The lineup for the 2025 edition of the Aftershock festival has just been unveiled, featuring headliners blink-182, Deftones, Korn, and Bring Me the Horizon.

The four-day fest is set for October 2nd-5th at Discovery Park in Sacramento, California, and also features A Perfect Circle, Good Charlotte, Turnstile, Marilyn Manson, Gojira, Bad Omens, Rob Zombie, Acid Bath, Lamb of God, All Time Low, Dream Theater, Gwar, Bruce Dickinson, Knocked Loose, and others among the 115-plus acts on the bill.

The idea of a Barney movie being released by A24, produced by Academy Award-winning actor DanielKaluuya, and written by and starring Emmy-winning actress Ayo Edebiri sounds like a joke in an SNL sketch. However, it most certainly is real. In fact, A24's Barney might be one of the most fascinating IP adaptations since Barbie. The Barney movie was first announced in 2019 but now appears to be gaining some real traction as Kaluuya is putting a strong creative team together for the live-action reboot.

Variety reports that Ayo Edebiri has joined the in-development Barney movie as both screenwriter and star. Daniel Kaluuya’s 59% Productions is partnering with A24 to produce the film, working closely with Mattel Films, the owners of the Barney IP. If you were planning on discounting the upcoming "Barney" movie entirely, you might want to think again — because Ayo Edebiri has been tapped to write the script.

Mattel Films and A24 are teaming up for a "Barney" movie, and not only will Edebiri write it but, according to the official press release announcing the news, she may also star in the film as well. (Specifics on Edebiri's potential role aren't clear as of this writing.) Meanwhile, the movie is being produced by another industry powerhouse in the form of Oscar-winner Daniel Kaluuya, whose company 59% Productions is behind the project.

This is definitely an encouraging and, frankly, bizarre update (in a good way) when it comes to the "Barney" movie. So, what else do we know?

Well, in 2023, Kevin McKeon, a Mattel executive, revealed that the movie about the beloved purple dinosaur will be a lot weirder (and cooler?) than you probably expected.

Emmy-winning “The Bear” breakout Ayo Edebiri will write and is in talks to star in a live-action adaptation of the beloved children’s program “Barney” for A24, the studio announced on Tuesday. Mattel, Daniel Kaluuya’s 59% Productions and A24 are producing the feature.

Originally debuting in 1988, “Barney” became a global sensation, with the “Barney & Friends” series running for 14 seasons on PBS before concluding on November 2, 2010.

A24’s feature film has been in the works for a few years with Kaluuya attached. Plot details are under wraps, but Edebiri is an accomplished writer and comedian in addition to award-winning actress. She wrote on “What We Do in the Shadows” and “Dickinson” before landing her role on “The Bear,” for which she won an acting Emmy in the show’s first season.

Momentum is gaining on A24’s live-action Barney movie from Mattel Films and Daniel Kaluuya’s 59% Productions, as the companies have set Emmy and Golden Globe winner Ayo Edebiri to write the screenplay and also have her in talks to star.

“The Night Agent” has returned with many new faces. Now that Peter Sutherland is officially a night agent, he must take on a new conspiracy mission with a new team.

Gabriel Basso will pick up the action, starring as Peter, and Luciane Buchanan will return as Rose. Though the couple ended their relationship at the end of Season 1, when Rose hears Peter is in trouble, she jumps at the opportunity to rekindle their relationship.

Because this season follows Peter on a new mission, several members of the original cast will not be back for Season 2, though, including Hong Chau and Robert Patrick.

Solomon’s upcoming projects include Steven Soderbergh’s “The Christophers,” set to star Ian McKellen, Michaela Coel and James Corden and about the estranged children of a once-famous artist who hire a forger to complete his unfinished works so they can be discovered and sold after his death. Production is due to start in early 2025. Solomon is also developing “The Spot,” a psychological thriller which he created and is executive producing. Hayes Davenport is a comedy writer with an enviable resume, having worked on shows like “Eastbound & Down,” “Family Guy,” “Vice Principals” and “Dickinson.” Yet he left that career behind for a three-year run working at City Hall, with a special focus on helping Los Angeles’ homeless population.

