Donald Trump, now serving as board chair of the Kennedy Center, is well into his overhaul of the cultural institution. On February 7th, he fired dozens of board members, appointed himself to the top role, and dismissed Deborah Rutter from her position as president—a role she held for 11 years. Now, Trump has reportedly begun storyboarding the shows he wants to produce in Washington, D.C.
According to audio of a board meeting meeting obtained by The Washington Post, the 47th president would like the Kennedy Center’s programming to go “slightly more conservative.” He specifically cited, as examples, “non-woke” musicals, such as Cats, Fiddler on the Roof, Phantom of the Opera, and more.
Cats was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and follows a group of felines (portrayed by cast members as anthropomorphic creatures) as they prepare for the Jellicle Ball, where they decide on a tribe member to leave...

On this day in 1986, a gang of sassy teens snuck into the Park Plaza Mall for a night of partying, hook-ups, and maybe a little light property damage. Unfortunately for them, the mall’s new security system wasn’t just state-of-the-art, it was armed, dangerous, and very eager to enforce after-hours rules with deadly precision.
Welcome to Chopping Mall, the gloriously schlocky sci-fi slasher that gave us killer robots, exploding heads, and the absolute blueprint for shopping mall carnage in horror cinema.
Directed by Jim Wynorski and produced by Roger Corman’s wife Julie Corman, Chopping Mall took a simple premise – teens locked in a mall with killer security droids – and ran full-tilt into cult-movie gold. With laser-eyed ‘Protectors’ going haywire thanks to a freak lightning storm, the film delivers a perfect cocktail of ‘80s neon, gore, and robot death-ray madness.
But what’s endured just as strongly as the...

Netflix’s “The Leopard” is gaining global traction with viewers just as the streaming giant is taking the sumptuous Sicilian series on a tour involving gala presentations in Italian embassies and other institutions in Washington D.C., London, Berlin, Brussels and other world capitals.
The high-end show, based on the classic Sicily-set novel by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, dropped on Netflix March 5. In its first five days, “The Leopard” scored more than 3 million views worldwide and landed in the streamer’s Top 10 in over 30 countries including Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Germany, Mexico and Spain — in addition to Italy, where “The Leopard” rapidly shot to No. 1, Netflix said on Wednesday.
Following a glitzy March 3 Rome launch with a black-tie gala held in the Eternal City’s Opera Theatre, the lavish historical tapestry — with elements comparable to “Downton Abbey” or “The Crown” – has been unveiled, in part, at a slew of hosted events...

Gerard Butler has had a varied career so far, with him playing everything from action leads to rom-com love interests to a singing Phantom of the Opera for Joel Schumacher. But, it has to be said that his most consistently entertaining output falls squarely into the action genre, and as far as Gerard Butler movies go, the action films will always be our favorites… so don’t expect to see The Ugly Truth on this list, but the Jennifer Aniston adventure The Bounty Hunter might scrape by. Or maybe not. Let’s see how it goes:
300 (2006)
Perhaps The film that put Gerard Butler on the map for most people, particularly the action and comic book crowds. Butler is in peak physical form here, showing off his bod as the ultimate Spartan warrior and proving that he is indeed quite the leading man. His performance here is commanding, a bit in...

Patrick Wilson is joining Amy Adams and Javier Bardem in the upcoming Apple TV+ “Cape Fear” adaptation.
From creator and showrunner Nick Antosca and executive producers Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg, “Cape Fear” follows a happily married couple whose lives are turned upside down when a notorious killer from their past gets out of prison. Adams will play the wife, Anna, while Bardem will play the killer. Wilson’s role has yet to be officially disclosed.

