The opening credits of The Perfect Find are straight out of a fashion fever dream. Set to the Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday classic “You Can’t Lose a Broken Heart,” the sequence — which you can watch above only on Tudum — is an animated collage blending New York City, magazine covers and old Hollywood as it introduces you to Gabrielle Union’s glamorous “It” girl, Jenna Jones.
“I have a big love for vintage Black glamour [and] vintage Black Hollywood,” director Numa Perrier tells Tudum about anchoring the film in nostalgic rom-com aesthetics. “Jenna is a fan of classic films, so I was really intentional about wanting to bring those films into our film.”
And indeed, Jenna’s life seems especially charmed as we witness her meteoric rise as half of the mythical power couple known as “BriJenna” alongside real estate mogul Brian (D.B. Woodside). But the illusion shatters when their...

Look, if your goal is to Netflix and chill, the last thing you want to do is put on a documentary about insider trading. Or maybe you do; different strokes for different folks and all that. But by and large, your aim should be to get your partner in the mood by watching attractive people suck each other's faces.
Of course, you don't need a partner to enjoy a good romantic comedy. Perhaps you just need reminding that love is possible in this crazy world of ours after experiencing some heartbreak of your own. With a Netflix subscription, you have a cornucopia of options to choose from.
Netflix has really cornered the market on romantic films, as every movie on this list is original to the platform. These are the best rom-coms on Netflix to make you laugh and, more importantly, make you feel. And who knows? Maybe these stories...

Exclusive: Fresh off the TIFF premiere of their new documentary Vice Is Broke, Get Out producer QC Entertainment has enlisted Gabrielle Union (Riff Raff) to star in The Casket Girls, a new horror film to be directed by Justin Dyck (Anything for Jackson), which they will produce and fully finance.
Written by Thomas Lennon & Robert Ben Garant (Night at the Museum), with revisions by Keith Cooper (Anything for Jackson) & Dyck, The Casket Girls is inspired by the true story of a group of young women sent from France to New Orleans to become brides to French colonists in the early 1700s. They arrived with small chests, or “caskets” of their belongings, hence the name given by locals. According to legend, upon the girls’ arrival, the homicide rate in New Orleans rose dramatically, with stories of men drained of their blood. This September, we're getting a pre-spooky season Friday the 13th, and while these Fridays tend to be big ones for horror movie fans, Netflix won't be releasing a new horror movie. Instead, usually spook-ified occasion debuts Joey King's latest collaboration with Netflix, the dystopian young adult sci-fi flick Uglies. It's King's second Netflix movie of 2024, following the hit rom-com A Family Affair.
Based on the novel of the same name by Scott Westerfeld, Uglies makes its long-awaited premiere on Netflix on Friday, Sept. 13 as the big movie release of the week. Jumping off of the success of last week's hit Netflix original movie Rebel Ridge, King's latest starring role has all of the potential to be another blockbuster and another sci-fi win for Netflix this year following Atlas.
Wondering at exactly what time you can start watching Tally Youngblood's rebellious adventures in a dystopian future perfection holds utmost importance?...

It might officially be fall, but Netflix had a “Strong Black Summer.”
At least, that was the name of the streamer’s warm-weather months campaign promoting a string of TV, film and documentary projects fronted by Black talent.
Among the hot titles were Gabrielle Union’s rom-com “The Perfect Find,” the John Boyega-starring conspiratorial caper “They Cloned Tyrone,” a fourth season of the Emmy-nominated comedy “The Upshaws,” comedian Michelle Buteau’s semi-autobiographical series “Survival of the Thickest,” the “Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop” documentary, and a first look at awards contenders “Stamped from the Beginning” and “Rustin.”
“The goal of ‘Strong Black Summer’ was to generate conversation and create community with Black consumers and partners,” says Netflix’s Shelly Gillyard, vice president of marketing in the U.S. and Canada.

Nearly four years after its last new episode aired, Suits is having a moment in the streaming world.
The former USA Network series set a viewing time record for an acquired series in the week of June 26-July 2. Suits had 3.14 billion minutes of watch time, according to Nielsen, easily surpassing the previous mark of 2.49 billion minutes for Manifest (before it became a Netflix original) in June 2021. The show became available on Netflix June 23; it also streams on Peacock.
The huge tally for Suits dwarfed the two other shows that topped the billion-minute mark for the week: The debut of The Witcher’s third season on Netflix pushed that show to 1.31 billion minutes of viewing, and The Bear grew by 18 percent week to week to 1.01 billion minutes. The latter is the second Hulu series (and the first produced by FX) to break the billion-minute threshold for a single week, after The Handmaid’s Tale.

