As much as I admire Mr. Raghu Rai and his work, I cannot stop myself from cringing over the poorly written script. The film as a whole would be lovely without the voice over as it is a treat to watch Mr. Rai in the act and speaking. Mr. Rai himself expresses his anger towards the filmmaker (his daughter) in the film, which suggests that the daughter is in her learning stage. The reason why I'm giving this a negative review is because I had a lot of expectations from a fifty five minute long documentary on someone who I have admired as a child, learner, photo artist. The opportunity that Avani Rai had, has been taken very lightly and for granted. A person so close to him could have documented his life, his processes much better. The timeline lacks structure, you don't get the idea of time and date. When did she start documenting? This really gives an idea of how irresponsibly this has been compiled, the voice over seems like an after thought and I cannot emphasise enough on how bad it is. The overly dramatic monotonous voice just spoils the experience. There is an awful amount of emphasis on politics, I get it that it isn't a biopic but Mr. Rai deserves more emphasis if the film is about him.
Can't help but imagine a good documentary film would have made a much better version of this... Could go by picture to picture and story behind it... And if compiled well would have been a better watch
To take a documentary and make you feel for the muse of the subject of the documentary as much as the subject itself isn't a small task. Raghu rai's muse is India. And Avani Rai captures the Essence of not just his story but also of hers. Of India's. And that's the strength of this film. Shot beautifully and simply with an ending frame that does justice to the family gene pool.
