Star Trek's cultural dominance spans decades, peaking in the 1980s and 1990s when series like The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager made waves on syndicated television. The franchise petered out for a while after the failings of Star Trek: Enterprise, laying dormant for a while until the advent of streaming services brought Star Trek television back into the fold.
Arguably the best new series to come from the modern wave of Trek streaming shows, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has successfully captured the spirit of what made the franchise so popular to begin with. The series understands, better than any other, that mixing genres and tones is what makes the franchise so indelible, as best exhibited in one of Strange New World's best episodes.

Michael Dorn played Worf in Star Trek: The Next Generation for seven seasons. Initially not set to be part of the main cast, Worf quickly became a series regular and a fan favorite. His lack of understanding of jokes as well as his strength against various alien species. In a show that had great supporting characters, Dorn stood out.
Show creator Gene Roddenberry was reportedly not too keen on adding a known alien species to the show but eventually relented with Worf. However, the showrunner reportedly gave a lot of freedom for the actor to create quirks, which defined one of the most important characteristics of Worf.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz are in talks with Disney+ to helm a live-action Power Rangers television series. The first entry in Saban's Power Rangers franchise was the original 1990s TV series The Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, which followed a group of five teenagers with attitude who gain the ability to morph into superpowered heroes. With 30 seasons of continuity on TV, the last attempt to reboot Power Rangers in 2017 failed at the box office.
Now, TheWrap has reported that Disney+'s Percy Jackson team is being eyed for aPower Rangers live-action series. Based on Rick Rordian's fantasy children's books, Steinberg and Shotz have led Percy Jackson and the Olympians since its premiere in 2023. The award-winning Greek mythology series has been praised for its faithfulness to Riordan's work, and has already been renewed for season 3 ahead of season 2's late 2025 premiere.

Star Trek and Star Wars are two of the most popular sci-fi franchises. While the former was the first to appear on small screens with The Original Series, the latter made the genre popular with its groundbreaking special effects and blockbuster storytelling. The popularity of Star Wars even led Star Trek to be revived and several other spinoffs were developed.
Although there have been several films, Star Trek is usually considered to be best made for TV or in the long-form format. Star Wars too has branched out to streaming with its Disney+ offerings, with shows like The Mandalorian and Andor gaining success. With both franchises spanning wide, naturally there will be some actors crossing over.

A fun detail about all the characters on "Star Trek: The Next Generation": They're all nerds. Sure, they're intelligent and cultured, and many of them are socially graceful -- even humorous and charming -- but they all possess intellectual and cultural obsessions that skew heavily into nerdy territory. Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart), for instance, is a literature nerd and an archaeology nerd. Geordi (LeVar Burton) is clearly an engineering nerd. And, yes, the taciturn, humorless Worf (Michael Dorn) is a nerd.
Worf lost his biological parents as a child, and he was raised on Earth by human parents. Perhaps longing for cultural meaning, Worf began to study the customs and attitudes of Klingons, and he became careful to follow them down to the letter. He became a nerd for his own culture. Indeed, he became so obsessed with honor, it made him awkward in social situations. Worf yelled at...

More than a quarter of a century after its release, Galaxy Questremains among the gold standards in space sci-fi parody films. Starring Tim Allen, Alan Rickman, and Sigourney Weaver, the movie that follows the cast of a 1970s space TV show who become heroes of the galaxy, is by some considered a bit of a love letter to the Star Trekfranchise.
During a panel at the Indiana Comic Convention, Collider’s Steve Weintraub asked some Star Trek: The Next Generation alums what they thought of 1999’s Galaxy Quest.
“It’s perfect. It perfectly captures the essence (of Star Trek) with love and humor and intelligence…it’s so well-crafted,” said Denise Crosby, who played Lieutenant Tasha Yar in the first season of Tng and the Season 3 episode, “Yesterday’s Enterprise.”

Back in the early 2000s, it looked like "Star Trek" was pretty much done for. After 9/11, as wars began, audiences weren't really in the mood for a sci-fi franchise about gentleness, peace, and diplomacy. The national mood was reflected in the failure of Stuart Baird's "Star Trek: Nemesis" in 2002, often called one of the worst in the franchise. Then "Star Trek: Enterprise" was canceled in 2005. It wouldn't be until 2009 that "Star Trek" would be revived, in the form of J.J. Abrams' rebooted feature film.
This time, however, "Star Trek" was faster, simpler, and more violent. Abrams' film was not about peace and diplomacy but trauma and revenge. The reboot set the tone for "Star Trek" for the next decade, ensuring that newer "Trek" projects were all about high-octane action and a little more rough-hewn.

