Song and dance man or gangster? Few stars of Hollywood’s Golden Era could claim they were equally well known for two such diverse genres. Yet, the legendary James Cagney worked hard to be able to make such a claim.
He was born on July 17, 1899, in New York City. His family was poor, and Cagney was sickly as a child. While growing up in a rough neighborhood, he learned a variety of skills, including tap dancing, street fighting, baseball and boxing. When he was 19, his father died, and he took odd jobs to help support his mother and siblings. On a whim, he auditioned for a role of a chorus girl in a local production. Although he had never had professional training, he landed the role and learned the dances from watching the other performers – and it never bothered him to dress as a girl and perform. Doris Day was the Oscar-nominated actress who passed away in 2019 at the age of 97. She excelled in musicals and romantic comedies, bringing a sense of edge and humor to her squeaky-clean demeanor. Doris Day finds herself the target of a malevolent murderer in Midnight Lace (1960), the performer’s last dramatic role prior to her retirement from filmmaking just eight years later in With Six You Get Eggroll (1968). Yes, Doris Day, who died on May 13 at age 97 after a bout with pneumonia, was the all-American girl next door — but she was so much more. The funny, sunny blonde with the perky disposition, a sprinkle of freckles and a dazzling smile started off as a big band singer whose first hit was 1945’s “Sentimental Journey” with Les Brown & his Band of Renown. She would record more than 650 songs from 1947 to 1967, making her one of the biggest-selling recording artists of the 20th century, and was honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 20008.
But the former Doris Mary Ann von Kappelhoff would make an even bigger splash as a star on the silver screen in a series of romantic comedies opposite Rock Hudson — who would become a lifelong friend — starting with 1959’s “Pillow Talk,” the source of her only Oscar nomination, along with 1961’s “Lover Come Back” and 1964’s “Send Me No Flowers.

Iconic actress, singer, and animal welfare activist Doris Day sadly passed away two months after celebrating her 97th birthday and Hollywood is paying tribute to her. Day was one of the most famous celebrities of the 1950s and 1960s and was in good spirits while celebrating her birthday. However, she developed a cough, which then turned to bronchitis and a brief hospital stay. According to her business manager and close friend Bob Bashara, Day's health began to decline when she came home from the hospital. She died surrounded by family and friends peacefully late Sunday night.
Actress Goldie Hawn said, "Doris Day left us and took a piece of the sun with her," while going on to talk about the impact she had on the world. Day was appreciative of her fans throughout her long career, but she did not particularly enjoy talking about herself. Day was "embarrassed to talk...

When teenager Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff sang along to Ella Fitzgerald on the radio, the Cincinnati native could never have predicted that, as Doris Day, she would go on to become one of the 20th century’s most beloved performers, first as a vocalist, then as an actress and then finally as an outspoken champion for the rights of animals.
But it was those radio sing-alongs that inspired Alma Welz Kappelhoff to send her daughter to a vocal coach, and by the time Doris was 17, she was singing for bandleader Barney Rapp, who convinced her to change her name to a more marquee-friendly length.
Day would go on to sing for the likes of Jimmy James and Bob Crosby, but it was her collaboration with Les Brown and His Band of Renown in the late 1940s that would rocket her to national stardom with hits like “Sentimental Journey” and “‘Till the End of Time.

As a singer, Doris Day had a warm voice that captivated millions of post-war record-buyers. As an actress, she was a top box office attraction and her name became shorthand for nearly all 1960s romantic comedies: “It’s a Doris Day kind of film.” As a personality, she was loved by the public as a freckle-faced, common-sense gal who seemed like a lot of fun.
Privately, her life was peppered with divorces, tales of spousal abuse, bankruptcy and even connections to the Manson family. The difference between reality and her image were night and Day, so to speak. But it was a very different time. The public didn’t want to hear about the darkness; they just loved her sunniness. And that’s what fans will continue to remember.
She started out as the “girl singer” in the Big Band era, and the song “Sentimental Journey” in 1945 put her on the map.

