“The Age of Disclosure,” which premiered today at SXSW, is a documentary that millions of people are going to want to see. It’s a movie that purports to offer incontrovertible evidence that spaceships from other worlds are visiting us. And if you attempt to argue — as I will do in this review — that what you’re seeing in the film isn’t what you think you’re seeing, you’re likely to be attacked as a heretic and a denier of reality, someone who turns a blind eye to the proof that’s sitting right in front of them.
The evidence, if you truly look at it, isn’t all that compelling: blurry black-and-white U.S. government video footage that shows tiny objects zipping forward over the surface of the water. It’s the footage of aerial phenomena witnessed by Navy pilots that we all saw back in 2021, when it was declassified.

Science fiction has long been the domain of some of the best movies in cinema, from classics like The War of the Worlds to modern epics like Avatar. Exploring everything from space travel to artificial intelligence, these movies have seen varying success at the box office, with some being more niche than others. Some of the genre's best movies are actually the perfect entry point to newbies looking to enjoy the possibilities and unique ideas of sci-fi.
Finding a gateway into a new genre can be tough, but classics earn that status for good reason, often appealing to the mainstream in a way other movies don't. While some films can be too long, overly pretentious or ask too much of their audience, others are just accessible enough to have almost universal appeal. From action movies to family adventures, these stories are a great way to leave the audience wanting more from science fiction.

Due out in 2026, Steven Spielberg’s secretive film – said to be about UFOs – has begun filming in New Jersey.
Work on Steven Spielberg’s next film, due for release in 2026, is officially underway, with its stars spotted filming outdoor scenes in New Jersey earlier this week.
Local news outlet NJ.com (via World of Reel) has a couple of candid snaps from the production, with co-stars Emily Blunt and Wyatt Russell shown wearing sensible winter coats.
The accompanying report says that the stars were performing a scene which involved “grasping each other’s hands and embracing”, with a smoky gas station providing the backdrop.
The production is shrouded in an unusual level of secrecy even by Hollywood standards. It’s a little over a year away from release and yet we haven’t seen a synopsis or even a confirmed title. At one stage, it was said to be called...

Netflix’s “The Witcher” puts its spin on “The Little Mermaid” in “The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep.” Set during the events of Season 1, the new animated film adapts from Andrzej Sapkowski’s short story “A Little Sacrifice” (which was itself inspired by the classic fairytale).
The film follows Geralt and Jaskier to a seaside town to investigate attacks, only to wind up in the middle of a long-brewing conflict between the humans and merpeople before it turns into all-out war. The adaptation brings some of its own spin to the tale, featuring voices that “Witcher” fans will recognize from the games and live-action series alike — as well as some newcomers.
Here’s your guide to the cast of “The Witcher: Sirens of The Deep,” which characters they play and where you’ve seen (or heard) them before.

Art carries with it a reflection of the world. The media we make, whether the times are turbulent or peaceful, shows us who we are, or were, or what could be, and it's almost always political. Science fiction is even more political by nature, as it draws from big ideas about technology and its applications, or arguments about gender and individuality, or how we treat an alien people we barely understand. These concepts are derided by misinformed individuals as 'woke,' as if cultural and social awareness is some disease, but these individuals also like to act as if 'woke' is some recent phenomena.
Unfortunately, this behavior is generational, as some of science fiction's greatest minds often had to obscure their identity as they were -- gasp! -- female, such as James Tiptree Jr. (Alice Sheldon) or C.J. Cherryh, or numerous people of color, like the Hugo-winning Samuel R. Delany.

Fritz Lang's 1927 sci-fi epic "Metropolis" regularly appears on lists of the best movies of all time, and is certainly one of the most important works of science fiction ever produced. "Metropolis" takes place in an industrialized future where the world's wealthy live in meticulously constructed towers, and commute via fantastical blimps and flying machines. They engage in frivolous romantic misunderstandings, and enjoy lazing about in gardens eating rich foods. Meanwhile, under the city, impoverished laborers are literally working themselves to death to keep the machines running.
One of the city's most prominent rich brats is Freder (Gustav Fröhlich) who, by happenstance, witnesses a peaceful labor protest. He becomes instantly enamored of Maria (Brigitte Helm), the pacifist ruler of the movement, and becomes curious as to what the lives of laborers are actually like. He moves underground and sees the sweat, oil, and terror first had. The machines, he feels,...

H.G. Wells' "The War of the Worlds" has, since it was first released in the pages of Pearson's Magazine and Cosmopolitan in 1897 as a serial, and the following year as a novel, been among the works of literature most frequently adapted for media. While the most memorable adaptations are Orson Welles' infamous 1938 broadcast on CBS Radio and Steven Spielberg's take with 2005's War of the Worlds, there have been countless direct adaptations, as well as works that share its DNA, like Independence Day, and parodies, like "The Day the Earth Looked Stupid" story in The Simpsons' "Treehouse of Horror Xvii."...

