2024 just made the Marvel Cinematic Universe Punisher casting all the more exciting. While only a single MCU movie was put on the schedule for 2024, the year has been significant for the franchise in many ways. Said lone movie - Deadpool & Wolverine - was a major success for the MCU timeline that brought the Fox X-Men universe into the multiverse, and X-Men '97 similarly brought back the classic cartoon series to much praise and critical acclaim. The year has also seen many big reveals for the future, including the news that Robert Downey Jr. will be playing the McU's Doctor Doom.
2024's various awards also saw some nods to the MCU, with Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 being nominated for a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe Award, an Academy Award, a range of Saturn Awards, and winning a Visual Effects Society Award. However, it's the 2024 Emmys that make the...

Exclusive: Branden Cook (Industry), Spencer House (The Time Traveler’s Wife) and Benjamin Wadsworth (Deadly Class) are set as series regulars opposite Grace Van Patten and Jackson White in Tell Me Lies, Hulu’s straight-to-series drama based on Carola Lovering’s novel, which is executive produced by Emma Roberts.
Adapted by Meaghan Oppenheimer, Tell Me Lies follows a tumultuous but intoxicating relationship as it unfolds over the course of 8 years. When Lucy Albright (Van Patten) and Stephen DeMarco (White) meet at college, they are at that formative age when seemingly mundane choices lead the way to irrevocable consequences. Although their relationship begins like any typical campus romance, they quickly fall into an addictive entanglement that will permanently alter not only their lives, but the lives of everyone around them.
Cook will play Evan, a kind, intelligent guy who often feels stunted by his father’s success, causing him to sometimes lack motivation.

From The Walking Dead and Punisher to The Wolf of Wall Street, Small Engine Repair, The Many Saints of Newark, and this month’s King Richard, Jon Bernthal has established himself as the hard-working, all-in, go-to, actor’s-actor of the moment. In this episode, he talks about some of the elements he uses—generosity, energy management, isolation, fear-as-fuel, group strength—to do his work, the one thing all great directors have in common, why he’d be just as grateful doing regional theater, plus much more! If you’re looking for someone to throw a punch or take on a zombie horde, well, Jon Bernthal’s probably your guy. But when you’re looking for an actor who can credibly serve-and-volley, he might not spring to mind.
That was the dilemma facing “King Richard” director Reinaldo Marcus Green when he was looking for someone to portray Rick Macci, the tennis coach who took a chance on a young Venus and Serena Williams. Bernthal has made a career playing tough guys, such as gritty Marvel antihero Frank Castle or “The Walking Dead’s” Shane Walsh. When looking for an actor to play Tony Soprano’s father for “The Many Saints of Newark,” Bernthal, who has broken his nose more than a dozen times, made perfect sense. But to play the happily square Macci, he wasn’t an obvious fit. Imagine casting the Punisher as Ned Flanders.

Well this going to be the shortest review I ever write… Small Engine Repair is as close to perfection as it gets. 5 out of 5. Told you shortest review ever… Actually I need to dig deeper into the film!
Based on a play of the same name written by director and leading man John Pollono, Small Engine Repair tells the story of Frank (Pollono), Swaino (Bernthal) and Packie (Whigham). Three friends from small-town nowhere that have always been there for each other. We first meet our boys as Frank’s daughter Crystal (Ciara Bravo) has found out she is heading to university. One thing is for sure the love these men have for Crystal is unshakeable. After a night out to celebrate the bond between our boys becomes somewhat strained. We jump...

The seams are showing in John Pollono’s long-aborning screen adaptation of his 2011 one-act play. In its original stage incarnation, Small Engine Repair was a taut, testosterone-fueled, darkly comic drama that, while it wore its David Mamet and Neil Labute influences a little too obviously, delivered incisive characterizations and some nastily entertaining plot twists. In his effort to flesh out the bare-bones story for the big screen, writer-director Pollono adds situations and characters, some previously discussed but never seen. The results, although sporadically arresting, feel awkward, like a child wearing clothing a few sizes too big.

