The trailer for Nisha Ganatra’s “Freakier Friday,” starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, has been unveiled. The film is a sequel to the 2003 comedy “Freaky Friday,” starring Curtis and Lohan as mother-daughter duo Tess and Anna Coleman.

According to a press release from The Walt Disney Company, the sequel features a “multigenerational twist,” with the film picking up many years after Tess and Anna originally swapped bodies. Anna has a daughter of her own, plus a soon-to-be stepdaughter. Tess and Anna navigate the challenges that come with merging two families and “discover that lightning might indeed strike twice.” The trailer reveals that this time it’s a four-way body swap as Anna, Tess and Anna’s daughter and step-daughter all wake up in different bodies.

Joining Curtis and Lohan are returning stars Chad Michael Murray, Mark Harmon, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky and Rosalind Chao.

Rom-coms have been no small piece of director Mark Waters’s career. He’s the man behind films including “Just Like Heaven” and “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past,” he produced “500 Days of Summer,” and more.

Ganatra recently directed two episodes of Hulu’s Welcome to Chippendales, along with 2020 film The High Note starring Dakota Johnson and Tracee Ellis Ross and 2019’s Late Night with Mindy Kaling and Emma Thompson.

American filmmaker Jim Jarmusch has directed the new music video for Cat Power‘s version of The Pogues’ “A Pair of Brown Eyes” (see below) from her new album Covers, which is currently out on Domino Records.

A director widely considered one of the film industry’s most original and unique minds, Jarmusch’s filmography includes acknowledged classics such as “Down By Law,” “Stranger Than Paradise,” “Night On Earth,” and the Forest Whitaker action pic “Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai.” It’s also worth mentioning Jarmusch’s musical reach is similarly pathbreaking, having worked with luminaries Tom Waits, Neil Young, RZA, Gza, Joe Strummer, Iggy Pop, and more.

Fans of Alex Cox’s Straight to Hell will be delighted to know that Jim Jarmusch has re-entered the universe of the Pogues–tangentially, at least. The Only Lovers Left Alive director has helmed the music video for Cat Power’s cover of A Pair of Brown Eyes, the 1985 single from the punk band.

Boasting quite a behind-the-scenes crew, the video was shot by Jarmusch and David Lynch collaborator Frederick Elmes and edited by Affonso Gonçalves, also a frequent collaborator with Jarmusch as well as Todd Haynes. Coming from Cat Power’s latest album Covers, the video captures a stripped-down performance with a fittingly hazy vision.

Cat Power has enlisted indie filmmaker Jim Jarmusch to direct the new video for her rendition of the Pogues’ “A Pair of Brown Eyes,” the latest single from Chan Marshall’s recently released Covers album.

The dreamy visual was filmed at New York City’s Blonde Studios, with Jarmusch’s camera capturing Cat Power as she performs the song alone on a Mellotron in a cloud-like setting. The video marks the first collaboration between Marshall and the Down by Law director.

Those words appear in a towering font on the poster for the 1994 film “Swimming With Sharks,” behind an image of (now disgraced) actor Kevin Spacey screaming directly into the face of his co-star, Frank Whaley. The film gave audiences an unflinching look at Hollywood’s workplace culture — as it was then, before current efforts to eradicate toxic and inexcusable behavior.

Verbal and physical abuse, staplers and phones hurled at employees, 20-hour workdays, sexual harassment and rampant degradation all play out in the film, which was reportedly based on writer-director George Huang’s experiences under producers Joel Silver and Scott Rudin. “Swimming With Sharks” has become a touchstone for industry survivors, and Roku will unveil a TV series adaptation of the film on April 15.

In the nearly two decades since it was released, a subgenre has sprung up surrounding these backlot stories, especially in the post-#MeToo era.

“Bridgerton” glided to center stage when it premiered on Netflix in late 2021, and its classical quartet covers of pop hits captivated audiences as much as they gelled with the show’s modernized Regency-era landscape. Now, Season 2 will offer more of the same, with Capitol Records set to release a soundtrack and series covers — of artists like Harry Styles and Nirvana — March 25, the same day “Bridgerton” returns to Netflix.

Under music supervisor Justin Kamps and composer Kris Bowers, Vitamin String Quartet return with reimaginings of Nirvana’s “Stay Away” and Robyn’s “Dancing on My Own,” after previously covering songs like Ariana Grande’s “Thank U, Next” and Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy” in Season 1.

The 2022 Oscar nominations are nearly here, and on Thursday morning the Academy announced that actors Tracee Ellis Ross and Leslie Jordan will be on hand to announce the nominees next week.

“Spoiler Alert,” a new feature led by Jim Parsons from Focus Features, has added four stars to its ensemble cast.

Antoni Porowski of Netflix’s “Queer Eye,” Tony award winner Nikki M. James (“The Book of Mormon”), Jeffery Self (“Search Party”) and Bill Irwin (“Rachel Getting Married”) have all joined the project directed by Michael Showalter.

Having just wrapped principal photography in New York, the film is based on Michael Ausiello’s bestselling memoir “Spoiler Alert: The Hero Dies: A Memoir of Love, Loss, and Other Four-Letter Words.” It charts the emotionally turbulent 11-month journey of Ausiello’s former partner Kit, from his diagnosis with terminal cancer to his death. Interwoven in the narrative are glimpses of the roller-coaster ride that was the couple’s 14-year romance.

The actors join the previously announced Parsons, Ben Aldridge, and Sally Field — who reunites with Showalter following their 2015 quirky festival darling “Hello, My Name is Doris.

Chinese authorities hold absolute control over film distribution in the world’s largest film market, thanks to strict censorship, protectionist policies limiting the import of foreign content, and control over release dates.

New data from Chinese sources show that control made life harder for foreign films in 2021.

Foreign films can formally only be distributed in China through one of two centralized state-owned enterprises, and are imported as either one of a limited quota of 34 “revenue-share” films, for which the studio gets a cut of the box office, or on “flat fee” (aka “buy-out”) terms. The China rights are licensed for a lump sum by a local firm that then takes on the risks and reaps the rewards of getting the work through censorship. Efforts to change the system and bring China into closer compliance with its Wto obligations have stalled, and no progress is expected in the coming year.

Kelvin Harrison Jr. already has his eye on his next major project: portraying the late great artist Jean-Michel Basquiat in a forthcoming biopic. Variety reports the Cyrano actor has nabbed the role of the Haitian-Puerto Rican American artist - whose renowned paintings and street art are known for defining the Neo-expressionism arts movement of the 1980s - in a film titled Samo Lives. The movie will reportedly "celebrate the life, career, and impact" of Basquiat.

The biopic will be developed and financed by Endeavor Content and directed by Julius Onah, though dates for production have not been detailed yet. On the official website for the film, a statement reads, "It is time to tell the story of Jean-Michel Basquiat." Nisha Ganatra, a Golden Globe winner and an Emmy nominee for her work as a director/producer on “Transparent,” has topped the list of directors working in advertising, ranked by advertising industry festival Cannes Lions. Ganatra previously won a Cannes Lions Grand Prix for Film Craft: Directing for her work on “#wombstories” for feminine hygiene brand Bodyform, known as Libresse outside the U.K. Variety spoke to Ganatra about the film.

Second in the Cannes Lions list was Markus Ahlm for Burger King’s “The Moldy Whopper,” and third was Similar But Different (Charlotte Fassler/Dani Girdwood) for Diesel’s “Enjoy Before Returning.” Fourth was Danielle Rizkallah, fifth was Karena Evans and sixth was Santi Dulce. Seven female directors are ranked in the top 10, the highest in the festival’s history.
