Jenna Ortega is now one of the biggest stars of her generation. A former Disney Channel kid, the 22-year-old has been in the industry for over a decade. Smaller film roles such as X and The Fallout brought her more attention, but it was her titular role in the Netflix series Wednesday that catapulted her popularity. That performance earned her critical acclaim, including an Emmy nomination and a Golden Globe nomination. She would continue her work with prolific director Tim Burton in last year's sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
Since taking on Wednesday, it seems like new parts for Ortega are constantly being announced. She played opposite Martin Freeman in the controversial film Miller's Girl, and is about to be in A24's Death of a Unicorn. In addition to Wednesday season 2, Ortega has multiple upcoming parts this year, including Hurry Up Tomorrow and Klara and the Sun. Now, it has just...

Jenna Ortega is a rising star in Hollywood, but despite her ongoing success, she has largely appeared to play the same role again and again. Ortega is just 22 years old, and has already starred in major motion pictures, the biggest hit show on Netflix, and a handful of horror movies, but despite the growing list of credits, Ortega appears to be repeatedly cast in a role that is largely the same in each new project.
There have been slight breaks from the norm, with some horror roles affording her the opportunity to play a more independent character, or someone who is not quite as resilient and tough, but, more often than not, her biggest roles and the ones that get the most attention have repeated some of the same elements that seem to rapidly be putting her into one specific typecast. Death of a Unicorn centers on a father (Rudd) and daughter (Ortega) who are headed to a weekend getaway with his billionaire boss (Grant) when the pair strike a unicorn with their car. Complications ensue when the boss realizes that the unicorn gives miraculous benefits.

Jenna Ortega rose to the ranks of A-listers, and she is now working with the biggest stars in the industry. In fact, her collaboration with Oscar awardee Tommy Lee Jones is proof that she has made it big in Hollywood. However, their movie together did not prove to be successful.

What’s more upsetting is that they worked on this project called Finestkind with famed producer Taylor Sheridan. Chances are, you haven’t watched or heard about this movie until today. Or, if you’re familiar with this, it means you know it flopped critically.
Jenna Ortega and Tommy Lee Jones’ Finestkind Failed to Impress the Critics
Finestkind premiered on Paramount+ last year, and many critics aired their frustration over the film. The majority described it as a mess, but more importantly, they blamed director and writer Brian Helgeland for wasting such a stellar cast.

Jenna Ortega has steadily established herself as one of Hollywood's most talented and captivating performers, with the 22-year-old actress demonstrating her universal appeal in cinematic knockouts like Scream, X, Miller's Girl, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and as the macabre-loving Wednesday Addams in the Netflix juggernaut Wednesday. Ortega has been nominated for countless accolades like a Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy, and has also been included in Forbes' prestigious 30 Under 30 list in 2024.
Though she has now become synonymous with being one of the entertainment industry's most beloved scream queens, Ortega actually got her start in a completely different genre: superhero. Ortega was just 11-years-old when she made her dazzling feature film debut in the blockbuster hit Iron Man 3 in 2013, appearing in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it role as the Vice President's daughter. Even the actress' most devoted fans may not have realized she joined the MCU over a decade ago; let's explore the nature...

Jenna Ortega is one of Hollywood's most sought-after talents, especially following the success of Netflix's Wednesday. She has also been a scream queen in the Scream movie franchise, as well as in Netflix's You and Ti West's X. In these franchises, Ortega has shown immense range, which has many eager to see what she will be doing in the Beetlejuice sequel.
In 2024, however, the 21-year-old Ortega had a much more controversial, provocative role in Miller's Girl. Miller's Girl includes an X-rated sex scene between Jenna Ortega and Martin Freeman thats caused a massive controversy. Directed and written by Jade Halley Bartlett, Miller's Girl explores what happens when the relationship between a student named Cairo Sweet (Jenna Ortega) and a creative writing teacher named Mr. Miller (Martin Freeman) crosses ethical boundaries. Due to the uncomfortable subject, critics correctly predicted that Millers Girl would be Jenna Ortegas most controversial film.
There are numerous aspects of the movie that make Millers Girl so controversial. A storyline surrounding a student-teacher relationship must be handled with care, lest it become problematic. Unfortunately, the film perpetuates the idea that teacher-student relationships are caused by seductive young women. It also ignores the multiple power imbalances that exist between the two main characters. However, the biggest controversy about Millers Girl centers on the sex scene between Mr. Miller and Cairo. This scene caused outrage from many viewers.

