The idea of a Barney movie being released by A24, produced by Academy Award-winning actor DanielKaluuya, and written by and starring Emmy-winning actress Ayo Edebiri sounds like a joke in an SNL sketch. However, it most certainly is real. In fact, A24's Barney might be one of the most fascinating IP adaptations since Barbie. The Barney movie was first announced in 2019 but now appears to be gaining some real traction as Kaluuya is putting a strong creative team together for the live-action reboot.
Variety reports that Ayo Edebiri has joined the in-development Barney movie as both screenwriter and star. Daniel Kaluuya’s 59% Productions is partnering with A24 to produce the film, working closely with Mattel Films, the owners of the Barney IP. Even though Kaluuya has been overseeing Barney's creative development as lead producer, he is not expected to star in the film. Details on the plot of Barney are under wraps,...

If you were planning on discounting the upcoming "Barney" movie entirely, you might want to think again — because Ayo Edebiri has been tapped to write the script.
Mattel Films and A24 are teaming up for a "Barney" movie, and not only will Edebiri write it but, according to the official press release announcing the news, she may also star in the film as well. (Specifics on Edebiri's potential role aren't clear as of this writing.) Meanwhile, the movie is being produced by another industry powerhouse in the form of Oscar-winner Daniel Kaluuya, whose company 59% Productions is behind the project.
This is definitely an encouraging and, frankly, bizarre update (in a good way) when it comes to the "Barney" movie. So, what else do we know?
Well, in 2023, Kevin McKeon, a Mattel executive, revealed that the movie about the beloved purple dinosaur will be a lot weirder (and cooler?) than you probably expected.

Ayo Edebiri to Write and in Talks to Star in Live-Action ‘Barney’ Movie for A24
Emmy-winning “The Bear” breakout Ayo Edebiri will write and is in talks to star in a live-action adaptation of the beloved children’s program “Barney” for A24, the studio announced on Tuesday. Mattel, Daniel Kaluuya’s 59% Productions and A24 are producing the feature.
Originally debuting in 1988, “Barney” became a global sensation, with the “Barney & Friends” series running for 14 seasons on PBS before concluding on November 2, 2010.
A24’s feature film has been in the works for a few years with Kaluuya attached. Plot details are under wraps, but Edebiri is an accomplished writer and comedian in addition to award-winning actress. She wrote on “What We Do in the Shadows” and “Dickinson” before landing her role on “The Bear,” for which she won an acting Emmy in the show’s first season.
Next up, Edebiri stars in the A24 thriller comedy “Opus” alongside John Malkovich, which hits theaters in March. She...

“The Night Agent” has returned with many new faces. Now that Peter Sutherland is officially a night agent, he must take on a new conspiracy mission with a new team.
Gabriel Basso will pick up the action, starring as Peter, and Luciane Buchanan will return as Rose. Though the couple ended their relationship at the end of Season 1, when Rose hears Peter is in trouble, she jumps at the opportunity to rekindle their relationship.
Because this season follows Peter on a new mission, several members of the original cast will not be back for Season 2, though, including Hong Chau and Robert Patrick.

Kevin Costner’s anticipated new Western film series kicked off with “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1,” which hit theaters last summer as the first of four parts and is now streaming on Netflix. And the movie boasts a pretty massive ensemble cast of characters.
The “Yellowstone” actor invested $38 million of his own money into the passion project, which charts the United States’ Western expansion pre- and post-Civil War over the course of 15 years.
The first film in the franchise establishes four storylines and sets the stage for the subsequent films. Below, TheWrap created a cheat sheet to help you keep track of each of the characters and their overlapping plot lines throughout this American saga.
“Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2” still doesn’t have a release date.

Set in the League of Legends universe, Netflix's Arcane uses the multiplayer online battle arena video game's extensive lore and engrossing world to tell the story of sisters Vi (Hawkeye's Hailee Steinfeld) and Jinx (Fallout's Ella Purnell). Soon enough, Vi and Jinx find themselves not just embroiled in the conflict, but on opposing sides of Arcane's war. Hayes Davenport is a comedy writer with an enviable resume, having worked on shows like “Eastbound & Down,” “Family Guy,” “Vice Principals” and “Dickinson.” Yet he left that career behind for a three-year run working at City Hall, with a special focus on helping Los Angeles’ homeless population.
It’s a journey he first started by supporting the campaign of Nithya Raman, who became a Los Angeles City Council member for the 4th District in 2020.
“It was Nithya laying out a path for me to go out and talk to people, something I wouldn’t have felt like I could just do on my own,” he says. “From gradually seeing opportunities to actually help people get off the street … once you’ve done it a few times, you just can’t not do it. It activates and empowers you in a way that very few jobs can.”

