However, the series never saw its conclusion, as while working on Vagabond, Inoue went on multiple hiatus because of his health, and finally, in 2015, he decided to completely stop working on it because of creative reasons. Berserk is one of the supreme manga that belongs to the seinen or dark fantasy genre. Guts serves as a layered protagonist for the manga, but fans are of the opinion that his character carries some cliches that halt the manga from going beyond what it is now.

The manga is often compared to Vagabond, another manga from the same genre. Unlike Berserk, the protagonist of Vagabond is more complex and is not as protected by plot armor as Guts.