Netflix pulled out all the stops as it unveiled its hotly anticipated limited series “The Leopard,” based on the classic Sicily-set novel by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, which marks the streamer’s biggest splash in Italy thus far.
On Tuesday, Netflix held a packed press conference in the frescoed ballroom of Rome’s central Hotel Plaza, which was also used to film one of the show’s key scenes. “The Leopard” will formally premiere in Rome on March 3 with a black-tie gala held in the Eternal City’s Opera Theatre before dropping globally on March 5.
The lavish historical tapestry — with elements comparable to “Downton Abbey” or “The Crown” and potential to make a global mark — is a modern take on the sensual Sicilian saga famously adapted into a film by Luchino Visconti starring Claudia Cardinale, Alain Delon and Burt Lancaster. The classic Gaston Leroux novel The Phantom of the Opera has been adapted countless times over the years – even Robert Englund played the Phantom back in the 1980s! – and it seems yet another adaptation is on the way. This one hails out of France, Deadline reports.
Alexandre Castagnetti is directing the French-language version of The Phantom of the Opera, which is said to be “aimed at a young adult audience and taking its cue from the Twilight franchise.”
Deva Cassel (The Leopard), Julien De Saint Jean (The Count Of Monte Cristo) and Romain Duris (Heartbreaker) are attached to star in the $20 million French production.
Deadline notes in today’s report, “Filming will begin this summer at the world famous Palais Garnier opera house, or Opéra Garnier, in Paris, against the backdrop of its theatre, backstage areas, domed roof and subterranean vaulted cistern, sometimes referred to as its lake.”

Jon M. Chu's musical "Wizard of Oz" riff "Wicked," based on the pop-u-lar Broadway musical by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, wasn't terribly well-reviewed in the pages of /Film, cited by this author as being a mushy mess, led by two weirdly dispassionate lead performances from Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. The review pondered why Chu, who ordinarily can make exciting, energetic musicals like "Step Up 3D" and "In the Heights," decided to let himself be upstaged by busy production design and dull, eternally retreaded fantasy mythology.
My review, however, is certainly the outlier on "Wicked." On January 23, Chu's film was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actress (for Erivo), Best Supporting Actress (for Grande), and Best Production Design. The film was also generally well-reviewed, earning an 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes (based on 380 reviews). Have you seen the Walt Disney-directed animated short "The Skeleton Dance?" A part of Disney's "Silly Symphony" series, the short revolves around four human skeletons dancing merrily in a graveyard, imitating the allegorical Dance of Death (also known as danse macabre). It isn't particularly spooky, but it is a fun, whimsical piece of animation that is still regarded with a sense of nostalgic fondness. However, this 1930 short was not always viewed through such a benign lens. Indeed, "The Skeleton Dance" was banned in Denmark upon its original release, with its subject matter being deemed too ... macabre. This moral stance to justify censorship might seem a bit silly in hindsight, as animated skeletons using bones as a xylophone hardly make for an unsettling premise. Well, in vaguely related news, the short entered the U.S. public domain on January 1, 2025, so you can now enjoy these fine skeletal gentlemen having a gala time to your heart's content.

Writer/director Robert Eggers just dominated at the box office with Nosferatu, earning over $136 million at the worldwide box office thus far. The movie's eerie Gothic wintry setting was perfect for the holiday season, and it showed a trend towards electrifying new life into old, black-and-white Universal monster movies. Eggers is in good company since director Leigh Whannell, who already had a hit with his remake of The Invisible Man in 2020, is set to explore another Universal monster with Wolf Man.
While these movies have been undeniably successful, there are still many Universal monster movies that have gone unexplored. Time has seemed to have forgotten all about these classic Universal monsters. Almost everyone is familiar with Dracula, Frankenstein, the Phantom of the Opera, and the Creature From the Black Lagoon, but few know these underrated horror icons exist. It's time they got the respect and maybe even the reboot that they deserve.

Scottish actor and producer Gerard Butler has been the star of countless projects within a variety of genres. From his role as a protective father in the action film Greenland all the way to the haunted singer in the movie adaptation of Phantom of the Opera, there is no role that Butler can't handle. In addition to his previous work, his upcoming role of Stoick the Vast in the highly anticipated How to Train Your Dragon live-action film is sure to keep him on audiences' minds throughout 2025 and beyond. Although Butler's filmography is expansive, to say the least, there is one project that audiences of both film and literature should be sure not to miss.

