One of Hollywood’s biggest cheerleaders has been sidelined at this year’s Oscars. Jamie Lee Curtis was snubbed for her performance in The Last Showgirl despite recent Best Supporting Actress nominations at both the SAG Awards and BAFTAs. In 2023, she won this category for her performance in Everything Everywhere All At Once.
Gia Coppola‘s The Last Showgirl stars Pamela Anderson as Shelly Gardner, a 57-year-old Las Vegas showgirl who has performed for three decades in Le Razzle Dazzle. Curtis plays Shelly’s older best friend, Annette, a cocktail waitress who was ousted from the show years prior. Her brief, but impactful performance had launched Curtis into fifth place in our Best Supporting Actress Oscar odds heading into nominations morning.

Warning: This Article Contains Spoilers for Heretic
The main antagonist of Heretic is the devilishly charming Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant). Obsessed with theology and figuring out what is the truth behind all religions, he puts Heretic's leading women, Sister Paxton (Chloe East) and Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher), through the ringer. After inviting the Mormon women into his home, they cannot leave unless they entertain Mr. Reed's religious lectures and tests.
One theory Mr. Reed proposes is that all religions are reiterations of each other, which means they are at the root the same. To prove his point, Mr. Reed makes a few comparisons to other instances of popular media or games that remix their predecessors. One example is the song "Creep" from the band Radiohead, which Mr. Reed sings after revealing to the sisters it was ripped from a 1972 song by The Hollies. He also reveals the legal battles over...

We all thought that we knew Rebecca Hall – English rose, on stage since childhood, daughter of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s founder Sir Peter Hall, regularly described in Hollywood as one of the best actors of her generation. The band truly changed the heavy metal music genre, and Di’Anno sang the bands initial two albums. While he was no longer part of the band, he continued his music endeavors and released several albums over the years.

Did Furiosa’s Poor Box Office Performance Get Another Mad Mad Movie Shelved? (Photo Credit – IMDb)
After a surprisingly bad debut at the box office, George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga might have just ruined the chances of any other Mad Max sequels or prequels. As George Miller wrote Fury Road, he also worked on developing Furiosa and The Wastelands. But given the box office performance of Furiosa, it might have put a halt to the next Mad Max movie.
Forty-five years after George Miller introduced audiences to Mad Max, the auteur may have finally reached the end of the road through the postapocalyptic wasteland unless he can find redemption with his Mad Max films.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the highly regarded director’s film, opened to a poor $32 million domestically over the four-day Memorial Day weekend and $36.5 million internationally. This set back expectations for Mad Max: The Wasteland,...

Exclusive: On the heels of her acclaimed directorial debut Passing, Rebecca Hall has found her next filmmaking vehicle in Four Days Like Sunday, a mother-daughter drama inspired by her own history, which she’s written to direct and will star in for See-Saw Films.
Set in the mid 1990s, the film follows 12-year-old Jane as she begins to rebel against her role as proxy-carer for her mother Sylvia (Hall), a recently divorced and ever so slightly fading Broadway diva. During a long weekend break between concert dates, Sylvia hosts Benton, Chris and Rahim, three male dancers from her current tour, at her anachronistically grand country house. She is also expecting the arrival of Dale, her handsome younger boyfriend. As Jane does her best to protect her mother from everything that threatens to disturb her delicate equilibrium, she moves quietly from childhood into something else-wiser, freer, and more alone.

It’s always fascinating when a movie with a top star, and directed by another star, goes as far under the radar as Steve Buscemi‘s “The Listener,” starring Tessa Thompson, has.
But in the case of this particularly gentle movie — available on VOD now for $6.99 — maybe that’s part of its DNA. Like the mental health helpline operator Thompson plays, this is a movie that’s there if you need it: Quiet, thoughtful, and totally shunning the kind of splashiness that most movies are thought to require these days to stand out.
“The Listener” premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2022, where it was the closing night film of the Venice Days sidebar. On April 13, it was the closing night film of the Sarasota Film Festival, out of competition — in this over 18-month festival journey, it’s also made stops at the festivals in Vienna, Thessaloniki, Stockholm, The Hague,...

The character of Tom Ripley first appeared in Patricia Highsmith's 1955 novel "The Talented Mr. Ripley," a salacious story about a con man who is hired to locate an old school chum named Dickie Greenleaf but who ends up becoming obsessed with him, killing him, and supplanting him. Ripley is not a charming con man, but he is staggeringly clever and possesses a talent for subterfuge. He's also driven by his baser desires, unable to resist pursuing the women and men he lusts after (Ripley is likely bisexual) or stealing the money he so desperately wants. Each time, Ripley gets away with it, as evidenced by the fact that he starred in five novels published through to 1991.
A critic once pointed out that Tom Ripley's character arc is a direct inversion of traditional storytelling. A typical crime novel protagonist will learn new things as the story progresses and then use...

Thompson excels in socially conscious movies, tackling racism and the Black experience with insightful commentary. Her best roles showcase her talent in films like Little Woods and Sylvie's Love, going beyond blockbuster hits. Thompson's performances in movies like Dear White People and Passing confront ignorance and prejudice head-on.
Tessa Thompson first made a name for herself in independent movies, but she soon became one of the most sought after actors in Hollywood. Today, Thompson is perhaps best-known for her roles in the Creed franchise and the MCU. These movies only show a glimpse of her talent, as most of her best work is still in less widespread films, such as Little Woods and Sylvie's Love.