Doris Day may have died with a reputation of being Hollywood’s most scrubbed-clean and wholesome girl-next-door type. But she made it to the big screen courtesy her warmly simmering and easily quavering vocal tones. Before films beckoned, she was a featured vocalist with big band-era kings such as Bob Crosby (Bing’s brother) and Les Brown and His Band of Renown, the latter of which recorded Day sunnily crooning “Sentimental Journey” and “My Dreams Are Getting Better All the Time.”
While both ballads made her the toast of radio fans and World War II vets coming home from the battlefront in 1945, Day had so much more to offer during her sadly abbreviated singing career — which included one album released in the 21st century, “My Heart,” and a host of previously unreleased songs she recorded with her composer-producer son, the late Terry Melcher.
Here are some signature smashes and cool surprises from Doris Day.

Doris Day has died at age 97, her foundation said early on May 13. The actress, singer, and activist was one of the last legends of classic Hollywood, and her intense privacy for the last 30 years of her life only enhanced her mystique.
Day was 22 when she recorded her first number-one hit with “Sentimental Journey;” her final acting credit was the TV series “The Doris Day Show,” which ended its run in 1973. But what she packed into those 30 years is extraordinary: nearly 40 movies and five Billboard #1 hits. Although she started to withdraw from Hollywood in the ’70s, followed by the brief run of a Christian Broadcasting Network talk show in 1985-86, it always felt like there was more to discover in her body of work.
That talk show, “Doris Day’s Best Friends,” was legendary in its own right. In 1985, Rock Hudson, Day’s co-star in frothy comedies such as “Pillow Talk” and “Lover Come Back,...

There are many great sales online this week, but the folks at Amazon are treating us to something special: 3 Warner Archive Blu-rays for $35.
While this might not be the lowest that we’ve seen prices on these Blu-rays (the WB Shop has had 5 for $50 sales in the past that have included Warner Archive Blu-rays), it is certainly a good deal on great films.
It looks as though many of these discs are selling quickly, and the time out from when they’ll ship for some of the more popular titles is growing. Below you’ll find a list of the titles which are included in this promotion.
As always, these are affiliate links and will help support this site, should you choose to make any purchases through them.

MGM's show is a surprising powerhouse musical bio about the personality clash between an ambitious singer and the powerful enabler who wants her in his bed. Doris Day and James Cagney are at their best in an only slightly compromised telling of the real-life showbiz relationship of 'twenties star Ruth Etting and the domineering mobster Martin Snyder. Terence Davies’ films deal with repressed desire, longing, and emotional pain that springs from the depths of his characters’ souls, and yet, in person, the great British auteur is undoubtedly the funniest person in the room. He is all smiles and jokes as we sit down to discuss his glorious Sunset Song, entering a limited release this week, and a retrospective of his work at the Museum of the Moving Image. It makes sense that he is joyful rather than somber, because it makes one feel a sort of relief knowing that levity was welcomed between takes on haunting dramas such as Distant Voices, Still Lives and The Deep Blue Sea. In Sunset Song, Davies takes on the first part of a trilogy written by Lewis Grassic Gibbons, in which we meet farm girl Chris Guthrie (a luminous Agyness Deyn) as she is forced to take on the reins of her life in pre-wwi Scotland.

Singer, dancer and actor whose Hollywood career was overshadowed by her marriage to Errol Flynn
The gifted singer, dancer and actor Patrice Wymore, who has died aged 87, had the misfortune to be typecast in secondary roles at Warner Bros studios in the 1950s, and to be known as the third wife of the Hollywood star Errol Flynn.
The 23-year-old Wymore and the 41-year-old Flynn got married after co-starring in Rocky Mountain (1950), a minor western in which he played an army officer who rescues her from marauding Indians, though they had no love scenes together on screen. It was Wymore's second film, while Flynn was a veteran of more than three dozen movies. It was the beginning of her film career, while his was on the slide. Both were under contract to Warner Bros.
At the time, MGM musicals reigned supreme, though Warner Bros had Doris Day, a top box-office singing star.