Post-apocalyptic Movie Disaster (Photo Credit – Prime Video)
In 1997, Kevin Costner’s The Postman flopped hard. An $80M gamble, it pulled in just $20M, leaving Costner and Warner Bros. nursing a box office wound no plot twist could heal.
The Postman was set in a world ravaged by the collapse of civilization. Costner played a drifter who stumbles upon a skeleton in a mail truck, takes up the mailman’s mantle, and starts delivering letters for a “new government” he just made up. It’s a classic case of the lie becoming reality, with people believing that Broadway’s Phantom of the Opera was still showing in post-apocalyptic New York while they scrounged for food in a “three-year winter.” What could possibly go wrong? Well, everything.
The film’s lackluster box office performance wasn’t the only problem. There were giant leaps in time that would’ve made any viewer scratch their head.

Robert Eggers’ lushly gothic remake of “Nosferatu” is a loving homage to silent films, with its dramatic black-and-white scenes and overpowering sense of creeping dread.
The eerie images of Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård) hand sweeping over the entire city of London and — in one of the film’s most striking shots — the face of his obsession, Ellen (Lily-Rose Depp), is a nod to F. W. Murnau’s original 1922 film, in which Count Orlok’s shadow falls across his victims before the monster himself enters the frame.
If you’re ready to do a deeper dive into the classics that influenced Eggers, start with these seven films.

Nosferatu's first SpongeBob SquarePants cameo was comic relief to a creepy episode. The iconic vampire has since reappeared across multiple seasons, cementing his place in the show's canon.
Nosferatu is well-acquainted with SpongeBob SquarePants fans; Count Orlok has frequently visited Bikini Bottom since his Season 2 appearance. The show ventured into quirky dark humor in "Graveyard Shift", but audiences were likely startled by the vampire's sudden presence. His first cameo was played for laughs, but his black-and-white presence contrasted with that scene's cartoon saturation. The jarring experience was so memorable that the show made him a recurring character like Mary, Barnacle Boy, and Mermaid Man. In an interview with THR, director Robert Eggers acknowledged how SpongeBob SquarePants revived Nosferatu as a pop culture icon.

Robert Eggers addresses how SpongeBob Squarepants provided an unexpected introduction to the influential cinematic vampire for many young viewers ahead of his Nosferatu big screen reimagining releasing in theaters. The director's horror passion project tells the story of a bloodthirsty count who descends upon a sleepy town and inflicts terror on its citizens. Nosferatu stars Bill Skarsgard as the leading vampire alongside Lily Rose-Depp, Nicholas Holt, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Willem Dafoe, Emma Corrin, and Ralph Ineson as the feature's cast of fearful mortals.
During the red carpet event for Nosferatu's premiere, Eggers was asked by The Hollywood Reporter whether he was aware that many viewers had their first exposure to the original 1922 version of the vampire through a quick gag in a SpongeBob Squarepants episode.

Bet you never thought one of the most acclaimed directors of our time would be giving props to a certain yellow sponge for making audiences connect with his latest film. That's exactly what happened at the Los Angeles premiere of horror director Robert Eggers' upcoming film Nosferatu. On the carpet, The Hollywood Reporter asked Eggers if he knew of SpongeBob SquarePants' references to Count Orlok that introduced the iconic vampire to many kids.
In one particularly hilarious episode of the famous Nickelodeon cartoon titled "Graveyard Shift," SpongeBob is spooked by a ghost story told by his coworker Squidward after their boss Mr. Krabs decides to keep the Krusty Krab open for 24 hours. By the end of the episode, SpongeBob realizes that every spooky detail of the story he thought was coming true had a practical explanation, except for the flickering lights.

