But the former Doris Mary Ann von Kappelhoff would make an even bigger splash as a star on the silver screen in a series of romantic comedies opposite Rock Hudson — who would become a lifelong friend — starting with 1959’s “Pillow Talk,” the source of her only Oscar nomination, along with 1961’s “Lover Come Back” and 1964’s “Send Me No Flowers.

When teenager Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff sang along to Ella Fitzgerald on the radio, the Cincinnati native could never have predicted that, as Doris Day, she would go on to become one of the 20th century’s most beloved performers, first as a vocalist, then as an actress and then finally as an outspoken champion for the rights of animals.

But it was those radio sing-alongs that inspired Alma Welz Kappelhoff to send her daughter to a vocal coach, and by the time Doris was 17, she was singing for bandleader Barney Rapp, who convinced her to change her name to a more marquee-friendly length.

Day would go on to sing for the likes of Jimmy James and Bob Crosby, but it was her collaboration with Les Brown and His Band of Renown in the late 1940s that would rocket her to national stardom with hits like “Sentimental Journey” and “‘Till the End of Time.

As a singer, Doris Day had a warm voice that captivated millions of post-war record-buyers. As an actress, she was a top box office attraction and her name became shorthand for nearly all 1960s romantic comedies: “It’s a Doris Day kind of film.” As a personality, she was loved by the public as a freckle-faced, common-sense gal who seemed like a lot of fun.

Privately, her life was peppered with divorces, tales of spousal abuse, bankruptcy and even connections to the Manson family. The difference between reality and her image were night and Day, so to speak. But it was a very different time. The public didn’t want to hear about the darkness; they just loved her sunniness. And that’s what fans will continue to remember.

She started out as the “girl singer” in the Big Band era, and the song “Sentimental Journey” in 1945 put her on the map.

Doris Day may have died with a reputation of being Hollywood’s most scrubbed-clean and wholesome girl-next-door type. But she made it to the big screen courtesy her warmly simmering and easily quavering vocal tones. Before films beckoned, she was a featured vocalist with big band-era kings such as Bob Crosby (Bing’s brother) and Les Brown and His Band of Renown, the latter of which recorded Day sunnily crooning “Sentimental Journey” and “My Dreams Are Getting Better All the Time.”

Terence Davies’ films deal with repressed desire, longing, and emotional pain that springs from the depths of his characters’ souls, and yet, in person, the great British auteur is undoubtedly the funniest person in the room. He is all smiles and jokes as we sit down to discuss his glorious Sunset Song, entering a limited release this week, and a retrospective of his work at the Museum of the Moving Image. It makes sense that he is joyful rather than somber, because it makes one feel a sort of relief knowing that levity was welcomed between takes on haunting dramas such as Distant Voices, Still Lives and The Deep Blue Sea. In Sunset Song, Davies takes on the first part of a trilogy written by Lewis Grassic Gibbons, in which we meet farm girl Chris Guthrie (a luminous Agyness Deyn) as she is forced to take on the reins of her life in pre-wwi Scotland.

Singer, dancer and actor whose Hollywood career was overshadowed by her marriage to Errol Flynn

The gifted singer, dancer and actor Patrice Wymore, who has died aged 87, had the misfortune to be typecast in secondary roles at Warner Bros studios in the 1950s, and to be known as the third wife of the Hollywood star Errol Flynn.

The 23-year-old Wymore and the 41-year-old Flynn got married after co-starring in Rocky Mountain (1950), a minor western in which he played an army officer who rescues her from marauding Indians, though they had no love scenes together on screen. It was Wymore's second film, while Flynn was a veteran of more than three dozen movies. It was the beginning of her film career, while his was on the slide. Both were under contract to Warner Bros.

At the time, MGM musicals reigned supreme, though Warner Bros had Doris Day, a top box-office singing star.

The answers can be as varied as the nominees themselves. As the annual "31 Days of Oscar" festival continues on Turner Classic Movies, each night is themed to all the candidates in a certain category in a certain year.

Birthday wishes go out to Doris Day! The iconic actress, singer and activist turns 91 today (April 3) -- or so it's assumed. The actual year of her birthday is rumored to be 1922, although some reports say it's 1923 or 1924.

