Michael Caine has mentioned "Un carnet de bal' among his favorite movies.
Dance cards were popular in Europe, especially during the 19th and early 20th centuries, most commonly at formal balls and other classy events that involved dancing. These typically consisted of a small book that was kept by women to list the men to whom she promised a dance during the evening. Also listed were the musical numbers to be played by the orchestra, and it was common for gentlemen to ask women to dance by indicating a preferred song on the program. Dance cards, often saved by women as mementos from the ball, might have had elaborately decorated covers, and could even have taken the form of hand-held folding fans, where songs and names were written on the paper between the slats. "Carnet" by itself translates to "notebook" but "carnet de bal" was the familiar term for "dance card."
