There is certainly a generation of younger viewers that grew up recognizing Adam Brody as one of the signature romantic leads of his era, as The O.C. catapulted him to significant fame early in his career. Although Brody has redefined himself with ambitious roles in The Kid Detective and American Fiction, its easy to tie him to the romantic genre. While his charisma hasnt faded, hes aged out of those endearing coming-of-age stories. That career shift isnt exactly a drawback as his most emotionally overwhelming performance in the miniseries Fleishman Is in Trouble, which shows how difficult it is to face a mid-life crisis of confidence.

The trailer for Nobody Wants This shows teen drama icons Kristen Bell and Adam Brody falling in love, offering an extended preview of the upcoming Netflix romantic comedy. Although they are well-known for their respective roles as Veronica Mars and The O.C.'s breakout character Seth Cohen, both Bell and Brody have distinguished themselves in a variety of roles in recent years. Bell led the twisty comedy The Good Place, while also starring in a number of comedies on the big screen. Brody has tended to favor darker characters in acclaimed films such as The Kid Detective and Ready or Not.
Bell and Brody, who have worked together in the past, are reuniting for the Netflix romcom series Nobody Wants This, which premieres on September 26, and consists of ten episodes.

Adam Brody will always be known as Seth Cohen from The O.C. At the time of that shows main run, there was a lot of buzz about his future career and talk about how he would be the next big thing. Despite some very interesting roles, that next big thing promise never came to fruition. 2020s The Kid Detective is the prime example of why this is a travesty.

“Choices, choices…,” says the narrator, a young seamstress, in this strange and striking debut from Freddy Macdonald. A neo-noir in the early Coens tradition, Sew Torn also features a bold tri-part structure in which the heroine, Barbara (Eve Connolly) — like Lola before her in Tom Tykwer’s Run Lola Run — gets three standalone chances to pursue a different destiny after stumbling on the bloody aftermath of a drug deal gone wrong on a quiet country road.
It begins with image of a reel of red cotton, a briefcase and a dead body. This is Barbara, who wonders what we’ll make of her story. Macdonald’s film then loops back to explain who Barbara got here, a tale of chance and coincidence that reshuffles its characters in a way that always surprises,...

But he falls for her, too... The film stars Matt Rife as Mort Madison, with Clare Grant, Elliot, Denzel Whitaker, Lexy Panterra, Charles Worth, Erik Griffin, Eugenia Kuzmina, & Eric Roberts. Can it really be 20 years since “The O.C.” premiered on Fox? The young actors of the series, Benjamin McKenzie, Adam Brody, Mischa Barton and Rachel Bilson quickly became in-demand stars and the theme song “California” by Phantom Planet became a top ten hit in several countries while also reaching 35 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart.
The bagel-centric series also introduced us to “Chrismukkah” and showcased bands from The Killers to Modest Mouse.
Several members of the cast went on to lead their own series and films and others have popped up on hit shows from “How I Met Your Mother” to “Grey’s Anatomy.” Here’s what they’ve been up to since “The O.C.” signed off in February 2007.

Benjamin McKenzie, who played O.C. newbie Ryan Atwood, went on to star as an LA cop on TNT’s “Southland” and as James Gordon on Fox’s Batman prequel series “Gotham.

It's been 20 years since "The O.C." debuted on Fox, but it's still hard to see past Seth Cohen when Adam Brody shows up in a movie or TV show. It shouldn't be, because he's a terrific actor, but there's something about his still-fresh-faced persona that immediately harkens back to his time as America's favorite nerd-turned-awkwardly-popular-kid on the millennials' slightly savvier version of "Beverly Hills 90210."
Recently, Brody took his typecasting head-on with Evan Morgan's "The Kid Detective," an underrated and frustratingly underseen comedy about an Encyclopedia Brown-type wunderkind who's grown up to be a hard-drinking-and-drugging failure of a detective. His character has never made good on his early promise, but suddenly a murder case falls in his lap, and he has the opportunity to break free of his boy-wonder shackles.

