Book adaptations are tricky business. There's so much expectation and weight behind that more often than not it's advised to try not to get your hopes up. That hasn't stopped any of us from giving into the hype, though, and after seeing the teaser trailer for the upcoming Disney+ series, "Percy Jackson and the Olympians," it's difficult not to feel that hope bubbling up beneath the surface.

We're already on good footing here, though. Rick Riordan, the author of the books, is heavily involved. After his rightful criticisms of the film series, having Riordan's signature on the series should settle fans' fears. Also, they didn't age up the characters this time and, with an eight episode season order, viewers will get more time to spend with Percy and his friends this go-round.

We finally have more details about the upcoming “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” series at Disney+. According to author and executive producer Rick Riordan, the plan is to tackle one book per season.

Bekerman, Yurkovich and Ordanis will serve as partners and producers in the new venture, which will oversee film and television projects, supporting them from inception through distribution and packaging with the Good Question Media development fund.

“The Amber Ruffin Show” received a nomination for outstanding variety series writing at the 2021 Emmy awards. The series is produced by Universal Television and Sethmaker Shoemeyers Productions, and Ruffin executive produces alongside Jenny Hagel, Seth Meyers and Mike Shoemaker.

Percy Jackson is officially coming to television.

Disney+ has handed a series order to Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

It comes from Rick Riordan, who wrote the original book series, which has more than 180M copies, and Jon Steinberg, the co-creator of FX on Hulu’s upcoming series The Old Man. The pair will write the pilot with James Bobin, director of The Mysterious Benedict Society, directing. The trio will also exec produce.

Production is set to start this summer with casting currently underway.

The “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” series has officially been picked up at Disney Plus, Variety has learned.

The series adaptation of the Rick Riordan book series was first reported as being in the works at the streamer back in May 2020. Casting is currently underway on the series. Riordan announced the series pick up in a video message, which can be viewed below.

Riordan and Jon Steinberg will write the pilot with James Bobin directing. Steinberg is currently under an overall deal with Disney’s 20th Television, while Bobin recently directed and executive produced Disney Plus’ “Mysterious Benedict Society” series and the film “Dora and the Lost City of Gold.”

Exclusive: Dolphin Entertainment CEO and founder Bill O’Dowd said Tuesday that visual designer Anthony Francisco is joining the the company as creative director.

Francisco’s last position was at Marvel Studios, where he was Senior Visual Development Artist — a post he held for nine years. His design work includes famed MCU characters and elements like Baby Groot, Loki and the Dora Milaje (the female warriors of Black Panther). Francisco’s designs, concepts and creations will also be featured in Eternals, Black Panther 2, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Captain Marvel 2.

Fans of Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson novels received another promising update from the character's creator, as he shared some news about his latest meeting with Disney execs about his potential Percy Jackson and The Olympians series to be shown on Disney+. The author apparently met up with execs from Disney Entertainment, Disney TV, 20th Century Studios and Disney+ to discuss getting the ball rolling on the reboot of the Percy Jackson series, following two so-so movie adaptations of his young adult novels.

Rick Riordan posted in a lengthy update, "We had a very positive conversation yesterday with the top executives at the various branches of the Disney television organization: Disney Entertainment, Disney TV, 20th Century Studios, and Disney+. This was the first time all of us had been in the same room so we could make sure we were all getting the same information and sharing the same goals.

Los Angeles-based sales agency Motion Picture Exchange (Mpx) has hired veteran sales agent Marcy Rubin as VP of international sales on the eve of the virtual Cannes market.

Rubin will oversee Mpx’s slate of documentary and completed films including Alexander Sharp’s newly acquired horror thriller Wired Shut; road trip dramady Hudson directed by Sean D. Cunningham; female-led thriller Student Body; and documentary All In My Power, a first-hand account of healthcare workers’ response to Covid during the initial weeks of the pandemic in Manhattan.

Motion Picture Exchange has acquired worldwide sales rights on the coming-of-age horror film “Student Body,” and will be launching it out of the Cannes Virtual Market next week.

Written and directed by Lee Ann Kurr in her feature debut, the film features Montse Hernandez, Cheyenne Haynes (“Camping”), Harley Quinn Smith, Austin Zajur (“Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark”), Anthony Keyvan, and Christian Camargo. “Student Body” is produced by the breakout, all female creative team of Rachel Liu, Sandra Leviton and Kurr.

Author Rick Riordan has provided an update recently to his blog, highlighting a recent trip he took to Los Angeles to continue moving forward with the series. Riordan announced last Spring that he would be producing an adaptation of his beloved YA series involving demigods and mythical creatures. Now, it seems like everything may be coming together.

"So where are we? Well, if I haven't been giving you updates as frequently as you'd like, that's just because there is really nothing new I can announce yet. We continue to work behind the scenes, however, on many fronts at once, and everything is still moving forward. The big piece we are concentrating on now is finding the perfect director to join our team."

The Matrix 4 adds another big name to its impressive cast, as Christina Ricci has reportedly boarded the sequel's production. The former child star famous for playing Wednesday Addams in The Addams Family has been quietly cast for the project according to an updated press kit released by Warner Bros. No information has been offered about the role she'll be playing, but as someone with many fans, Ricci's casting can only increase the anticipation people have for the untitled sequel.

Roku and Saban Films have struck a deal in which select films from Saban’s 2021 slate will stream on the Roku Channel within three months after its theatrical run.

The films will stream for free on Roku’s ad-supported Roku Channel, and not only is it yet another shift in the windows for theatrical films, it’s also the first pay-one licensing agreement for Roku. And the titles will be available in the U.S. and Canada after a theatrical run and a home entertainment release.

The first film to premiere under the agreement will be “Echo Boomers,” which stars Patrick Schwarzenegger and Michael Shannon and will release on June 15. Other titles included are “Happily” with Joel McHale, “Percy Vs Goliath” (US only) with Christopher Walken, Christina Ricci and Zach Braff and “Under the Stadium Lights” with Laurence Fishburne. More titles will be announced at a later date.

Roku, in its latest bid to pack more exclusive content into The Roku Channel, landed a deal with Saban Films giving the streaming platform pay-one window streaming rights to a select batch of movies from the boutique film acquisition and distribution company’s current slate.

It’s the first pay-one licensing agreement for Roku, making The Roku Channel the exclusive North American streaming home for some Saban movies about three months after they premiere in theaters. Roku has a 24-month exclusive streaming window on the films.

The deal covers fewer than a dozen titles from Saban Films, representing about one-third of the company’s 2021 film slate.