Star Trek: Picard may have only lasted three seasons, but how they rank is notable!
Star Trek has had more than its share of big shows over its long existence, yet Picard was still a huge one. At long last, Patrick Stewart would reprise his role as Jean-Luc Picard in a series set decades after Star Trek: Nemesis. Besides showcasing Stewart, it would also rewrite the Trek universe with a new canon taking place of the old after the various shows, as well as showing how the galaxy evolved.
The show had an interesting arc, with the first two seasons seen as rough despite Stewart's fine performance as the elder Picard. The third season was hailed for being a terrific sequel to The Next Generation with some bold twists. So, here's a quick look at how each season of Star Trek: Picard ranks for anyone who wants to catch up on this series!

Without Tim Russ’ Commander Tuvok, there is no Star Trek: Voyager. The character was the cause of the show’s setting and is one of the most important supporting characters in the series starring Kate Mulgrew. Actor Russ had already been in multiple roles in the franchise before he became a regular with Tuvok.
Tim Russ has played multiple one-off roles in the franchise before playing Commander Tuvok in Voyager. However, he was reportedly almost cast in another important role in one of the franchise’s most successful shows, Star Trek: The Next Generation. While he did not get the part, Russ said he was glad he did not have to play that role.

In 2017, "Star Trek" returned to the small screen after a 12-year hiatus with the debut of "Star Trek: Discovery," a big-budget show with slicker production values than the franchise had ever seen. It debuted on Paramount+ (still called CBS All Access in 2017), and it was to be the first of many new "Star Trek" shows that the streaming service would debut over the next few years. It was followed by "Short Treks," "Star Trek: Picard," "Star Trek: Lower Decks," and "Star Trek: Prodigy." The original U.S.S. Enterprise would also make a guest appearance in the second season of "Discovery," inspiring an Enterprise-set spinoff called "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds." Paramount+ also recently debuted the TV movie "Star Trek: Section 31."
Despite the glut of "Star Trek," however, fans weren't always on board. Some old-school Trekkies didn't like the new violent tone of "Discovery," as it didn't quite match the dry,...

Star Trek is one of the longest-running sci-fi franchises around, and William Shatner was there right at the beginning, playing Captain Kirk in the first-ever episode of Star Trek: The Original Series in 1966. Shatner is a fan of the way the franchise has come back in the age of streaming, with lots of new shows airing over the past several years. And people are watching; according to TheWrap, Star Trek has made over $2.6 billion for streaming services to date.
How to capitalize on this newfound interest? At least one Star Trek writer is trying to lure Shatner back into his Starfleet uniform, and while that's something producers have tried to do ever since his last appearance as Kirk in 1994's Star Trek Generations, but it sounds like Shatner is interested in whatever this new idea is.

Forty years ago, author William Gibson brought the world a cyberpunk novel called Neuromancer – and an adaptation of that story has been trudging its way through development hell pretty much ever since. Versions of a feature film adaptation have passed through the hands of directors like music video maker Chris Cunningham, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and The Blob‘s Chuck Russell, Torque‘s Joseph Kahn, Cube‘s Vincenzo Natali, and Deadpool‘s Tim Miller. An adaptation of Neuromancer is currently moving forward as a 10-episode series that’s set up at Apple TV+, and Variety reports that Clémence Poésy of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon and Tenet has signed on to play a character named Marie-France Tessier.

Who doesn’t love the drama and intrigue of a well-written suspenseful medical drama series? As a kid, I loved Doogie Howser, M.D., and how this socially awkward teenage doctor (Neil Patrick Harris) would solve impossible medical cases despite the misgivings of attending adult doctors and nurses.
Medical drama series have been a fan favorite pastime since the first American medical drama Dr. Kildare (starring Richard Chamberlain) aired in the 1960s. Since then, we have cheered, mourned, and sobbed our way through medical melodrama in series such as ER, Chicago Med, The Good Doctor, Boston Med, House, Private Practice, Nurse Jackie, and arguably the most successful medical drama series with 19+ seasons – Grey’s Anatomy.

