Anyone who's watched the hit Apple TV+ series "Severance" knows that it takes inspiration from many, many pop culture juggernauts that came before it. "Lost" is absolutely a reference point for the show's creator Dan Erickson, as is the famous anthology series "The Twilight Zone" — and apparently, a very specific installment of another anthology show, "Black Mirror," helped Erickson come up with the idea for "Severance."

The episode in question is "White Christmas," a standalone episode of "Black Mirror" that aired on the British network Channel 4 and was broadcast in the United States just before the entire series moved to Netflix for all future seasons. The British anthology series Black Mirror has captivated fans since it launched in 2011. Created by Charlie Brooker, the sci-fi, high-tech-charged, The Twilight Zone-like anthology series moved to Netflix after its first two series when four more were released in 2016, 2017, 2019, and, after a long wait, 2023. There was also the 2014 “White Christmas” special starring Jon Hamm and the interactive movie Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. Each season offers unique, standalone stories that run the gamut, serving as cautionary tales about technology taken too far.

Almost two years after the sixth season graced fans with a mixed bag of episodes, including the stand-out “Beyond the Sea” episode starring Aaron Paul and Josh Hartnett as astronauts in space able to transfer their consciousnesses to body replicas back on Earth, a seventh season is forthcoming. And it promises to be wild in more ways than one.

"Black Mirror" just dropped a trailer for its seventh season, providing not only a closer look at the show's six new episodes but also their release date on Netflix.

On April 10, Netflix will drop six installments of Charlie Brooker's critically acclaimed and massively popular anthology series, and even though we already know that this season of "Black Mirror" would break tradition and return to a previous story — specifically, the beloved season 4 episode "U.S.S. Callister," which stars Cristin Milioti, Jimmi Simpson, Billy Magnussen, and more — it's still pretty exciting to see those stars reappear in this trailer. Not only that, but Will Poulter and Asim Chaudhry, who appeared in the standalone interactive special "Black Mirror: Bandersnatch," also seem to show up in the trailer as their "Bandersnatch" characters Colin Ritman and Mohan Thakur. That means we may be getting another glimpse at that particular corner of the "Black Mirror" universe as well.

One of the most disturbing shows on television is finally returning, and Netflix dropped a first look at what fans can expect. “Black Mirror” Season 7 will premiere six new episodes on April 10.

I actually went to see a 4K re-release of the original Black Christmas last night here in Montreal. After seven decades, a movie more than has enough rights to cement itself as a Christmas classic. That's the case with the 1954 film White Christmas. The movie features the songs of legendary composer and songwriter Irving Berlin. With an all-star cast of Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, Danny Kaye, and Vera Ellen, the film is still a hit with audiences seventy years later. Just as the film celebrates the milestone, it's entered Prime Video's Top 10. The film already got a special 4K treatment earlier this year to honor the anniversary as well.

There's no doubt that a lot of Christmas classics that families adore and rewatch every holiday season have problematic elements. Most of these television specials were made between the 1960s and 1970s, building stories on inappropriate and sometimes outright offensive tropes. But one Rankin/Bass Christmas special, Jack Frost, actually axes a troubling trope, making it a timeless classic that both women and men can enjoy.

Jack Frost isn't one of the most popular Rankin/Bass Christmas specials. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town and Frosty the Snowman are likely the first specials to come to mind when they think of the holidays. Perhaps the biggest draw for the nostalgics is “Emmet Otters Just Band Christams.” For the older crowd, 1954’s “White Christmas” and 1946’s “It’s a Wonderful Life” can be found here as well. Also, don’t sleep on my favorite guilty pleasure, “Jingle All the Way.”

When it comes to holiday classics, there are few films that capture the zeitgeist and delight of the season better than White Christmas. Its lighthearted whimsy and timeless Irving Berlin music has made it a picture that transcends generations. But it may very well be its cast of characters that help the movie stand out as the holiday crème de la crème. Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye are undoubtedly one of the screen’s best pairings as Bob Wallace and Phil Davis, and, of course, the movie would be nothing without Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen as sisters, Betty and Judy Haynes. Often considered one of the best on-screen siblings of all time, the two are still a delight to watch throughout the various musical numbers. The 2024 CMA Country Christmas special is here!

