A collection of new animated series has been greenlit for James Gunn and Peter Safran's DC Studios. The projects, announced at an industry briefing on Feb. 21, aim to bolster the Dcu brand with programming for "younger-skewing" audiences.

Per Variety, the updated animated lineup kicks off with My Adventures with Green Lantern, centering on high schooler Jessica Cruz, after she inherits a power ring. Notably, the title carries the same naming convention as My Adventures with Superman, Max's successful Superman anime, unrelated to the Dcu. Jake Wyatt spearheads the project as executive producer with Stephanie Gonzaga serving as co-executive producer.

It’s been just over two years since James Gunn and Peter Safran mapped out their initial slate of projects for DC Studios and what would be the newly revamped Dcu, a new interconnected universe of superhero movies and films based on DC characters and kicking off in earnest with Gunn’s “Superman” arriving this summer.

So where do they stand? In a press event last week on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, Gunn and Safran held court with journalists about all they had cooking, the stuff that’s moving forward and the stuff that has lost the wind in its sails or has hit a snag. That included everything from details on the studio’s Batman films — both the Dcu film “The Brave and the Bold” and updates on the non-canon “The Batman 2” from Matt Reeves — as well as a potential “Teen Titans” movie and the update...

Only one of the conceptualized spinoffs even had a pilot produced, even after the CW drama went out of its way to include multiple backdoor pilots. Every proposed spinoff would have starred at least one iconic DC hero, and with fans having only recently learned about some of them, it's possible there are still pitches that haven't been unveiled.

The long-awaited return of Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle may be happening sooner than fans expected. The actor, who made his debut as the young DC superhero in Blue Beetle, recently shared the release window for the upcoming animated continuation of the 2023 movie.

Maridueña spoke with The Direct at last night's Saturn Awards, where he revealed that he was hoping for the Blue Beetle animated series, which will be set in James Gunn's DC Universe, to premiere in 2026. "I'm ready to come back. We're hitting hard this animated project, hoping to get this settled out this year to show everyone next year," the actor shared. Story details for the animated continuation, which was announced last June, remain under wraps. Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto andwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer are attached as executive producers on the project, with Christian Martinez writing the series and Miguel Pugaserving as showrunner and director.

Xolo Maridueña is one of very few former Dceu stars who won't be recast in James Gunn's rebooted DC Universe, as the actor is set to return as Blue Beetle in a new animated project. Maridueña is best known for his starring role in Netflix's Cobra Kai, as well as 2023's Blue Beetle, which was arguably the best of the Dceu's final slate of movies before the reins were handed to Gunn. Last summer, the news broke that DC Studios is moving forward with an animated Blue Beetle TV series. The show was already in development when the announcement was made, with Miguel Puga (The Casagrandes) said to have started work on the project months before. 

He'll serve as showrunner, while Cristian Martinez (Women of the Movement) is writing the series. Angel Manuel Soto and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, director and screenwriter of the 2023 movie, respectively, executive producing alongside John Ricard. Galen Vaisman, another Blue Beetle executive producer, is overseeing the series for DC Studios.

Jaime Reyes actor Xolo Maridueña is reprising his role alongside unnamed other actors who also starred in the Blue Beetle movie. However, there have been conflicting reports about whether it's a continuation or soft reboot meant to bring Jaime into the Dcu without any Dceu baggage.

Talking to The Direct at the Saturn Awards, Maridueña expressed his enthusiasm to play Blue Beetle again.

Back in June, Deadline confirmed that a Blue Beetle animated series, featuring Maridueña, was in the works. This comes after Maridueña starred as the titular Blue Beetle in the character's 2023 movie, one of the last DC Extended Universe (or SnyderVerse) movies to release before the switch to Gunn.

He is one of only a select few Dceu actors to return in Gunn's new slate of movies and shows as the same character, joining the likes of Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), Sean Gunn (Weasel), John Cena (Peacemaker), and a couple of others.

2025 is the year that DC gets a rebirth on the silver screen. It’s been nearly a year and a half since Angel Manuel Soto’s Blue Beetle was released as part of the Dceu franchise of DC films, and while critics and audiences responded well, sadly, the film's release was poorly timed to the end of what is known as "Snyderverse." The film was the 14th release in the franchise, which began with Man of Steel in 2013 and ended with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in 2023.

Whilst the Dceu was relatively short-lived, it had some truly fantastic character portrayals, such as Xolo Maridueña, who played Blue Beetle and will continue to play the role in James Gunn’s reboot of the franchise as the Dcu.