Warning: The following contains Spoilers from Yellowjackets season 2.
Showtime’s genre-blending TV series Yellowjackets features a big cast of characters and can become confusing owing to different actors playing the same roles — here is the Yellowjackets cast and character guide. Yellowjackets has two distinct timelines as it examines the lives of its characters in 2021, while also showing flashbacks to events from 1996. Obviously, this means that several of the key characters have both teenage actors and adult actors dependent on the time period. Yellowjackets centers on a 1996 tragedy when a plane carrying a high school soccer team crashes in the wilderness (drawing parallels to the real-life Andes flight disaster plane crash).
The Yellowjackets team was lost for 19 months, and in that time, have formed cannibalistic tribes as a way to survive while paying homage to "the wilderness" entity. The survivors swore to secrecy over what really happened, but now in 2021, the wilderness has come back.

Adam Brody has talked at length about the one that got away, and with a Flash-led movie on the verge of release, one can only wonder how things would’ve ended up had Brody’s Barry Allen made it to the big screen in George Miller’s Justice League: Mortal. The epic superhero tale fell apart in early 2007 due to the impending writers’ strike and the loss of an Australian tax credit, and it continues to be one of Hollywood’s ultimate “what if?” stories.
So, when David F. Sandberg’s Shazam! made its way to the big screen in 2019, one of the most rewarding aspects of the film was Brody’s surprise cameo as the super-powered alter ego of Jack Dylan Grazer’s Freddy Freeman. It was not only perfect casting by virtue of the two actors’ similar wit, but it also allowed for a Justice League: Mortal reunion between Brody and D.J. Cotrona,...

The Oc star Adam Brody shares his thoughts on the teen drama after revisiting it for the first time in 20 years. With his portrayal of the talkative comic book nerd Seth Cohen, Brody made a case for himself as one of the more influential and unmistakable television characters in recent television history. Although the character type of the chatty best friend wasn't new by the time The Oc tried it, Brody made it his own.
In an interview with GQ UK, while promoting his roles in Fleishman Is in Trouble and Shazam! Fury of the Gods, Brody was asked about his time on The Oc and the broader trend of rewatch podcasts. The actor reveals that he's been rewatching The Oc, at the request of series creator Josh Schwartz and other friends who have been recommending it. But even though their whodunits were small-scale, they were still pretty damn magical. On VOD, Universal’s “Nobody” and the debut of the latest Liam Neeson action film, “The Marksman,” topped the charts along with “Nomadland.” The Bob Odenkirk thriller “Nobody” has been overall the top performer for its initial three weeks of $19.99 home play (with the studio collecting $16 for each rental). It is the sole title to make all four charts, placing #1 at GooglePlay and Spectrum, second and fifth at Fandango and Apple TV. Two million rentals would mean $32 million in studio rentals.
For “The Marksman,” Open Road held to the pre-pandemic 75 day window, grossing a little under $16 million in domestic theaters, before going PVOD. It took #1 at FandangoNow, #2 at Apple TV, and #3 at GooglePlay.

Adam Brody burst onto the scene, and subsequently rose to prominence, when playing Seth in hit TV series The O.C. While many may still know him primarily for that role, the talented actor is experiencing something of a good run of form of late, with appearances in the hugely entertaining Shazam! and the Oscar-nominated Promising Young Woman.
To add to that list is the brilliant, dark new comedy The Kid Detective, and we had the pleasure of speaking to him about this character, and the intriguing tonality of Evan Morgan’s film. We discuss what it was like to break into the industry at a young age and whether he can relate his character in the film with own past experiences. He speaks briefly on the forthcoming sequel to Shazam! and also tells us what it was like to work alongside Carey Mulligan in Promising Young Woman.

The earliest cinematic detective is said to be 1900’s Sherlock Holmes Baffled, a minute-long case in which Conan-Doyle’s perrennial is up against a disappearing robber. You can see the short film here, and brief though it is – this is where it all began.
In the one and a fifth centuries since, cinema has seen its fair share of celluloid sleuths. It is an evergreen concept, one which can adapt to many genres. Today sees the release of Adam Brody’s The Kid Detective, a wonderful comedy noir in which a once-celebrated young detective is hired for his first case as an adult by a desperate woman hoping to solve a mystifying crime. Brody is great in the film, and we had the chance to sit down with the actor to talk about the film.