What does it mean to be an Oscar nominee?
The answers can be as varied as the nominees themselves. As the annual "31 Days of Oscar" festival continues on Turner Classic Movies, each night is themed to all the candidates in a certain category in a certain year.
The evening of Friday, Feb. 14, showcases all the talents who were nominated for best actor of 1955 for the pictures that are being shown. One of the movies absolutely transformed the career of the actor in question: "Marty," the big-screen version of a television play.

Doris Day movies: TCM’s ‘Summer Under the Stars 2013′ lineup continues (photo: Doris Day in ‘Calamity Jane’ publicity shot) Doris Day, who turned 89 last April 3, is Turner Classic Movies’ 2013 “Summer Under the Stars” star on Friday, August 2. (Doris Day, by the way, still looks great. Check out "Doris Day Today.") Doris Day movies, of course, are frequently shown on TCM. Why? Well, TCM is owned by the megaconglomerate Time Warner, which also happens to own (among myriad other things) the Warner Bros. film library, which includes not only the Doris Day movies made at Warners from 1948 to 1955, but also Day’s MGM films as well (and the overwhelming majority of MGM releases up to 1986). My point: Don’t expect any Doris Day movie rarity on Friday — in fact, I don’t think such a thing exists. Doris Day is ‘Calamity Jane’ If you haven’t watched David Butler’s musical...

Paul Henreid: Hollow Triumph aka The Scar tonight Turner Classic Movies’ Paul Henreid film series continues this Tuesday evening, July 16, 2013. Of tonight’s movies, the most interesting offering is Hollow Triumph / The Scar, a 1948 B thriller adapted by Daniel Fuchs (Panic in the Streets, Love Me or Leave Me) from Murray Forbes’ novel, and in which the gentlemanly Henreid was cast against type: a crook who, in an attempt to escape from other (and more dangerous) crooks, impersonates a psychiatrist with a scar on his chin. Joan Bennett, mostly wasted in a non-role, is Henreid’s leading lady. (See also: “One Paul Henreid, Two Cigarettes, Four Bette Davis-es.”) The thriller’s director is Hungarian import Steve Sekely, whose Hollywood career consisted chiefly of minor B fare. In fact, though hardly a great effort, Hollow Triumph was probably the apex of Sekely’s cinematic output in terms of prestige...

Doris Day today Doris Day, who turned 89 last April 24, was a special guest at the Nancy for Frank show — that’s Nancy Sinatra for Frank Sinatra — on SiriusXM Radio channel 71. The Doris Day photo above was posted on Nancy for Frank‘s Facebook page and on the Frank Sinatra Family Forum. (See also: Doris Day photo, with furry friend.) The Doris Day special was aired in two parts in late June 2013. The radio show consisted of Nancy Sinatra chatting with Day, in addition to musical interludes featuring Doris Day songs such as "I’ll String You Along with Me," "But Not for Me," "I’ll See You in My Dreams," and "Hooray for Hollywood," plus two versions of "I Didn’t Know What Time It Was" — one sang by Day, another sang by Frank Sinatra. Doris Day and Frank Sinatra made only movie together, Gordon Douglas’ 1954 musical drama Young at Heart,...

The "DWTS" results are in and D.L. Hughley has been eliminated.
Joining D.L. in the Bottom 3 were soap star Ingo Rademacher and his partner Kym Johnson along with professional boxer Victor Ortiz and his partner Lindsay Arnold.
The comedian took the "DWTS" results in stride, joking to head judge Len Goodman that he "need[s] to work on his hip action." "The hip replacement that Bruno said I should have, I'm willing it to you," he added as the judges laughed.
D.L. had been at the bottom of the leaderboard throughout the competition, earning harsh criticism from the judges. Previously, audience votes kept him in the competition, but the "DWTS" results were not in his favor on Tuesday. Still, he told co-hosts Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke Charvet that he "had a ball." "I applaud how well you handled the criticism, my friend. Really," Tom told D.L.

