To mark the release of Creeping Horror on 17th April, we’ve been given a special edition Blu-ray to give away to 3 winners.
Four more tales of terror from the vaults of Universal Pictures, starring Lionel Atwill, Bela Lugosi, and Rondo Hatton.
A maniacal hunter and collector of wild animals uses them to dispose of rivals and enemies in the shockingly violent Murders in the Zoo (dir. A. Edward Sutherland, 1933). Bela Lugosi stars in a creepy tale of strange characters, secret passages and a murderer who masters the art of “mind over matter” in Night Monster (dir. Ford Beebe, 1942).
What started out as a treasure-making scheme ends up deadly for a group of people stuck in a haunted castle with a killer known as “the Phantom” in Horror Island (dir. George Waggner, 1941). And finally, Rondo Hatton is “the Creeper”, a giant of a man used as an instrument of evil...

Constantine: The House of Mystery is essentially a series of previously released DC animated shorts tied together with an all-new short based on the adventures of John Constantine in the titular House of Mystery (which was also the name of a DC comic back in the day that introduced the likes of Swamp Thing). Surprisingly, the animated short is actually set after the last series of DC animated movies, before the recent reboot in 2020, when the Justice League faced Darkseid and the Apokolips War and ended the then 15-movie run of animated DC features.
Constantine: The House of Mystery starts directly after the end of Justice League Dark: Apokolips War, with the heroes licking their wounds and realising the end of the world was still nigh.

To celebrate its release, we’re giving three lucky winners a copy of the new collection of DC Animated shorts, Constantine – The House Of Mystery on Blu-Ray!
The new DC Showcase line of animated shorts elevates the beloved characters Constantine, Kamandi, The Losers, and Blue Beetle. In the anchoring short, John Constantine wakes up in the eerie House of Mystery with no recollection of how he got there. Fortunately, Zatanna and his friends are all there. Unfortunately, they have a bad habit of turning into demons and ripping him to shreds, over and over again!
Matt Ryan reprises his live-action and animated role as the Hellblazer himself in Constantine – The House of Mystery. Camilla Luddington (Grey’s Anatomy) and Ray Chase (Licorice Pizza) reprise their roles as Zatanna and Jason Blood/Etrigan, respectively. The shorts are directed by Matt Reeves (Constantine – The House of Mystery and Kamandi: The Last Boy On Earth!

I’ve always had a great appreciation and fondness for horror anthologies, and I devoured horror comics as a kid; whether it was House of Mystery or Creepy magazine, they never failed to fire my imagination in short, sharp bursts. When the Romero/King collaboration Creepshow (1982) came out, my dream of seeing these kinds of stories translated to film was nothing but revelatory. I soon discovered it was not the first of its ilk, and began a journey through dusty video store shelves looking for its long-lost relatives. One of my first (and favorite) finds was Vault of Horror (1973), a five-fingered punch to my nascent, pubescent, omnibus-loving heart.
Released by Cinerama Releasing stateside in March and produced by Amicus (the fine folks behind its predecessor, Tales from the Crypt), Vault of Horror (aka The Vault of Horror, for the easily confused, I guess) was not as well received by critics as Tales,...

His illustrations may have caused you to dread the next full moon, avoid the swamp on your shortcut home, or ignite your imagination with a peek into the post-apocalypse. Through his artwork, Bernie Wrightson has influenced and inspired generations of horror fans, so it is with great sadness that we inform readers that the prolific artist has passed away at the age of 68 after a long battle with brain cancer.
Wrightson's wife, Liz, shared the somber news of her husband's passing earlier today on the artist's official website and Facebook page.
A fan of EC Comics growing up, Bernie Wrightson, aka "Berni," began working on projects for both DC and Marvel early in his career, co-creating the complex character Swamp Thing with writer Len Wein in the early ’70s. Bernie later worked for Warren Publishing, where he helped bring H.P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe stories to life on the paneled page.

The concept of the DC Comics’ mystical characters gathering to combat occult evil always sounds good but of course, execution is everything. When it was done sparingly, as in Swamp Thing #50, it was quite effective. As an ongoing series, it proved tough to manage since each player was plucked from a title that had a fairly unique look and feel.
That said, the newly released animated Justice League Dark film is incredibly entertaining and certainly a cut above the last half-dozen releases. From a story by Jld writer J.M. DeMatteis and Ernie Altbacker, Altbacker’s script shifts the super-heroic DC Universe to supernatural threats that Superman (Jerry O’Connell), Wonder Woman (Rosario Dawson), Green Lantern (Roger Cross) and the others are less equipped to handle. Altbacker is no stranger to heroes and magicians with credits including Spooksville and Green Lantern: The Animated Series and he does a fine job weaving the various threads.

