Studio Lambert has introduced the world to Gogglebox, Race Across the World and The Circle but the indie has faced its greatest test in Netflix’s Squid Game: The Challenge, and the road has been a bit of a bumpy one.
Stephen Lambert’s 15-year-old British production house, which its founder says is having its busiest year following a strategic shift to “go big” on premium unscripted, took on its grandest undertaking when Netflix gave it the weighty reins to the Squid Game competition series.

Exclusive: On-the-block super-indie All3Media saw revenues rocket to £1B ($1.3B) last year, as accounts reveal it has taken majority voting control of The Traitors producer Studio Lambert.
According to a Companies House filing for the outfit’s holding company Dlg Acquisitions, All3Media boosted sales by 17% for the 2022 calendar year, with revenues just topping the £1B mark.
Ebitda shot up by a similar proportion to £100M and total group operating profit was up from £26M to £40M. In 2022, All3Media produced more than 4,000 hours of programing including the likes of The Traitors, The Tinder Swindler and The Tourist.
The group said the “current macro-economic climate including the continued impact of Covid-19 and the impact of inflation presents a risk and challenge,” however.
The issue is being managed by “reviewing production protocols and analysing opportunities to produce content more efficiently,” amongst other approaches, it added.

The end came abruptly for David Walliams’ tenure on Britain’s Got Talent. The comedian and children’s author served as a judge on the ITV reality series for a decade, until vulgar remarks he had allegedly made about certain contestants came to light via The Guardian in November 2022. In one instance, Walliams referred to an elderly contestant as a “c**t” multiple times; in another, he described a female contestant as “the slightly boring girl you meet in the pub that thinks you want to f*** them, but you don’t”. Walliams apologised at the time, stating that the insults were lifted from “private conversations with friends” and “were never intended to be shared”.

Race Across the World returned to screens last night (22 March), with fans taking to social media to praise the series despite one major change.
The adventure-themed reality show, which has moved from BBC Two to BBC One for its current third series, sees five teams attempt to travel as far as they can without smartphones, internet access or credit cards, and armed only with the cash equivalent of the airfare to fly the route.
While the teams usually travel across several countries, this time, they are racing 16,000km through the second largest country on the planet – Canada. This is because the series was filmed last year, when the world was still opening up after the pandemic.
The five pairs must race across the breadth of Canada, passing through seven checkpoints, taking them from the Pacific coastline, to the edges of the Arctic and the shores of the Great Lakes, to...

“Love Island,” a British reality show featuring young singletons courting each other in a hot location, suddenly seems to be cooling off.
Returning to ITV2 last week, and debuting on Hulu on Jan. 30, the winter series reportedly attracted just over 1.4 million viewers for its debut episode, down a million from its previous season opener. Meanwhile, “Love Island Aftersun,” a spin-off chat show now hosted by Maya Jama, reportedly had more overnight viewers than the main show that preceded it.
Now, it’s worth noting that when ITV aired a winter “Love Island” in 2019, the initial ratings also dipped, leading some critics and pundits to write the show off. And yet, four years later, the grafting and mugging-offs continue unabated. ITV bosses are also still likely to be satisfied by the numbers. Exclusive: The wait to discover the next BBC Factual, Arts and Classical Music director is to go on a little while longer.
In a dramatic U-turn, the BBC has notified the final candidates that none have been successful and Chief Content Officer Charlotte Moore is now reconsidering the very nature of the role, Deadline understands, with no firm decision made as of yet.
The news was one of the hot topics at Sunday’s BAFTA afterparty, at which big names from the UK factual world were present, with Steve McQueen’s BBC One series Uprising winning Best Factual Series at the glitzy event.
We understand the final four candidates were notified very recently following a process that has taken several months after the revealed departure late last year of former incumbent Patrick Holland to production powerhouse Banijay.

Exclusive: The BBC is hoping to get Studio Lambert’s Race Across the World and its celebrity version – one of the highest-profile early casualties of the pandemic-inducted production pause – back into filming “as soon as possible” despite Omicron fears.
A casting call was issued recently for contributors to “take on the challenge of traveling thousands of miles, at ground level, across land and sea” in the third season of the non-celebrity version and it is understood producers are pushing ahead amidst growing case numbers of the Omicron variant, which has caused restrictions to be tightened around the world.
The casting call referenced Covid-19 and questioned whether the “restrictions of the pandemic may have sparked the wanderlust” of potential contributors.
It is understood that the non-celebrity version will enter pre-production first, with the casting process taking longer for that version, which tends to attract thousands of applicants.
A BBC spokeswoman said:...

Banijay UK has swiftly replaced Executive Chair Peter Salmon with BBC Factual director Patrick Holland.
Holland will join at the start of Q2 next year, following Salmon’s departure after six years with the firm and one as Executive Chair.
Holland has been with the BBC for more than a decade, most recently operating as Director of Factual, Arts and Classical Music in the new commissioning restructure, having overseen BBC2 for several years before that.
He oversaw an impressive transformation of BBC2 that saw it move into popular factual-entertainment such as Race Across The World and its celebrity counterpart, along with respected documentaries and heavy-hitting drama including Richard Gere’s MotherFatherSon.

