Transylvania 4, and The Tomorrow War to those cinemas and drive-ins that were lucky to be open.

Jennifer Fox, the Oscar-nominated film producer (Michael Clayton), will produce the next Governors Awards ceremony for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Academy president Janet Yang announced Wednesday. It will be Fox’s fifth time overseeing the event, following the 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th editions.

The 14th Governors Awards will take place on Jan. 9 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Ovation Hollywood. Honorary Awards will be presented to Angela Bassett, Mel Brooks and film editor Carol Littleton, and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award to the Sundance Institute’s Michelle Satter.

“Producing the Academy’s Governors Awards for the fifth time and helping kick off another Oscar season is an absolute honor,” Fox said in a statement. “I’m looking forward to a memorable night paying tribute to this year’s exceptional honorees.”