On the road to creating the greatest science-fiction parody series in the history of television, Matt Groening set loose the single most scientifically literate writers’ room possible on all the tropes and clichés of the genre back when he premiered Futurama on Fox in 1999. Originally conceived as a part-pastiche-part-mockery of all science-fiction media, Futurama covers classic and contemporary visions of the future by viewing them through a simultaneously insightful and stupid lens that lets us laugh at every doomsday prediction ever made with the accompaniment of a foreboding brass section on broadcast television.

Like a rolling stone gathers no moss, Timothee Chalamet’s awards campaign for A Complete Unknown continues unabated. On Friday, NBC announced Chalamet will host the Jan. 25 edition of Saturday Night Live and serve as the night’s musical guest. The expectation is that Chalamet, who plays Bob Dylan in the new film, will perform Dylan songs on the broadcast.
Regardless of the playlist, Chalamet’s dual role on the broadcast will make some Saturday Night Live history. He’s among a select few non-professional singers or traditional musicians who have served as SNL hosts and performed as musicians on the same show, joining names like Lily Tomlin, Desi Arnaz, and Deion Sanders.
The SNL appearance is the latest high-profile stop on Chalamet’s press tour and awards campaign for A Complete Unknown. The actor has spent the last month promoting his work in James Mangold’s film – including a...

An MCU star's adaptation of an H.G. Wells classic gets a glowing review from VFX artists 22 years after its release. The English author, a pioneer in science fiction, has seen his imaginative works frequently adapted to the screen since the 1930s. Early adaptations include Island of Lost Souls (1932), The Invisible Man (1933), Things to Come (1936), and The Man Who Could Work Miracles (1937), which captured audiences with their groundbreaking special effects and blended the author's thought-provoking themes with cinematic spectacle.
Later adaptations continued to bring the sci-fi author's visionary stories to life, and often reflected contemporary concerns. The War of the Worlds (1953) and The Time Machine (1960) highlighted Cold War fears and a fascination with time travel, respectively. Subsequent remakes – such as The Island of Dr. Moreau, Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds (2005) starring Tom Cruise, and the visually updated The Time Machine (2002) – introduced new interpretations of the author's themes, and almost always with impressive visual effects.

The Twilight Zone season 1, episode 3: “Mr. Denton on Doomsday”.The suburbs dream of violence. Asleep in their drowsy villas, sheltered by the benevolent shopping malls, they wait patiently for the nightmares that will wake them into a more passionate world.—J. G. Ballard, Kingdom ComeRod Serling cuts a striking figure in American iconography. A handsome, shadowy silhouette in a stark suit and tie with a cigarette perched between two fingers, Serling would rhapsodize dark legends from the depths of the nation’s fractured postwar psyche every week on The Twilight Zone (1959–64). Born in Syracuse, New York, Serling maintained his quintessentially East Coast everyman aesthetic even after moving to Los Angeles, following the major players in the television industry. Dark brows furrowed, mouth set in a stern, straight line—Serling wasn’t a vain man, but he was conscious that his image projected this persona and always ensured that he...

Novelization fans know the majority of literary tie-ins stick closely to their source materials rather than stray from them, but whenever one does make notable changes, they take notice. Gremlins is one such case. Indeed, the late George Gipe stayed true to the spirit of that Christmas spectacle we have all come to love and celebrate each winter, however, the author also took artistic license — primarily with the adorable face of the Gremlins franchise, to whom he gave an origin that is truly out of this world.
Everyone knows the gist of Gremlins by now: A small American town is overrun by monsters around Christmas, and only one young man — along with his strange new pet named “Gizmo” — can put an end to the holiday horror. Gipe, who also penned the novelizations for Back to the Future and Explorers, didn’t think to change the basic story of Joe Dante...

To achieve the status of a true icon in Hollywood, actors must work consistently to prove their skills across years and decades, although this can also mean that some legacies end better than others. Although many performers are immediately associated with success and prestige, when looking at the final entries in some stars' filmographies, certain movies tarnish their incredible legacies. This may be due to an actor's declining popularity in their later years or just strange creative decisions that led to the release of lackluster final movies.
Some of the greatest actors of all time have an unfortunate final film that failed to live up to their best work. While many of these final movies had their merit, they just did not have the same level of gravitas or impact as the films that made them famous and that they will be primarily remembered for. The Witcher season 4 doesn't have a release date yet, which is no surprise given how the show has recast its lead role with Liam Hemsworth. Geralt of Rivia's mentor will also look different, as Vesemir's actor also won't be returning due to scheduling conflicts. But according to Netflix, the rest of The Witcher's regular cast will be returning, barring those who died during the climactic end of season 3.
The Witcher season 4 will also be bringing on several new cast members, such as fan-favorite vampire Regis, who will be played by Laurence Fishburne, as well as Danny Woodburn as Geralt's friend, the Dwarf swordsman Zoltan Chivay. With these additions, The Witcher's next outing will have a star-studded cast as the Netflix show reaches a tense point of adapting Andrzej Sapkowski's books.