Director Robert Eggers is shouting out an unlikely figure ahead of the release of his horror film Nosferatu — SpongeBob SquarePants.
At the Los Angeles premiere of the film on Thursday, The Hollywood Reporter asked Eggers if he knew that the Nickelodeon cartoon introduced many kids to the iconic vampire. Nosferatu (also known as Count Orlok) made several appearances on the show.
The filmmaker confirmed he was familiar with the SpongeBob element and explained, “There was a show called Muppet Babies when I was a kid that would play little clips of Lon Chaney’s Phantom of the Opera and early versions of Cyrano de Bergerac and stuff; that weird cartoon gave me exposure to a lot of movies that I watched when I was a little older with memories from Muppet Babies. So, thanks SpongeBob.”

Ariana Grande travels with a furry companion; no, not Toto, but close. The Grammy-winning pop singer — and, thanks to her film “Wicked,” newly minted movie star — shows up at our shoot hours early, ready to make friends as she meanders around the coffee station with her beagle-Chihuahua mix, Toulouse, in her arms. As time passes, Grande begins to seem like just another member of the crew, chatting eagerly with anyone she sees. Not only does Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow look like Bart Simpson, but he’s starting to do some Bart Simpson-like things. Specifically, Burrow just spent $3 million on a Batmobile from the Christopher Nolan “Dark Knight” trilogy.
“This is a very Bart move, to get a bunch of money and buy the Batmobile,” said “The Simpsons” executive producer Matt Selman. “Bart is the bad boy who’s almost like Joe Burrow. They both have spiky blonde hair too. It’s almost too beautiful to be true.”
He’s why it’s a bit serendipitous: Bart Simpson will serve as Burrow’s Bengals coach on tonight’s NFL “Monday Night Football.” Well, sort of. In the latest unique NFL alt cast geared toward kids and families, Disney+, ESPN and “The Simpsons” producers have collaborated to “Simpsons”-ize the Monday night matchup between the Bengals and the Dallas Cowboys. While his co-stars, Ella Purnell and Aaron Moten, got to wear comfy vault suits and fly around in high-tech, fusion-powered power armor, Goggins was buried under an intense layer of prosthetics to turn him into The Ghoul. Due to mutations in his DNA caused by extreme radiation, The Ghoul has wandered the wasteland for over 200 years, and transformed into a vicious killer. Goggins gave an intense performance as the ghoulish bounty hunter in Season 1, and he's back to do it all again in Season 2, because, as any Fallout fan will tell you... war never changes.
Walton Goggins took to Instagram to share the good news. The actor posted a photo from the make-up chair, as the incredible prosthetics team were applying The Ghoul's face over his own. Teasing one side of his face,...

When one thinks of Angelina Jolie’s personal life, one of the first names to be brought up is that of Brad Pitt. The two had a whirlwind of a romance that ended in just as bright a fire as the spark they felt on the set of Mr. and Mrs. Smith. The tales of their divorce still echo in the empty mansions of Hollywood, and while years have passed since they parted ways, they cannot seem to outrun their names being put together.

Nicolas Cage is unrecognizable as the title character in the horror movie Longlegs. Key special effects makeup artist Felix Fox and Harlow Macfarlane worked 2½ hours every day to transform Cage into the satanic serial killer.
“There was about four designs,” Fox said. “What they settled on after we tested on was that we would go a little bit more extreme.”
Fox said the original concepts were less pale white and less cosmetically altered. The final Longlegs pays homage to Lon Chaney’s Phantom of the Opera, she said. Furthermore, they had to age Longlegs from the 1970s to the ‘90s.
“He has two looks for it,” Fox continued. “One is the ‘70s and one is with more of the beauty makeup, a little bit of blue eyeshadow.”