Anne with an E was definitely one of the best shows on Netflix. Even though the period drama was canceled in 2019 after three seasons, us fans still think about it and are upset it did not continue and get a proper ending. If you're like me and miss Anne with an E, then you might be looking for something to fill that void. Well, we've got some recs for you!
The Artful Dodger
Stream on Hulu and Disney+
Even though The Artful Dodger has a male lead, that doesn't mean there aren't similarities between the titular character, aka Jack Dawkins, and Anne. Plus, the story serves as a sequel to the events in Charles Dickens' famous novel Oliver Twist, and features a strong female lead, Lady Belle Fox, played by Maia Mitchell. And spoiler alert, there's a romance that brews between Jack and Belle that you will ship just like Anne and Gilbert.

Fantasy shows often introduce audiences to amazing fictional worlds, and while these are great, sometimes a fantasy series set in a historical period inside our very own reality is even better. This is what is known as a historical fantasy series. While it is definitely intriguing to be thrown into a world unique from our own, and forced to understand new mechanics and types of magic, some truly outstanding fantasy series don't need to go that far. By putting a spin on a time period viewers have studied in school, the best fantasy shows make magic out of the ordinary.
The best historical fantasy shows are those which use equal parts history and equal parts fantasy. It would be easy for a show to use their historical background as nothing more than that: a background. However, the greatest historical series use their time period to their advantage, creating a vivid...

Hey, quick question ... what the cluck is happening?
Just as multiple streaming platforms have begun offering subscription bundle plans and the Streaming Wars seem to finally be over — a wildly unexpected force has entered late in the game with hopes of shaking things up, funded not by Big Tech, but by Big Fundamentalist Pickle-Brined Fried Chicken. I swear on my life this is not a headline from The Onion come to life, but as first reported by Deadline, Chick-fil-a is launching its own streaming service. I'm already offering my deepest condolences to the first creative who earns the inevitable call from their reps saying, "Chick-fil-A passed" when their project is rejected.
I, and I cannot stress this enough, absolutely despise this announcement, but I will hate it a little bit less if they're at least willing to commit to the bit and call it "Flick-fil-a." Chick-fil-A's...

Ayo Edebiri's TV streak continues with Tales of the Tmnt, receiving praise for her performance as April O'Neil. Edebiri's successful roles in The Bear and Big Mouth prove her strong range and comedic talent in Hollywood. With 3 major franchises under her belt, including Tmnt and Inside Out, Edebiri's career is on a rapid rise in the industry.
Ayo Edebiri may be relatively new to the acting world, but she has already had an incredible career, and her newest show proves how great her TV streak has been so far. Although she officially started acting in 2014, Edebiri began getting regular roles around 2020, with her most recognizable hit, The Bear, coming two years later. Not only did the show earn the actress numerous personal awards, but The Bear set an Emmy nomination record, giving Edebiri mainstream popularity, and she has continued to utilize this positive momentum which her new streaming hit has proven.

Zosia Mamet shines in Netflix's raunchy comedy, The Decameron, despite the show's mixed reviews. Before The Decameron, Mamet guest starred in Dickinson, putting forth a hilarious take on Little Women novelist Louisa May Alcott. Mamet's role in Dickinson, another period comedy, prepared her for The Decameron.
Zosia Mamet's role in The Decameron isn't her first time nailing the absurdity of a period comedy, as the actor notably guest starred in Apple TV+'s masterful Dickinson. Still, Mamet takes her comedic abilities to new heights in her latest project. Dubbed Netflix's "new Bridgerton," The Decameron actually couldn't be further from Shonda Rhimes' well-mannered period romance. Instead, the adaptation of Giovanni Boccaccio's 14th-century collection of short stories aims to be a raunchy comedy set during the 1300s. However, so far the response to the eight-episode medieval black comedy has been mixed.

My Lady Jane, a new series landing on Prime Video, is the latest in a steadily continuing trend in historical fiction television. Taking a historical figure of some significance, such as Dick Turpin or Catherine the Great, and retelling or fictionally expanding their life stories through the lens of anachronistic comedy. Some became wildly successful, like The Great and Our Flag Means Death, others, like Dickinson and The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin, didn't get the notice they perhaps deserved. While the idea is not new, it has undeniably been en vogue for a good couple of years now.

Those who have already binged Bridgerton Season 3 (maybe even multiple times) will have a while to wait before Season 4, but there are several shows that can satisfy the need for elaborate period piece drama in the meantime. Two other shows, The Buccaneers and Dickinson, share the commonality of a modern soundtrack, much like that of the Shondaland show save the string cover element. The Buccaneers also has a debutante scene for young American girls hoping to secure marriages.
Julian Fellowes also created two lengthy period drama shows — Downton Abbey and The Gilded Age — which unfold in an ensemble-style fashion with various families and servant characters having whole plot lines. Gossip Girl will satisfy those missing Lady Whistledown’s columns that balance between journalism and nosiness.

