Karis Nemik’s warning in Andor Season 1—“The pace of repression outstrips our ability to understand it”—could apply just as easily to artificial intelligence. Series creator Tony Gilroy seems to think so.
In a recent Collider interview, Gilroy explained why he scrapped releasing Andor Season 1 screenplays, citing AI’s ability to rapidly absorb and replicate creative material. "AI is the reason we're not...I mean, terribly sadly. It’s too much of an X-ray and too easily absorbed," he said, bluntly adding, "Why help the f-cking robots anymore than you can?"

Andy Serkis has discussed his return to Star Wars in the critically acclaimed Andor series, all the while addressing the confusion that he feared would result from him portraying two different characters in the galaxy far, far away. Serkis made his Star Wars debut as Supreme Leader Snoke in 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens, 7 years before he would officially make his return as Kino Loy in Andor season 1. Serkis had one of the most celebrated performances in Andor as Kino Loy, and Serkis has now provided insight as to how that character came to life.
Speaking exclusively to Screen Rant, Serkis first addressed his initial concerns about returning to Star Wars, given how significant his first role was. "People were so confused with Snoke," Serkis insisted, referencing the various theories made about Snoke during the Star Wars sequel trilogy. "Are they going to start thinking that Kino Loy’s some weird cousin of Snoke?...

The 2024 Best Drama Writing Emmy category is the second time in four years that none of the nominees from the prior year are eligible, giving us a whole new slate of programs competing for six slots (out of 134 total submissions on the ballot). All of last year’s nominated shows — “Better Call Saul” (“Point and Shoot” by Gordon Smith and “Saul Gone” by Peter Gould), “Bad Sisters”, “Andor” (“One Way Out” by Beau Willimon), “The Last of Us”, “The White Lotus” (“Arrivederci” by Mike White), and the winner “Succession” (“Connor’s Wedding” by Jesse Armstrong) — are not on this year’s Emmy ballot, as they either concluded or didn’t air any new episodes.
Despite the open category, the submissions reflected in most of our likely contenders played it strategically safe with one or two entries from most shows. The only exception is “Shōgun,” which went for half of its debut season,...

The oldest Star Wars prequel yet, Dawn of the Jedi, has found its screenwriter.
The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Beau Willimon (House of Cards) will co-write the movie with director James Mangold, though an official release date hasn't been confirmed yet. The film marks Willimon's second collaboration on a Star Wars project after Disney+'s Andor, having written the eighth, ninth, and tenth episodes making up season 1's prison arc storyline. This includes the critically acclaimed episode "One Way Out," which received a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing For A Drama Series but ultimately lost the award to Succession.

One of several "Star Wars" movies currently in development at Lucasfilm just took a major step forward. Writer Beau Willimon is now set to co-write director James Mangold's upcoming adventure in a galaxy far, far away. Willimon will pen the script alongside Mangold for what is tentatively titled "Dawn of the Jedi", which was first announced last year during Star Wars Celebration.
The news comes to us from The Hollywood Reporter. Willimon is perhaps best known for creating Netflix's "House of Cards." However, "Star Wars" fans will know him best as one of the writers of "Andor," the much-acclaimed Disney+ series about Cassian Andor. Most notably, he penned the episode "One Way Out," which is widely considered to be one of the best episodes of television in the history of the franchise. Willimon was nominated for an Emmy for his work on the episode. Now, he's getting the chance to tackle a movie.

Beau Willimon is going from House of Cards to House of Jedi.
The playwright and screenwriter has been tapped to work the script for Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi, Lucasfilm’s feature that is to be directed by James Mangold.
Willimon is joining Mangold to write the script for the project that will trace the origins of the Force and be set 25,000 years before any of the timelines and stories told by the movies and shows so far.
Dawn of the Jedi, which is a working title, was first unveiled almost exactly one year ago, at the last Star Wars Celebration, held in London in April 2023.
“When I first started talking to Kathy [Kennedy] about doing one of these pictures, what occurred to me was thinking about what kind of genre of movie within Star Wars I wanted to do,” Mangold said at the time. “And I thought about a biblical epic,...

Luthen's speech in Andor episode 10 encapsulates the true nature of heroism in Star Wars, highlighting the sacrifice of personal futures for the betterment of others. Luthen's speech also reveals the contrasting nature of villains in Star Wars, who prioritize their own gain by robbing others of their future. Luthen's speech demonstrates how redemptions in Star Wars work, with villains sacrificing their own futures to save someone they love and transitioning into heroes in the process.
Andor, Star Wars' best TV show, included one line of outstanding dialogue that encapsulates a franchise theme that has been prevalent since its inception. Since Andor season 1 aired in 2022, many have come to regard it as one of the best-ranked Star Wars TV shows primarily due to its fantastic writing. The scripts of Tony Gilroy, Dan Gilroy, Stephen Schiff, and Beau Willimon combined to allow Andor season 1 to shine, something that bodes well for Andor season 2's story.

