Online dating is a hellscape. That's about the only thing F Marry Kill gets right. Laura Murphy's true-crime-obsessed thriller exploits the very real perils of trusting profile pictures and text prompts enough for in-person interactions — from a bubblegum-gossip perspective? Writers Meghan Brown, Ivan Diaz, and Dan Scheinkman turn dating games into a paranoid loop of podcast feedback where one woman's "rebound" period could end in death, only to waste all that with an atrocious finale. A shaky start requires an impeccable dismount, yet F Marry Kill crumbles like the Final Destination 5 gymnast.

Jeepers Creepers (2001) is a legendary film in the canon of beloved horror classics. It follows Darry and Trish, a brother and sister on a road trip home from college through the country roads of rural north Florida. The siblings witness a suspicious incident and go on to encounter a violent and terrifying creature that stalks them throughout the film. Known locally only as the Creeper, this grotesque, winged monster emerges every 23 years to harvest body parts of victims that it uses to sustain itself, and the siblings race to escape the relentless pursuit of the supernatural creature. Although the film garnered a mixed response upon its release with some critics citing its slow pacing and reliance upon genre clichs it has gone on to gather a cult following and become an iconic entry in the library of horror films.

Appearing on "The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon" (via Variety), actor Jacob Elordi -- who plays Elvis Presley in Sofia Coppola's "Priscilla" -- admitted that, prior to portraying the King of Rock and Roll, he only really knew the music legend from ... "Lilo & Stitch." Amusing as that is, truth be told, Disney's beloved animated 2002 sci-fi feature was probably how many members of Generation Z came to learn about The King's existence for the first time, some 20 years before Elordi donned his iconic bell-bottomed white jumpsuit for Coppola's memoir and Austin Butler (permanently?) altered his voice to rock out in Baz Luhrmann's "Elvis."

If you were a regular on Twitter back in 2017, you probably came across the viral ghost story thread dubbed “Dear David.” Former BuzzFeed cartoonist Adam Ellis began his tale with the simple but potent promise: “So, my apartment is currently being haunted by the ghost of a dead child and he’s trying to kill me.”
From there, he unfolded the tale through hundreds of tweets — with photographs and hand-drawn images — over a series of weeks, his followers rapt with each update. So naturally, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood came calling.
Five years later, the “Dear David” movie is here, directed by John McPhail (“Anna and the Apocalypse”), who told TheWrap he was drawn to the horror story’s creator as much as he was Ellis’ chilling tale.

From classic books to video games to, of course, real life, there is no limit to how far horror movies can go for inspiration. After all, spooky tales can often stem from the most unlikely of places. However, one of this year's most anticipated horror flicks looks at a particularly unusual source material in order to create its own freaky universe. Produced by Lionsgate and Buzzfeed, John McPhail's Dear David, one of 2023's biggest Halloween month releases, is based on a Twitter (or should we say X?) thread.

Twitter is haunted. At least, it was in 2017, when Buzzfeed artist Adam Ellis’ Twitter thread went viral. The thread chronicled his encounters, in real-time, with the ghost of a little boy named Dear David. Because Hollywood loves IP, the thread was quickly picked up by New Line Cinema (and later Lionsgate), and woven into the feature-length haunt, Dear David. Directed by John McPhail with a screenplay by Mike Van Waes, the film endeavors to transcend its Twitter roots, but struggles to turn bite-sized digital morsels into a compelling feature-length haunting.

I’ve never been especially afraid that Janicza Bravo’s inimitable “Zola” might pave the way for more films based on Twitter threads; in the time since one of history’s biggest losers began to delegitimize the platform just because he’s so bad at using it, not once have I found myself wondering: “But where are we going to get our movies!?”
If anything, I expected BuzzFeed Studios’ “Dear David” — adapted from a viral, months-long thread that a former employee of the internet-famous content mill wrote about the ghost haunting his Queens apartment — to inspire some nostalgia for the days when the website formerly known as Twitter was still a wellspring of new media creativity, and not just a toxic cesspool of hate and misinformation. Alas, this low-rent, no-energy, seen-it-all-before genre wank left me absolutely terrified of returning to an era when micro-blogged cries for help could last for...

Dear David originally haunted our screens in 2017 as Adam Ellis, a Buzzfeed illustrator, started posting on then-Twitter about strange paranormal occurrences in his apartment. From chairs rocking to cats pawing at the front door at the same time every night, the story captivated audiences across the internet with its periodic updates and interesting photographs.
With the popularity of the thread, it should come as no surprise that a movie was developed to share Adam's (and David's) story. However, if you were anticipating a perfectly faithful adaptation of the story, that is not what Dear David presents. Taking artistic liberties and combining them with some of the most popular elements of the original haunting, Dear David has gained a significant amount of buzz and hype, but it may not be warranted.