Since Apple TV+ launched as the company’s streaming TV service in November 2019, there has been a steady stream of quality original movies and shows. It only took a few years and Apple TV+ earned a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series for Ted Lasso and even an Academy Award for Best Picture for Coda. That made history as the first movie distributed by a streaming service to win the illustrious award. But those two projects are just the tip of the iceberg.
Other talked-about originals from Apple TV+ include The Morning Show, Servant, Silo, Black Bird, Severance, For All Mankind, and Dickinson. However, there are a few shows on Apple TV+ that haven’t gotten as much attention as these but are just as good, some even better,...

“Dickinson” showrunner Alena Smith detailed the challenges of making the Apple TV+ period drama show starring Hailee Steinfeld as its queer female lead, playing poet Emily Dickinson. Apple kept her in the dark about the show’s success, Smith said, which made creating the show significantly more difficult.
The first season of the series arrived on the streamer in 2019, the second one on Jan. 8, 2021. Season 3 concluded the arc Smith envisioned for the project and came out Nov. 5, 2021.
Describing what drove streaming services to make creative projects, Smith explained to Harper’s Magazine that streamers were looking to grow their subscriber numbers by taking big creative swings that pulled in new audiences.
“It’s like a whole world of intellectuals and artists got a multibillion-dollar grant from the tech world,” Smith said. “But we mistook that, and were frankly actively gaslit into thinking that that was because they cared about art.

If there was a poll to decide who the biggest pop star in the world currently is, majority of the votes would undoubtedly go to Taylor Swift. The singer’s cult fan following and immense influence over the younger generation has made her a pop culture phenomenon. In addition, Swift’s romance with Travis Kelce has ensured that there has been a meteoric rise in the popularity and financial growth of football.

Last month, it was announced that writer/producer Judalina Neira is developing a TV series reimagining of the classic sitcom Bewitched for Sony Pictures Television, aiming to turn it into an “irreverent hourlong” show. NBC clearly likes the idea of reviving Bewitched, because now Deadline has broken the news that the network has their own “Bewitched-inspired” show called Something Wicked in the works, and this one already has a star attached: June Diane Raphael, who may be best known for playing the character Brianna Hanson for the 94 episodes that make up the Netflix series Grace and Frankie, which ran for seven seasons.
Raphael is also writing and executive producing Something Wicked with Dickinson creator Alena Smith. A multi-camera comedy, the show is described as having a Bewitched-type premise and will also serve as an homage to TV sitcom classics. Exclusive: NBC is developing Something Wicked, a multi-camera comedy starring June Diane Raphael and written and executive produced by Raphael and Dickinson creator Alena Smith.
Something Wicked is described as a comedy with a Bewitched-type premise and an homage to TV sitcom classics. It examines the condition of modern adult womanhood and how even with witchcraft, balancing everything is impossible.
Smith and Raphael write and executive produce. Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, is the studio.
This is the latest high-profile multi-camera comedy project at NBC. The network, which has pivoted toward an all-multi-camera comedy slate over the last year and a half, also has a sitcom pilot headlined by Reba McEntire.
Bewitched, which originally aired on ABC from 1964-72, starred Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha Stevens, a witch who marries an ordinary mortal man, played by Dick York and later Dick Sargent, and vows to lead the life of a typical suburban housewife.

While Apple TV+ has been cornering the market on dramas lately, it’s also a great place to head for light, airy comedies. It's one of the few streamers willing to commit to the half-hour format while also making shortform comedy worth watching. Of course, there’s the Emmy-winning Ted Lasso and shows like Dickinson and Shrinking, but the streamer hasn’t slowed down since Jason Sudeikis moved back to Kansas for good, and their newest offering, The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin, is proof.

Linda Cardellini, Edi Patterson, Tim Heidecker and Toby Huss will star in David Gordon Green’s “Nutcrackers.” They join the previously announced Ben Stiller, who will play a work-obsessed man who travels to rural Ohio to look after his four nephews after their parents die in a car accident.
Heidecker will play a local deputy, Patterson has been cast as an orphan profiteer, Huss portrays an eccentric empty-nester millionaire and Cardellini takes on the role of a social worker who helps Stiller’s character on his journey to find a home for the boys. The film is based on a script by Leland Douglas and was developed by Rough House Pictures.
Rivulet Films’ Rob Paris and Mike Witherill, Red Hour Films’ Stiller and John Lesher, and Rough House Pictures’ Nate Meyer are producing. Rivulet fully financed the film, which recently wrapped production outside of Cincinnati.
