1923 is a Western crime drama series created by Taylor Sheridan. The Paramount+ series is the second prequel series to the extremely popular Paramount Network series Yellowstone, and it is set in 1923. Director Lee Cronin's recent Evil Dead Rise proved to be a big success for Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert’s Ghost House Pictures (grossing $147 million against its $15-19 million budget), so it was inevitable that another instalment in the iconic horror franchise would enter development sooner rather than later.

Back in February, we got word that Vermin director Sébastien Vaniček had been enlisted to co-write and helm the then untitled project, which was described as a spin-off. This indicated that the movie would not be a direct sequel to Rise, but all plot details are still under wraps for the time being.

Now, Vaniček has taken to Instagram to announce that the movie is officially titled Evil Dead Burn, and will be released at some point in 2026.

With Seeds, Canadian Mohawk actor Kaniehtiio Horn has embraced the indigenous horror-thriller genre — with some added comedy.

“I didn’t want to make a trauma movie,” the Reservation Dogs actor tells The Hollywood Reporter about her directorial debut, a genre-bending home invasion film she wrote, stars in and produced. And she wants her world premiere audience at the Toronto Film Festival to laugh.

Heartily. And in the right places. Horn says laughter abounds in indigenous culture and communities — however varied are the tribes and language groups. That’s especially laughing with, and not being laughed at: “Oh my God, we are funny! We can make fun of each other, but it’s always in a teasing way. It’s always in a loving way.”

And before writing the Seeds screenplay, Horn never considered jumping into the director’s chair. But after playing the Deer Lady on FX’s Reservation Dogs...

FX’s pilot The Sensitive Kind from creator Sterlin Harjo (Reservation Dogs) has added five to its cast: Killer Mike (Ozark), Kaniehtiio Horn (Reservation Dogs), Cody Lightning (Echo), Michael Hitchcock (Grand Death Lotto) and Ryan Kiera Armstrong (Star Wars: Skeleton Crew).

Details as to the roles these actors will play are under wraps.

Also written, directed and exec produced by Harjo, The Sensitive Kind is described as a Tulsa noir about a guy (Ethan Hawke) who knows too much. As previously announced, Keith David, Siena East, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Tim Blake Nelson, Scott Shepherd, Tracy Letts, Kyle Maclachlan and Macon Blair will also star.

The project is Harjo’s first for TV since Reservation Dogs, the acclaimed FX dramedy which won an AFI Award for each of its three seasons. Additional EPs include Garrett Basch and Hawke. FX Productions is the studio.

Amy Forsyth and Christian Cooke have joined the cast of “Plainclothes,” a new independent film from writer-director Carmen Emmi. They will star alongside Tom Blyth and Russell Tovey, who Variety previously reported would lead the project.

Set in the ’90s and inspired by true events, the film follows a working-class undercover officer tasked with entrapping and apprehending gay men, only to find himself drawn to one of his targets. The film is produced by Arthur Landon, Colby Cote, and Eric Podwall on behalf of Page 1 Entertainment and Lorton Entertainment. Alex Wenger and April Kelley will co-produce.

Forsyth will play Emily, ex-girlfriend and trusted confidant to Lucas (Blyth). Italy-based sales firm Tvco has picked up worldwide sales rights to Embers, the feature directorial debut of UK actor Christian Cooke, and is representing the title at this week’s European Film Market (EFM).

Embers stars Cooke opposite Ruth Bradley in the story of a sexual surrogate (Bradley) who is employed to help a high-security psychiatric patient (Cooke) overcome his intimacy issues to make parole.

The film debuted at Raindance Film Festival in October; it is produced by April Kelley and Sara Huxley of Mini Productions, with Arthur Landon of Lorton Entertainment and Cooke.

Here in the United States, Lee Cronin’s Evil Dead Rise is headed to Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD on June 27, but you won’t find any special features listed on the back of the box. Bloody Disgusting has learned, however, that the UK home video release of Evil Dead Rise from StudioCanal will include two bonus features not found on the US physical release.

David Thewlis has signed on to star opposite Olivia Colman in “Landscapers,” HBO’s four-episode limited series from Sky Studios about a seemingly ordinary couple who become the focus of an investigation when dead bodies turn up in their yard.