Check out the new clip from tomorrow's Us premiere of Justice League Action. Constantine, Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman arrive at the House of Mystery and they're joined by Green Arrow, Swamp Thing and Plastic Man. This is a pretty powerful team but they're going against foes that have the ability to nullify their abilities. Perhaps a team of non super-powered vigilantes like the Dark Knight and Emerald Archer are better suited for the task? We also have these official stills from WB Animation which reveal the Djinn that our heroes will be teaming up to stop. Will you be tuning in to the premiere, tomorrow at 6pm on Cartoon Network? Be sure to visit Cbm later today for my full review of the premiere. The world’s greatest DC Super Heroes are heading to Cartoon Network in the premiere of Justice League Action, an all-new animated series that will kick off with “Shazam Slam,...

Well well well it looks as if DC's Dark Universe hasn't been scrapped, after all. In fact, it's looking like production will be moving swiftly if their new producer has anything to say about it.
A few months ago, writer/director, Guillermo Del Toro walked away from this project in favor of the now indefinitely delayed Pacific Rim 2. As soon as that happened, most of the movie world thought that DC's Dark Universe, aka Justice League Dark, would be just another great idea that failed to come to fruition. However, all is not lost.
Enter producer-extraordinaire Scott Rudin who's resume consists of The Truman Show, No Country For Old Men, The Social Network, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Captain Phillips, Ex Machina, and the recently finished Zoolander 2, among many others. With a resume like his, it's a small wonder why Warner Bros. has tabbed Rudin to work on this movie.

Surprisingly, vampires lead the pack this year, along with found footage flicks, but there are a few comedies, one remake and even some strange love stories as well… read the full article.

Constantine, Season 1, Episode 8: “The Saint of Last Resorts”
Written by Carly Wray
Directed by T.J. Scott
Airs Fridays at 10 pm Et on NBC
“The Saint of Last Resorts” breaks the mold of a lot of previous Constantine episodes, which partially set up the character of John Constantine (Matt Ryan) as some kind of cynical, occult superhero instead of the hell-bound bastard and con-man from the Hellblazer comics. Instead of having Constantine initiate the case of the week with Zed’s (Angelica Celaya) scrying, this time he gets a call from his magic tutor, old flame, and member of the Newcastle crew Anne-Marie (Claire van der Boom), who has seen a baby snatched by a supernatural force. Because this is personal, John leaves Zed on her own at the House of Mystery, giving her first solo plotline to show how she has grown as a character, along with revealing a...

Constantine, Season 1, Episode 3: “The Devil’s Vinyl”
Written by David Goyer and Mark Verheiden
Directed by Romeo Tirone
Airs Fridays at 10 pm Et on NBC
The character of John Constantine is rooted in music as much as he is in magic or being a con artist. Before he was master of the dark arts, he was the frontman for Liverpool punk outfit Mucous Membrane. (Which gets a much needed shout out in this episode.) Even before he was fully fledged and named character, he was a guy in the background of Swamp Thing #25, who artist Stephen Bissette wanted to look like Sting. But enough of the origin story stuff. “The Devil’s Vinyl” is the strongest episode of Constantine to date as David Goyer and Mark Verheiden construct a plot filled with the trickery, double crosses, soul bartering, and exorcisms that were the Hellblazer comic’s stock and trade,...

I'm not saying Halcyon International's Still Night Monster Movies have been slow to materialize but they're just now getting around to the second, third, and fourth films in the series and I'm fairly certain I first reported on these way back in 2010.
Dracula Reborn was the film that launched Halcyon International's attempt to recapture the old school magic of classic monsters movies with their "Still Night Monster Movies" label. Let's just say it came and went with little fanfare. Not entirely the fault of the film seeing as how Halcyon doesn't really do much to help promote their films.
I'm about to tell you about three new films they have coming out but I can't tell you who wrote, directed, or stars in (with one exception) any of them because the company doesn't bother with such matters on their website.
So the second film in the series is The Mummy Resurrected.

It has been dismissed over the years as cheesy, cheap and laughable but, as has been the case on many occasions, Hammer Films have had the last laugh. They boast a back-catalogue that is to horror movies what The Rolling Stones’ discography is to rock music. Fifty-nine years after the release of their first horror movie proper (The Quatermass Xperiment), Hammer’s films have survived scrutiny and re-evaluation and have now attained National Treasure status. Moreover, in terms of sheer importance, the Hammer films were some of the most influential of the past half-century. The ripple-effect of their imitators cashing in on their success would beget the careers of some of the biggest names in Hollywood today.
And yet since 1984 Hammer has been a dormant entity, existing only in the memory: a pile of ashes, a cape and a signet ring waiting to be reanimated by the crimson, jugular discharge of some poor,...