The darkly funny American indie drama “Small Engine Repair” works best when it’s a hangout comedy starring three schlubby New England burnouts.
Based on writer-director John Pollono’s stage play, “Small Engine Repair” eventually becomes an unpleasant slow-burning thriller about revenge, sexual violence and toxic masculinity. Thankfully Pollono and his fellow co-leads, Jon Bernthal and Shea Whigham, carry the movie throughout with some choice one-liners and abundant bromantic chemistry.
Pollono, Bernthal and Whigham keep things light, believable, and charming enough, even after the abrupt and seemingly random arrival of preppy drug dealer Chad threatens to ruin the movie’s otherwise aimless fun. Chad pushes “Small Engine Repair” into unexpectedly dark territory, the kind that invites comparisons with real-life sexual predators like Brett Kavanaugh and other prominent politicians. Pollono’s affable drama doesn’t say much about its characters’ boozy locker talk, but it does hold together well enough thanks...

"I wanted tonight to be special." Vertical Entertainment has released a full trailer for an indie film titled Small Engine Repair, a feature film adaptation of the stage play by John Pollono. This was originally set to premiere at last year's SXSW Film Festival before it was cancelled. Pollono writes and directs, making his feature directorial debut, and co-stars in it with an impressive cast. It's better to know as little about this story going into it. The seemingly casual reunion of three old friends at an out-of-the-way repair shop masks a hidden agenda fueled by the arrival of a privileged young yuppie. This is described as a "black comedy that takes a dark dramatic turn" - and oh boy does it take a turn. The trailer also features some very nice quotes from various other directors, including one from Edgar Wright. Starring Jon Bernthal, Shea Whigham, John Pollono, Jordana Spiro,...

Exclusive: Small Engine Repair, the indie adaptation of John Pollono’s play, finally gets its big screen moment as it tries to find theatrical distribution the only way it is done in Los Angeles these days — at the drive-in. Written and directed by Pollono a decade after it became an underground stage hit in LA, the film will be screened by 30West and CAA Media Finance for buyers at The Electric Dusk Drive-In on Wednesday. I wrote about the film in April in a Coping With Covid-19 column, this after its SXSW premiere got cancelled along with the festival because the pandemic shut down everything.

Tom Holland's reunion project with the Russo Brothers, Cherry, has been purchased by Apple. The long-awaited movie will premiere on Apple TV+ in early 2021. Holland previously worked with Joe and Anthony Russo in Marvel Cinematic Universe projects Captain America: Civil War, Infinity War, and Endgame. The drug-fueled drama is being released in time to be an Academy Awards contender, and Holland apparently gave a powerful performance that is light years away from his Peter Parker character in the Spider-Man movies.
Apple Original Films reportedly purchased Cherry for just over $40 million. In addition to a reunion with Tom Holland, the project is also the first movie for the Russo Brothers since Endgame hit theaters in 2019. Along with Holland, Cherry also stars Ciara Bravo (Small Engine Repair), Kelli Burglund (Now Apocalypse), Jack Reynor (Midsommar), Forrest Goodluck (The Revenant), Jeff Wahlberg (Dora and the Lost City of Gold), Michael Gandolfini (The Deuce...

Exclusive: Jordana Spiro (Ozark) and Josh Andrés Rivera (West Side Story) have been cast as leads in Vegas High, HBO Max’s coming-of-age period drama pilot from writer Sarah-Raquel Jimenez, director Gillian Robespierre and Michael Showalter’s Semi-Formal Prods. HBO Max is the studio.
Written by Jimenez and directed by Robespierre, Vegas High is inspired by Jimenez’s own experience. It is a 1990s-set coming-of-age story about Laura, a girl who’s caught between two worlds: the fast-paced lifestyle of Las Vegas and her strong Mormon faith and community.
Spiro plays Laura’s mom, Diane. The epitome of a Mormon housewife, Diane is compassionate, complicated and funny. But as a young mother of four, she struggles with the repetitive efforts to keep her family, home and church duties up and running.
Rivera is playing Josh, Diane’s reckless, charismatic son and Laura’s brother who lives unapologetically. Inappropriate but hilarious,...