The latest shakeup in the world of media has resulted in Disney laying off nearly 6% of its total staff across ABC News and its TV division. Per Variety, via a source close to the matter, the 6% figure means that about 200 workers across both branches will be losing their jobs.
Also, as part of the cuts, the company is discontinuing its FiveThirtyEight (538) data unit that had been part of ESPN before being absorbed by ABC News. The outlet had become a top source for analyzing polling data before various elections in the U.S. Disney did not make executives available for comment, Variety states.

In the "Star Trek: Picard" episode "Watcher", Picard (Patrick Stewart) travels back to the year 2024 to investigate a strange case of futuristic causality. His investigation took him to a bar in Los Angeles located at 10 Forward Ave., a bar that was overseen by a younger version of Picard's old friend Guinan (Ito Aghayere). The timeline is a little screwy in "Picard," as Trekkies already knew that Guinan (based on a real person) already looked like Whoopi Goldberg in the year 1893. But whatever. Mere details. This is an alternate version of Guinan.
Guinan and Picard connect frequently at 10 Forward to discuss his time-travel mission, and how it connects to the trickster deity Q (John de Lancie), an old foe of Guinan's. Cheryl Gates McFadden was a dancer before she was an actress. She studied theater in college (she has a Bachelor of Arts degree) and lived in Paris for a spell, performing with the celebrated movement coach Jacques Lecoq. In New York in the 1970s, she taught dance at various colleges, and formed her own theater troupes and comedy companies. In the 1980s, she landed a few high-profile gigs serving as a choreographer and movement coach on "The Muppets Take Manhattan" and "Labyrinth." She can be seen giving her commentary in a making-of documentary on the "Labyrinth" DVD.

When Academy Award winner Akiva Goldsman isn't thinking about the ongoing battle of the making of Constantine 2 or the epic follow-up to I Am Legend's alternate ending, the acclaimed writer and director has had his mind on the world of legendary '60s sci-fi. Irwin Allen was behind the eclectic retro-futuristic shows like Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Land of Giants, and The Time Tunnel, which happen to be the three shows that Legendary Television has hired Goldsman to recreate for a modern audience.
While it may sound odd that the same visionary writer that brought fans both the moving drama Cinderella Man and the goofy comic book film Batman Forever is now working on a re-imagined retro sci-fi TV universe, Goldsman has always had a diverse portfolio. He has worked on a variety of projects, like the Best Picture winner A Beautiful Mindand the hit...

Legendary Television is teaming up with Oscar-winning writer and producer Akiva Goldsman to bring new life to three classic Irwin Allen sci-fi series. Goldsman, known for his work on A Beautiful Mind and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, is set to reimagine Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Land of the Giants, and The Time Tunnel.
The goal is to modernize these iconic shows while staying true to their original appeal. Jon Jashni will serve as executive producer, with Derek Thielges co-producing.
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea originally aired from 1964 to 1968 and followed a nuclear submarine on thrilling underwater adventures. The Time Tunnel, which ran for one season in 1966, was about two scientists lost in time. Land of the Giants, airing from 1968 to 1970, told the story of a spaceship crew stranded on a planet where everything was oversized.

Starting in 2017 with Star Trek: Discovery, fans were ushered into the 'Nu Trek' era of Star Trek. It's an era that started with the aforementioned Discovery series and has gone through Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Prodigy, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The era is far from done, but those are the key series that have made up this new era.
During the Nu Trek Era, one of the things that have become commonplace is the reliance (or overreliance) on past characters and actors from previous shows. Every show has either over-relied on previous characters or previous talents to bolster their show. It started with Spock and later Christopher Pike and Una Chin-Riley in Discovery (among others). Lately, we've seen the likes of Chakotay and Harry Kim pop up in Star Trek: Prodigy and Star Trek: Lower Decks' respectively.

William Shatner will turn 94 in March, but the acting icon seems to be as busy as ever. He's set to appear in the Jason Priestley-directed hockey comedy "Keeper of the Cup," and recently provided the voice of Keldor on the animated series "Masters of the Universe: Revolution." Must be that clean Canadian living.
Since he's still plugging away, you might be tempted to wonder if he could make one last visit to the bridge of the Starship Enterprise. If so, you must not be a "Star Trek" fan, because as anyone up on the franchise's overarching narrative knows, Kirk is, canonically, quite dead. He was killed on the planet Veridian III by a falling bridge while battling the villain Soran (Malcolm McDowell) alongside Patrick Stewart's Captain Jean-Luc Picard, and there's no "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock" scenario -- which cost us a Khan spinoff -- through which he could be resurrected.

