HBO’s “The Last of Us,” the acclaimed dystopian survival drama from showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, led all Emmys craft categories July 12 with 12 (the first TV Academy recognition for a live-action video game adaptation). Right behind was the streamer’s “The White Lotus” with 11 nominations. Mike White’s vacationing social satire relocated to Sicily and now competes for Best Drama Series after winning Best Anthology/Limited Series for its first season.
“The Mandalorian” followed with nine nominations, a sharp falloff for Season 3 after the Disney+ “Star Wars” juggernaut dominated its first two seasons with 15 and 17 noms, respectively. Also sharing nine noms were Netflix’s popular “Addams Family” spin-off “Wednesday” and the final seasons of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (Prime) and “Ted Lasso” (Apple TV+), both up from the previous season.

Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities is a unique anthology series that offers eight stories curated by the legendary Academy Award-winning director. From alien creatures, to witches, to rats, Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities boasts a wide range of spooks and specters that--often fatally--put each episode's human protagonists to the test. The series debuted on Netflix in October 2022 and garnered favorable reviews from critics and fans alike.
The effects-heavy series thrives thanks in large part to the efforts of Herne Hill Media, the VFX studio instrumental in bringing Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities' scariest monsters to life. Even more impressive, although key Herne Hill team members had collaborated with del Toro before, Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities was the debut project by the company, which was essentially tasked with the creation of eight effects-heavy movies on a TV schedule. This story about “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities” first appeared in the Limited Series/Movies issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
It’s enough of a task to create the look for one horror mini-feature, but imagine if your assignment was a total of eight, in the style of “Tales from the Crypt” or “Alfred Hitchcock Presents.” And each had a different director. And none of the stories were directly related to one another. And all were overseen by a beloved Oscar-winning filmmaker whose name alone is a brand. “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities” production designer Tamara Deverell knew going in that it would be challenging to serve every vision, with filmmakers as diverse as Jennifer Kent (“The Babadook”), Panos Cosmatos (“Mandy”), Vincenzo Natali (“Splice”) and Ana Lily Amirpour (“A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night”) as her just-for-starters roster.

“Elvis” director of photography Mandy Walker won Feature Film at the ASC Awards March 5, when the American Society of Cinematographers handed out its honors at the 37th annual awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Walker’s win in the feature film category could prove prescient; 17 out of the last 36 years found the ASC film winner winning the Academy Award. But it’s worth noting that Oscar nominees “Tár” and “All Quiet on the Western Front” were not among the ASC nominees.
In the TV categories, “The Old Man” took awards for Motion Picture, Limited Series, or Pilot Made for Television and Episode of a One-Hour Television Series – Commercial, while “Barry” won Episode of a Half-Hour Television Series for its Season 3 finale and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” won Episode of a One-Hour Television Series – Non-Commercial for its Season 4 finale.

Mandy Walker has won the American Society of Cinematographers feature-film award for “Elvis,” making her the first woman ever to win that award. She is only the third female nominee in the category, after Rachel Morrison for “Mudbound” in 2018 and Ari Wegner for “The Power of the Dog” last year.
Walker now has the chance to become the first woman to win the Oscar for cinematography, where she is also the third female nominee in the gender-neutral Oscars category that took the longest to nominate a woman. Her competitors at the Oscars include two who were also nominated by the ASC, Roger Deakins for “Empire of Light” and Darius Khondji for “Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truth,” along with James Friend for “All Quiet on the Western Front” and Florian Hoffmeister for “Tar.”