If you were told to guess the highest-selling manga in America in Fall 2023, your answer would most likely be One Piece, Blue Lock, and Jujutsu Kaisen. However, the manga franchise that took the #1 spot in America surprised everyone, and it was none other than Kentaro Miura’s magnum opus Berserk, which outsold Demon Slayer and grabbed the first spot.
Guts in Berserk manga
Although Kentaro Miura is no longer here to guide his beloved story to success, his successor, Kouji Mori, and Studio Gaga paid their respects to him by taking his beloved series to the top of the charts for Fall 2023, beating many prominent names.

Exclusive: Lionsgate has acquired world rights to under-the-radar thriller Amber Alert, which will star Golden Globe nominee Hayden Panettiere (Scream VI). Golden Globe winner Tyler James Williams (Abbott Elementary) co-stars.
In Amber Alert, which is in post-production, an ordinary ride share becomes a high-stakes game of cat and mouse. The story will follow Jaq (Hayden Panettiere) who is eager to get to her first day at a new job, and her driver, Shane (Tyler James Williams), who is just trying to earn a little extra at his side hustle. An alert of a child abduction on their phones will change all that when they discover they are behind a car that matches the description of the kidnapper’s. Unable to let a possible child trafficker escape, they begin a pursuit that will put their own lives at risk.
Kerry Bellessa directs the film which is written by Kerry Bellessa and Joshua Oram.

BAFTA threw up plenty of surprises and snobs in their nominations lineups this year with Best Actress one of the most intriguing and head-scratching categories of the year. “Killers of the Flower Moon” star Lily Gladstone was snubbed while Annette Bening (“Nyad”) also didn’t make the cut. Both of those performers were nominated at the Oscars, however.
Instead, the BAFTA nominees for Best Actress are Fantasia Barrino (“The Color Purple”), Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of a Fall”), Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”), Margot Robbie (“Barbie”), Emma Stone (“Poor Things”), and Vivian Oparah (“Rye Lane”). Stone is the obvious frontrunner and the thespian at the top of our BAFTA odds chart for this category but one name in that list sticks out as a potential challenger: Oparah.
The British actress had a breakout year in 2023 with her role in Searchlight Pictures/Disney’s charming”Rye Lane,” which follows Oparah (Yas) and David Jonsson...

Primetime Emmy nominee Tessa Thompson’s Viva Maude has closed a multiyear first-look film deal with Amazon MGM Studios.
The actress, who has starred in the studio’s movies Creed III and Sylvie’s Love, launched her production company Viva Maude in 2020. The label’s mission is “to influence culture through projects that defy categorization and are manifestly entertaining,” per the press release.
Viva Maude is already in business with Amazon MGM Studios, under its Orion Pictures banner, on Hedda, a reimagination of Henrik Ibsen’s famed 1891 stage play Hedda Gabler, written and directed by Nia DaCosta and starring Thompson. Cameras are currently rolling on the pic.
In 2021, Kishori Rajan, known for her work on Random Acts of Flyness, teamed with Thompson to further expand Viva Maude’s portfolio in production and development, serving as SVP Development & Production. Viva Maude counts a slate of more than 20 movies and TV projects across several genres including narrative,...

Writer and director Amrou Al-Kadhi shares many similarities with the eponymous protagonist of their directorial debut “Layla,” a drama about how a drag queen’s first love influences their sense of self. Al-Kadhi speaks exclusively to Variety ahead of the world premiere of “Layla” Thursday in Sundance Film Festival’s World Cinema Dramatic Competition. (Watch an exclusive clip below.)
Both Al-Kadhi and Layla are British of Arab descent — Al-Kadhi being British-Iraqi and Layla British-Palestinian — and both are non-binary and perform in drag. The director is used to blurring the lines between the personal and the fictional, rooting their drag persona Glamrou in first-hand experience as a queer Arab in Britain and having written award-winning “Unicorn: The Memoir of a Muslim Drag Queen.”
Al-Kadhi emphasizes that, as an artist, it is important to prod into the personal so they can create work that “resonates with people,” but reiterates that “Layla” is a work of fiction.

Soon after “Saltburn” debuted on Amazon Prime, it joined the 1 million watch club on Letterboxd (the leading social media app for film lovers) and was one of the fastest to do so this year. The film has completely taken over social media due to its provocative, erotic sensibilities. “Transfixing and hypnotic, writer/director Emerald Fennell has crafted a provocative and diabolical masterpiece”, writes Awards Daily. Despite being nearly a month since its release, “Saltburn” remains in the top 3 most watched programs on the platform, film or television, in both the UK and US.
“Saltburn” reaped five bids at the Critics’ Choice Awards including Best Picture. Lead Barry Keoghan and scene-stealer Rosamund Pike contended at the Globes. Fennell’s sophomore feature merited 11 longlist mentions at BAFTA.
Among those in the running at BAFTAs is Jacob Elordi for Best Supporting Actor. He plays Felix Catton, an aristocratic who becomes the object of desire for Keoghan’s character,...

It’s almost time again for me to pack my bags and head to Park City, Utah, for the 2024 edition of the Sundance Film Festival. The last few years have been challenging for the fest, with the 2021 and 2022 editions only being online due to the pandemic. The 2023 edition was a hybrid version that sported a few high-profile debuts, including A24’s horror hit Talk to Me, but overall was a bit of a modest year in terms of stuff that broke out. However, 2024 seems to be a high-end year for the fest, with tons of big stars on the way to the festival, including Pedro Pascal, Kristen Stewart (there with two movies), Sebastian Stan, Woody Harrelson and many more.
It’s always interesting to note the trend in storytelling at this famous indie fest. In recent years, the pandemic weighed highly on the fest, with many films acknowledging the toll it took,...