William Shatner might be stepping back into the shoes of Captain Kirk. At a recent panel at Fan Expo Vancouver, Shatner revealed that he’s been approached again to reprise his iconic role in the Star Trek universe.
Despite being asked to return many times, he made it clear that any comeback must be meaningful. Shatner seemed impressed by a writer he spoke to and is now waiting to hear more details about a potential pitch.
This would be a huge moment for Star Trek fans, as Shatner’s last live-action appearance as Kirk was in Star Trek Generations in 1994. After that, Kirk’s character was killed off, and the death scene remains one of the most memorable in the franchise.
Interestingly, Kirk’s body was seen in a stasis chamber in Star Trek: Picard (2023), which opens up a possibility for his return through advanced 25th-century technology. This could allow...

Arguably, three of the most popular franchises in recent (or past or future) memory are Back to the Future, The Lord of the Rings, and Star Trek, and the stars of all three recently appeared at a Vancouver convention. Christopher Lloyd, John Rhys-Davies, and William Shatner all appeared at the recent Fan Expo Vancouver and posed for an iconic photo together.
Lloyd, who played Dr. Emmett “Doc” Brown in the Back to the Future trilogy, posted an epic photo to the social media site X that featured himself, Star Trek’s Captain James T. Kirk (Shatner), and The Lord of the Rings trilogy’s Gimli (Davies). Lloyd captioned the picture: “The final frontier, the future, or middle-earth…your choice.”

In the two-part "Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Scorpion", Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) found that she had to pilot the U.S.S. Voyager through a portion of space that was overrun by the Borg. The Borg, however, are too busy to stop and deal with the Voyager, as they are dealing with a destructive new foe known only as Species 8472. It seems that the Borg tried to puncture the membrane between dimensions and invade a parallel universe that is filled entirely with liquid. The 8472 aliens from the liquid dimension, however, were far too aggressive and powerful for the Borg to take on, and found themselves being handily destroyed.
Janeway, sensing an opportunity, struck a bargain with the Borg, asking for safe passage through their space in exchange for aid with Species 8472. As a liaison between the Voyager and the Borg, a single drone, known only as Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan...

Seven of Nine remains one of the most beloved characters in the Star Trekfranchise. A former Borg drone rescued by the crew of Star Trek: Voyager, she quickly became a stand-in for square pegs of all varieties, as well as the franchise's unofficial ambassador for ex-Borg. Her return in Star Trek: Picard was met with thunderous applause from the Star Trek faithful, and fans have pushed for her continued presence in the franchise as it moves forward. It's an impressive legacy, and in many ways, no other single character can replace her.
Ironically, Star Trek: Lower Decks may have quietly found a similar figure to fill in the gap while fans wait for her possible return. The saga of Badgey -- a homicidal hologram who becomes the crew's greatest foe -- produced a benign duplicate named Goodgey, who remained a part of the Cerritos crew for the rest of the series.

Way back in 1986, when "Star Trek: The Next Generation" was still in development, the original casting sheets called for actresses to play a 15-year-old character named Leslie Crusher, the daughter of Dr. Beverly Crusher. "Her remarkable mind and photographic memory," the character rundown read, "make it seem not unlikely for her to become, at 15, a Starfleet acting-ensign. Otherwise, she is a normal teenager." As casting and development continued, however, Leslie was transformed into a teenage boy named Wesley, and more closely modeled after Gene Roddenberry's own 15-year-old self (Roddenberry's middle name is Wesley).
Wesley wasn't widely liked by Trekkies, as he seemed too much like a brown-noser. He was too eager to please the adults in his life, too well-behaved, and definitely too smart. Fans point to the instances wherein a teenage boy, working with the best and brightest in Starfleet, managed to be the only one to solve a massively difficult space conundrum.

Stuart Baird's 2002 film "Star Trek: Nemesis" was one of the franchise's several death knells to come during the early 2000s. "Star Trek: Voyager" came to a close in mid-2001, ending a long-running period of Trek ascendancy. "Star Trek: Enterprise" debuted in late September 2001, and it served as a prequel to the original "Star Trek," set a century before the days of Captain Kirk. It looked different, had a different tone, and aimed to bring Trek to a new generation. Sadly, because of the 9/11 attacks, the world was no longer in the mood for a long-in-the-tooth sci-fi franchise that focused on diplomacy, making peace, and living in harmony. Audiences were now more intent on war, retribution, and violence, and "Star Trek" no longer had a place in the world.
In 2002, "Star Trek: Nemesis" was released to unenthused audiences and low box office receipts. Made for a budget of $60 million, "Nemesis" only earned $67 million worldwide,...

