Exclusive: Range Media Partners has signed Haitian-American actor, writer, filmmaker, and artist Numa Perrier, whose well known Netflix rom-com The Perfect Find, starring Gabrielle Union and Keith Powers, won the Audience Award at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival.

Prior to directing that film, Perrier made her feature directorial debut with the critically acclaimed Jezebel, a 2019 SXSW Critics Pick hitting Netflix via Array Releasing, which she also wrote and starred in. Exclusive: Liliane Bedford has joined Confluential Films (Fancy Dance), the Black-founded and Black-owned banner of Tommy Oliver, as Senior Vice President of Film and Television, the company announced on Wednesday.

Bedford joins from Stacey Sher’s Shiny Penny Productions, where she served as Vice President of Development and Production. In her new role, she will help to manage the film and television development slates for Confluential, while expanding the company’s array of diverse content.

“Confluential Films has a long legacy of inclusivity and championing change, and I look forward to joining the talented team in continuing that tradition,” Bedford stated. “From the narratives they tell to the culture they promote, I cannot wait for this next chapter with Confluential Films in continuing the company’s rich history of powerful and meaningful content.”

The 55th NAACP Image Awards continued to honor Black excellence on Saturday night, with Queen Latifah hosting the live telecast from the Shrine Auditorium.

The Color Purple continued its winning streak on the final night of the NAACP Image Awards, taking the trophy for Outstanding Motion Picture. Fantasia Barrino also took the award for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture, with co-stars Colman Domingo and Taraji P. Henson winning their respective categories.

Domingo also won an award for Rustin in the Outstanding Actor category.

Usher was named Entertainer of the Year the same night the artist received the President’s Award. Seven Days in June was a Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick in June 2021 and a New York Times bestseller. Paul Thomas Anderson has rounded out the cast of his latest feature. Alana Haim, who made her acting debut in Anderson’s Licorice Pizza, and A Thousand and One breakout Teyana Taylor have been added to the cast, along with Wood Harris and Shayna McHayle.

Newcomer Chase Infiniti has also joined the untitled feature, which is currently in production and, as previously announced, stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn and Regina Hall. The plot of the film is being kept under wraps.

Anderson wrote the script and will produce with Sara Murphy and Adam Somner, both of whom worked with the filmmaker on Licorice Pizza.

The project is set up at Warner Bros, headed by Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, who worked with Anderson on the 2021 Oscar-nominated film during their tenure running MGM. While leading New Line, De Luca also worked with the director on Boogie Nights and Magnolia.

It’s been a big start to 2024 for Colman Domingo and Ayo Edebiri who — after earning their first Oscar nomination and Emmy win, respectively — lead the pack of film and TV nominees for the 55th NAACP Image Awards.

Domingo is nominated for three awards: outstanding actor in a motion picture for “Rustin,” outstanding supporting actor for “The Color Purple” and entertainer of the year, the ceremony’s top prize.

Edebiri is nominated for outstanding supporting actress for “The Bear” and guest actress for “Abbott Elementary.” Victoria Monét received the most nominations in the music recording categories, earning six nods including outstanding new artist. The “Jaguar II” hitmaker is followed closely by Usher, who earned five nominations including entertainer of the year.

Fantasia Barrino, Halle Bailey and Keke Palmer — three multihyphenate talents who happened to share the screen with Domingo and Usher this year — round out the nominees for that award.

Abbott Elementary really made the grade when nominations for the 55th NAACP Awards were announced Thursday.

Netflix’s Survival of the Thickest and Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story tied for second with five nods each.

It might officially be fall, but Netflix had a “Strong Black Summer.”

At least, that was the name of the streamer’s warm-weather months campaign promoting a string of TV, film and documentary projects fronted by Black talent.

Among the hot titles were Gabrielle Union’s rom-com “The Perfect Find,” the John Boyega-starring conspiratorial caper “They Cloned Tyrone,” a fourth season of the Emmy-nominated comedy “The Upshaws,” comedian Michelle Buteau’s semi-autobiographical series “Survival of the Thickest,” the “Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop” documentary, and a first look at awards contenders “Stamped from the Beginning” and “Rustin.”

“The goal of ‘Strong Black Summer’ was to generate conversation and create community with Black consumers and partners,” says Netflix’s Shelly Gillyard, vice president of marketing in the U.S. and Canada.