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera, one of the most successful musicals in Broadway history when it ended its 35-year run in 2023, is coming back to North America in a tour featuring a reconfigured version.
The multi-year tour, which will launch at Baltimore’s Hippodrome Theatre in November 2025, will feature Maria Björnson’s original design, be directed by Seth Sklar-Heyn (based on the original direction by Harold Prince) with the choreography of Gillian Lynne recreated and adapted by Chrissie Cartwright.
The touring production is based on a staging that debuted in London in 2021 following the Covid pandemic shutdown. The new, more economical version, still running in London, features a smaller orchestra and a redesigned set.
Additional tour cities and casting will be announced at a later date. Potential Broadway or New York plans were not addressed in today’s announcement.

The Goosebumps series, based on R. L. Stine's bestselling novels, is perfect viewing for Halloween. Both series of Goosebumps are instantly recognizable with its "viewer beware, you're in for a scare" tagline, and its original 1990s title sequence features one of the creepiest dogs that a series aimed at young people could imagine. However, it is the series' blend of horror and comedy that makes Goosebumps episodes fun as well as scary.
The Goosebumps series is self-aware, and some Goosebumps episodes are parodies of well-known horror stories, like Phantom of the Auditorium's take on Phantom of the Opera. Some feature classic Halloween monsters, like werewolves, zombies, and vampires, while others involve stranger creatures, like the tag-loving "Beast from the East." Two of the scariest Goosebumps episodes take place during Halloween, but many other episodes would also be perfect to watch on Halloween.

Exclusive: Andrew Lloyd Webber has unveiled his new West End and Broadway musical: a magical romance called The Illusionist, directed by Sunset Boulevard’s Jamie Lloyd.
During a private audience at his penthouse office adjacent to the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, one of six theatres controlled through his Lw Theatres group, the legendary composer of Phantom of the Opera and Evita gave Deadline an exclusive preview of three of the several numbers he has so far scored.
The impresario says Oscar-winning screenwriter Chris Terrio (Argo) “has done the book very much with me, but he’s the scriptwriter.” British songwriter Bruno Major is also attached.
Lloyd Webber performed an early draft of his score to Lloyd earlier this year as they began preparing to open Sunset Boulevard, starring Nicole Scherzinger and Tom Francis, on Broadway. The show premiered at the St. James Theater on October 20 to ecstatic notices from the majority of critics.

Universal Monsters are regarded as one of the mainstays of frightening films. The legendary creatures have stalked nightmares for decades, preying on every anxiety possible. Their outstanding silver screen pedigree began with Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and expanded exponentially. While many of these early films have been left by the wayside, one still dominates modern pop culture.
The Phantom of the Opera jumpstarted an enduring franchise of frights. Lon Chaneys outstanding performance has withstood the test of time, and the century-old film is as powerful today as it was then. Its timeless story, pulled straight from the pages of Gaston Lerouxs novel, has since been adapted countless times. Universal even took another swing at its own property, releasing a looser interpretation of the film with Claude Rains in 1943.

Getting your first big break in Hollywood can be tricky; the journey to superstardom relies as much upon luck and the correct combination of circumstances as it does innate talent. Even someone like Clint Eastwood — whose impressively prolific career spans several decades and has molded him into a cultural icon — struggled to make a mark when he first set out to act. When Eastwood auditioned for the first time, he was rejected -- a likely occurrence for even the biggest stars today, as the perfect opportunities often boil down to the right connections and a performance suited to the role. After Eastwood dealt with a string of unsuccessful auditions in 1954, he scored a minor, uncredited role in Jack Arnold's "Revenge of the Creature," and went on to star in similar parts that mostly amounted to brief appearances with little to no dialogue.

Within a seven-year span, Lon Chaney, Jr. played the same werewolf an impressive total of five times. Among the many actors associated with Universal's rich library of monster movies is Lon Chaney, Jr., a talented actor with an extremely deep and impressive filmography. The son of Phantom of the Opera star Lon Chaney, the actor quickly carved a path for himself in Hollywood as a horror movie star. Much like his father before him, Chaney, Jr. often used heavy makeup for his roles, which were often monsters in classic horror movies.
Chaney. Jr. was active in the industry for decades, getting his start in the silent era during his youth and finally retiring in the early 1970s. During this time, Chaney, Jr. worked in several mediums and genres, ranging from Western movies to adventure films. However, horror will always be what Lon Chaney Jr. is most closely associated with.