Birthday wishes go out to Doris Day! The iconic actress, singer and activist turns 91 today (April 3) -- or so it's assumed. The actual year of her birthday is rumored to be 1922, although some reports say it's 1923 or 1924.
Best known for her roles in movies like "Love Me or Leave Me," "Pillow Talk" and "That Touch of Mink," Day broke into Hollywood in the 1950s. But being a beloved singer -- her hit "Sentimental Journey" with Les Brown was an anthem during World War II -- Day also starred in Alfred Hitchcock's 1956 suspense thriller "The Man Who Knew Too Much" and sang two songs in the film, including "Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)," which won an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
Day ended her film career in 1968 and focused on television, starring in "The Doris Day Show" until 1973. In 1975 she announced her retirement, but continued to sing,...

Los Angeles — Doris Day, America's pert, honey-voiced sweetheart of the 1950s and 1960s, beguiled audiences with her on-screen romances opposite top Hollywood leading men Cary Grant, Rock Hudson and Jack Lemmon.
She adored and misses them all, says the 88-year-old Day. But her deepest yearning is reserved for her late son Terry Melcher, a record producer whose touch and voice are part of Day's first album in nearly two decades.
"Oh, I wish he could be here and be a part of it. I would just love that. But it didn't work out that way," Day said, her voice subdued. It's a voice rarely heard since she withdrew from Hollywood in the early 1980s to the haven she made for herself in the Northern California town of Carmel, where Clint Eastwood was once mayor.
"My Heart," set for a Dec. 2 U.S. release, has induced Day to edge back to public attention.

Doris Day may have been — once again — absurdly bypassed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Board of Governors, but at least she'll be getting some much deserved recognition from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (Lafca). Day, 87, has been named the recipient of the L.A. Critics' Career Achievement Award of 2011 — or 2012, as the ceremony will take place early next year. (This year's winners will be announced on December 11.) The first Lafca award winners were announced in 1975. The annual Career Achievement Award was instituted the following year. Since then, a mere four women have been recognized for their contributions to the motion picture industry: actresses Barbara Stanwyck (1981) and Myrna Loy (1983), editor Dede Allen (1999), and now Doris Day. Male recipients — sometimes two per year — range from auteur John Cassavetes to comedian/auteur Jerry Lewis, from producer John Calley to silent-era pioneer Allan Dwan, from animator Chuck Jones to filmmaker Akira Kurosawa.

Doris Day, Duffy Doris Day, 87, and Duffy in a new photo to be used by Sony Music to promote Day's upcoming record "My Heart," the legendary actress-singer's 29th album and her first after a seventeen-year hiatus. "My Heart" is to be released in the United Kingdom on Sept. 5. It'll be available on CD and digital-download formats. "It was brought to my attention that the recordings were in storage and Sony was interested in releasing them," Day explained. "So I listened to them and at first had some misgivings, but after they were re-mastered, I liked them and hoped my fans would too." Day added that "these are the tunes that reflect my love of animals and my love for my son." The album features the track "Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries," produced by Day's son Terry Melcher, who died of cancer in 2004. Doris Day, who began her film...

"A downbeat homage to bright-lights showbiz dramas, an epic orchestration that indulges in stubbornly obsessive riffs, Martin Scorsese's New York, New York (1977) seems to value awkwardness and indecision above all else," writes Dan Callahan for Alt Screen, and much of what follows is pretty rough medicine for those of us who love this film. "Coming off the success of Taxi Driver (1976), Scorsese secured a big budget and MGM sound stages for what was meant to be his tribute to and deconstruction of classic Hollywood musicals, but the tribute got lost somewhere in the deconstruction." The movie "plays out like some errant crossbreeding of Charles Vidor's Love Me or Leave Me (1955) and John Cassavetes's Minnie and Moskowitz (1971)."