Slated to open in theaters right when the pandemic lockdowns started, and subsequently lost in the 2020 shuffle, Cannes award-winner “The Climb” (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment) is a smart comedy you might have missed. Co-writers Michael Angelo Covino (who also directed) and Kyle Marvin star as lifelong friends Mike and Kyle who may, as it turns out, be dragging each other down. A playful and occasionally ouch-y spin on the buddy comedy, this film may well be a calling card for two up-and-coming comic talents.

When the 25th James Bond movie moved from its release in November and prompted Cineworld to announce the “temporary suspension” of over 600 locations in the U.S. and the U.K., it begged the question, just which films are still slated to open in theaters in 2020?
Honestly, not a ton, and the goalposts are moving so quickly that TheWrap just reported the sci-fi epic “Dune” from Warner Bros. would also no longer open on December 18 as planned.
Update 11/6: “Death on the Nile,” “Free Guy” and “The Comeback Trail” removed
We’ve already seen plenty of movies jump ship from 2020, with films like “Black Widow,” “Top Gun: Maverick,” “West Side Story” and more pushing back by a few more months to summer 2021 or beyond. But we already played this game earlier this year, and already delayed movies like “Wonder Woman 1984...

Sony Pictures saw an 18% drop in second quarter profits to $299M from July-September versus the same period in 2019. However, the figures rep an increase on the first quarter’s $230M which ended June 30 this year. Revenues across the division were off by $615M compared to last year while theatrical sales dropped to $13M versus $715M in Q2 2019, clearly affected by the coronavirus pandemic.
A key portion of the domestic market is still closed while there are lingering restrictions on cinemas and the threat of renewed lockdowns in Europe. In 2019, Sony’s Q2 earnings were largely attributable to the summer success of Marvel sequel Spider-Man: Far From Home and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.

Sony is merging its theatrical, home entertainment and TV distribution marketing operations under the co-oversee of Josh Greenstein, the studio’s Motion Picture Group President, and Keith Le Goy, the studio’s Networks and Distribution President.
The move comes at time for the Culver City, CA studio as it responds to viewers’ changing viewing habits during the pandemic, and the need to respond to emerging release patterns by harnessing Sony’s collective expertise in marketing a title through its entire lifecycle, across all platforms.
Due to the combining of departments, we hear that roughly 35 staffers were cut in distribution and marketing. While studio brass have been considering this type of restructuring for some time, the pandemic further hastened that decision.
Stateside, all theatrical, home entertainment and television distribution marketing divisions will be brought together, while there will be a regional model for those businesses abroad.

Of the titles debuting in the specialty box office space this weekend, Well Go USA’s Synchronic had a decent showing, opening in 326 theaters to the tune of an estimated $225,070, averaging $690 per theater for its opening weekend.
Set in New Orleans, Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s sci-fi pic follows two best friends Steve (Anthony Mackie) and Dennis (Jamie Dornan). Both paramedics, they pair answer the call to a series of accidents that are bizarre as they are gruesome. They think it’s all because of a new party drug, but when Dennis’ oldest daughter suddenly disappears, it goes beyond that. Steve stumbles upon a terrifying truth about the supposed psychedelic that will challenge everything he knows about reality — and the flow of time itself.

Eight months ago, before the Covid-19 pandemic hobbled the movie business, every weekend felt like a heavyweight fight. Nowadays, each weekend is beginning to feel more like pillow fight. Still, in what turned out to be another soft weekend at the box office, Liam Neeson’s latest action thriller, Honest Thief, pulled in $3.7 million at the domestic box office and claimed the title of the No. 1 movie in North America.
The new high-octane thriller from Open Road Films starring the ageless action star as a double-crossed bank robber with a conscience had a $1,525 per-screen average in 2,425 theaters. It added another $1.3 million abroad, helping to bring its one-week worldwide total to $5.5 million.
Although the PG-13-rated film’s debut paled next to the bows of such recent Neeson macho-fests as 2019’s Cold Pursuit ($11 million opening) and 2018’s The Commuter ($13.7 million opening), the film’s freshman frame was muscular enough to unseat last week’s champion,...

