The Songwriters Hall of Fame will recognize Stephen Schwartz — the arranger and composer behind the music from “Wicked,” “Godspell” and “Pippin” — as the recipient of the 2025 Johnny Mercer Award at the Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Gala, slated for June 12 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City.

The Johnny Mercer Award is the most prestigious honor bestowed by the Songwriters Hall of Fame, is exclusively reserved for a songwriter or songwriting team who has already been inducted in a prior year and whose body of work is of “such high quality and impact that it upholds the gold standard set by the legendary Johnny Mercer,” per the Shof. Schwartz was first inducted into the Hall in 2009.

Girls5eva features a talented cast, including the likes of Sara Bareilles, Busy Philipps, Paula Pell, and Renée Elise Goldsberry. The show centers on a one-hit-wonder girl group getting a second chance at fame. Netflix picked up Girls5eva for season 3 after Peacock canceled it.

Stephen Schwartz, the musical maestro behind such iconic shows as “Pippin” and “Wicked,” will be the subject of a new documentary from John Scheinfeld.

Entitled “Defying Gravity: From Godspell to Wicked, A Musical Journey,” the film will commence production in 2021 and will track the highs and lows of Schwartz’s remarkable career. Scheinfeld is no stranger to music industry tales, having previously directed “Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary” and “The U.S. vs. John Lennon.”

Schwartz, as a composer and lyricist, has penned some of the most recognizable numbers in stage and film history — a list of hits that includes “Corner of the Sky,” “Colors of the Wind,” and “Day by Day.” His credits include stage shows such as “Godspell” and films such as “Pocahontas” and “Prince of Egypt.” He’s also had some failures, notably the musical bomb “The Baker’s Wife.” Schwartz is an Oscar, Tony, and Grammy winner.

Orson Welles indisputably made a huge impact on the film industry, both in terms of technical proficiency and storytelling sophistication. However, Welles was never the biggest fan of films themselves. He just saw it as a way to tell stories he wanted to. That makes sense to me of how he approached filmmaking. Had he been a movie fan, I don't know if he would have thought so much outside of the box about to make them than he did. That isn't to say he didn't like all movies. Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford) takes as many baked goods as she can literally get her hands on in a new scene from Disney's Into the Woods. This scene likely takes place before last week's clip, where the Witch (Meryl Streep) reveals that one of the items The Baker (James Corden) and his wife (Emily Blunt) need to obtain is a "cape as red as blood," which naturally belongs to Little Red Riding Hood. This item is one of five needed in order for The Witch to reverse the curse placed on the young couple.

Lilla Crawford is seen singing her version of "To Grandmother's House," while scooping up several items, much to the chagrin of The Baker, who thinks she's nothing but a thief. Meryl Streep has the first poster for Christmas release Into the Woods all to herself and the Witch is always the marquee role in Stephen Sondheim's musical on stage. But Meryl will be campaigned supporting. The news isn't technically "official" but it soon will be so we're playing a little game of switcheroo on the Lead Actress and Supporting Actress Oscar Prediction Charts.

Technically this reversal (at least from our expectations) is  probably fine as categorizations go: The Witch is a showy role but it's not a huge one and The Baker's Wife (Emily Blunt) is just as much of a major focal point of the show (winning the lead actress Tony for Joanna Gleason in the first production) and the wife has the clearest arc. So Blunt is our leading contender.

London - My dad took me to see "Into the Woods" during its original run in 1988.  It was my first Broadway show and Stephen Sondheim's twisted take on classic fairy tales has been amongst my favorite musicals ever since. It's full of beautiful, complicated music and I notice new lyrical nuances every time I listened to the soundtrack. Fabio Viviani, "Top Chef" Season 5 "Fan Favorite" and host of Yahoo's Chow Ciao, took a practical approach for his choice, opting for the "Goodfellas" scene that shows Paulie slicing garlic with a razor. "What a way to get the perfect thin garlic! You can almost smell the garlic and tomatoes and meat cooking in the scene.