Best known for her roles in movies like "Love Me or Leave Me," "Pillow Talk" and "That Touch of Mink," Day broke into Hollywood in the 1950s. But being a beloved singer -- her hit "Sentimental Journey" with Les Brown was an anthem during World War II -- Day also starred in Alfred Hitchcock's 1956 suspense thriller "The Man Who Knew Too Much" and sang two songs in the film, including "Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)," which won an Academy Award for Best Original Song.

Sundance Film Festival kicks off out in Park City today, bringing some of the year’s most anticipated independent films to the big screen. Following shortly after will be the Berlinale next month, and SXSW in March, which has just debuted a very promising initial line-up. And now the first big film festival on our shores, the Glasgow Film Festival, has announced its line-up, and it is absolutely exceptional.

Opening the events on Valentine’s Day next month will be Régis Roinsard’s Populaire, starring Romain Duris, Déborah François, and Bérénice Bejo, getting its UK premiere.

And closing the festival will be Joss Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing, the great writer-director’s contemporary adaptation of the classic Shakespeare play. Los Angeles — Doris Day, America's pert, honey-voiced sweetheart of the 1950s and 1960s, beguiled audiences with her on-screen romances opposite top Hollywood leading men Cary Grant, Rock Hudson and Jack Lemmon.

She adored and misses them all, says the 88-year-old Day. But her deepest yearning is reserved for her late son Terry Melcher, a record producer whose touch and voice are part of Day's first album in nearly two decades.

"Oh, I wish he could be here and be a part of it. I would just love that. But it didn't work out that way," Day said, her voice subdued. It's a voice rarely heard since she withdrew from Hollywood in the early 1980s to the haven she made for herself in the Northern California town of Carmel, where Clint Eastwood was once mayor.

"My Heart," set for a Dec. 2 U.S. release, has induced Day to edge back to public attention.

Doris Day may have been — once again — absurdly bypassed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Board of Governors, but at least she'll be getting some much deserved recognition from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (Lafca). Day, 87, has been named the recipient of the L.A. Critics' Career Achievement Award of 2011 — or 2012, as the ceremony will take place early next year. (This year's winners will be announced on December 11.) The first Lafca award winners were announced in 1975. The annual Career Achievement Award was instituted the following year. Since then, a mere four women have been recognized for their contributions to the motion picture industry: actresses Barbara Stanwyck (1981) and Myrna Loy (1983), editor Dede Allen (1999), and now Doris Day. Male recipients — sometimes two per year — range from auteur John Cassavetes to comedian/auteur Jerry Lewis, from producer John Calley to silent-era pioneer Allan Dwan, from animator Chuck Jones to filmmaker Akira Kurosawa.

Doris Day, Duffy Doris Day, 87, and Duffy in a new photo to be used by Sony Music to promote Day's upcoming record "My Heart," the legendary actress-singer's 29th album and her first after a seventeen-year hiatus. "My Heart" is to be released in the United Kingdom on Sept. 5. It'll be available on CD and digital-download formats. "It was brought to my attention that the recordings were in storage and Sony was interested in releasing them," Day explained. "So I listened to them and at first had some misgivings, but after they were re-mastered, I liked them and hoped my fans would too." "Coming off the success of Taxi Driver (1976), Scorsese secured a big budget and MGM sound stages for what was meant to be his tribute to and deconstruction of classic Hollywood musicals, but the tribute got lost somewhere in the deconstruction." Leave it to The Daily Beast to get Scorsese talking about films. Not that it would be hard to do. The man is “Mr. Cinema.” He directs, produces and he even has his own nonprofit organization for preserving classic films, The Film Foundation. The director may have toyed with other genres during his lifetime, but the one people would discuss aplenty is his contributions to crime cinema. To think of Scorsese is to think of Goodfellas, Casino and The Departed, despite also directing films like After Hours and The Last Temptation of Christ. As he turns his attention to the small screen with HBO’s Boardwalk Empire – touted as being the network’s costliest production to date – the director lists off his 15 favorite gangster movies. An explosive new biography has exposed Robert De Niro's bizarre pursuit of Whitney Houston and his father's homosexual affairs with a series of celebrated artistic and literary figures. Author John Baxter claims artist Robert De Niro Sr., who died in 1993, was the gay lover of poet Robert Duncan, playwright Tennessee Williams and painter Jackson Pollock - despite being married to the Raging Bull star's mother, Virginia Admiral, for several months during World War II. In his book De Niro: A Biography, he also reveals De Niro Jr.'s aggressive pursuit of Whitney Houston when she was a young, rising star.