Eight months after it won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, “Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project” has been officially picked up by HBO Documentary Films, which is buying U.S. and Canada television and streaming rights. Backed by Confluential Films and Rada Studio and directed and produced by respected veterans Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson, producer Tommy Oliver (HBO’s “40 Years A Prisoner”), and executive producers Taraji P. Henson and Codie Elaine Oliver, the film will also screen in the Spotlight section of the upcoming 61st New York Film Festival.

To qualify for the Oscars, the film will play in theaters this fall ahead of its 2024 debut on HBO and Max. Sundance always supplies a number of Oscar nominees in the documentary race and “Going to Mars” is a strong contender.

Nearly four years after its last new episode aired, Suits is having a moment in the streaming world.

The former USA Network series set a viewing time record for an acquired series in the week of June 26-July 2. Suits had 3.14 billion minutes of watch time, according to Nielsen, easily surpassing the previous mark of 2.49 billion minutes for Manifest (before it became a Netflix original) in June 2021. The show became available on Netflix June 23; it also streams on Peacock.

The huge tally for Suits dwarfed the two other shows that topped the billion-minute mark for the week: The debut of The Witcher’s third season on Netflix pushed that show to 1.31 billion minutes of viewing, and The Bear grew by 18 percent week to week to 1.01 billion minutes. The latter is the second Hulu series (and the first produced by FX) to break the billion-minute threshold for a single week, after The Handmaid’s Tale.

Season two of The Bear served up a strong showing on the streaming charts for its premiere week.

The FX-produced Hulu series drew 853 million minutes of viewing time for the week of June 19-25, according to Nielsen — more than twice its best showing for season one last year. The Bear made Nielsen’s top 10 original series one time in 2022 with 349 million minutes.

The 853 million minutes for The Bear placed it second among original series, behind Netflix’s Black Mirror (1.55 billion minutes), and fifth among all titles. Former USA series Suits (2.32 billion minutes) was the overall leader for the week, which saw its 136-episode library debut on Netflix (it also streams on Peacock). Swat (1.04 billion minutes across Netflix, Hulu and Paramount+) and Netflix’s movie Extraction 2 (1.03 billion minutes) also had more than a billion minutes of watch time.

The story follows Jenna Jones (Gabrielle Union) and Eric Combs (Keith Powers) who gravitate toward each other despite a substantial age gap and the fact that Eric is the son of Jenna’s boss Darcy (Gina Torres).

The two pair up for a creative project for Darzine, Darcy’s fashion magazine. The project, which eventually becomes “The Perfect Find” highlights fashions inspired by Black starlets of Hollywood’s past. This show is witty, comedic, emotional, and inclusive, and even tackles serious issues in the perfect way, leaving no crumbs. It’s like watching a 30-something coming-of-age show about a plus-size black woman trying to make it big in the looming fashion industry. Michelle is especially charismatic, even as she plays a loud and often clumsy protagonist. It’s an endearing quality, unlike some similar leads who come across as obnoxious and living in a fairy tale. Behind “The Witcher” Season 3 on the English TV list was sci-fi anthology series “Black Mirror” Season 6, which logged 5.4 million views this week after leading last week’s list.

Grand proclamations are yelled from across parks and outside apartment buildings. Everyone’s dressed in the most maximalist attire: loud prints, geometrically striking jewelry, intense hairstyles. It all seems rather unbelievable until you remember the ridiculousness is part of the fun.

Like any good romantic comedy, The Perfect Find constructs a world into which you can escape. Jenna (Gabrielle Union) is a 40-something (the ambiguity of her age is significant to the plot) fashion editor who has spent the last year recovering from a devastating public breakup. Her 10-year relationship with Brian (D.B. Woodside), an equally ambitious careerist, crashed profoundly after Jenna sought clarity about their future. The 40-year-old is sporting baggy sweats, and not because she’s headed to the gym. She’s been living in her parents’ home licking her wounds, for a year, when her mother calls her out on it. The scene between mother (Janet Hubert) and grown-ass daughter is amusing and promising. As are the musical and visual choices director Numa Perrier makes that evoke Old Hollywood in a film with characters decidedly not Old Hollywood.

When Gabrielle Union-Wade turned 50 last October, the veteran actor and producer experienced a personal transformation, which has also filtered into her latest work. This era of her career, she says, is about embracing the possibilities.
