The Dominican Republic’s Jose Maria Cabral, best known for his reality-grounded prison drama “Woodpeckers” (“Carpinteros”), has ventured into documentary filmmaking for the fourth time with his bracing portrait of Santo Domingo’s titular “42nd Street” (“La 42”). He debuts its trailer exclusively in Variety ahead of its SXSW world premiere on March 7.

It is here on 42nd Street of the infamous Capotillo neighborhood where the cacophony of music, art and dance clash with local police who sweep into the area, two to a motorbike, and arrest people willy-nilly, many times for simply dancing late at night.

There was a lot of good TV in 2024. It was an unusual year overall, the product of a post-strike Hollywood in the midst of a feverish industry-wide evolution from streaming to the cineplex, but plenty of great series still flowed throughout the year. Horror TV was no different: a slowdown in output didn’t mean a slowdown in quality, and there were a handful of outstanding horror shows in 2024 — a couple of them easily among the best shows of the year overall, and sadly, a couple of them also bowing out for their final seasons.

Horror anthologies have always been a popular subgenre, with TV shows especially letting creators use their platforms to tell different stories that each have a unique style of petrifying audiences. One of the newest additions to this category is Them: The Scare, created by Little Marvin on Prime Video and continuing the themes of racism and supernatural terror he began exploring in 2021's Them: Covenant. This series has joined other television powerhouses in becoming a fantastic horror anthology, but its first few episodes make it clear: this is unlike anything audiences have ever seen.

Dominic Orlando gets a special mention in the season 2 premiere of Amazon Prime's horror series Them, and for good reason. Them is a haunted house anthology show created for the streaming service, that first premiered in April 2021, with the subtitle, Them: Covenant. Journalist and talk show host Tamron Hall is officially in the writing process for the TV adaptation of her mystery crime-thriller series, “As the Wicked Watch.” The books follow a reporter as she tries to crack the case behind the mysterious deaths of two young Black women who were murdered by a serial killer in Chicago.

“It is off and running. I wish I could tell you more, but wow. I am blown away by where we are,” Hall told TheWrap, adding that she’s also building out her writers’ room. “We’re working on an epic partnership with a writer who is just phenomenal … you will know the writer’s work.”

The “Tamron Hall” star explained that the most important attribute for someone joining her creative team is to thoroughly understand the series’ lead character Jordan Manning, as well as the crime genre in general.

The second season of Prime Video's horror anthology series, Them, drops on April 25, 2024, and while the first season was dubbed Covenant, this time around it's being billed as Them: The Scare, and takes viewers from the 1953 setting of the first season, all the way to 1991 Los Angeles after the release of the Rodney King video when racial tensions are at their peak. It sees the return of Deborah Ayorinde in the lead role, only this time, instead of playing a homemaker, she finds herself acting as an LAPD Detective investigating a string of bizarre murders.

Joining Ayorinde in the new season are Luke James, Joshua J. Williams, and legendary icon Pam Grier, who portrays Ayorinde's mother, Athena. MovieWeb recently had the opportunity to sit down with Grier to talk about her role in Them: The Scare, and what it was like to...

Them: The Scare is a second season of the popular horror series – though not quite as you know it. Instead the show returns with new characters, in a new setting, and for Deborah Ayorinde, this posed quite the challenge, having appeared now in both projects. We had the pleasure in speaking to the actress about this unique task set for her.

When Jordan Peele first released his debut feature film, Get Out, starring Daniel Kaluuya, about a black man who thinks he is going to meet his white girlfriend’s parents and instead uncovers a disturbing townwide conspiracy, he had no idea the cultural firestorm it would unleash. Since then, several socially conscious horror films and TV shows have flooded the big and small screen, including Amazon Prime’s Them. The series was released in 2021 and set in 1953 during the Second Great Migration. Them: Covenant follows a black family who moves from North Carolina to an all-white Los Angeles neighborhood and is promptly confronted with both real and otherworldly threats to their lives. Finally, three years later, the series returns with an entirely new story.

With just a week to go until the premiere of Them: The Scare, it's safe to assume that, after making fans wait almost three years for new episodes, Prime Video will tease us as much as possible over the next few days. Today, the streamer unveiled a different-looking teaser that takes the kind of approach you'd expect from the anthology series. The new episodes debut on the platform on April 25.
