World War II movies have been a prominent fixture in Hollywood since the war began. Even as soldiers were charging onto the battlefield to face off against Imperial Japanese soldiers and the Nazis, the industry was producing more theatrical releases. Movies like The Great Dictator (1940), Minesweeper (1943), and Hitler – Beast of Berlin (1939) forced audiences to reckon with the reality of war. Even when World War II ended violently, Hollywood never lost its fascination with the era. It continued to produce more releases with every passing year.
Throughout the 20th century, World War II movies were an essential staple. Every decade had a massive World War II movie released, culminating in Saving Private Ryan (1998) and Schindler's List (1993). Before color films conquered the big screen, however, black-and-white epics...

Las Vegas four-piece and indie sleaze godfathers The Killers are practically immortalized for their contributions to mainstream indie rock in the aughts and onward. The group is celebrating the 20th anniversary of their groundbreaking debut album Hot Fuss in early 2025, but The Killers are far from just a one-hit wonder.
Their discography is full of hits and each album has a certain acclaim in its own right. Among the band's long list of accomplishments, one controversial lyric stands as a top-tier The Killers lore. Quite apart from questions of its origin, the oft-maligned, grammatically imaginative lyric was the center-point of one of the band's biggest hits, which became the most streamed song on Spotify in 2008, and the first single released on the way to a triple-platinum album success, according to Far Out Magazine.

With new versions of Wolf Man and Frankenstein arriving in 2025, the Universal Monsters are very much the center of attention. However, during the golden age of horror, Universal Pictures also produced a variety of lesser-known masterpieces that can stand up to heavy hitters like Dracula. What follows are ten of the studio's best fright features that are not familiar to everyone — but they should be.
The most famous Universal horror films are carried by iconic characters like the Count and Frankenstein's Monster, and the charisma of actors like Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff. However, their best performances are not necessarily in their best-known movies, and this list includes smaller but equally-high quality. These ten supernatural shockers, Satanic thrillers, and hilarious horror comedies prove that Universal Pictures has much more to offer fans than the usual suspects.

Ava Gardner was one of the great movie stars of the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s, Her smouldering good looks often cast her in the role of seductress. And her three high-profile marriages only reinforced that public perception of the actress.
After a number of bit parts for MGM in the early 1940s, Gardner broke through with a sensational performance in 1946’s “The Killers” which truly launched her film stardom. As her craft evolved over the years, she became an esteemed actress, earning a Best Actress Oscar nomination for 1953’s “Mogambo” and a Golden Globe nom for 1964’s “The Night of the Iguana,” as well as four BAFTA nominations.
So let’s celebrate her life by looking back at and ranking the 12 greatest films of Gardner. Our photo gallery also includes “Showboat,” “The Killers” plus the movies mentioned in this article. Which one do you think is in our #1 overall spot?...

January 2025 could mark a bleak month for very specific reasons, but in that month one can watch a nicely curated collection of David Bowie’s best performances. Nearly a decade since he passed, the iconic actor (who had some other trades) is celebrated with The Man Who Fell to Earth, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, The Linguini Incident, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, and Basquiat. (Note: watch The Missing Pieces under Fire Walk with Me‘s Criterion edition for about three times as much Phillip Jeffries.) It’s a retrospective-heavy month: Nicole Kidman, Cameron Crowe, Ethan Hawke, Paulin Soumanou Vieyra, Paolo Sorrentino, and Sean Baker are given spotlights; the first and last bring with them To Die For and Take Out‘s Criterion Editions, joining Still Walking, Hunger, and A Face in the Crowd.

Police dramas were flourishing in the 1970s (and later parodied in the 1980s) thanks to "Dragnet" when television writer Robert L. Collins hit upon what counted as a genius notion at the tail end of the Richard M. Nixon administration: what if instead of "policeman," "policewoman?" NBC said "Show us," and Collins responded with the buzzy "Police Woman" starring Angie Dickinson as Sergeant Suzanne "Pepper" Anderson.
"Police Woman" was about as progressive as you could expect from an hour-long network drama in the '70s when it was rare for a drama of any genre to be headed up by a woman. Once a week, Dickinson struck a quasi-feminist figure as an ultra-capable officer of the law with a penchant for dressing in tight-fitting shirts in pants. At least once she went undercover in a swimsuit. And as she complained to the press years later, the writers liked to have...