Roger Deakins (“Empire of Light”), Greig Fraser (“The Batman”), Darius Khondji, Claudio Miranda (“Top Gun: Maverick”), and Mandy Walker (“Elvis”) were nominated Monday for the 37th annual ASC Awards (to be held March 5 at the Beverly Hilton and live streamed).
For the legendary Deakins, who finds himself in the underdog position for exquisitely lensing Sam Mendes’ underappreciated ode to cinema, this marks his ASC-leading 17th nomination. The two-time Oscar winner (“1917” and “Blade Runner 2049”) has won five times, tied with Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki, the three-time Oscar winner, who didn’t make the cut for “Amsterdam,” which never got any critical traction. Fraser, last year’s Oscar and ASC winner for “Dune,” has two wins and three noms. For Matt Reeves’ “The Batman,” he provided a gritty noir look. If a fake exploding head is going to look believable, you need to fill it up first. Just ask Dennis Berardi, the visual effects supervisor on “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities.”
“We packed it with bits of lookalike meat and some fleshy bits. It was all stuff that wasn’t real organic. It needed to keep and fit the molds,” Berardi said.
It wasn’t the only part of this process that needed some practical glop in order to bring something terrifying to life. All of that work was in service of “The Viewing,” the Panos Cosmatos-directed episode of the Netflix horror anthology. In it, a handful of strangers are summoned by a wealthy eccentric (Peter Weller) to witness a strange addition to his collection. Nobody's telling horror stories quite like Mike Flanagan right now. His films and TV shows are equal parts heartbreaking and terrifying. His characters are often holding onto deep-seated emotional wounds, many of which are brought painfully to the surface in the face of some monstrous threat or supernatural danger. Even when he's adapting the works of literary titans like Stephen King and Shirley Jackson, Flanagan carefully re-works and re-purposes the source material, making it firmly his own.
His latest Netflix series, "The Midnight Club," once again sees Flanagan adapting someone else's work, this time that of Christopher Pike's 1994 young adult horror novel of the same name, with "Once Upon a Time" alum Leah Fong serving as the show's co-creator. Flanagan was among the young readers who took to Pike's book upon its release and he's been hoping to adapt it to the screen ever since. With its premiere...

Exclusive: Netflix has opted not to order a second season of Resident Evil, its action horror series loosely based on the popular video game franchise. The news, which comes a month and a half after the series’ July 14 release, is not entirely surprising as the drama did not have a particularly strong showing on Netflix’s Top 10 and cost vs. viewing is the streamer’s leading renewal criterion.
Running partly in the shadow of mega genre hit Stranger Things, which was released within the same time frame, Resident Evil debuted at No. 2 with an Ok 72.7 million hours viewed. But It did not deliver the big Week 2 bump one would like to see for a new series as word of mouth spreads, raking in 73.3M hours viewed in its second week for a No. 3 finish before dropping precipitously and falling out of the Top 10 after only three weeks. Spooky season is right around the corner, and the folks at Netflix have an incredible treat in store. "Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities" will debut on the streamer over the course of four nights leading up to Halloween weekend, delivering chills and thrills curated by one of the modern masters of horror.
The anthology series features eight episodes, each with their own self-contained story and a different director. Horror anthologies are a time-honored genre tradition going all the way back to "The Twilight Zone" and "Creepshow," so a new one helmed by Guillermo Del Toro feels like a stroke of genius. The director has created some of the most beautiful and brutal fantasy horror flicks of the past few decades, including "The Devil's Backbone," "Pan's Labyrinth," and his Academy Award-winning "The Shape of Water," and two of the eight episodes are new stories directly from his macabre mind,...

Rupert Grint is clearly in a horror phase in his career, between his starring role in Servant and his upcoming roles in an episode of Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities and M. Night Shyamalan's upcoming film Knock at the Cabin. While he has certainly come a long way since his days in Harry Potter, it still may be hard to see him facing off against horrors without remembering Ron Weasley's petrifying fear of spiders.
Grint has proven himself to be an exceptional actor, and while fans love to see him growing, they'll always have a soft spot for his first role. Ron Weasley was such a memorable character, from his steadfast loyalty to his great one-liners. Even all these years later, fans continue to love the character, going to Ranker to vote for Ron Weasley's best quotes from the movies.

Emily Carmichael, co-writer of Jurassic World Dominion, and Erik Singer, dialect coach on Elvis, are engaged. The pair, whose movies are currently charting in the top three at the U.S. box office, confirmed the news with The Hollywood Reporter and shared their exclusive (and playful) engagement portraits.
Carmichael and Singer met in Budapest on the set of Terminator: Dark Fate. Singer, who has also worked on Mulan, The Survivor and Cabinet of Curiosities, was serving as the dialect coach while Carmichael (Pacific Rim: Uprising) was there visiting the set. He confirms that he fell for her immediately, and they started dating in November 2018.
“She was hilarious and razor-sharp,” says Singer, who worked closely with Elvis breakout Austin Butler, training him to master Elvis Presley’s voice and articulation for the demanding (and critically acclaimed) transformation.
