When the news of Roger Corman’s passing was announced, the online film community immediately responded with a flood of tributes to a legend. Many began with the multitude of careers he helped launch, the profound influence he had on independent cinema, and even the cameos he made in the films of Corman school “graduates.”
Tending to land further down his list of achievements and influences a bit is his work as a director, which is admittedly a more complicated legacy. Yes, Corman made some bad movies, no one is disputing that, but he also made some great ones. If he was only responsible for making the Poe films from 1960’s The Fall of the House of Usher to 1964’s The Tomb of Ligeia, he would be worthy of praise as a terrific filmmaker. But several more should be added to the list including A Bucket of Blood (1959) and Little Shop of Horrors...

Exclusive: Filmmaker Deon Taylor is set to direct Sony Screen Gems’ Exposure, off Peter A. Dowling’s spec which the label acquired a year ago, as Deadline reported exclusively.
Exposure follows a rookie Detroit African-American female cop who stumbles upon corrupt officers who are murdering a drug dealer, an incident captured by her body cam. They pursue her through the night in an attempt to destroy the footage, but to make matters worse, they’ve tipped off a criminal gang that she’s responsible for the dealer’s death.
Eric Paquette is overseeing the project for Screen Gems. In a major worldwide rights deal, Paquette also brought Taylor’s latest movie The Intruder into the studio. That psychological thriller stars Dennis Quaid, Meaghan Good, and Michael Ealy and follows a young married couple who after buying a huge Napa Valley estate are threatened by its previous owner.

Full disclosure: this is not really an interview about Let the Sunshine In. Claire Denis and I met on the day of her new film’s U.S. release, which was, like many cinephiles, on my mind. All the more so because Sunshine has been swimming through parts of the subsoncious since I first saw it nearly seven months back at the New York Film Festival — where I mean to speak with Denis, and finally didn’t on account of her shooting, to our immense fortune, another film: the much-anticipated Robert Pattinson-starrer High Life.
So there many questions about this wondrous, mysterious film had percolated for a long time, and I didn’t get to them — to this interview’s benefit, as I think will soon become clear. Denis is, in her films and both times we’ve spoken, a searching mind, and it’s clear that, a year out from its premiere,...

1963’s Blood Feast, the infamous gorefest from director Herschell Gordon Lewis, is a pox on our culture; grossly stupid, comically inept and depressingly nihilistic. A perfect film for 2017.
Lewis’s movie was released the same year that Patsy Cline and John Kennedy died, George Wallace turned away black students from an Alabama college and Martin Luther King was jailed in Birmingham. Betty Friedan wrote The Feminine Mystique and Sam Cooke recorded ”A Change Is Gonna Come”. In an already fractured country, those seismic shifts only deepened the decades-old divide along the Mason-Dixon line.
Meanwhile, in southernly states from Mississippi to Florida, Lewis and his production partner David Friedman were busy...

At this past weekend’s Overlook Film Festival, Roger Corman was on hand to receive the “Master of Horror Award,” presented by Mick Garris. There are few people in the movie industry that have had the long lasting effect that Roger Corman has, and I was honored to speak with him during the festival to get his thoughts on modern filmmaking, seeing his older films digitally restored, and he also gave his advice to young filmmakers looking to stand out from the pack.
Congratulations on receiving the Master of Horror Award at the Overlook Film Festival. It’s such a great team behind the festival and I’m happy to see you as the first in hopefully a long line of “Master of Horror” recipients.
Roger Corman: I'm very pleased because I know the festival. I know this is the first time it's been held here, but I've known Mick Garris for many years,...