Will Sharpe, who worked with Colman in the offbeat 2016 British comedy series “Flowers,” has signed on to direct all four episodes. The series hails from the Sister production banner and first-time TV series creator Ed Sinclair. Jane Featherstone, Chris Fry, Colman and Sinclair are executive producers for Featherstone’s Sister banner and Colman’s South of the River Pictures. Production is under way in the U.K.

Thewlis is known for his role as werewolf Remus Lupin in the “Harry Potter” film franchise. He also played Ares in 2017’s “Justice League.” Other recent credits include the 2017 edition of FX’s “Fargo,” National Geographic’s “Barkskins” and last year’s Charlie Kaufman...

The upcoming “Hawkeye” series at Disney Plus has cast a number of key roles, Variety has learned exclusively from sources.

Along with series leads Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld, Vera Farmiga, Florence Pugh, Fra Fee, Tony Dalton, Alaqua Cox, and Zahn McClarnon will all appear in the series.

Reps for Disney and the actors did not immediately respond to Variety‘s request for comment.

Farmiga is attached to play the Marvel character Eleanor Bishop, the mother of Kate Bishop (Steinfeld).

Farmiga was previously nominated for the best supporting actress Oscar for her role in “Up in the Air.” She is also known for her starring role in the A&e series “Bates Motel” and in films like “The Departed” and “The Conjuring” and “The Conjuring 2.” She is repped by CAA, Authentic Talent & Literary Management, and Peikoff Mahan.

Exclusive: National Geographic has greenlighted a second season of scientific thriller The Hot Zone, which will focus on the anthrax attacks of 2001. Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson return as executive producers and showrunners of the new installment, produced by Touchstone Television and Scott Free Productions. Preliminary casting for The Hot Zone: Anthrax is already underway.

“The gripping, propulsive story of the hunt for the anthrax killer who terrorized the country in the dark days that followed the Sept. 11 attack couldn’t be more timely,” said Carolyn Bernstein, EVP, Global Scripted Content and Documentary Films. “As the world battles Covid-19, another deadly and mysterious virus, The Hot Zone: Anthrax is a scientific thriller for our time.”

The Hot Zone started off as a Julianna Margulies-starring limited series, chronicling the Ebola virus outbreak, which launched on Memorial Day 2019 and became Nat Geo’s most watched scripted series ever and second most-watched series overall.

Gravitas Ventures will launch Luke Eve’s romantic drama I Met a Girl in the US as a Premium VOD release on September 11, followed a month later by VOD on a dozen digital platforms.

The original plan was a cinema release for the film starring Brenton Thwaites, Lily Sullivan, Joel Jackson, Peter Rowsthorn and Zahra Newman.

But in light of widespread cinema closures, producer Adam Dolman tells If: “Gravitas wanted to release the film as soon as possible to take advantage of the growth in the VOD business.”

Scripted by Adam’s brother Glen Dolman (Bloom), the plot follows Thwaites’ Devon, a 20-something aspiring musician with schizophrenia, who relies on his older brother Nick (Jackson) to get by. On a downward spiral, Devon is saved by Sullivan’s Lucy – a mysterious girl who is just as impulsive and romantic as he is.

Almost 18 months after the Disney-Fox merger closed, Disney is finally dropping the “Fox” from its acquired television studios’ names as part of a major rebranding across 20th Century Fox Television, Fox 21 Television Studios, ABC Studios and ABC Signature.

Under the changes, ABC Studios and its subsidiary ABC Signature will merge into one studio, ABC Signature, which will be led by current ABC Studios president Jonnie Davis. Meanwhile, 20th Century Fox Television, which is run by Carolyn Cassidy, will become 20th Television, and Fox 21 Television Studios, led by Bert Salke, will be renamed Touchstone Television, after the Disney-owned television brand that was retired in 2007.

The studios’ name changes are effective immediately and come complete with new logos and motion end cards, which will be used for all new episodes of Disney Television Studios programming going forward. Per Disney, “Library titles and episodes broadcast before the rebrand will remain unchanged.