It’s a journey he first started by supporting the campaign of Nithya Raman, who became a Los Angeles City Council member for the 4th District in 2020.

“It was Nithya laying out a path for me to go out and talk to people, something I wouldn’t have felt like I could just do on my own,” he says. “From gradually seeing opportunities to actually help people get off the street … once you’ve done it a few times, you just can’t not do it. Variety has announced its 10 Actors to Watch for 2024, naming breakthrough and up-and-coming actors whose stars are on the rise. Over the years, the list has included more than 35 Oscar winners and nominees, including Viola Davis, Mahershala Ali, Timothée Chalamet and Brie Larson. The10 to Watch lists have been a Variety staple since 1997, with Actors to Watch highlighted since 1998, with many performers from awards season prospects.

Glen Powell’s upcoming Hulu comedy series “Chad Powers” has added four recurring guest stars.

Variety has learned that Clayne Crawford, Toby Huss, Colton Ryan, and Xavier Mills have all joined the series, in which Powell will play the title role in addition to co-creating it. The cast also includes Perry Mattfeld as Ricky, Quentin Plair as Coach Byrd, Wynn Everett as Tricia, Frankie A. Rodriguez as Danny, and Steve Zahn as Jake Hudson.

The official description for “Chad Powers” states, “When bad behavior nukes hotshot Qb Russ Holliday’s (Powell) college career, he disguises himself and walks onto a struggling Southern football team as the talented, affable Chad Powers.” The show is based on the Chad Powers character created by Eli Manning for his Epsn+ docuseries “Eli’s Places.”

Zosia Mamet shines in Netflix's raunchy comedy, The Decameron, despite the show's mixed reviews. Betty Buckley, the Tony-winning and Grammy-nominated actor and singer, has signed with Sugar23.

Best known for her performances in on stage, particularly for her soaring rendition of “Memory” in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Cats,” Buckley has also been active in television, film and as a concert performer. Next up, Buckley will star in A24’s “Eternity” opposite Miles Teller and Elizabeth Olsen. She also is the creator, writer and star of the short animated film “The Mayfly,” which premiered at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival.

Sugar23 was founded in 2017 by Michael Sugar, an Oscar-winning manager-producer who has helped bring the likes of “Spotlight,” “Dickinson,” and “13 Reasons” to screens.

Other theater roles include Buckley’s Olivier-nominated performance as Norma Desmond in the West End production of “Sunset Boulevard” (she later played the part on Broadway). She also starred in the original Broadway production of “The Mystery of Edwin Drood,” as well as in the cult musical “Carrie.

My Lady Jane, a new series landing on Prime Video, is the latest in a steadily continuing trend in historical fiction television. Taking a historical figure of some significance, such as Dick Turpin or Catherine the Great, and retelling or fictionally expanding their life stories through the lens of anachronistic comedy. Exclusive: Gus Halper (Rustin), Aliyah Camacho (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) and Michael Mando (Better Call Saul) have joined the cast of Prime Video‘s graphic novel series, Criminal, in recurring roles. Since Apple TV+ launched as the company’s streaming TV service in November 2019, there has been a steady stream of quality original movies and shows. It only took a few years and Apple TV+ earned a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series for Ted Lasso and even an Academy Award for Best Picture for Coda. That made history as the first movie distributed by a streaming service to win the illustrious award. But those two projects are just the tip of the iceberg.

“Dickinson” showrunner Alena Smith detailed the challenges of making the Apple TV+ period drama show starring Hailee Steinfeld as its queer female lead, playing poet Emily Dickinson. Apple kept her in the dark about the show’s success, Smith said, which made creating the show significantly more difficult.

The first season of the series arrived on the streamer in 2019, the second one on Jan. 8, 2021. Season 3 concluded the arc Smith envisioned for the project and came out Nov. 5, 2021.