The specialty box office was fairly quiet this weekend with The Kid Detective being the new theatrical release posting numbers. The Stage 6 Films comedy starring Adam Brody and Sophie Nélisse banked an estimated $135,000 on its opening weekend.
The movie debuted in 865 theaters and took in $45,000 on Friday, $57,000 on Saturday and is projected to earn are $33,000 on Sunday.
Written and directed by Evan Morgan, the movie is about exactly what the title suggests: a kid detective. Brody plays a once-celebrated kid detective who is now 31 and isn’t exactly bathing in fame. However, he continues to solve the same trivial mysteries as he navigates his hangovers and wades in puddles of self-pity. All of this changes when a naïve client brings him his first “adult” case in which he attempts to find out who brutally murdered her boyfriend.

Adam Brody is a natural when it comes to comedy, and the same can be said with his latest film, The Kid Detective, which was released on Oct. 16. Though slightly darker than his previous comedic roles like Gilmore Girls and In the Land of Women, his character Abe is still just as intriguing. The film - which was written and directed by Evan Morgan - follows Brody as a former kid detective who is still solving minor cases around his small town as an adult - that is, until a teenager named Caroline approaches him with his first adult case to figure out who murdered her boyfriend.

The sheer range of genres represented by this week’s new releases — from Liam Neeson thriller “Honest Thief” to romantic weepie “2 Hearts” — suggests that distributors of all kinds are doing their best to give audiences the kind of selection they enjoyed before the lockdown.
Well, nearly all kinds of distributors.
The major studios are still playing it safe and holding their tentpoles for a time when they can pack the megaplexes, although Paramount has stepped in with a fun post-apocalyptic adventure, “Love and Monsters,” which goes straight to PVOD, and Sony picked up an unconventional neo-noir called “The Kid Detective” out of the Toronto Film Festival that sneaks into theaters today. Pre-Halloween horror offerings continue, as Amazon Prime releases two more titles in its Welcome to the Blumhouse series: “Evil Eye” and “Nocturne.”
Art-houses land a major title in 2019 Venice Film Festival winner “Martin Eden,” an Italian adaptation of the Jack London novel.

A movie that keeps revealing itself to be a little bit odder, a little bit better than you thought it was two minutes ago, Evan Morgan’s The Kid Detective is either a lucky accident or a balancing act more graceful than a first-time writer/director should expect to pull off.
The tale of a 32 year-old failure (Adam Brody) who was once his town’s most celebrated child, it spends much of its time looking, with some humor but little mockery, at how it feels to fail to live up to one’s potential. But it’s also the mystery yarn ...

There are certain films that you just know are Canadian after five minutes — they’re milder, softer, more congenial and eager to please than their south-of-the-border counterparts would be — and that’s what makes The Kid Detective, despite its twisty ending, such a mild piece of cheese.
The film premiered — where else? — at this year’s shaved-down Toronto Film Festival.
To its credit, Evan Morgan’s feature directorial debut isn’t exactly what its title makes you imagine it might be, a tale about a pre-pubescent Sherlock Holmes running around solving inscrutable mysteries in his placid but actually corrupt hometown. “I used to wonder if I was the smartest person in the world,” Abe Applebaum confesses wearily as he looks back on his golden years as a precocious crime buster, during which he allegedly solved more than 200 cases. However, his career was thwarted when he couldn’t solve the mystery...

Don’t be fooled by the cheery ring of the Disney-esque title “The Kid Detective.” Severely misrepresenting the mature essence of writer and first-time director Evan Morgan’s smart crime caper, this innocent-sounding name might just be the result of poor creative judgment. Then again, it might also be purposely designed to pull the rug out from under the viewer, much as Morgan’s ambitious genre exercise often does to satisfying effect.
In short, you won’t find something as young-skewing as “Harriet the Spy” or “Encyclopedia Brown” here, as “The Kid Detective” has much darker ambitions in store. Splendidly summoning film noir-esque vibes, classically ghastly bad guys and femme fatale types out of a whimsical small town full of grotesque mysteries, this bold and often surprisingly humorous film — think of it as a more mainstream version of Rian Johnson’s “Brick” — grapples with themes related to murder and abuse,...

