In the 1970s, there was arguably no bigger star than Burt Reynolds. Though his talent was undeniable, he'd become more notable for his presence in films where he could be a fictionalized version of himself as the smiling, charming protagonist, à la Smokey and the Bandit. 1972's Fuzz, released two months before Deliverance— one of his best performances, falls into the latter, an action-comedy featuring Reynolds as a detective trying to catch a bomber who’s targeting local politicians. It is one of his better efforts, with Roger Ebertcalling it an “offbeat, funny, quietly cheerful movie.” Cheerful for the most part, that is. Two eerily similar, disturbing scenes in Fuzz were later replicated in real life, sparking an outcry over violence in film.

After nearly a month of waiting, Neil Young has finally posted a review of A Complete Unknown on his website, The Neil Young Archives. He liked the movie, but even more interestingly than the rare Shakey movie review, Young revealed that he once threw Bob Dylan off his tour bus because he "didn't recognize him.

It is rather difficult to describe “Song of the Bandits”, a wild, exciting mix of historical drama, spectacular actioner, rugged western and comedy. Very sad news this week out of the reality television universe:

James Lee Williams — better known by their stage name The Vivienne, who won the first-ever RuPaul’s Drag Race UK in 2019 — has passed away.

They were 32 years old.

Williams’ death was confirmed by manager Simon Jones, who wrote via Instagram over the weekend that his client was no longer with us.

“It is with immense sadness that we let you know our beloved James Lee Williams, The Vivienne, has passed away this weekend,” reads the message.

“James was an incredibly loved, warmhearted and amazing person. Their family are heartbroken at the loss of their son, brother and uncle. They are so proud of the wonderful things James achieved in their life and career. We will not be releasing any further details.

Sally Field, the veteran actress last seen in 80 for Brady, is in talks to star in the feature that is to be directed by Olivia Newman, perhaps best known for helming Where the Crawdads Sing. Newman is also writing the script with John Whittington.

Producing the adaptation will be David Levine via Anonymous Content along with Bryan Unkeless (I, Tonya) and Peter Craig, the established screenwriter of The Town and The Batman. Craig is also Field’s son.

Mel Gibson has been no stranger to controversy, but his crime drama, Bandit, is proving that his star power is far from fading. With a respectable 71% score on Rotten Tomatoes, Bandit has soared into the #8 spot on Paramount+s Top 10 list, demonstrating that audiences still have an appetite for gritty, character-driven narrativesand that Gibson can still draw a crowd. Bandit is based on the true story of Gilbert Galvan Jr., one of Canadas most notorious bank robbers, who became infamous in the 1980s for pulling off over 50 heists while on the run from U.S. authorities. Gibson stars as Tommy Kay, a hardened career criminal who becomes Galvans mentor and partner-in-crime. The film also stars Josh Duhamel as Galvan, whose charm and cunning earned him the nickname "The Flying Bandit" due to his frequent use of small planes to evade capture.

Nearly ten years after director George Miller returned to the post-apocalyptic wasteland and redefined the action genre with Mad Max: Fury Road, the Australian auteur returned to replace Charlize Theron with Anya Taylor Joy to tell the origin story of the warrior who helped Mad Max cross that fury road in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. On paper, it looks like the perfect comedy storm: a cult-classic post-Monty Python adventure from Terry Gilliam and Michael Palin, adapted and updated by the dudes behind What We Do In The Shadows and The Inbetweeners. But, for all its pedigree and Apple-funded VFX budget, this 21st-century Time Bandits doesn’t deliver the swag.

The main culprits are the titular gang. Portrayed in the original by dwarf performers including David Rappaport, Kenny Baker and Jack Purvis, the Bandits were an engagingly energetic crew, whose fractious antics powered much of the action-comedy (when the big-star cameos weren’t happening) — as loveable as they were amoral. Here, the noticeably ganglier likes of Lisa Kudrow, Roger Jean Nsengiyumva and Charlyne Yi fail to measure up.

The extended running time doesn’t do the concept any favours

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is one of the biggest expansions that have ever been made, eclipsing the size of some full RPGs. Although there are likely hundreds, if not thousands of pieces of dialogue added in the Dlc, with something this size, some pieces are bound to be cut. Cut content often reveals more information than what is in the base game and could show what the developer was thinking as the game was in production. Sometimes, things get cut for being a little too overt at times.

Of all the classes that Elden Ring has to offer, the Bandit is the class that players can use to create the best builds that revolve around dexterity, vigor, and endurance. The Bandit class excels in nimble combat, often relying upon the ability to dodge frequently and technical offense over brute strength. Additionally, since dodging plays a huge role in this class, new players may find it more challenging to play as a Bandit than they would a straightforward character build in Elden Ring like a Hero.