On the original "Star Trek," the computers on the U.S.S. Enterprise were operated by a series of switches, dials, knobs, and buttons, many of them unlabeled. For the most part, the switches' functions remained obscure to viewers. It seemed that a skilled Starfleet officer, while sitting on the bridge, would simply have to know which switches activated what system just to perform even the most basic tasks on board a starship. Perhaps attentive Trekkies may have been able to look closely at the "Star Trek" actors and discern what buttons they were pushing when Captain Kirk (William Shatner) gave an order to go to warp, but said actors may admit that they more or less pushed buttons at random.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is pretty great, right? It's a prequel series for Star Trek: The Original Series and does a good job showing some great stories of the USS Enterprise before James T. Kirk took it over. The series relies heavily on its relation to the original series quite a bit.
Not only does it borrow from the original show by using characters like Kirk, Spock, Nurse Christine Chapel, Nyota Uhura, and Montgomery "Scotty" Scott, but it also plays off of the original pilot for Star Trek, which featured Christopher Pike, Number One (later Una Chin-Riley) and of course Spock. It's essentially a continuation of that original pilot.
It combines the original pilot (The Cage), the details of the eventual pilot (Where No Man Has Gone Before), and the subsequent series that is Star Trek: The Original Series while combining it with a fresh coat of paint and...

We've already touched on how Kathryn Janeway, and by proxy her actress Kate Mulgrew, appeared in over 200 episodes across Star Trek. For 30 years, and across two series, Mulgrew has built up a huge resume in Star Trek alone. She surpasses all of her Voyager and Prodigy castmates in appearances, and only bows out to three people; Colm Meaney, Michael Dorn, and Majel Barrett.
When we look at her fellow Voyager castmates, she nearly doubles some of her colleagues, like Jeri Ryan. The actress, who played Seven of Nine across two series (Voyager and Picard), has appeared in 125 episodes. 100 of them just with Voyager. While that's an impressive number, more than anyone on Star Trek: Enterprise ever got, it's actually not that impressive against her Voyager colleagues.

When the Borg were first introduced in the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Q Who", they were ineffable, mysterious, and terrifying. They were a race of cyborgs that were bound by a single machine consciousness, existing only to grow and expand. They did this by stealing resources from others. When the Borg encountered a starship, they would scan it, find technology they didn't have, carve it up, and absorb its pieces into their own cube-shaped craft. To shore up their numbers, they would kidnap humanoid species as "assimilate" them. That is: implant their bodies with tubes and computers and force them to serve as mindless robot drones.
The Borg returned throughout "Next Generation," and each time were described as having a collective consciousness. It wouldn't be until "Star Trek: First Contact" in 1996 that the Borg would be likened to a beehive.

When we talk about the greatest captain in Star Trek history, we don't often mention Kathryn Janeway. It's a shame because she should be in the conversation. The two names that get mentioned the most, and maybe rightfully so (or not rightfully so depending on your point of view) are Jean-Luc Picard and James T. Kirk.
Played first and most famously by Patrick Stewart and William Shatner respectively, Picard and Kirk have long been the franchise's standard bearers. As the first two series captains, they often are pitted against one another in debates, with many being split on who really is the best captain of the franchise.
While both men, and even others like Benjamin Sisko and Christopher Pike have a claim to the proverbial throne, Janeway has arguably the strongest argument for being the top captain.
Unlike every other captain (or eventual admiral) in Star Trek's long canon of television leaders,...

Sir Patrick Stewart has had an incredibly venerated and celebrated career over his 38-year-long stint in the film and television industry. However, before his Hollywood debut, the actor had accumulated decades of experience on the stage while working at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and National Theatre.

It was, quite understandably, not a smooth transition for Sir Patrick Stewart during the initial years of his Hollywood career. The wildly different attitude of his American castmates presented to him as a culture shock, one that he was neither ready to accept nor adapt to.
However, as the years went by, the X-Men legend realized something had to give, preferably on his end, if he wanted to continue down the road in Hollywood.