Season two of The Bear served up a strong showing on the streaming charts for its premiere week.
The FX-produced Hulu series drew 853 million minutes of viewing time for the week of June 19-25, according to Nielsen — more than twice its best showing for season one last year. The Bear made Nielsen’s top 10 original series one time in 2022 with 349 million minutes.

How ‘The Perfect Find’ Director Numa Perrier Honored and Updated Tia Williams’ Book At the Same Time
Netflix’s “The Perfect Find” director Numa Perrier collected generational references in her film adaptation of Tia Williams’ novel.
The story follows Jenna Jones (Gabrielle Union) and Eric Combs (Keith Powers) who gravitate toward each other despite a substantial age gap and the fact that Eric is the son of Jenna’s boss Darcy (Gina Torres).
The two pair up for a creative project for Darzine, Darcy’s fashion magazine. The project, which eventually becomes “The Perfect Find” highlights fashions inspired by Black starlets of Hollywood’s past. Jenna and Eric also bond over their love for old Hollywood — like Nina Mae McKinney, who pops up throughout the film with clips from “Hallelujah!,” a Greta Garbo clip from “The Flesh and Devil” and Spike Lee’s “School Daze,” featured at a drive-in movie date.

Although there’s nothing that really fits the bill when it comes to Michelle Buteau’s new rom-com series Survival Of The Thickest, we’ve tried to make a compilation of shows that may scratch that itch the show left behind. This show is witty, comedic, emotional, and inclusive, and even tackles serious issues in the perfect way, leaving no crumbs. It’s like watching a 30-something coming-of-age show about a plus-size black woman trying to make it big in the looming fashion industry. Michelle is especially charismatic, even as she plays a loud and often clumsy protagonist. It’s an endearing quality, unlike some similar leads who come across as obnoxious and living in a fairy tale. While Netflix alone brings us a smorgasbord of shows that fit this category of “period time” cravings with romance, fashion, and all things cozy, they’re usually hit or miss. So let...

Once again. “John Wick: Chapter 4” (Lionsgate) ($5.99) is #1 at iTunes and Google Play, while “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” at $19.99 (Universal) is #1 at Vudu.
Like most weeks, Netflix’s top 10 movie list is topsy-turvy. New at #1 is “Run Rabbit Run,” an Australian horror film the streamer acquired out of the Sundance Film Festival’s Midnight section. It stars “Succession” actress Sarah Snook as a fertility doctor who notices her daughter’s strange behavior.
Beyond that, “Mario” is in two second-place spots while “Fast X” is #2 at Vudu, helped by its $19.99 price. “The Covenant” (MGM) is #3 at iTunes, “The Machine” (Sony) at $19.99 #3 at Vudu, with “Fast X” taking third at Google Play.

Actress Gina Torres made sure that there was more to her character Darcy in Netflix’s “The Perfect Find” than the narcissistic label, which stemmed from Tia Williams’ novel of the same name.
Darcy offers the story’s protagonist Jenna Jones (Gabrielle Union) a job after Jenna goes through a very public breakup and firing, but she and Jenna go way back — mainly as nemeses. Once Jenna meets Darcy’s son Eric Combs (Keith Powers), the two cannot stay away from each other, and it’s only after they kiss that Jenna learns Eric is Darcy’s son.
“I loved the old villains of 90s nighttime soaps, so I would say that that kind of started there, but I also wanted people to be treated to her humanity as well,” Torres told TheWrap. “That she just wasn’t this two-dimensional villain that wanted to make Jenna’s life miserable that...

Note: The following contains spoilers for “The Perfect Find” ending.
“The Perfect Find” director Numa Perrier isn’t sure the film would have been made had the original ending of Tia William’s 2016 novel stayed intact.
In the Netflix adaptation of Williams’ book Jenna Jones (Gabrielle Union) and Eric Combs (Keith Powers) fall in love, but their age gap presents challenges. Jenna, 40, wants to get married and have a family, but Eric, 22, just graduated from the University of Southern California with a master’s in film, eager to start his career. The fact that Eric’s mother Darcy (Gina Torres) technically brought them together by hiring them at her magazine only complicates things. A few months after they separate, deciding that their timing doesn’t work out to be together, Jenna asks Eric to meet up to tell him that she’s pregnant.