Sci-fi movies of the 1950s reflected Cold War anxieties and explored futuristic themes from popular novels of the era. The 1950s saw adaptations of classic sci-fi novels like The War of the Worlds and Journey to the Center of the Earth, revitalizing their themes. Films like The Thing From Another World and Invasion of the Body Snatchers played on fears of the time, influenced by the space race and the aftermath of the Second World War.
The 1950s produced plenty of memorable sci-fi book adaptations, as filmmakers sought inspiration from both pulp fiction and well-respected authors. In the aftermath of the Second World War, and with the Cold War in full swing, sci-fi in the 1950s reflected the common anxieties of the era. The atomic age and the space race both represented frightening new frontiers in the world of science, and many sci-fi movies also borrowed from the horror genre.

Found footage is a horror movie genre that has always teetered on the line between fact and fiction, using techniques like handheld cameras and unscripted dialogue to add an extra level of authenticity to the film. Horror films like The Blair Witch Project and Cannibal Holocaust proved how convincing the concept of found footage can be, leading their audiences to believe the events seen on screen actually happened. A subgenre of found footage, known as mockumentaries, is made in the style of a documentary. These features analyze a fictitious person or event using "personal recorded footage" and "interviews" as a means to tell their stories.
The mockumentary format has been used in a variety of film genres. However, horror has been able to effectively use this setup to a point where it would not be a stretch to stream one of these movies and believe that everything unfolding on screen has happened.

Some sci-fi remakes can elevate original concepts, like the emotionally impactful Invisible Man (2020). Other examples, like Dredd (2012), improve upon their predecessors by sticking to the popular source material. In all instances, great sci-fi movie remakes bring something new to the table rather than retelling the same old story.
While some sci-fi movie remakes can detract from stellar source material, others can take a great idea to the next level. In the modern film industry, establishing a successful original IP is the holy grail, with both remakes and sequels providing a particularly lucrative market. Often, these follow-ups can feel like cheap cash grabs trying to capitalize on an audience's existing goodwill. On rare occasions, however, a sci-fi movie remake can not just bring something new to the table, but also improve on what came before.

It's impossible to overstate Orson Welles' impact on American media, from his infamous radio adaptation of The War of the Worlds to the groundbreaking and hugely influential Citizen Kane — which Welles directed, co-wrote, and starred in at only twenty-five years old — to his incomparable performance as Harry Lime in The Third Man. Yet many modern moviegoers were first introduced to Welles not through any of these important works, but through an animated movie that had just as great an impact on its young audience as any Best Picture winner, and which turned out to be Welles' final performance before his death: 1986's The Transformers: The Movie.

Sci-fi films pave the way for new techniques and styles in cinema, influencing other genres and improving the medium as a whole. While many sci-fi films have been successfully remade for modern audiences, influential classics like Metropolis and The Sorcerers are still waiting for their turn. Movies like They Live and Demon Seed explore relevant themes of aliens and AI, making them ripe for remakes that could captivate a modern audience.
Sci-fi as a genre has led to some of the best films and stories of all time, but several films that helped define the genre happened decades ago and are yet to receive a remake for modern audiences. Sci-fi is often the first place where new techniques and experimental styles in film are employed. These films then influence other genres and help to improve the medium as a whole.

Jonathan Banks's role in "Constellation" is a chance to make up for his disappointing 60-second cameo in "The Expanse" 9 years ago. "Constellation" is an exciting sci-fi project created by Peter Harness and directed by Michelle MacLaren, and it also includes elements from the horror genre. Jonathan Banks will play a Nobel Prize-winning physicist in "Constellation" named Henry, who is involved in Jo's research and will have a significant role in the show's plot.
Jonathan Banks's role in the upcoming sci-fi series Constellation might be the perfect way of making amends for what happened nine years ago on another science-fiction TV show. Constellation is Apple TV+'s new sci-fi project created by Peter Harness and directed by Michelle MacLaren, which is pretty exciting. Constellation's trailer already suggests the show will also include some elements from the horror genre, which is also something interesting about this upcoming release.

A minor work from a major filmmaker, Presence is Oscar-winner Steven Soderbergh’s first official foray into supernatural horror. Shot primarily in a single, standalone set over less than two weeks and a limited shooting schedule, Presence doesn’t reinvent or reimagine tropes associated with haunted house or supernatural ghost stories. Far from it. What Presence does do — in Soderbergh’s approach to formal experimentation within predetermined boundaries — it does far better and far more effectively than the vast majority of filmmakers currently writing and directing within the horror space could achieve within the same preset parameters. Working from a seemingly simple, straightforward script written by David Koepp, Soderbergh removes any...