Aside from the Wretch, the Bandit is the lowest level character that players can start with, beginning at just level five, but that doesn't mean it's the weakest or worst by far. Exclusive: Leander Suleiman will play comedy writer Anne Beatts in Sony Pictures’ film SNL 1975 (working title), based on real-life behind-the-scenes accounts of the opening night of Saturday Night Live, Deadline has learned.

Writing for SNL from 1975-1979, Beatts garnered two Emmys and six nominations for her work during that period. Thereafter, she created Square Pegs, the cult classic sitcom starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Amy Linker, which debuted on CBS in 1982.

Here we go again. In recent years, Mel Gibson’s found himself stuck in a never-ending series of Dtv-style action thrillers, similar to the kind of fare Bruce Willis churned out before his retirement. Along with his contemporaries like John Travolta, John Cusack and many others, Gibson seems totally stuck in a rut, with virtually all of these films (most of which he only has minor roles in) going totally unnoticed. Has anyone seen Panama, Agent Game, On the Line, Confidential Informant, Desperation Road, Dangerous or Force of Nature? There have been some bright spots, such as the solid Bandit (a movie he was proud of when I interviewed him) or Fatman, but for the most part, Gibson’s career as an actor in mainstream movies seems limited to this kind of fare, which is a shame.

Nevertheless, he’s still out there cranking out VOD movies, with Boneyard being the latest.

Bandit is a relatable antihero driven by money and fun, not forgiveness. Sheriff Buford T. Justice's stupidity and idiocy make him lovably funny. Smokey and the Bandit combines impressive stunts with hilarious, memorable lines.

As one of the biggest comedy movies of the 1970s, there are endless Smokey and the Bandit quotes that solidify its legacy. Maverick Film and Complex Corp have acquired “Murder Company,” an action film set during World War II. The film will be released in theaters, on demand and digital on July 5.

Comedy docuseries “The World’s Strangest Jobs,” from Johannesburg-based Mannequin Pictures, one of South Africa’s key production, finance, and distribution companies, has sold to Prime Video the rights to the African continent.

Mannequin is now pursuing sales in all other territories. The eight-part series is hosted by comedian and actor Schalk Bezuidenhout. The popular South African comic, a household name in his country of birth, balances Safta winning acting work (“Hotel”) with his bread and butter as a comic. Signature Entertainment has acquired the action comedy London Calling, starring Josh Duhamel (Transformers franchise), from Highland Film Group for release in the U.K. and Ireland.

The feature film also stars Jeremy Ray Taylor (It), Rick Hoffman (Suits) and Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones).

Signature said it plans to release the movie in early 2025.

Australia’s Causeway Films, which recently produced A24 hit Talk To Me, is opening a new office in London and has appointed Daniel Negret as chief executive officer.

Negret joins from film financier Head Gear Films where he served as chief operating officer since June 2021. During his tenure, he oversaw the company’s involvement in over 60 projects including Talk To Me, How To Have Sex and Bandit as well as helping build Head Gear’s financial packaging and executive producing arm.

Causeway Films, the Australian film production house behind recent breakout “Talk to Me,” has opened a U.K. operation.

The company has hired Daniel Negret, formerly of Head Gear Films, as its CEO.

Causeway Films was established by producers Kristina Ceyton and Samantha Jennings in 2014, launching with Jennifer Kent’s Sundance hit “The Babadook.” It followed that by producing Kent’s follow up feature “The Nightingale,” which won the special jury prize at the Venice Film Festival in 2019.

Innovative horror film, “Talk to Me,” from filmmaking duo Danny and Michael Philippou screened in Sundance, Berlin and SXSW 2023 and was acquired by A24. It became A24’s top genre release in North America with a box office of $48.1 million to date, taking the film’s global box office to over $89 million.

Exclusive: Coming off the breakout box office performance of horror hit Talk To Me, Australian production company Causeway Films has expanded internationally opening a London office and appointing Daniel Negret as its Chief Executive Officer.

Negret will take up the role on October 30th and be based in London, with frequent visits to Australia and LA.

Negret joins from prolific UK film financier Head Gear Films, where he served as the company’s Chief Operating Officer overseeing operations including production finance, strategy, business development, legal and business affairs and marketing.

During his time at Head Gear, the Colombian-born exec oversaw the financier’s involvement in more than 60 productions, including Talk To Me, How To Have Sex and Bandit. Negret also helped create the company’s financial packaging and executive-producing arm. He previously worked at Ingenious, Olsberg Spi and Merrill Lynch, and recently wrote and produced horror feature Shaman in Ecuador.
