Leatherface may soon be revving the chainsaw back up. Word is that different parties are pursuing a potential reboot of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and one possibility would see Glen Powell in a lead role.
Per Deadline, a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie is in the planning stages at Verve, the company holding the rights to the IP since 2017. There are different pitches reportedly in consideration, including one package that could bring together Powell with filmmaker Jt Mollner and producer Roy Lee. Mollner and Lee recently worked on the horror hit Strange Darling, which holds a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes after its release last year. According to the report, Powell is interested in reading the script if Mollner can get one written, potentially putting him into position as the film's star.
Nothing is set in stone just yet, so there are no guarantees Powell will next be facing off with Leatherface.

Another longstanding intellectual property’s rights have hit the market, drawing up major interest from producers and studios.
The day after it was revealed that WME was shopping the rights to Jason Bourne and titles from the Robert Ludlum estate comes word that the rights to venerated horror franchise The Texas Chainsaw Massacre are also available.
And while there is significant amount of interest from several parties, it’s quite in early in the process to determine who is involved and where it will land. But the participation of some bold-faced names — Texas’ favorite golden boy Glen Powell, anyone? — has some talking about a “free for all.”
Legendary Pictures had held the rights to the property since 2017 and made a movie in 2022 that streamed on Netflix. A sequel never materialized, despite hopes. The IP returned to the rights holders – Exurbia Films, which is run by Pat Cassidy, the original movie’s co-screenwriter Kim Henkel,...

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise could be getting yet another reboot. Deadline reports that Verve, who currently represents the rights, have studios and filmmakers eager to pitch a new take on the iconic horror franchise.
“Verve represents The Texas Chainsaw Massacre estate and is building out a multimedia strategy for the seminal horror franchise,” said a Verve representative in a statement to Deadline. “Verve has not officially submitted the property into any filmmakers, producers, or buyers. Because this is such a hot and iconic horror property, packages are preemptively being brought to Verve.“
According to Deadline’s report, writer/director Jt Mollner (Strange Darling) and producer Roy Lee (It) are among the interested parties. One intriguing tidbit is that once Mollner puts his script together, Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick) is reportedly keen to read it, with an eye towards starring in and producing the project. Lionsgate, A24, and Neon are also in the mix.

Exclusive: Studios and filmmakers are knocking on Verve’s door as the agency is sitting on bloody good IP that they’re looking to take on the town: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Verve has repped the rights for the slasher series created by Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel since 2017.
At a time when horror and franchises are really the only surefire bets at the post-Covid and strike-impacted box office, the 51-year-old horror property about a chainsaw-wielding serial killer still has potential to make a killing.
One of the parties, we hear, showing interest in reviving Texas Chainsaw Massacre is filmmaker/scribe Jt Mollner and producer Roy Lee, hot off Strange Darling, their $3 million-grossing, 96% certified Rotten Tomatoes cult hit. If Mollner gets a script together, word is that Glen Powell would like to read it. It’s very early days on this; no contracts or attachments as of yet, and the...

The 1970s was a formative and substantial decade for movies. The '70s saw the rise to prominence of some of the most influential filmmakers of all time, including Steven Spielbergand Martin Scorsese. Indie horror exploded onto the scene with genre-defining efforts such as Halloween and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Jaws essentially birthed the very concept of a blockbuster in 1975, changing the film landscape as a whole.

Mappa is one of the top-tier animation giants in the anime industry that gave us iconic series. From Chainsaw Man to Kids on the Slope, they worked on a diverse range of anime. It was only after Jujutsu Kaisen that their finesse was spotlighted, but the anime might have to wait for its third season.

Mainly because the studio is all set to release Shinichiro Watanabe’s upcoming series. The Cowboy Bebop animator is back with yet another banger and it looks surprising in most senses. As for third season’s prolonged release, I see no issues with the delay and here’s why.
Mappa’s delay of Jujutsu Kaisen’s third season is valid

The horror film genre has been a source of entertainment in the film world for more than a century. Originating in the 1890s, it has evolved numerous times throughout history and often reflects societal sentiments stemming from world events. As time has progressed, horror has reinterpreted fear and grief through intense imagery, subtly instilling new anxieties in the audience.
Occasionally, a film emerges that redefines the entire genre. It could create a new subgenre or simply produce a landmark film that sets the standard for all that follows. Amidst the vast array of horror films, here are some of the most influential titles in the genre.

As of this writing, there have been nine film in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre series. Tobe Hooper's 1974 original, "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre," remains one of the best horror films of all time, dredging the audiences through violence and filth that has rarely been matched on the big screen. Hooper's film feels dingy and oily, and if it was made and edited by the cannibal hillbillies it features.
The many sequels are of dubious canonical value. The series features multiple reboots and reshaping of the continuity, with at least three that restart/reboot the franchise, or that serve as direct sequels to the original. Only the central concept remains: In the wilds of rural Texas, a remote Sawyer clan has been cut off from civilization, relying on cannibalism (and possibly incest) to survive, and a group of unsuspecting cityfolk drive through the Sawyer family's property and are attacked,...