The Kid Detective is a noir crime drama with a fascinating protagonist and an absolutely mind-blowing climax. What begins as a story about a washed-up investigator in a small town takes a dark turn with several stunning reveals. The plot builds tension with a slow boil. There are points in the film where you wonder what the heck is actually going on. But the downbeats are skillfully placed. Setting up vital clues for a final act bombshell that will leave audiences reeling.
The Kid Detective takes place in the seemingly sleepy suburban town of Willowbrook. Adam Brody stars as Abe Applebaum, a private investigator in a serious life rut. He drinks heavily, does copious amounts of narcotics, and is oblivious to the day of the week. His parents worry as his life spirals out of control. While it wasn’t part of the official TIFF lineup, the new dramedy The Kid Detective screened in a sidebar section for press and industry, and now, only a month later, it’s already getting a release. Directed by Evan Morgan (The Dirties), the film follows Adam Brody as a once-famous childhood detective that is now far past his prime. Also starring Sophie Nélisse, her character presents him with a new case, and thus an adventure begins. Now set for a theatrical release this Friday, the first trailer and poster have arrived.
Jared Mobarak said in his review, “It’s a good role for Brody by simultaneously feeding on the typecast nature of him being neurotic Seth Cohen from The O.C. and rejecting it by toning down the sarcasm and replacing it with fatigue. Abe is beat down and defeated—making Nélisse the perfect foil to remind him about the preciousness of life.

Abe Applebaum used to be loved. Back when he was a kid detective — think Encyclopedia Brown, Nancy Drew, and the Hardy Boys, with a generous dose of street smarts to boot — Abe was the star of his small town, a whiz kid with charm and pluck and all the other good stuff necessary to solve relatively benign crimes. Someone stole the school fundraising cash? Abe will find out who did it! Worried about the light vandalism plaguing picture perfect downtown? Abe’s your guy! But what happens when a kid detective grows up?
Such is the clever conceit of Evan Morgan’s feature directorial debut, “The Kid Detective,” which picks up decades after Abe’s fledgling career was felled by a truly heinous crime. Oh, Abe is still a detective — he’s even got the same office, just with the “kid” scratched off the old-school frosted glass door, he’s...

Abe Applebaum used to be a big shot. Or, at least, as big of a big shot as a kid detective could be. When he was younger, he set up his own mini-detective agency and solved mini-mysteries, to much acclaim. Now, however, he’s a bored, sad-sack adult, pining for his days of youthful glory. He’s […]

"Someone's following us." "This isn't safe." Sony Pictures has released an official trailer for an indie dark comedy titled The Kid Detective, marking the feature debut of Canadian filmmaker Evan Morgan. A once-celebrated kid detective, now 32, continues to solve the same trivial mysteries between hangovers and bout of self-pity. Until a naïve client brings him his first "adult" case - to figure out who brutally murdered her boyfriend. This just premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, and is out in theaters already later this week. Adam Brody stars as Abe, with Sophie Nélisse, Tzi Ma, Wendy Crewson, and Sarah Sutherland. This reminds me a bit of Derrick Comedy's Mystery Team film from over a decade ago, also about some "kid detectives" who get in over-their-heads. I just hope this is funnier than the trailer? Because it's a bit bland. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Evan Morgan's The Kid Detective,...

Feeling something like a broader Brick or an indier Mystery Team, the trailer for The Kid Detective absolutely works for me. Writer/director Evan Morgan (The Dirties) seems to have struck quite the engaging, unique tone, blending the genuine stakes of a murder case with the self-effacing charms of an indie comedy. Sony Pictures has moved Milla Jovovich’s fantasy thriller “Monster Hunter” forward by four months from April 23, 2021, to Dec. 30 of this year.
The studio announced the shift late Monday afternoon. It’s the latest in a long line of major studio movies to be shuffled amid uncertainty over when most North American movie theaters will re-open, although most of the moves have been delays such as the James Bond movie “No Time to Die” going back five months from Nov. 20 to April 2, 2021.

The premise behind Evan Morgan’s The Kid Detective definitely hit upon my nostalgia as a big fan of the HBO Encyclopedia Brown series when I was a kid. You do wonder what might happen to someone like that as they grow older. Do they become cynical? Depressed? Do they become actual private detectives or go into the police force? A real-world Encyclopedia Brown would have to face the reality that what they thought they were doing was never actually what it was. Being the cute kid to whom the mayor gives a key to the city and the town pitches in to rent office space isn’t the same as being a qualified law enforcement official citizens can rely on. Public celebrity doesn’t garner public trust.