Michaela Coel’s BBC/HBO series I May Destroy You was the big winner at the UK’s Broadcasting Press Guild Awards on Friday.
The limited series, about a woman piecing together the events of her sexual assault, won Best Drama Series, beating competition from the likes of BBC/Hulu series Normal People and Sky’s I Hate Suzie. Coel also walked away with Best Actress and Best Writer.
Collecting her gongs, Coel said: “Receiving this from the Broadcasting Press Guild is particularly meaningful to me, because this is awarded by journalists, the best of which scrutinize the topic, their opinion of it, and interrogate both the world and themselves, as writers within it. I can identify with this, particularly because I May Destroy You was inspired by my own experiences of sexual assault.”

Winter is the new fall this Covid-impacted TV season. Because of the lengthy production shutdown in the first months of the coronavirus pandemic, Fox and the CW delayed the rollout of their regular fall 2020 lineups, and a slew of other series intended for fall 2020 debut also are slated to premiere in early 2021 instead.
With uncertainty surrounding production as Covid outbreaks frequently pause filming, a number of premiere dates are still Tbd, as networks and streamers often wait until last minute to set debuts so they are sure than the new seasons would be completed successfully.
That said, here’s our annual list of midseason/winter premiere dates for new and returning series. It covers hundreds of broadcast, cable and streaming programs debuting from today through March 31 and includes shows that were on hiatus and some one-off specials such as awards shows.
Please send any additions or adjustments to erik@deadline.

Warner’s HBO Max Bombshell
Warner’s seismic strategy: Gravity-defying news from the U.S. overnight, where WarnerMedia announced that it’s going to dump its entire 2021 theatrical slate on HBO Max at the same time as the films screen in cinemas. That means movies including Matrix 4, Godzilla vs. Kong, Dune, and Denzel Washington’s The Little Things will be all be available to Americans from the comfort of their sofa. There were murmurs at rival studios that WarnerMedia was going to drop a bombshell in December — no one knew it would be this big.

Discovery made headlines yesterday with its launch plans for its global streaming service Discovery+.

For the occasion, actors gathered around their computers for a virtual award ceremony, hosted by the brilliant Richard Ayoade. Chernobyl bagged three awards: best actor for Jared Harris, best miniseries, and best costume design thanks to Odile Dicks-Mireaux. Stath Lets Flats also took home three awards: Jamie Demetriou for male performance in comedy program, scripted comedy, and comedy writer. The smash hit Gavin and Stacey Nessa Proposes to Smithy special won Virgin Media's must-see moment (voted for by the public) - here's hoping they don't leave us on that cliffhanger for too much longer.

The BBC plans to resume production on “EastEnders” and “Top Gear” by the “end of next month,” the broadcaster’s content director Charlotte Moore said.
There will be a scaled-down approach on set to stay within government guidelines, including no professional hair and makeup.
“We’ve been looking very carefully at how we can safely put some of our shows back into production, and I’m pleased to announce that we plan to begin filming again on both ‘EastEnders’ and ‘Top Gear’ by the end of next month,” Moore wrote Thursday in a blog post. “We’re also exploring ways to re-start filming on more dramas and other major BBC shows as soon as possible.”
“This is great news for viewers, but it’s also essential for the success of the many independent companies around the country who make these programmes and who have felt the economic shockwaves of this pandemic,...

As coronavirus begins to take hold in the U.K., broadcasters and streamers are grappling with strategies to fight the outbreak, with work-from-home policies being rolled out across the board while question marks hang over some of the country’s biggest studio and live shows.
Variety has confirmed the BBC is going ahead for the time being with live tapings of its programs, but concern around gathering audiences in close quarters are proving to be a major headache for broadcasters such as ITV, whose live variety show “Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway” is currently facing a range of contingency plans.
Elsewhere, Netflix U.K. has so far kept its Oxford Circus offices open for business, though staff have the option of working from home. Meanwhile, Amazon — as per directives out of U.S. headquarters — has enacted work-from-home measures that will remain in place until the end of March.

Exclusive: Britain’s major broadcasters have spent recent days drawing up coronavirus plans, as the spread of the disease threatens to wreak havoc on production schedules and disrupt major events.
Deadline understands the likes of the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 are giving serious thought to how Covid-19 could put in-house and independent producers at risk, and are considering whether to pull the plug on or delay certain shows. One person familiar with the thinking said there has been “mild panic” as TV has woken up to coronavirus, and the broadcasters stressed they are closely monitoring Public Health England and World Health Organization advice.
The BBC has been reviewing shows that are about to start filming, according to various sources, and is giving thought to productions that involve international filming, big crowds or live audiences. It comes as coronavirus has infected 92,000 people worldwide, claiming the lives of 3,000.