Describing what drove streaming services to make creative projects, Smith explained to Harper’s Magazine that streamers were looking to grow their subscriber numbers by taking big creative swings that pulled in new audiences.

“It’s like a whole world of intellectuals and artists got a multibillion-dollar grant from the tech world,” Smith said. “But we mistook that, and were frankly actively gaslit into thinking that that was because they cared about art.

Last month, it was announced that writer/producer Judalina Neira is developing a TV series reimagining of the classic sitcom Bewitched for Sony Pictures Television, aiming to turn it into an “irreverent hourlong” show. NBC clearly likes the idea of reviving Bewitched, because now Deadline has broken the news that the network has their own “Bewitched-inspired” show called Something Wicked in the works, and this one already has a star attached: June Diane Raphael, who may be best known for playing the character Brianna Hanson for the 94 episodes that make up the Netflix series Grace and Frankie, which ran for seven seasons.

Raphael is also writing and executive producing Something Wicked with Dickinson creator Alena Smith. Exclusive: NBC is developing Something Wicked, a multi-camera comedy starring June Diane Raphael and written and executive produced by Raphael and Dickinson creator Alena Smith.

Something Wicked is described as a comedy with a Bewitched-type premise and an homage to TV sitcom classics. It examines the condition of modern adult womanhood and how even with witchcraft, balancing everything is impossible.

Smith and Raphael write and executive produce. Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, is the studio.

This is the latest high-profile multi-camera comedy project at NBC. The network, which has pivoted toward an all-multi-camera comedy slate over the last year and a half, also has a sitcom pilot headlined by Reba McEntire.

Linda Cardellini, Edi Patterson, Tim Heidecker and Toby Huss will star in David Gordon Green’s “Nutcrackers.” They join the previously announced Ben Stiller, who will play a work-obsessed man who travels to rural Ohio to look after his four nephews after their parents die in a car accident.

Heidecker will play a local deputy, Patterson has been cast as an orphan profiteer, Huss portrays an eccentric empty-nester millionaire and Cardellini takes on the role of a social worker who helps Stiller’s character on his journey to find a home for the boys. The film is based on a script by Leland Douglas and was developed by Rough House Pictures.

Rivulet Films’ Rob Paris and Mike Witherill, Red Hour Films’ Stiller and John Lesher, and Rough House Pictures’ Nate Meyer are producing. Rivulet fully financed the film, which recently wrapped production outside of Cincinnati.

Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night Live film SNL 1975 has found its Gilda Radner, as first reported by Jeff Schneider and confirmed by Deadline.

Ella Hunt will play Radner in the upcoming origin film, which is based on the true story of Saturday Night Live’s opening night show in October of 1975. Other newly announced cast members include Emily Fairn as Laraine Newman and Kim Matula as Jane Curtin.

The three actors join an already impressive cast. Gabriel Labelle (The Fablemans) will play SNL creator Lorne Michaels, Rachel Sennott is set to play original staff writer Rosie Schuster, and Cooper Hoffman (Licorice Pizza) will play NBC executive Dick Ebersol. Reitman will direct from a script he co-wrote with Gil Kenan, based on interviews conducted with Saturday Night Live’s inaugural cast, crew, producers, and writers.

The film’s logline reads: “On October 11, 1975, a troupe of young comedians changed TV forever.

Ayo Edebiri is set as the Feb. 3 host of “Saturday Night Live,” and will be joined by Jennifer Lopez as musical guest.

The episode will cap off a string of recent successes for Edebiri, who is best known for playing Sydney Adamu in FX’s “The Bear.” Earlier this month, she won the supporting comedy actress Emmy for her performance in the show’s first season as well as the Critics Choice and Golden Globe awards for lead comedy actress for her turn in Season 2.

Edebiri, a first-time “Saturday Night Live” host, was also recently seen in 2023 films “Bottoms” and “Theater Camp.” As a writer, she has worked on Netflix’s “Big Mouth” and Apple TV+’s “Dickinson,” playing supporting roles in both, as well as FX’s “What We Do in the Shadows,” which earned her a Writers Guild of America Award nomination.