There are some figures in film history who fade away along with the era in which they produce the bulk of their work. And then there’s veteran B-movie producer and director Roger Corman, still chipper than ever at 90. As a filmmaker, Corman was responsible for a string of vibrant Edgar Allen Poe adaptations in the early sixties (most of which starred Vincent Price). He also directed William Shatner in his best pre-“Star Trek” performance as a race-baiting lunatic in 1962’s “The Intruder.” But Corman more or less stopped directing movies in 1970 (with the exception of 1990’s “Frankenstein Unbound”) and shifted focus to producing a string of low budget genre efforts — several of which introduced some of the great American filmmakers still working today, including Martin Scorsese, Frances Ford Coppola, James Cameron, Jonathan Demme, and many others.

Roger Corman. © Festival del film LocarnoGuest of honor at the Locarno Film Festival's Filmmakers Academy, Roger Corman is in the Swiss town to receive a lifetime achievement award and hold a masterclass open to all festival goers. For a festival like Locarno that continues to celebrate and champion the cinema of independence, to award a luminary like Corman is only natural. Though his pivotal role in the industry he forever changed hasn't always been adequately acknowledged, this year's award is yet another step towards the canonization of a man known as “The Pope of Pop Cinema.” A man whose influence on postwar American cinema cannot be overstated, having launched the careers of people like Jack Nicholson, Martin Scorsese, Jonathan Demme, Sylvester Stallone, Ron Howard, Joe Dante, Francis Ford Coppola, James Cameron and many others, Mr. Corman was kind enough to grant us an interview. Amiable, sharp and unassuming, the legendary...

This four-feature set is the weirdest cinematic treasure box of the year, a sort of anti-matter film school. Three of the films are derived from a single Yugoslavian picture rejected by Roger Corman. His acolytes Jack Hill and Stephanie Rothman proceeded to add serial killings, supernatural hauntings, a goofy vampire, and an ending that could be called 'Zombies In The Wax Museum.' Produced by Brian Yuzna, the warped individual behind the brutal class satire/mutant cannibalism jaunt Society, and starring that rubber-faced icon of the midnight movie, Jeffrey Combs, this remains one of the crowning glories of 80s cult film-making. Re-Animator's essentially an outlandish, sillier take on Hp Lovecraft’s spin on the Frankenstein mad-scientist story, and Combs, who you’ll undoubtedly know from such box-office juggernauts as Doctor Mordrid and Cellar Dweller (reviewed here next month), plays brilliant-if-misguided medical student Herbert West.

In Alex Stapleton’s documentary Corman’s World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel, prolific filmmaking legend Roger Corman discusses a philosophy of entertainment that he developed about a decade into his career. Corman had just made his first serious drama, the 1962 integration-themed The Intruder. The film, which he and his brother self-financed because studios wouldn’t touch it, was Corman’s first work that he felt to be truly important, and it stands today as a film without equal in its timely diagnosis of American race relations. The film also turned out to be Corman’s first indisputable box office failure. So after The Intruder, Corman changed course: he decided to continue pursuing relevant themes in his work, but maintain his dominance of American B-cinema. The text of his films would entertain audiences, but the subtext would resonate with an eye on timely social, cultural, and political issues. Corman saw his 1967 film The St. Valentine...

What sort of creature is 21st century cinema going to be? Two-headed beast or tentacular jellyfish? Branded or brain-dead entertainment? Elitist pastime or popular food for thought? To be on the safe side and remind future generations of the genetic foundations of this untamed living being called cinema, at the venerable age of 87 year-old, Roger Corman has opened his own YouTube channel. From king of the drive-in to elder librarian of the digital cinematheque of Babel, Corman’s protean genius is anything but nostalgic. Instead of mourning the cyclical “death of cinema” the legendary producer keeps injecting new life and ideas into the changing shape of films. While his output has significantly decreased throughout the years his relevance has not, nor, it would appear, has his maverick spirit.