May the Force be with… Emmy voters? Disney Plus amassed an impressive 40 Emmy nominations this year (up from 34 last year) thanks to its stable of “Star Wars” saga hits, which accounted for more than half of the mouse house’s total haul of 23 bids — nine for “The Mandalorian,” eight for “Andor,” five for “Obi-Wan Kenobi” and one for docuseries “Light & Magic.”
Although “Mandalorian” nabbed nine bids, the real success story this year is “Andor,” scoring a Best Drama Series nomination for its debut season plus writing and directing bids and five Creative Arts noms. The latest live-action series in the Disney-era “Star Wars” franchise, “Andor” serves as a prequel to “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” (2016) and also by extension to the original Oscar-winning classic “Star Wars” (1977).

It goes without saying that the Emmy nominations emerged at a strange time for Hollywood. Announced July 12, they arrived just a day before SAG-AFTRA announced that the union would be striking. Given the timing, actors, still allowed to do promotional work for their projects, were able to hop on the phone to discuss their nods.
For the writing nominees, the celebration was even more muted given the WGA strike already in its second month. Some, who occupy multiple roles on their projects, were able to comment on their success. In all cases, it was a complicated, emotional moment — the glory of recognition combined with the somber acknowledgment of the ongoing fight around them.
“It’s weird,” Bill Hader told The Hollywood Reporter shortly after the nominations were announced. “It’s like celebrating your birthday, but your parents are getting divorced. We’re trying to make the best out of a bad situation.

Newer theatrical releases arriving on the streamer in June include “TÁR,” “Armageddon Time,” and “M3GAN.”

With its list of new releases for June 2023, Prime is bringing a handful of Amazon Originals and many recent movie hits to the fold.
It’s actually quite a busy month for non-American programming in Amazon Originals department. Shows and movies like Deadloch, My Fault, and Medellín all originate from outside the U.S. and U.K. For the American and British crowd, however, the streamer is debuting two big tentpoles.
The first is I’m a Virgo on June 23. Acclaimed director Boots Riley’s TV followup to Sorry to Bother You will tale the surreal and satirical tale of a giant in Oakland. That will be followed by the more conventional (assumedly) fourth season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan on June 30.

Gilroy and members of the Andor cast were part of a Q&a panel speaking at an FYC Emmy event. During the panel, Gilroy addressed the WGA strike and whether it affected writing for Season 2 of the series, revealing the scripts for the upcoming season were finished before the writers hit the picket line. "Two days ago not because of the strike, but because our thing rhymed with the strike, I finished the last script of the 24. We started three and a half years ago. It'll be five years by the time we're done to finish," he said.

The Almost Famous soundtrack is full of great songs, both beloved rock classics and underappreciated deep cuts. Written and directed by Cameron Crowe, Almost Famous follows young writer William Miller’s escapades on the road with the fictional rock band Stillwater in the 1970s. It’s a semi-autobiographical story drawn from Crowe’s own experiences as a teenage music journalist for Rolling Stone. Since the entire narrative revolves around music, the Almost Famous soundtrack is more important than that of the average movie. It plays like a classic rock and roll playlist. Almost Famous has a few original songs attributed to Stillwater, but the majority of its soundtrack comprises licensed hits.
Almost Famous was widely praised by critics as one of the greatest movies of 2000 and has since become a beloved cult classic. Crowe won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for his Almost Famous script, and his music...

Martin Scorsese's The Departed was a return to form for the director, and it also delivered a memorable soundtrack stuffed with popular music. Released in 2006, the film saw Scorsese shift his sights from New York City to Boston, and it wove a tale of deceit and corruption within that city's police force. Met with universal acclaim from critics (earning 91% on Rotten Tomatoes), the film gave Scorsese his first Best Director Oscar, with the movie itself winning a slew of awards. Like most of Scorsese's best, The Departed's soundtrack was integral to the film's storytelling and gave the viewer an insight into the inner world of the characters.
By showing both sides of the struggle between law and crime, The Departed had a much grander scale than Scorsese's other gangster pictures, and the characters had more richness and emotional depth as well. Scorsese's many needle drops in his movies...

TV shows often become known for the episodes that either begin or end a series, but it would be remiss to overlook some of the great moments that appear between the series premiere and its eventual finale. In particular, episodes that occur either shortly after a premiere or shortly before a finale frequently showcase the very best that a show has to offer. When not having to sell a show to a new audience or wrap up all the loose ends, a TV show can use its established characters to showcase the series' greatest strengths.
A lot more attention ends up being paid to how a show begins and ends, as was the case with the finale of the long-running The Walking Dead. This makes sense to a certain extent, as beginnings and endings are where some of the most important drama takes place and where viewers get to either...