Lionsgate cannot catch a break this year. While several studios have continued to struggle at the box office in the post-covid landscape, Lionsgate, the home of beloved franchises like John Wick, The Hunger Games, and Saw, has had an uncharacteristically poor 2024, and it's had a massive effect on their box office haul.

Imaginary. Borderlands. The Crow. Megalopolis. 2024 has been a colossally bad year for Lionsgate Films. Whether it’s critical ratings or box office take, there’s not a lot to be optimistic about if you’re a fan or shareholder. This is too bad as Lionsgate has always been the studio I’ve always rooted for. As distributors of the Saw, John Wick, and Rambo they’ve always had an edge to them, giving smaller films a chance to reach larger audiences. And franchises like Twilight (purchased from Summit), Divergent, and Hunger Games showed their ability to make/acquire broadly appealing films. Then they’ve even gotten into the Oscar space with releases like La La Land, Knives Out, and Sicario. But it’s getting to the point where I groan every time the Lionsgate logo comes up as it’s no longer a sign of quality or fun.

Lionsgate has been a perhaps unappreciated player in Hollywood over the last 20 years or so. The so-called mini-major studio isn't nearly as big as the likes of Disney or Warner Bros., for example, but it is out there getting it done. From launching franchises like "Saw" and "John Wick" to jump-starting the YA trend of the 2010s with "The Hunger Games," Lionsgate has quietly been the backbone that's made the industry healthier. Heck, it's even taken home media rights that other studios are happy to abandon, which helps keep the DVD/Blu-ray market alive. Unfortunately, things are not going particularly well for Lionsgate at the box office right now, to put it mildly.
The studio has released more than a dozen films in theaters in 2024 and the hits have been modest at best, whereas the flops have been rough. Recently, the comedic action flick "The Killer's Game," which stars Dave Bautista,...

Whether they know it or not, statistically everyone who saw a film released in 2022 knows the work of Bashir Salahuddin — or, as he was known in the year’s #2 movie Top Gun: Maverick, Navy Warrant Officer Bernie “Hondo” Coleman. But comedy fans have been steeping in Salahuddin’s career for a decade. He was a writer and sometime performer on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon before his acting career took off with roles like Malik in HBO’s dramedy Looking, Netflix’s prematurely canceled Glow and the scripted true-crime series The Dropout, among many others.

November 2024 will mark two years since Wednesday first premiered on Netflix, which leaves viewers wondering why Wednesday season 2 is taking so long. Tim Burton's The Addams Family spinoff stars Jenna Ortega as the eponymous Wednesday Addams. The dark comedy series follows the gothic teen as she attends Nevermore Academy, a boarding school for "outcasts." While there, Wednesday becomes infatuated with a string of mysterious crimes, which leads her to uncover a villain hiding in plain sight.
Wednesday was a massive hit for Netflix. Audiences of all ages and demographics were invested in the unblinking and slightly sadistic Wednesday Addams, to the point where Wednesday remains the third-most-watched Netflix show in its first month of streaming. After binging all eight episodes of the first season, many audience members were eager for season 2. Wednesday season 1 left many unresolved questions like who Wednesday's stalker was, what would happen to Tyler, and if Principal Weems is really dead.

Original plans called for Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson to return for the sequel. The 2016 movie boasted visuals unlike anything we'd seen in the MCU before and delivered a clever final act which, while still heavy on VFX, played around with the concept of time in a way that largely bucked the trend of Marvel Studios' expected VFX-dominated third act battles.
Unfortunately, creative differences led to Derrickson parting ways with Marvel Studios. Fans didn't have long to be disappointed, though, as Spider-Man trilogy director Sam Raimi was soon enlisted to replace him. Loki writer Michael Waldron also came on board to rewrite Jade Halley Bartlett's (Miller's Girl) screenplay...and was still writing when cameras were rolling.