Over the years, a long list of stars have assisted in bringing Universal's biggest monsters to life. Some have even played more than one. But only Lon Chaney, Jr. has all four of its horror icons in his acting credits, arguably making this the
the most distinguishing aspect of the actor's storied career in Hollywood.
Lon Chaney Jr. inherited a legacy of horror. His father was Lon Chaney, a prominent actor from the silent film era. The elder Chaney was known mostly for playing characters that required extensive makeup, many of which being characters intended to be scary. Due to his work in movies like Phantom of the Opera, Chaney left a lasting remark on the industry. But as remarkable as it was, it was actually trumped by what his son did for the genre. There are some stories in the history of film that end up being repeated over and over again. Some of these are just simple categories like vampire, werewolf, and zombie films. Some of them get a little more granular and specific like the story of Dracula or Frankenstein’s monster. Finally, we can get even more granular and look at a specific title that has made the rounds a few times. I Am Legend by the wonderful and prolific Richard Matheson was made into three different movies with Last Man on Earth, The Omega Man, and finally I Am Legend. While King Kong and Phantom of the Opera probably have the most, Invasion of the Body Snatchers has the most consistent offerings. The 2007 iteration was a bust but the other 3 are all incredibly solid. With the 90s version turning 30 we thought it was worth seeing if it was a generic...

Gaston Leroux's 1910 novel The Phantom of the Opera has been adapted more times than anyone knows for sure. The romantic horror story has undergone various title changes and revisions, from early Chinese propaganda films to modern oddities like 1989's Phantom of the Mall: Eric's Revenge about a vigilante living in the bowels of the Sherman Oaks Galleria. Most fans only know the Phantom's white half-mask popularized by the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, but much more eccentric designs have graced the screen.

But adding music, new characters, and choosing to add a memorable list of songs to the retelling was a stroke of inspiration. Similar to George Bernard Shaw's play, Pygmalion -- which partially inspired the '97 film - Anastasia has seen many different iterations over the years from stage to screen. And though the leading character herself is based on a tragic historical figure, the story of her short life has reached mythical proportions.

The Rosemary's Baby prequel Apartment 7a is newly streaming, and its best scene is a surreal musical number. Its story of a struggling dancer who sacrifices everything for her career highlights the chemistry between dance and horror two art forms that test the limits of the body. Fortunately for curious fans, there are more movies on this topic than most people know.
Dance can be an expression of primal instincts, or a torturous discipline that can push the human form beyond its limitations. This ranked list features ten of the strangest, sexiest, scariest films that make dance a source of fear, giving a new meaning to the term "body horror."

There was a time when if someone could act, sing, and dance, they were called a "triple threat." The idea was that they were viable, versatile performers for both stage dramas and musicals, making them a threat to any actor who only had talent for one or two of the above techniques. In modern cinema, where musicals are largely out of vogue, the "triple threat" might now refer to someone who can act, perform martial arts, and do their own stunts. In the modern landscape, fighting is more common than dancing.
Many actors, however, still undergo voice and dance training on the regular, wanting to be as versatile as possible. Many modern film actors, one might find, started on the stage, sometimes belting out some of Broadway's most famous showtunes, before becoming genre stars on the big screen. Case in point: Hugh Jackman. Jackman rose to worldwide fame in 2000 after...

A story known for its horror elements and which is now a horror classic is getting a new adaptation on Disney+, and its not the revival I expected for it. The current trend of reboots, revivals, remakes, and legacy sequels has seen both hits and misses. While I admit Im not a big fan of these, some of them have been surprisingly good and have successfully revived franchises or brought back attention to forgotten characters. That said, I would have expected a completely different treatment for a character whos part of the select group of Universals Classic Monsters.