The 1981 film Love Massacre (Ai Sha) was a jarring shift in genre for Patrick Tam. After making his directorial debut with wuxia outing The Sword, Tam returned with a tale of drama and horror. Now, to the uninitiated, this collaboration between Tam and writer Joyce Chan — they would work together again — seems like the furthest thing from horror; the film’s first half is an attractive but somewhat aimless tune about the pangs of romance, the uncertainty of life, and the toils of obligation. Once you reach the other side of this cinematic compromise between arthouse and commercial, though, it becomes clear why Love Massacre has amassed such a cult following over the years.
In the vein of horror films where expats and tourists discover peril overseas, Love Massacre chronicles the grisly misfortune of several Chinese international students. Shot in California, the film begins with a foreshadowing sign of things...

"We are trying to finish this film, but our actors & crew keep disappearing." A wacky trailer is out for an indie horror film creation called The WeedHacker Massacre, which will be premiering later this month at the 2025 Golden State Film Festival in Los Angeles, CA. Comedy and horror as a doomed film crew tries to remake another horror remake. A meta horror riff on trying to make indie horror film where more horror happens. Created Allen Danziger, and directed by Jody Stelzig. A horror comedy about the college student Willie Wonder who drove 13 coeds out to the Earth Wind Music Fest in Red Eye, the illegal weed capital of Texas. Protected by his amazing Jheri-Curl hair, he survives after being shot in the head. Here I am once more, potentially defending something that is much maligned as a catastrophic fail. I often find myself having to do that for films, (sequels especially) that did not find a collective acceptance among its target audience. Friday the 13th part 5, Halloween 3, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, just to name a few. “Cursed” stands alone, but still made a difficult road for itself by being part of a genre that has had its share of epic triumphs and hard disappointments. Werewolf films have broken new ground with “An American Werewolf in London” with its landmark special effects, and “The Howling” with...

Last year, just before Halloween, I wrote a list titled the Greatest Comedy Horrors. There were many omissions, oversights and even more films that I just hadn’t heard of before as recommended by you, the reader. Last time it was about the greatest, no such ambition is being upheld this time, a lot of these films barely scrape into the good category. Their appearance is merely on how successfully they merge the two genres. This year, I will be posting a list of movies, broke into five separate articles. This is the first.
There is a very narrow line that divides finding something the scary and the funny. No greater example of this are the league of horror films that try to scare but only evoke laughter. With more intentional comedy, there are two ways you can address this cross pollination. The first and the much more popular route is comedy about horror,...

Some movies you just can’t recommend enough, and some you see once and can’t believe that they get this much hype. I can think of dozens of films killed by all the positive buzz that turns off the audience and builds up expectations that simply can’t be met. I loved The Cabin In The Woods but I got sick of hearing everyone saying how good it was, especially me. Yea, it was damned good, but it didn’t change cinema or reinvent the wheel.
The Loved Ones (Starring Stars: Xavier Samuel, Robin McLeavy and Victoria Thaine) also isn’t going to change the way we see movies, but I’ll be damned if it didn’t make me stand up and take notice. Shot a few years ago in Australia and slowly released on overseas DVD, this is so much more than the sum of its parts.

Bette Davis, Joan Blondell, Ann Dvorak, Three on a Match Ann Dvorak on TCM Part I: Scarface, I Was An American Spy Another cool Ann Dvorak performance is her drug addict in Mervyn LeRoy's Three on a Match (1932), which features a great cast that includes Warren William, Joan Blondell, and a pre-stardom Bette Davis. Never, ever light three cigarettes using the same match, or you'll end up like Ann Dvorak, delivering a harrowing performance without getting an Academy Award nomination for your efforts. As Three on a Match's young Ann Dvorak, future Oscar nominee Anne Shirley is billed as Dawn O'Day. The daughter of silent-film actress Anna Lehr and director Edward McKim, Ann Dvorak began her film career at the dawn of the sound era. The pretty, wide-eyed Dvorak was one of those performers who not only could but should have become major stars — yet, thanks to studio politics, didn't. Those unfamiliar with Dvorak's name and/or work will be able to check her out all day Tuesday, August 9, on Turner Classic Movies. TCM will be presenting 16 of her films. [Ann Dvorak Movie Schedule.] Considering that TCM generally picks the usual suspects for their "Summer Under the Stars" film series — people like Marlon Brando, Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, Bette Davis — I find it refreshing when they select someone like Ann Dvorak. Of course, as a Warner Bros. player in the '30s, most of Dvorak's best work has been frequently available on TCM; but to have a whole day devoted to an actress most people...