With the momentum of stardom in her favor after Netflix’s Wednesday and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Jenna Ortega will surely take on more Hollywood projects following Season 2 of Wednesday, which is currently in production.
Before these two Tim Burton projects, Ortega had roles in several other Netflix films and a television show as well as separate feature films. She got her start in a Colgate toothpaste commercial and then a Disney Channel show that mirrored the aspect of her big family.
Some might recognize Ortega as the actress who portrayed the younger version of Jane Gloriana Villanueva (portrayed by Gina Rodriguez when she’s older) in the CW’s Jane the Virgin. She also appeared in Studio 666 a horror film in which the Foo Fighters move into a storied rock ‘n roll studio that starts to haunt their work. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice star Jenna Ortega reveals that she auditioned for Denis Villeneuve's Dune. While Ortega has been acting for roughly 12 years, she has recently become one of the most sought-after actors today. While only in her early 20s, she had plenty of starring roles in projects like Scream, Miller's Girl, and Wednesday. Although her filmography is rich in the horror genre, the young actor almost had a sci-fi franchise in her resume.
While speaking with BuzzFeed Celeb on the edition of The Puppy Interview, Ortega was asked if she had any surprising auditions. She revealed that she auditioned for Dune when she was roughly 15 years old. The actor speculated that the role was for Chani, played by Zendaya, elaborating that the casting process was secretive. But while working with them was pretty much a prestigious situation for her, she also found it incredibly hard to work with some other actors, like Justin Theroux and Catherine O’Hara, both of whom are two of the most iconic veterans in the industry. In fact, the situation was so serious with the former that Ortega even found it impossible to look at him during the shoot!

Certain films, like Saltburn, contain topics, violence, and scenes too uncomfortable to watch with my parents. Films like That's My Boy and A Serbian Film tackle sensitive topics with cringe-worthy plot points. Movies like X and Miller's Girl blend inappropriate content, making them unsuitable for family viewing.
Warning: This article discusses topics of rape culture, sexual assault of minors, and extreme violence.
I enjoy watching films with my parents, but there are certain titles that I could never see with them. While Id happily sit down and watch several of the best movies of all time with members of my family, certain topics are simply too uncomfortable for me. Nobody wants to see anything with graphic sex, extreme violence, or even terrible jokes with their parents, especially me.
Of course, everyones parents are different. However, its easy to identify which movies are too weird to watch with the people who have raised you.

‘Miller’s Girl’ literally hit the theater running… from controversies. Since the movie dropped, criticism of the erotic drama’s wide age-gap romance has firmly taken center stage – it’s the sorta thing that nearly happened to ‘James Bond: No Time To Die’ but managed not to. Well, it happened to ‘Miller’s Girl’ and Jenna Ortega is here to tell us why.
Jenna Ortega – Says R-rated Movie ‘Miller’s Girl’ Isn’t Supposed To Make Viewers “Comfortable”
Do you want to be in your comfort zone while watching a movie? Skip ‘Miller’s Girl,’ ‘Wednesday’ star Jenna Ortega has spoken.
In the movie, Ortega stars as 18-year-old Cairo Sweet, who gets romantically attached to her English teacher and writing mentor, Jonathan Miller (Martin Freeman) despite the impropriety of such romance.
The criticisms might have been ramped up due to the sex scene – fantasy and all – displayed in the movie.

Jenna Ortega is opening up about the best advice given to her in her career, and how that advice helped her gain confidence in her abilities. Speaking to Vanity Fair recently, she discusses how the advice allowed her to fully tackle her doubts and insecurities, especially when doing something new. During the interview, Ortega recalls the best advice given to her was that of her cello instructor for Netflix's acclaimed series Wednesday. Her titular character plays the cello, and while Ortega herself doesn't play, she wanted her movements to be as authentic to the character as possible. She added that she wanted it to look real so that cellists didn't look at it and criticize her performance, approaching the task with the "confidence of the average white man."
"She told me that I just needed to approach everything I do in life with the confidence of the average white man.