Burt Lancaster could be just about anything you needed him to be — except small. He was not towering at 6'1", but he sure made it look that way on screen. Whether smiling or glowering, good natured or pure evil, there was a formidable bearing to Lancaster. But he did not lumber. God no, he was as graceful as a circus acrobat because, well, he was one. How dare a man so sturdy be so damn limber. And golden. And beautiful.
Lancaster's acting career was as remarkable as his absurdly perfect physicality. He made his motion picture debut in a stone-cold classic, and was one of the most popular movie stars on the planet for well over a decade. Lancaster worked too frequently to not slip up on occasion, but he generally exhibited great taste, particularly as a producer. The Twilight Saga is a pop culture phenomenon, to say the least, and it has come back into the spotlight with talks of a remake. Slated to be an animated television series on Netflix, it will lean into Stephanie Meyer's latest release, Midnight Sun, which is Twilight's events from Edward's perspective. While the remake is highly anticipated, The Twilight Saga movies remain iconic in how they adapted one of the world's most iconic love triangles.
Bella and Edward's love story quickly gained a huge fanbase from the novels already, but the release of Twilight in 2008 gave faces to these captivating characters. Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson were the perfect Bella and Edward, and Taylor Lautner's Jacob sent their perfect romance careening with the start of a love triangle. Burt Lancaster was an Oscar-winning actor who appeared in dozens of movies until his death in 1994. But which titles are among his finest? Let’s take a look back at 20 of Lancaster’s greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1913, Lancaster got into acting after performing as an acrobat in the circus. He made his movie debut in 1946 with a leading role in the quintessential noir thriller “The Killers” (1946). He earned his first Oscar nomination as Best Actor for Fred Zinnemann‘s wartime drama “From Here to Eternity” (1953), winning the prize just seven years later for playing a fast-talking preacher in “Elmer Gantry” (1960). Lancaster would compete twice more in the category (“Birdman of Alcatraz” in 1962 and “Atlantic City” in 1981).
In the 1950s, the actor decided to chart his own career by forming the production company Hecht-Hill-Lancaster, which churned out a number of successful titles including the Best Picture-winning “Marty...

Some 17 years ago, viewers were both maddened and mesmerized by the tactile fever dream that was M, a cornucopia of sound and motion that is, for the moment, Lee Myung-se's last feature-length testament to the cinema medium he so adores. Though it doesn't quite qualify as a full feature return, Lee is back on stage presenting the richly cinematic four-part anthology film The Killers. Lee spearheaded this project as a creative producer and directed its final segment. Also in the formidable directing roster are Kim Jong-kwan (The Table), Roh Deok (Very Ordinary Couple) and Chang Hang-joon (Forgotten). The film essentially features four adaptions of Ernest Hemingway's famous 1927 short story of the same name, in which two hitmen enter a small town diner one...

Mohammad Rasoulof, president of the New Currents jury at this year’s Busan International Film Festival, said that Germany’s selection of his latest work, The Seed Of The Sacred Fig, as this year’s Oscars submission should offer hope to other filmmakers working under strict censorship conditions.
Rasoulof is currently living in exile in Germany after fleeing Iran on the eve of this year’s Cannes film festival – where The Seed Of The Sacred Fig screened in competition and won a Special Award – after Iranian authorities sentenced him to eights years imprisonment for making the film without a permit.
Germany subsequently selected the film as its submission for the Best International Feature category of the Oscars. There was zero chance that Iran’s government-influenced Oscars selection committee would have chosen the film.

The Killers anthology brings together four renowned Korean directors for a creative examination of the criminal underworld. Released in 2024, the film draws inspiration from Ernest Hemingway’s short story “The Killers” as well as Edward Hopper’s iconic painting “Nighthawks,” both of which depict ominous encounters between hitmen and their targets. Through four distinct short films, Kim Jong-kwan, Roh Deok, Jang Hang-jun, and Lee Myung-se put their own singular spin on this pulpy premise.
Kim opens with “Metamorphosis,” throwing viewers into a neo-noir world of blurred reality and vengeance. A down-on-his-luck man awakens in a lavish underground bar owned by an alluring yet mysterious woman who offers a path to retaliation. Roh follows with the dark comedy “Contractors,” skewering outsourcing absurdity through the botched handoff of a murder contract down an incompetent chain of hires.

Ronald Reagan had such an eventful presidency that everyone seems to forget he was once an actor. In fact, Reagan had a longer career in Hollywood (19371966) than in politics (19671988). The former president's journey in the entertainment industry started at Who radio, where he served as a broadcaster for Chicago Cubs games. He then moved to California where he signed a multi-picture deal with Warner Bros., allowing him to make a whopping 30 films before enlisting in 1942.
After the war, Reagans popularity grew, enabling him to do business with Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures, and Rko Pictures. His new standing in Hollywood also allowed him to be elected as the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) president.
For most of Ronald Reagan's career, he concentrated on making westerns. However, he chose to conclude his Hollywood career with a gangster movie before running for California governor. That movie was 1964s The Killers, a blunt, terrifying motion...