October is in full swing, and so are the horror films at the box office. Next on the lineup is Dear David, a supernatural horror movie that, like many, is based on a supposedly true story. It follows Adam Ellis as he begins to be plagued by an online presence named David. Unsure of what David wants, Adam begins to fall down the rabbit hole trying to discover David's past and who he is.
However, there's plenty more to David than meets the eye, and as Adam learns more about the entity, things only get worse. Adam faces more and more pressure from all sides of his life as he shares his story with the online world, from his boss asking how the story will end to his friends wondering what's going on with him. How will the story end? Even Adam doesn't know.

A Twitter (now named X) thread that went viral in 2017 will be adapted to the screen in director John McPhail's latest film, Dear David. The horror project is based on the real-life experience that Buzzfeed journalist Adam Ellis (played by The Lord of Rings: The Rings of Power alum Augustus Prew) encountered in his apartment after being haunted by the ghost of a child. The thread lasted for months, and its repercussions remained long after that. After attracting the attention of multiple Twitter followers, the film is about to land in theaters, reaching a whole new audience of horror enthusiasts.

There are a few things that we wish the lead characters of horror movies knew just as confidently as avid horror watchers: Don’t go down in the basement! Don’t go exploring the source of those strange noises! And, under no circumstances, don’t document the eerie things that might be happening in your apartment while you’re asleep, unless you want to open up a portal for some uncanny pests.
For BuzzFeed comic Adam Ellis (Augustus Prew), the cynical center of John McPhail’s soulless and haphazard genre entry “Dear David,” that last rule seems to mean nothing. In that, when strange, potentially supernatural stuff starts happening around his apartment, he elects to monitor the activity. Even worse, when he isn’t asleep he decides to engage with some very real creeps—that is, the growing number of online trolls who seem to attack him from all Twitter directions.

BuzzFeed comic artist Adam Ellis began a Twitter thread in 2017 that went viral as it chronicled the eerie happenings within his apartment, with sleep paralysis giving glimpses of the specter responsible, a young ghost boy with a misshapen head named David. The movie adaptation of that thread, Dead David, aims to expand the paranormal mystery that haunted Ellis by turning inward, using Ellis and his online habits to craft a supernaturally charged cautionary tale of online bullying.

Back in 2017, BuzzFeed writer Adam Ellis wrote out a ghost story (which he swears is completely true) on Twitter, and that story caught so much attention that there was soon talk of a movie adaptation. The project, titled Dear David, was first set up at New Line Cinema in 2018, then made its way over to Lionsgate. Now Lionsgate has announced that they’ll be giving Dear David a theatrical, digital, and VOD release on October 13th – and along with that announcement comes the unveiling of a trailer, which you can watch in the embed above.
Anna and the Apocalypse‘s John McPhail having directed the film from a screenplay by Mike Van Waes. The cast of Dear David is headed up by Augustus Prew (Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series), Justin Long (Tusk), Rene Escobar Jr. (Heartland), Cameron Nicoll (Stolen by Their Father), and Andrea Bang (A Million Little Things...

A new type of horror story is about to hit the big screen. Collider is thrilled to exclusively share the first trailer for Dear David, the adaptation of Adam Ellis' Twitter thread that took the world by storm in 2017. While it's common for ghosts to appear in places that carry ancient history with them, this specter has adapted to the modern world, using current technology to torture its victim. John McPhail directed the upcoming project, with Augustus Prew playing the protagonist in a story that will make viewers think twice before accepting social media requests from unknown accounts.

Lionsgate is on to its next pot of gold, after tapping director Felipe Vargas to helm a new film in the Leprechaun horror franchise, Deadline can confirm.
Details as to the film’s plot are under wraps, though it’s billed as a reimagining for a new generation of moviegoers. Script will be penned by Mike Van Waes, one of the writers on Disney’s new live-action Lilo & Stitch film. Vertigo’s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon will produce, with Meredith Wieck and Jon Humphrey to oversee for Lionsgate, following Dan Freedman’s negotiating of deals for the studio.
Warwick Davis starred as a vengeful leprechaun in six Leprechaun films put out following Lionsgate’s acquisition of Trimark Pictures back in 2000, though he’s not expected to return. It seems that with the toning down of censorship in Indonesia, filmmakers are now free(er) to deal with issues that could not be touched before, such as female desire, the harshness of the school system and the blight of social media, through realistic approaches. The recent “Like & Share” and “Photocopier” are two of the most renowned samples, with Lucky Kuswandi's latest work, “Dear David” also moving in the same direction.

Love is in the air on Netflix in February, from new romcoms like the Reese Witherspoon-starring “Your Place or Mine” to the return of murderous stalker Joe Goldberg in “You” Season 2 part 1.
Penn Badgley has long dispelled any misnomers of his “You” character being a romantic, but Joe himself still believes that’s who he is at his core. After killing his wife and faking his own death, Joe sets off for Europe so he can find Marianne (Tati Gabrielle), the woman he convinced himself he’s in love with before she learned the truth and fled. But breaking old habits has never been easy for old Joe, who quickly gets caught up in a most dubious clique of London high society that has its own struggles with lust, power, and the occasionally fatal crime.
