Although it's hardly as famous as Stagecoach or some of the later Westerns he made, Tall in the Saddle is crucial to John Wayne's transformation into a movie icon. Despite having worked in the genre for years ahead of his role in Stagecoach, the 1939 film is widely credited for putting John Wayne on the map in Hollywood and setting him up as its top Western star. Both of these things are true of Stagecoach's role in John Wayne's storied film career, but it alone didn't carve his image.
Following Stagecoach's release, Wayne's popularity grew, allowing him to amass leading roles in bigger-budget films than what he was accustomed to in the 1930s. In the early 1940s, Wayne headlined numerous movies, including Westerns like The Spoilers with Randolph Scott, In Old California, and Dark Command with Roy Rogers. The Golden Age of Hollywood brought so many different stars together that it might make your head spin, but as far as Westerns are concerned, it wasn't often that two genre heavies headlined the same picture. But the 1942 adaptation of The Spoilers, which was nominated for an Oscar for its impressive art direction back in the day, brought together John Wayne with Randolph Scott for an Alaskan-based drama that pushes the fringes of what a Western can be. More than that, it pushed the limit of what Western duels can be as Wayne and Scott forsook firearms in favor of a battle of fisticuffs that remains legendary to this day.

Despite being two of the genre's top stars, John Wayne and Randolph Scott only made one Western together. Released in 1942, The Spoilers was one of a pair of films to feature the two great Western legends. After 1942, the pair never reunited on the big screen, with their paths in Hollywood diverging away from each other, even though they remained tightly linked with the Western genre.
Randolph Scott and John Wayne starred in Westerns throughout their respective careers, with each pumping multiple films a year for a time. Wayne was responsible for several of the greatest Westerns of all time, while Scott - though not nearly as famous as Wayne - contributed a long list of quality Westerns as well, such as The Desperadoes, The Nevadan, and The Man In The Saddle. More often than not, he was the hero of his films. However, that was certainly not the case with The Spoilers,...

If you’re a baseball fan, particularly if you’re a Dodgers, Astros, Cubs or Yankees fan, the real baseball season started this past Friday with the inauguration of the American and National League Championship Series. I’m a Dodgers fan, which means I’m among that group who, arguably, have gone the longest without the satisfaction/excitement/nail-biting terror of seeing their team in the World Series, the next step for whoever wins in the Nlcs. The Dodgers last appeared in the World Series in 1988, capping a memorable run with a championship by beating the Oakland A’s. That was 29 years ago. The Cubs are the reigning Mlb champions, having won last year’s World Series after a 107-year drought. And the Yankees, a mainstay of the World Series around the turn of this century, last appeared in an October championship series in 2009.

Remember that old Western movie where John Wayne punches an alien in the face?
If you don't, it's probably because it was never made. Sadly, since the beginning of the motion picture business, moviegoers have been denied the cowboy/alien hybrid that they have been yearning for. That is until Iron Man 2 director Jon Favreau decided to turn the graphic novel Cowboys & Aliens into a full-length feature starring Daniel Craig.
Although we won't be seeing the Duke saddling up against the extraterrestrial anytime soon, I'd say that James Bond is a pretty fair replacement.
Here's what else we know about the film...

Is Jon Favreau geared up and ready to shoot? Is Daniel Craig onboard, or is this just wishful thinking? Will There Will Be Blood actor Paul Dano be joining the cast? What about Mad Men's Abigail Spencer?...