The Killers kicked off a two-night stand at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, New York, on Saturday night by honoring another band that played the same venue 60 years earlier.
“Some of you might know the history of the place,” Killers frontman Brandon Flowers told the crowd. “Obviously there were some amazing tennis matches that took place here. When we think about that historic Beatles performance at Shea Stadium, that was in 1965. But in 1964, 60 years ago, the Beatles did two nights here at Forest Hills. What are the defining traits of a character actor? Why is a shapeshifting virtuoso like Daniel Day-Lewis considered a full-blown movie star, while a chameleon-like genius like Giancarlo Esposito is routinely relegated to supporting player status? As previously discussed here at /Film, there are multiple factors at play: box office, deeply ingrained cultural notions of physical attractiveness, distinctive utility, and the Borgnine Paradox.
It should come as no surprise that my solo endeavor to arrive at a solid-ish definition of "character actor" is not the first in the history of the written word. There have been many, many attempts by whole groups of esteemed journalists to get at some kind of reasonable understanding of this term/concept, and, having read more than a few of them, I can assure you that there is no hard-fast rule. You could call just about everyone outside of Britney Spears a character actor --...

Tom Cruise – the man who has proven time and again that age is nothing but a number. No one will look at him and say that he is sixty-two! Just look at the stunts he did in Top Gun: Maverick and the recent Mission: Impossible. When the conversation is about going all out for stunts and turning the intensity to ‘reckless,’ you just cannot leave the ever-charming superstar out of it.

Sure, there are other actors out there who perform their own stunts, including Keanu Reeves, but there is just something about Tom Cruise that sets him apart from the rest. Michael Mann, who directed the actor in Collateral (2004), will completely agree with the previous statement. In fact, he even compared Tom Cruise’s gunmanship with that of Keanu Reeves and declared the former as the winner.

Film Noir is a classic film genre that has provided a blueprint for many modern-day crime thrillers and mystery movies. Everything from Se7en to Prisoners and Drive owes much of their aesthetic and cinematic language to Hollywood's highly stylized genre that typically paints its pictures in stunning black-and-white photography and composes a grim picture of a corrupt society while exploring moral conflicts through characters caught up in a current of social upheaval.
Born out of a blend of American crime dramas, French poetic realism, and German Expressionist cinema, film noir began in 1940. It produced some of Hollywood's most enthralling movies until the late 1950s when Neo-Noir began to reinterpret and expand upon the genre's original conventions (and lead to such classics as Blade Runner and Mulholland Drive). For this list, we'll be sticking to the mid-20th-century films that adhered to the original ideals, creating some of the most atmospheric and gritty pictures ever made.

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week: two music videos Tim Burton made for The Killers. Tim Burton wears his influences on his sleeve. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which premieres this week at the Venice Film Festival, is the first time since Batman Returns that Tim Burton is making a sequel to his own movie. And this is the first time that an original concept by Burton is sequelized by himself. Recently, Burton has been playing the franchise-game, with films like Dumbo, Alice in Wonderland and Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. But even before that films like Mars Attacks, Ed Wood and Sleepy Hollow aped the styles of predecessors and inspirations from Burton's childhood....

The Democratic National Convention continued on Tuesday with another slate of speakers advocating for Vice President Kamala Harris. They weren’t all Democrats. The DNC’s second day also featured the delegation roll call, in which delegates representing American states and territories announced their selection for president. It was way more exciting than it had any right to be.
As DNC Secretary Jason Rae called on each delegation from the stage, DJ Cassidy cued up a song for each state — except in the case of Georgia, when Atlanta native Lil Jon...

Many classic film noirs have been successfully remade for modern audiences, adding new elements to the beloved stories. Through remakes like "The Killers" and "Cape Fear," filmmakers have found ways to update and intensify the dark themes of film noir. The 2021 version of "Nightmare Alley" is a visually stunning and gripping remake that pays tribute to the original film noir classic.
Film noir may have had its heyday during the 1940s and 1950s, but since then, many genre classics have been remade for modern viewers. Through dark, gritty, and incredibly creative concepts, film noirs enthralled audiences with their sinister portrayals of urban environments, shocking criminal happenings, and alluring femme fatales, meaning its no surprise that filmmakers want to revisit these stories time and time again. While its often hard to outdo the original, plenty of remakes of classic noirs were worthy follow-ups that added something new to the previously told story.

Burt Lancaster just seemed like he was built to be a star, in every sense of the word. He towers like an oak tree but is coiled like a viper, and boasts a gymnast's physique and has a wicked politician's smile. Despite this mold, Lancaster actually shone brightest when he played roles that undermined his impervious appearance with an ever-collapsing spirit. It was simply fun to watch Lancaster get chipped away and knocked down a few pegs. It won him an Oscar for Elmer Gantry, it was the payoff for arguably his most legendary role in Sweet Smell of Success, and it perfectly propped him up in his debut role in The Killers. An adaptation of the iconic Ernest Hemingway short story of the same name, The Killers is a morbid existential murder mystery, asking not how someone was murdered but why that person was murdered and that person turned...