Leave it to The Daily Beast to get Scorsese talking about films. Not that it would be hard to do. The man is “Mr. Cinema.” He directs, produces and he even has his own nonprofit organization for preserving classic films, The Film Foundation. The director may have toyed with other genres during his lifetime, but the one people would discuss aplenty is his contributions to crime cinema. To think of Scorsese is to think of Goodfellas, Casino and The Departed, despite also directing films like After Hours and The Last Temptation of Christ. As he turns his attention to the small screen with HBO’s Boardwalk Empire – touted as being the network’s costliest production to date – the director lists off his 15 favorite gangster movies. Scorsese writes:
“Here are 15 gangster pictures that had a profound effect on me and the way I thought about crime and how to portray it on film.

Danielle Darrieux in Max Ophüls‘ La Ronde (top); Doris Day in Charles Vidor‘s Love Me or Leave Me (middle); Julie Christie, Gordon Pinsent in Sarah Polley‘s Away from Her (bottom) More than three years ago, I wrote a post titled "Honorary Oscars Bypass Women." That was not a "politically correct" post — in fact, I despise the concept. Facts are facts, whether they’re socially acceptable or not. And it’s a sad, disturbing, irritating fact that women have been mostly ignored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors in the last seven and a half decades. Filmmaker D. W. Griffith, among whose credits were The Birth of Nation (1915), Intolerance (1916), and Broken Blossoms (1919), was the first Honorary Oscar recipient back at the 1936 Oscar ceremony. Since Griffith couldn’t get work in Hollywood, he got a special Academy Award instead. (Academy/labor politics were involved...

Following an introduction by Frank Sinatra, Doris Day salutes James Cagney, recipient of the AFI Life Achievement Award back in 1974. In her tribute, Day tells "Jimmy" that being with him again that evening was a "sentimental journey" adding that "I can’t help but wish we were starting out to do Love Me or Leave Me all over again." In that 1955 Charles Vidor musical-melodrama-(fictionalized) biopic of torch singer Ruth Etting, Day played the long-suffering Etting while Cagney was her knock-them-down, slap-them-around gangster-husband, Martin Snyder. "You don’t play a character. You live the character," Day tells "Jimmy." "You breathe life into your own performance." If that’s true, I’d say that Cagney must have been a scary companion throughout most of his career. In fact, Cagney frequently mistreated his on-screen gal pals — just ask The Public Enemy’s and Lady Killer’s Mae Clarke. For giving Day a...

Velvet-voiced singer, actor and activist who broke new ground for black performers
A handful of decades ago the roles for black performers in Hollywood movies were deliberately kept peripheral to the plots, so that their appearances could easily be edited out for screenings in the American south. Black singers and musicians were barred from taking rooms in the same hotels in which they were performing. Partners in an interracial marriage might decide to leave the Us and move to more hospitable locations, such as Paris, to avoid hate mail and threats. All this and more happened to the singer and actor Lena Horne, who has died aged 92.
Horne not only rose above it all, but also significantly contributed to changing the situation. The velvet-voiced, multi-talented Horne first negotiated, and then resisted, the worst that a racist entertainment industry could throw at her. She rose to its summit as an original...

De Niro Biography Reveals All
An explosive new biography has exposed Robert De Niro's bizarre pursuit of Whitney Houston and his father's homosexual affairs with a series of celebrated artistic and literary figures. Author John Baxter claims artist Robert De Niro Sr., who died in 1993, was the gay lover of poet Robert Duncan, playwright Tennessee Williams and painter Jackson Pollock - despite being married to the Raging Bull star's mother, Virginia Admiral, for several months during World War II. In his book De Niro: A Biography, he also reveals De Niro Jr.'s aggressive pursuit of Whitney Houston when she was a young, rising star. The legendary actor sent Houston flowers and gifts, including a teddy bear wearing diamond earrings, to persuade her to co-star in a remake of the 1955 film Love Me Or Leave Me. But according to Baxter, Whitney's parents urged her to snub De Niro's advances in the belief her career would be over before it began if she involved herself with him. He writes, "Her parents with whom she lived, advised her not to get involved with a man who, besides being white, was almost twice her age. Record executive Clive Davis echoed this advice. For a young black singer such a relationship would have been suicide."...