Even though she was never a writer or artist, Karen Berger is one of the most influential people in comics. She has won three Eisner Awards for Best Editor and singlehandedly created the Vertigo imprint for DC Comics while recruiting some of comics’ greatest talents to work for DC (Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, Neil Gaiman). By the end of the 1980s, the books she edited (Swamp Thing, Hellblazer, The Sandman, Shade, the Changing Man, Animal Man) became the “Berger-verse”, whicheventually turned into the Vertigo imprint. Existing on the edges of the DC Universe and later becoming mainly creator owned books, Vertigo was a place where talented creators had relative freedom to create comics of any genre from horror (Hellblazer), fantasy (Books of Magic), crime (100 Bullets), modern day fairy tales (Fables), or even books that transcend genre boundaries, like Sandman, The Invisibles, or Preacher. During her 20 year tenure as executive editor of Vertigo,...

Writers: Geoff Johns, Jeff Lemire
Penciller: Doug Mahnke
Inkers: Christian Alamy, Keith Champagne, Doug Mahnke, Marc Deering, Walden Wong
Colorists: Nathan Eyring, Pete Pantazis, Gabe Eltaeb
Publisher: DC Comics
After the events of last issue which was full of conflict between different superheroes and involved a lot of switching teams, Jla #7 decided to slow down the pace. The last third of the comic moves the plot quickly and sets up an even bigger conflict that the earlier ones. But Jla #7 is mostly characters wandering around and reaching dead ends. However, Jeff Lemire and Geoff Johns use this traveling time to explore different characters in “Trinity War” that haven’t been fleshed out. Element Woman, Atom, Martian Manhunter, and Simon Baz are the recipients of this character development. Even though five inkers and three colorists are credited on this issue, Doug Mahnke gets to draw a few beautiful spreads and fight scenes.

With Scott Snyder’s Batman Year Zero origin story beginning a new arc on his run of Batman this week, we thought we would look back to our own origin stories, tracing back to how we entered into the world of comics. Sure, the Sound On Sight comics team may not have origin stories as epic as some of the superheroes out there, but going back is a great way to look at how we were all introduced to comics, and why we write about them today. Here’s how it all began…
A Toxic Beginning

I remember the plucking of my comic book virginity well. Easter of 1991, a scrawny nine year old version of myself, Ghostbusters and Star Wars obsessed and well on his way to becoming a full-fledged geek finds his first comic book in one of his Easter baskets. Ok, enough talking about myself in the third person.

We live in a media world that has been oversaturated with vampires; particularly in recent years, as the young adult fiction market seems to have blossomed into an excuse for girls to be whisked away by creatures of the night. It’s ruined the entire concept of vampirism, really; with very few exceptions in cinema or literature.
Thank the gods we have comics to remind us that even when it comes to a monster as overused as the vampire, there are still stories to be told, if done well. I give you three examples from this week’s hefty load of quality material.
I, Vampire #19
Story: Joshua Hale Fialkov
Art: Fernando Blanco & Andrea Sorrentino
Why It Works: Narrative intelligence. The problem with a lot of vampire stories is that they focus entirely on the state of vampirism without venturing outside of it to bring in antagonists or storylines that might feature well otherwise.

Don’t panic. Stephen Sommers hasn’t made another Mummy movie. The Mummy: Resurrected is a new low budget creature feature designed to be in the vein of the classic Universal mummy movies of old.
But just between you and me, it kind of looks like something The Asylum would have produced nearly a decade ago.
It was almost two years ago when Halycon International Pictures announced a slate of films based on classic horror characters under the “Famous Monsters of Filmland” banner. Something must have fallen through with the makers of the magazine that also bears that title because the slate of films was redubbed the “Still Night Monster Movies Series”.

Dread Central has discovered, that perhaps the “world’s most haunted” house in the world, the Winchester House of Mystery in San Jose, CA is letting its spooky story be put to film. Hammer, a subsidiary of Exclusive Media, a company that produced The Woman In Black and Ides Of March, is the studio set to turn the wacky story of Sarah Winchester and her quest to never-stop-building into a movie. The place is a creepy tourist trap, and sure has a fun and “true” story behind it, and could be an enjoyable horror film. Hopefully it’s not just a move made purely for marketing purposes, though that would hardly be surprising. It is Hollywood.