Netflix's romantic comedy The Perfect Find starring Gabrielle Union and Keith Powers ends with a heartfelt moment and a curious dedication, "In Loving Memory of Matthew", referring to producer Matthew Myers. While the dedication may have piqued the interest of several viewers upon first sight, there were few clues as to who exactly the dedication was meant for. But, as most dedications are, the one at the end of The Perfect Find was to honor the passing of someone close to production.
As it turns out, the dedication was made in honor of the passing of The Perfect Find's executive producer, Matthew Myers. As one of his final projects before his passing, the Netflix original took the time to carry his memory and legacy shining a light on one of the forces working tirelessly behind the camera to make movie magic.

The ending of Netflix's The Perfect Find concludes with its main characters finally coming together and reaching a healthy place in their relationship, but there's more to the movie that needs exploring. The 2023 rom-com follows 40-year-old Jenna (Gabrielle Union) after she breaks off an engagement of 10 years and is fired from her magazine job. She begins working for her frenemy, Darcy (Gina Torres), and then meets a cute young guy at an event. Unfortunately, she learns the next day that the guy she hit it off with is actually Darcy's 20-something son, Eric (Keith Powers).
Despite the age difference and the dangers of Jenna dating her boss's son, she and Eric pursue a relationship. This leads to a lot of tension, secrets, and sneaking around. Ultimately, the movie explores how far two people are willing to go for love, even when all odds are against them. It has a...

Gabrielle Union’s Jenna Jones stumbles upon a forbidden love in more ways than one in the Netflix adaptation of Tia Williams’ book “The Perfect Find.”

Romantic comedies on Netflix are a genre of their own. Here, a boy meets a girl, and after a little hardship in the middle of the movie, things fall into place, and they get a happy ending. The formula has remained largely unchanged since Notting Hill, when Julia Roberts’ starlet character fell in love with the dorky but charming Hugh Grant’s bookstore owner character. However, the audience still returns to romantic comedies simply because of the comforting feeling these movies bring us and also because of the celebration of love they so wholesomely display. Numa Perrier’s latest romantic comedy on Netflix follows this formula to a T and still manages to appeal to a wide audience. Starring Gabrielle Union and Keith Powers in the lead roles, the movie talks about a 40-year-old fashion designer who falls in love with a handsome young film studies graduate. Are Jenna and...

Netflix’s new rom-com “The Perfect Find” isn’t short on great music. The original film stars Gabrielle Union and Keith Powers as Jenna Jones and Eric Combs as well as Gina Torres, who plays Darcy Hale. Jenna’s journey back into fashion comes at a price — begging her old nemesis for a job at her fashion magazine Darzine. Jenna also puts herself back out there for love, and she finds a real connection with Eric — until she realizes he’s Darcy’s son.
The film adaptation of Tia Williams’ novel contains a great soundtrack of music by Black artists. The soundtrack complements references to Nina Mae McKinney, Aretha Franklin and more, and strides between older hits from past decades and modern singles that are popular in the present day to capture the full spectrum of art.

It’s important to note right away that Numa Perrier’s The Perfect Find isn’t anything we haven’t scene before. In fact, it’s all the rom-com tropes we love (or hate) combined with a high-fashion setting, which also happens to celebrate old-time cinema. Adapted from the book of the same name by Tia Williams, Leigh Davenport’s script sees a down-and-out, middle-aged woman pick up and stitch together the broken pieces of her life. Her complicated new journey opens up an interesting conversation about women starting over when the world around you tells us it’s too late. Though The Perfect Find struggles with the romance aspects, its commentary on finding love late in life is a pure delight.

The movie, based on bestselling author Tia Williams's novel of the same name, follows the meet-cute-gone-wrong of fired-and-rehired fashionista Jenna (Union) and her random fling-turned-colleague Eric (Powers) - who happens to be the son of Jenna's tyrant boss, Darcy (Gina Torres). The film also stars Aisha Hinds, Db Woodside, Janet Hubert, and La La Anthony.
"I think that that intimidation, and it's not in a bad way, it's more to just keep me on my toes really."
The unconventional love story in director Numa Perrier's vintage Hollywood-inspired rom-com challenged Union and Powers in more ways than one. But working alongside Union, Powers says, especially encouraged him to stay on his A game. "I mean, you just want to make sure you're up to par,...