Disney Television Studios has launched a major rebrand of its three studios, 20th Century Fox Television, Fox 21 TV Studios and ABC Studios/ABC Signature. The move comes nearly 18 months after Disney’s $71.3 billion acquisition of key 21st Century Fox assets and seven months after the Disney-owned film companies — 20th Century Fox Studios and Fox Searchlight Pictures — dropped “Fox” in January to become 20th Century Studios and Searchlight Pictures.

ABC Studios and its cable/streaming subsidiary ABC Signature, led by president Jonnie Davis, will merge into one studio entitled ABC Signature. Fox 21 Television Studios, led by president Bert Salke, will be renamed Touchstone Television. 20th Century Fox Television, led by president Carolyn Cassidy, will become 20th Television. Because they are all part of Disney TV Studios, the divisions also all dropped “studios” from their monikers.

Gold Derby: Marcia, we’ve seen you onscreen for over three decades. You have an Oscar and a Tony. How or why did you have it in you to get out there into the wilderness to film this show?

Marcia Gay Harden: Well, first of all, I’m a working mom, so it doesn’t matter how long I’ve been working. I want to still keep working.

The 2020 Emmy ballots have been released by the Television Academy, so we now know which shows, actors, etc. are in contention for this year’s golden statues. Nat Geo’s limited series “Barkskins” accounts for two entries on the performer ballot, David Thewlis in lead and Marcia Gay Harden in supporting, and it’s a force to be reckoned with for creative Emmy contenders like composer Colin Stetson. This eight-episode series, based on Annie Proulx‘s 2016 novel, tells the story of European colonists trying to make a home for themselves in New France.

Nat Geo is no stranger to the Emmy Awards, earning Best Limited Series bids for “Genius: Einstein” (2018) and “Genius: Picasso” (2019). A third “Genius” installment, starring Cynthia Erivo as Aretha Franklin, was originally scheduled to air this season but was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. There are a number of reasons to binge NatGeo’s “Barkskins,” an adaption of Annie Proulx’s celebrated novel, this summer. Recently, National Geographic finished airing the first season of the channel's historical but fictional drama series, Barkskins. The TV show hasn't been cancelled or renewed for a second season yet but the show's creator, executive producer Elwood Reid, is hoping for a few more seasons to fully tell the series' story.

Based on the 2016 bestselling novel by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Annie Proulx of Brokeback Mountain fame, National Geographic’s scripted drama series Barkskins is a savage trip back in time to the wild frontiers of the late 17th century. A loose adaptation of Annie Proulx’s novel, “Barkskins” is a unique beast even in the era of Peak TV. Executive Produced by film and broadway uber-producer Scott Rudin, it was created and written primarily by Elwood Reed whose previous work don’t necessarily scream 17th century period piece set in the French Canadian wilderness. National Geographic Networks has greenlighted Consider This, a podcast focused on Emmy season hosted by veteran journalist Stacey Wilson Hunt.

The 12-episode series launched Monday and will feature longform interviews with Nat Geo personalities including Dr. Amani Ballour, Bobby Bones, Jeff Goldblum, Dr. Jane Goodall, Bear Grylls, Marcia Gay Harden, Keegan-Michael Key, Gordon Ramsay, David Thewlis and Neil deGrasse Tyson.

It also will take Emmy voters inside such shows as Cosmos: Possible Worlds, The Cave, Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted, Life Below Zero, Barkskins and Sea of Shadows with interviews of their showrunners and producers.

That was no way to end a "limited" series.

The French settlement of Wobik was under attack by the Iroquois and the fates of key characters remained up in the air after Barkskins Season 1 Episode 7 and Barkskins Season 1 Episode 8.

Sure, cliffhangers are nothing new. But usually, they come at the end of a potentially ongoing series. Limited series usually include, oh, I don't know, conclusions.

But before the season, showrunner Elwood Reid admitted that Barkskins was a limited series in name only, with the uncertainty about Covid-19 leaving future productions impossible to plan.

In that same interview, Reid added that his source material, Annie Proulx's lengthy novel of the same name, had several seasons worth of material just waiting to be tapped.

So future seasons will come down to what direction the powers that be at National Geographic Channel want to take.