Sturgill Simpson is, once again, in the midst of an intriguing creative restart. The ambitious country/psych-rock/bluegrass artist announced earlier this summer that you can call him Johnny Blue Skies now, the better to match the melancholy tone of his eighth studio album, Passage du Desir. If you’re wondering why he’s doing all this, he’s got a bunch of shows coming up this late summer and fall that he’s calling the Why Not? Tour.

Fantasia Film Review: The Killers (2024) by Kim Jong-kwan, Roh Deok, Chang Hang-jun and Lee Myung-Se
Korean genre cinema has become a stable internationally as we witness a plethora of horror, science-fiction and thriller projects being released every year. Considering this wide array of works, Korean directors have offered their takes on popular tropes, themes and characters with the idea of the killer being one of many. Even though the output in mainstream cinema has followed the roots of this type of character more or less quite directly, the anthology feature “The Killers” aims to show the possibilities this concept offers, blending it with elements of horror and even going back to silent cinema. Directors Kim Jong-kwan, Roh Deok, Chang Hang-jun and Lee Myung-Se have created the four segments, each of which showcases one facet of the hitman character, while also experimenting with various aesthetic and narrative styles.

The Killers is one of the best crime movies of the 1940s, with a 100% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes. Hemingway's ability to master large ideas in brief stories is evident in The Killers. The 1946 film version adds mystery and suspense to Hemingway's story, making it a worthwhile and gripping watch.
In the 1940s, famous author Ernest Hemingway had one of his short stories adapted into a movie, and though this film has incredible ratings, it still doesn't have the reputation it deserves. Ernest Hemingway is a prolific writer from the 1920s to the 1950s. His writings, which are famously sparse and understated, remain classics in the literary world. Some of his most famous novels include A Farewell to Arms, The Old Man and the Sea, and The Sun Also Rises. Hemingway's distinct style still impacts literature, and his stories live on today, both on the page and on the screen.

The Killers paused their Wednesday evening concert at The O2 Arena in London to show a very important event: England beating the Netherlands and qualifying for the Euro 2024 final.
After performing ten songs during their “Rebel Diamonds Tour,” The Killers stopped playing upon completing “A Dustland Fairytale.” On the big screen behind them, the band then broadcast the final four minutes of stoppage time between England and the Netherlands’ semi-final matchup. When England finally won 2-1, red and white confetti rained down on the audience — and to make the moment even sweeter for the British audience, The Killers kicked off “Mr. Brightside.”

Ahead of the festival kicking off July 12 at Film at Lincoln Center, we’re pleased to premiere the action-packed exclusive trailer.
“For so many, Asian films start and end with Parasite or Everything Everywhere All At Once (who could blame them?), but the real action is happening in the trenches of Asian cinema, where audacious auteurs and daring debutantes are unleashing a tidal wave of talent that’s about to crash on American shores,” said Samuel Jamier, festival director and president of the New York Asian Film Foundation.

Saltburn’s infamous bathtub scene has been immortalized with a limited edition vinyl filled with “bath water” slated for release on September 29th via Bad World.
Watch a video showing the translucent vinyl filled with cloudy water below, and pick up your copy here.
The vinyl release is a direct nod to a viral scene in the film, which centers around an Oxford University student named Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan), who develops a friendship with the wealthy Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi).
Over time, that relationship turns into obsession when Oliver is invited for a summer stay at the eponymous estate owned by Felix’s family. In the scene, Oliver slurps up the remaining drops of semen-filled bathwater after watching Felix pleasure himself in the bathtub.
In addition to Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s resurgent “Murder on the Dancefloor,” the soundtrack features songs from Bloc Party, Mgmt, and the Killers. See the tracklist below.

There's nothing better than a simple story told well, but sometimes, audiences prefer something more challenging than a straightforward A to B plot. Filmmakers have been experimenting with non-linear storytelling since 1916 when D.W. Griffith released Intolerance, a controversial silent film epic that intercut four different narratives, all taking place at various periods in world history.
Decades later, the 1940s and 50s saw an explosion in the popularity of non-linear storytelling, with a series of films like Citizen Kane, The Killers, and Rashomon. All of these dabbled in disjointed storytelling, presenting similar events from multiple characters' perspectives. There is no doubt that this wave of films paved the way for Quentin Tarantino to adopt an atypical approach to his most successful film of all time, Pulp Fiction. Some might believe that the film's success can be wholly attributed to its sensational dialogue, but it was Pulp Fiction's unconventional structure that...