Netflix's Top 10 lists aren't calculated just by how many people have watched them. Poorly reviewed or critically panned films have been reaching the top of Netflix's lists, leading some people to speculate about their legitimacy. Netflix supposedly has a precise equation for the Top 10 lists, but algorithms and feedback loops are bringing us homogenized, bland 'content.'
Let's face it: Netflix is the dominant streamer. Always has been. It's gotten to the point where Hulu and Disney+ want to bundle with Max to compete. While each streamer has its specific pros and cons (we prefer The Criterion Channel for just movies), Netflix itself has become synonymous with streaming. And they generally have the best original content, as well; they produce some great stuff. But something odd has been happening in the last few years that rarely happens on other streaming platforms. When critics label a movie "controversial," audiences need to ask themselves if that was the director's intended purpose of the film or if the people who actually watched the story unfold felt uncomfortable and decided to label it as such. With Miller's Girl, there is absolutely no debate; it is meant to make you cringe. Miller's Girl was initially released in theaters in January 2024, but that was short-lived as no one cared to see an erotic thriller about a student-teacher affair, even if Jenna Ortega and Mark Freeman's characters were getting hot and heavy on camera. Last year’s Miller’s Girl remains one of the most controversial movies of the year, but the controversy surrounding the movie and its content did not help it become a hit. The movie received mixed reviews and was a proper box office bomb despite a relatively small budget ($4 million), failing to earn even $1 million internationally. The movie stars Martin Freeman as a 50-something literature professor, Jonathan Albert Miller, who works in Tennessee and suddenly receives the 18-year-old Cairo Sweet, played by Jenna Ortega, as a new student.
The girl is special, intelligent, and talented, but is also seductive and presents a danger for Miller, who will break all boundaries to be with the girl, possibly ruining his career and his life as well. The movie had an interesting premise, but it seems that the fans did not appreciate it that much.

Martin Freeman and Jenna Ortega briefly found themselves subjected to some online backlash in January when they co-starred in “Miller’s Girl,” Jade Halley Bartlett’s film about an 18-year-old student who develops a crush on her 49-year-old English teacher and enters a romantic relationship with him. But while some fans were offended by the film’s content and the reality that the two actors had to film intimate scenes despite a 31 year age gap between them — a controversy that has been stoked by the film’s resurgence on Netflix — Freeman stands by his involvement in the film.
In a recent interview with The Times of London, Freeman lamented the fact that the film has been the subject of online ire. The British actor called it “a shame” that the film, which he described as “grown-up and nuanced,” was being interpreted as scandalous. He went on to draw a distinction between...

Martin Freeman and Jenna Ortega star in Miller’s Girl, an erotic thriller which recently began streaming on Netflix. Given the subject matter of Miller’s Girl, in which a high-school teacher has an inappropriate relationship with one of his students, there has been a fair share of backlash, with many focusing on the age gap between Freeman and Ortega.
While speaking with The Times of London, Martin Freeman, who is 31 years older than Ortega, defended Miller’s Girl from the backlash. The actor said the film is “grown-up and nuanced” when it comes to dealing with the age gap relationship, adding, “It’s not saying, ‘Isn’t this great?’” Stories dealing with difficult subject matter can invite backlash, which Freeman said is a shame. “Are we gonna have a go at Liam Neeson for being in a film about the Holocaust?” Freeman added.

“I am 18 and entirely unremarkable,” Jenna Ortega says at the beginning of Miller’s Girl, the feature debut of writer-director Jade Halley Bartlett. But not for long. In the psychological thriller co-starring Martin Freeman, a student-teacher relationship turns into a dangerous liaison when a lonely teen’s writing assignment sparks intimacy with a much older man.
“No one is a perfect villain or a perfect victim. They don’t exist,” Bartlett told Forbes about the film’s controversial subject matter. “These characters are quite nebulous and gray, which I think is closer to real-life people.”