Orson Welles' radio adaptation of The War of the Worlds caused some panic, but the extent of the disturbance has been exaggerated. The format of Welles' play was innovative and simulated a genuine radio broadcast, leading some listeners to believe it was real news. Despite the backlash, the controversy surrounding the broadcast actually boosted Welles' career and solidified his place in the entertainment industry.
The mere mention of Orson Welles tends to bring to mind the same incident for everyone, but the facts of the infamous radio broadcast don't completely align with the folklore. Although Welles did broadcast a radio adaptation of Hg Wells' sci-fi novel, The War of the Worlds, the stories regarding the panic it caused his listeners have been greatly exaggerated. However, there is an element of truth to the tale. Either way, there is still a rich history to the man behind every Orson Welles movie.

Hollywood has often turned to the fantasy genre to tell some of the greatest stories ever put to film. From epic, high fantasy to grounded adventure in unique worlds, the genre has racked up an impressive number of awards, solid prestige and a dedicated fan base. Often turning to novels and mythology, the fantasy genre is the highest, purest form of escapism there is, telling stories detached from the real world and populated with magic, elves, monsters and more.
Fantasy movies such as Lord of the Rings have entrenched their status as genuine classics and masterpieces not in need of a remake or reboot. However, there are certainly examples of fantasy films that deserve another look, whether due to a poor execution, stories left unfinished or unrealized full potential. Nickelodeon's 90s Halloween specials helped capture the essence of what made Halloween entertaining for young audiences. Nickelodeon's Halloween specials from shows like Rugrats, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters and Hey Arnold! all balanced spooky moments with the fun of innocence. Nickelodeon's live-action Halloween specials on shows like Clarissa Explains It All and The Adventures of Pete and Pete showed that the animated quirkiness of other shows could easily translate to spooky live-action entertainment.
There is no time of the year as mysteriously enchanting as the Halloween season. For TV viewers who grew up in the 1990s, Nickelodeon was the go-to network for Halloween specials -- both animated and live-action alike. Shows like The Adventures of Pete and Pete, Doug, Rugrats, and Hey Arnold! are just a few of the common programs Nickelodeon rolled out that helped define the Halloween experience for so many.
There's a reason these specials still resonate with audiences today.

The 1950s are considered the “Golden Age” of science fiction cinema, and that’s not just hyperbole. By many accounts, more than 200 sci-fi movies were released during that decade. And while the film industry had sporadically produced quality sci-fi in the years before—ranging from Aelita (1924) to Metropolis (1927), to The Invisible Man (1933)—it wasn’t until the 1950s that classic after classic began to arrive like riches from a long-lost hidden treasure.
And when we say classic, we mean films that essentially created the template for all science fiction movies that followed. Just look at this list. The first half of the decade brought us The Thing from Another World, When Worlds Collide, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Godzilla, and Them!, while the second half ushered in This Island Earth, Forbidden Planet, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Incredible Shrinking Man, The Blob, The Fly,...

Many new and returning cast members will bring The Witcher season 3 to life. Based on the books and short stories by Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher TV series follows Geralt—a mutated monster hunter for hire—who fights to protect his adopted child, Ciri, from individuals who want her untapped supernatural powers. The Witcher season 1 followed the choppy narrative of the short stories while season 2 focused a lot more on the novels, especially Blood of Elves. Showrunner Lauren Hissrich shared with TechRadar that The Witcher season 3 explores the plot of the book The Time of Contempt.

The reason so many tragicomic stories are told in song and onscreen about authority structures severely overreacting to silly situations is that it happens — All. The. Time.
And now, here in real life, we add “How to Blow Up a Pipeline,” the Toronto Film Festival darling about radicalization – and not at all instructive in the rapid unscheduled disassembly of pipelines – which has inspired 35 messages from 23 separate state and federal law enforcement agencies to the FBI, according to a report in Rolling Stone.
The magazine obtained FBI documents, including an alert issued around the time of the film’s April 7 release, warning that “Pipeline” could inspire terrorist attacks on energy targets. Rolling Stone called the flurry of agency messages “a veritable alphabet soup of angst,” and noted that oil and gas infrastructure has remained quietly operational in the United States in weeks past.

While many of us may still be feeling the icy chill of winter, Scream Factory already has their sights set on a scare-filled spring, as they've announced new 4K Uhd releases for Skyline, Brotherhood of the Wolf, and The Haunting (1999) this May, as well as a Blu-ray double feature for Conquest of Space and I Married a Monster from Outer Space:
From Scream Factory: When sunrise arrives two hours early in the form of a haunting light from an unknown source, a group of friends watch in terror as people across the city are drawn outside and swept into massive alien ships that have blotted out the L.A. skyline.