The Perfect Find is a film directed by Numa Perrier starring Gabrielle Union and Keith Powers. Based on the novel by Tia Williams.
It’s Friday, the perfect day for a romantic comedy with enough arguments to enchant the most sensitive hearts and also with enough tests to scare away (definitely) those who are looking for something more in cinema.
Another romantic comedy? Yes, but this one has its very funny moments and, despite the formula, manages to entertain thanks to the brilliant and inspired performances of its supporting characters.
Alisha Hinds and Gina Torres are spectacular and add the finishing touch to this romantic comedy that, this time, really is a comedy.

Don’t expect this combination to revolutionize cinema, because it definitely won’t. It’s a story about romance between generations, a portrait of success in a city...

Boldness defines Numa Perrier’s soapy romantic comedy The Perfect Find. Characters make unbelievable decisions in the name of love. Grand proclamations are yelled from across parks and outside apartment buildings. Everyone’s dressed in the most maximalist attire: loud prints, geometrically striking jewelry, intense hairstyles. It all seems rather unbelievable until you remember the ridiculousness is part of the fun.
Like any good romantic comedy, The Perfect Find constructs a world into which you can escape. Jenna (Gabrielle Union) is a 40-something (the ambiguity of her age is significant to the plot) fashion editor who has spent the last year recovering from a devastating public breakup. Her 10-year relationship with Brian (D.B. Woodside), an equally ambitious careerist, crashed profoundly after Jenna sought clarity about their future. To escape the tabloid frenzy, Jenna moves back in with her parents.
Perrier economically reviews this backstory in the film’s opening credits,...

In just a short amount of time, actor Keith Powers has already had several notable performances on screen. He's starred in "Straight Outta Compton," BET's "The New Edition Story," and "The Tomorrow War." The actor shows no signs of slowing down, either. He is now starring alongside Gabrielle Union in the new Netflix rom-com "The Perfect Find" and is set to appear in an upcoming film titled "The Uglies" with Joey King, Chase Stokes, and Laverne Cox.
When he isn't working, Powers prefers to stay out of the spotlight and maintains a private personal life, which applies to the people he dates. It's unclear if he's currently single or taken, but he has been linked to two people in the public eye: rapper Saweetie and fellow actor Ryan Destiny.
Keep reading to find out everything we know about Powers's love life!

‘The Perfect Find’ Review: Gabrielle Union and Keith Powers Charm in Fashion-Forward Netflix Swooner
Fashionista Jenna Jones (Gabrielle Union) took quite the tumble from her position in New York’s world of style. In “The Perfect Find” — Netflix’s visually vibrant, cinema-loving, if not quite perfect, rom-com — her professional and romantic plummet is documented in opening credits that cleverly use an animated collage to relate her story.
So, when we meet Jenna in person ,she’s without a job, and her man (D.B. Woodside) of 10 years has moved on … or so it seems. The 40-year-old is sporting baggy sweats, and not because she’s headed to the gym. She’s been living in her parents’ home licking her wounds, for a year, when her mother calls her out on it. The scene between mother (Janet Hubert) and grown-ass daughter is amusing and promising. As are the musical and visual choices director Numa Perrier makes that evoke Old Hollywood in a film with characters decidedly not Old Hollywood.

When Gabrielle Union-Wade turned 50 last October, the veteran actor and producer experienced a personal transformation, which has also filtered into her latest work. This era of her career, she says, is about embracing the possibilities.
“Whatever I thought that my dreams were, I was making them small,” Union-Wade told Variety at the American Black Film Festival (ABFF). “Turning 50 is about making things bigger by expanding the idea of what the possibilities could even be.”
Union-Wade debuted two projects at ABFF: the Netflix rom-com “The Perfect Find” and the BET+ docuseries “My Journey to 50,” which chronicled her birthday pilgrimage to Africa. She celebrated the BET+ series first, hosting a private bowling and ice-skating bash at the Miami Beach Edition on June 15, the same night the doc began streaming.
In a quick speech, Union-Wade thanked guests for joining her in her “second hometown” of Miami. “Wade County, baby!” she shouted out, referencing...
