The Dominican Republic’s Jose Maria Cabral, best known for his reality-grounded prison drama “Woodpeckers” (“Carpinteros”), has ventured into documentary filmmaking for the fourth time with his bracing portrait of Santo Domingo’s titular “42nd Street” (“La 42”). He debuts its trailer exclusively in Variety ahead of its SXSW world premiere on March 7.
It is here on 42nd Street of the infamous Capotillo neighborhood where the cacophony of music, art and dance clash with local police who sweep into the area, two to a motorbike, and arrest people willy-nilly, many times for simply dancing late at night.
“When we think of La 42, yes, we know there is crime, we know there is drug trafficking, but that’s not the only reality. There are many good people there, many artistic, creative and talented individuals who just want to move forward,” says Cabral.

There was a lot of good TV in 2024. It was an unusual year overall, the product of a post-strike Hollywood in the midst of a feverish industry-wide evolution from streaming to the cineplex, but plenty of great series still flowed throughout the year. Horror TV was no different: a slowdown in output didn’t mean a slowdown in quality, and there were a handful of outstanding horror shows in 2024 — a couple of them easily among the best shows of the year overall, and sadly, a couple of them also bowing out for their final seasons.
Here are our picks for the best of the best horror TV shows of 2024.
“Interview With the Vampire” Season 2 (AMC) ‘Interview With the Vampire’
“Interview With the Vampire’s” second season was some of the best television of the year, full stop, and definitely the best horror show of 2024. Jacob Anderson and Sam Reid continue...

Horror anthologies have always been a popular subgenre, with TV shows especially letting creators use their platforms to tell different stories that each have a unique style of petrifying audiences. One of the newest additions to this category is Them: The Scare, created by Little Marvin on Prime Video and continuing the themes of racism and supernatural terror he began exploring in 2021's Them: Covenant. This series has joined other television powerhouses in becoming a fantastic horror anthology, but its first few episodes make it clear: this is unlike anything audiences have ever seen.

Dominic Orlando gets a special mention in the season 2 premiere of Amazon Prime's horror series Them, and for good reason. Them is a haunted house anthology show created for the streaming service, that first premiered in April 2021, with the subtitle, Them: Covenant. The second season, Them: The Scare, premiered a few years later in April 2024. Both seasons focus on Black families put into horrifying supernatural and sometimes disturbingly real situations. Created by Little Marvin, the series has earned mixed reviews across its seasons.
The first season of the show only has a 58% on Rotten Tomatoes but the second season has a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Them: The Scare has the honor of opening with a dedication to Dominic Orlando, a writer for the series. Dolores Catania reveals Rhonj cast ‘wanted’ a traditional reunion, says they were ready for ‘combat’
The Real Housewives of New Jersey Season 14 is getting a watch party instead of a traditional reunion.
It turns out that the decision wasn’t what the Rhonj cast wanted, even amid the divide.
When Andy Cohen announced a traditional reunion was a no-go, many The Real Housewives of New Jersey fans assumed it was because the cast couldn’t be in the same room.
Dolores Catania recently spoke out on the hot topic as she hyped the Off the Rails special.
The alternate reunion features the cast in two rooms back at Rails Steakhouse watching the finale.
However, the cast wanted a sit-down and face-off, just like in past years.

The Black-Hat Man's origin in Them: Covenant involves Hiram Epps, a man of faith, who makes a deal with a demonic presence after experiencing a tragic loss. The Black-Hat Man's purpose is to break the Emory family, reflecting the systemic racism and bigotry of their living neighbors. Da Tap Dance Man's origin story is full of inconsistencies, and his true nature remains unclear, but he seems to be a manifestation of the rage caused by systemic racism.

People don’t talk enough about how deeply human it is,” admits Little Marvin, creator of “Them: The Scare.” In our recent webchat he adds, “I love to see characters that are emotionally complex and that test my allegiances. When I’m already invested in the character and you give me something so unnatural, I’m 1000% in.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“Them: The Scare” is the second installment of Amazon Prime Video’s horror anthology series created by Little Marvin. Set in Los Angeles County circa 1991, LAPD Detective Dawn (Deborah Ayorinde) is assigned to a gruesome murder. Luke James plays Edmund, an aspiring actor who appears sensitive but harbors a dark void. Marvin explains, “I endeavored to make something that showed the duality in people. I wanted Edmund to engender a certain level of empathy. If you are terrified by the decisions he...

Dakota Johnson is asking herself what we all have at one time or another: “Am I Ok?”
Johnson stars in the simply titled feature that premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. Tig Notaro co-directs with her wife and fellow comedian Stephanie Allynne from a semi-autobiographical script written by Lauren Pomerantz.
Johnson stars as 30something Lucy who realizes she is a lesbian just as her best friend Jane (Sonoya Mizuno) announces she’s moving from Los Angeles to London for work. As Lucy’s life is upended, she’s suddenly floating through a queer dating pool without the life raft of Jane.
Jermaine Fowler, Kiersey Clemons, Molly Gordon, and Sean Hayes also star, along with co-director Notaro.
Screenwriter Pomerantz told Entertainment Weekly that “Am I Ok?” began as a “friendship movie” centered on her actual best friend Jessica Elbaum, who serves as a producer on the film. However, the feature became a coming-out dramedy instead.

Them: The Scare is a top horror anthology series with a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, offering a refreshing alternative to American Horror Story. Them: The Scare's intricate themes, including systemic racism, set it apart from AHS's recent disappointments and bring a gripping psychological horror experience. LAPD Detective Dawn Reeve unravels a sinister murder in Them: The Scare, starring Deborah Ayorinde, boosting its popularity on Amazon Prime Video.
A returning horror show with a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score is a great American Horror Story replacement. Since premiering its very first season back in 2012, American Horror Story has maintained its status as one of the longest-running horror anthology series currently on television. While some seasons of American Horror Story are certainly better than others, American Horror Story: Delicate, the series' twelfth and most recent season, was rated as one of the worst in the entire franchise.

Them's first season -- entitled Them: Covenant -- was conceived and marketed as Amazon Prime's answer to the highly successful horror anthology franchise American Horror Story. Its key selling point was its pronounced and overt socio-political and racially-charged edge Them was clearly one of the new-age horror stories inspired by Jordan Peele's socially-aware brand of horror movies, most notably Get Out. The first season told the gruesome tale of the Black Emory family moving from South Carolina to a White neighborhood in Los Angeles during the 50s. Specifically, during the height of the historical Second Great Migration in a pre-Civil Rights world. Violence, intrigue, torment, torture, racism and death ensued with mixed results.
Three years later, Them returned with a new season and story. Now set in Los Angeles in 1991, Them: The Scare centers around Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) homicide detective Dawn Reeve -- played with triumphant aplomb...

When Jordan Peele first released his debut feature film, Get Out, starring Daniel Kaluuya, about a black man who thinks he is going to meet his white girlfriend’s parents and instead uncovers a disturbing townwide conspiracy, he had no idea the cultural firestorm it would unleash. Since then, several socially conscious horror films and TV shows have flooded the big and small screen, including Amazon Prime’s Them. The series was released in 2021 and set in 1953 during the Second Great Migration. Them: Covenant follows a black family who moves from North Carolina to an all-white Los Angeles neighborhood and is promptly confronted with both real and otherworldly threats to their lives. Finally, three years later, the series returns with an entirely new story.