It’s that time again… okay, it’s a little past that normal time, thanks to the Mix March Madness wrapup, but here are the preview materials for DC Comics releases for July 2012.
What’s on tap this month? More of the Before Watchmen books, with the debut of Ozymandias from Len Wein and Jae Lee, the conclusion of the Court of Owls storyline and crossover in all the Bat-books, and the debut of the done-in-one book, National Comics, featuring the New 52 Debut (coming right at you) of Eternity.
And in the white elephant of desire category, there’s the $300 statue showing the climactic scene from The Dark Knight Returns.
Once more, into the breach? Banzai!
As always, spoilers may lurk beyond this point.

After making quite a name for himself in creator-owned comics, such as the creepily claustrophic Elk’S Run and the descent-into-madness tale Echoes, Josh Fialkov is now making room for horror in DC’s New 52 and flirting with science fiction in Idw’s Doctor Who series. We got to talking about vampires and their role in the new Dcu, as well as people’s changing perceptions of vampires in general (which of course you can read more about in Famous Monsters Of Filmland 261). And as Fialkov indicates, you can certainly read more and more of his darkly-leaning stories on the comic racks these days…
Famous Monsters. So tell me about I, Vampire. Do think this is the first time DC has ever so prominently featured horror characters in its major titles?
Joshua Hale Fialkov. Well, there’s a rich history of horror at DC, back to the House of Mystery and House of Secrets stuff,...

One of the perhaps lesser known vampire sagas of the last twenty-five years is I…Vampire, writer J. M. DeMatteis's comic about a vampire lord and his lover/rival that ran in DC's House of Mystery from 1981 to 1983. As part of its "New 52", DC has just relaunched the comic, with writer Joshua Hale Fialkov and artist Andrea Sorrentino, to positive reviews. After the jump, learn what Fialkov considers the top 5 vampire sagas of all time. "1.) I'm gonna cheat and say Richard Matheson's I Am Legend. Technically they're vampires. Barely, but technically they're vampires. And then 2.) Buffy and Angel. I'll even lump those two together. 3.) The Lost Boys. I'm crazy about Lost Boys....

The patron comic book of Monday Mix-Up has always been The Brave And The Bold, a comic book that delighted in mashing up weird combinations of characters, usually Batman with characters that made almost no sense to combine with, like Deadman, Kamandi, Jonah Hex, Sgt. Rock, Adam Strange, Lois Lane, Scalphunter, the Legion of Super-Heroes, the Unknown Soldier, the Guardians of the Universe, the Joker, R’as al Ghul, and the House of Mystery. This tradition has been carried on in the TV series Batman: The Brave And The Bold, which has included many of those combinations and added Space Ghost to boot.
But for some, those combinations just aren’t going far enough. For those, we present The Brave And The Bold: The Lost Issues. Now you can find the missing team-ups with Batman and Jack Bauer, Iron Man 2020, Spider-Man 2099, Harvey Birdman, Groo, Galactus, Dirty Harry, Darth Vader, and Adam West.

In the latest of our comprehensive series of reviews of DC Comics' 52 relaunched titles, we take a look at I, Vampire #1. Who's it by?
I, Vampire #1 is written by Joshua Hale Fialkov (Echoes) and drawn by Andrea Sorrentino (God of War). What's the history?
The star of I, Vampire is Lord Andrew Bennett, a man from the 16th century who was transformed into one of the undead but swore to himself never to relinquish his humanity. He was introduced in issue #290 of DC's horror comic House of Mystery in 1981, invented by Jm DeMatteis and Tom Sutton. His primary antagonist was Mary, Queen of Blood, who had been his mortal lover but was corrupted when he transformed her into a vampire. The 'I... Over the last few years, "Doctor Who" fans have seen their favorite Time Lord tackle alien menaces from one end of history to the other, but in a new miniseries kicking off next week, The Eleventh Doctor and Amy Pond take a page from your favorite fables.
Appropriately enough, "Doctor Who: A Fairytale Life" is written by Eisner-nominated "Jack of Fables" scribe Matt Sturges, with interior art from "Doctor Who: The Forgotten" illustrator Kelly Yates. The four-issue series sends The Eleventh Doctor and companion Amy Pond on an adventure that unfolds in a medieval fantasy world populated with knigts, castles, and yes, even a dragon.
I chatted up the "Fairytale Life" writer to get some details about The Doctor's latest adventure and pick his brain about the upcoming "Doctor Who" season premiere. You can also get an exclusive preview of the issue — which hits shelves April 20 — courtesy of Idw Publishing.