The Country Music Association is airing its annual hour-long holiday TV special on Tuesday, December 3 at on ABC at 8 p.m. Et.

The special was filmed in Nashville, Tenn., featuring a bunch of performers across genres from gospel to country pop.

The special will first air on ABC then will be available to stream the next day on Hulu or Disney+.

For the second year in a row, the special will be hosted by country stars Amy Grant and Trisha Yearwood.

The two are set to perform Amy‘s “Sing Your Praise to the Lord” and Tom Stacks‘ “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” together.

They will also have solo performances, with Amy singing “Tennessee Christmas” and Trisha performing a “fun and festive Christmas medley,” via the Country Music Association.

In addition to announcing the hosts, ABC and the Country Music Association confirmed the list of Country music superstars set to take the stage during the holiday special. Disney had used that well for years as their TV specials were always unique, mixing in original songs with some fun stars. By the 1980s, they were working with Smith-Hemion, which is well known for some award-winning variety specials featuring stars such as Frank Sinatra, Barbara Streisand, Elvis, Bette Middler, and more. Black Mirror fans were stoked to learn that the ensemble cast of Season 4's "USS Callister" will be reprising their roles in Season 7. Series creator Charlie Brooker explained why they developed a continuing story for that episode.

Black Mirror Season 7 will include a sequel story to "USS Callister," Season 4's Emmy Award-winning episode. A previous teaser revealed new actors will appear in the upcoming season, and keen-eyed fans immediately noticed the "USS Callister" cast was included in the lineup. In an interview with Collider, series creator Charlie Brooker confirmed that episode ended with a tease of more stories to explore; and unlike most of Black Mirror's installments, "USS Callister" featured protagonists audiences immediately rooted for. Classic sci-fi fans also warmed up to the Star Trek homage and adaptation.

Kathryn Crosby, the actor, singer and widow of Bing Crosby, died Friday evening of natural causes at her home in Hillsborough, Calif. She was 90.

A representative for the Crosby family announced the news.

Crosby starred in more than 20 films over the course of her career, including “The Wild Party” (1956), “Operation Mad Ball” (1957), “The 7th Voyage of Sinbad” (1958) and “Anatomy of a Murder” (1959). She typically performed under the stage names Kathryn Grant and Kathryn Grandstaff.

Crosby appeared frequently on her husband Bing’s “Merrie Olde Christmas” specials and hosted “The Kathryn Crosby Show,” a 30-minute talk show based in San Francisco. Following the death of the famed singer and actor at the age of 74 in 1977, she performed in several stage productions such as the 1996 Broadway revival of “State Fair.” She also hosted the charitable Crosby National Golf Tournament in Bermuda Run, N.C., for many years.

Crosby died peacefully at her home in Hillsborough, California, surrounded by her family, according to a family spokesperson.

Billed under her stage name, Kathryn Grant, the Houston native made five features for famed film noir director Phil Karlson, including Tight Spot (1955), The Phenix City Story (1955) and The Brothers Rico (1957).

She also played the younger sister of Martha Hyer’s character in another film noir, the Blake Edwards-directed Mister Cory (1957), starring Tony Curtis, and portrayed a budding trapeze artist in The Big Circus (1959), starring Victor Mature.

Some fictional characters are so intrinsically tied to the people who portrayed them that it's nearly impossible to picture anyone else in that role. Columbo, the disheveled detective who helped take down the bad guys on TV over three decades on the series of the same name, just couldn't be anyone but Peter Falk. That's like suggesting someone other than Alan Alda play the television version of Hawkeye on "M.A.S.H."! Dressed in an eternally-wrinkled, too-big trenchcoat and always chomping on a cigar, Falk brings both a unique appearance and performance to the character, looking and acting unlike any other cop on TV. Without Falk, "Columbo" may never have been successful, and it certainly wouldn't have been the same. Back when the series was first being developed, however, the people in charge had some very different performers in mind.