Quentin Tarantino's new movie is a reminder of Hollywood's failure to properly grapple with slavery. In fact, all the intelligent movies come from the exploitation sector, says John Patterson
Can you name a single great mainstream American movie about slavery? I don't mean Birth Of A Nation or Gone With The Wind, both of which more or less endorse the Peculiar Institution; or Amistad or Beloved, which are adequate on the facts but no one's idea of great movies. I mean a great American movie possessed of an understanding of the full extent of slavery, its bottomless obscenity and violence.
No, I didn't think so. I'm not yet sure if Django Unchained, with Jamie Foxx as Nat Turner by way of Black Zorro, is actually a great American movie (though I haven't enjoyed a Tarantino movie this much since Jackie Brown), but it does not stint in its determination...

I love the art of animation, and it's amazing to see how far things have come and advanced over the years. The industry is changing in terms of technology, but what it all really comes down to is telling good stories. There's been a lot of great animated movies this year, and many of them are up for several awards at the 40th Annual Annie Awards.
Some of the movies nomainated include Brave, Frankenweenie, Hotel Transylvania, ParaNorman, Rise of the Guardians, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, and Wreck-It Ralph. Out of those films my favorite is a toss up between Wreck-It Ralph and ParaNorman, those were two pretty incredible films. I think ParaNorman has the edge though.
Some of the other animated properties nominated are Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1, Disney Tron: Uprising, Justice League: Doom, Robot Chicken ‘DC Comics Special', South Park ‘Raising the Bar’, and several others.

Roger Corman is one of those distinct Hollywood personalities that everyone has been exposed to in some manner. Whether you are aware of the man’s name or not, odds are you have seen a film he has produced, written or directed.
He has given many big names, from Jack Nicholson to Francis Ford Coppola, their start as part of the “Corman Film School”. His influence is immense in the film industry, and this is the focus of Alex Stapleton’s documentary, Corman’s World.
The film opens with Corman on the set of Dinoshark, doing what the man does best: making a movie! Well into his eighties, Corman is just as hands on as ever on the set of this sci-fi cheapie that was shot in Mexico. Over the next hour and a half (I beg that the film could have easily been twice as long and not suffered for it) Roger Corman,...

Corman’S World: Exploits Of A Hollywood Rebel
Featuring: Roger Corman, Joe Dante, Peter Bogdanovich, Jack Nicholson, Dick Miller, Robert DeNiro, David Carradine, William Shatner | Directed by Alex Stapleton
Roger Corman is perhaps the most prolific and influential Hollywood filmmaker in the history of the medium. His immeasurable imprint on American cinema not only spans over six decades but has resulted in creating an indelible cinematic body of work as well as a legacy of training the next generation of actors, writers, directors and producers – many of whom have created cinema masterpieces of their own – including many listed above!
I’m a huge fan of exploitation cinema, I have been my entire movie-watching life. After all I grew up in the video generation – a generation in which lurid VHS boxes promised more than the movies within contained and a time when my movie experiences influenced the types of films I relish in and enjoy today.

A new documentary pays tribute to the prolific independent filmmaker, Roger Corman. Here’s Ryan’s review of the entertaining Corman’s World…
The importance of Roger Corman in American filmmaking cannot be underestimated. Without Corman, the New Hollywood style of filmmaking, which arguably began with Easy Rider in 1969, would never have happened. Directors such as Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard and Joe Dante would never have been given their first chance at making movies. Jack Nicholson, Robert De Niro and William Shatner may never have broken into stardom had Corman not given them roles in his films.
For much of the Us filmmaking establishment, Corman is ‘King of the Bs’ – a director and producer of low-budget trash. But what filmmaker Alex Stapleton’s documentary Corman’s World demonstrates is that, as cheap and swiftly made as Corman’s movies are, they’re varied, imaginative, and contrary to common assumptions,...

This tribute to the exploitation king reveals him as the very incarnation of never-say-die American entrepreneurialism
A supremely watchable documentary-tribute to the exploitation king Roger Corman. Cheerfully turning out low-budget shlockbusters, Corman emerges as the very incarnation of never-say-die American entrepreneurialism and capitalism, celebrating naughtiness, absurdity and fun. In the process, he has given a career start and an invaluable real-world film education to the likes of Jack Nicholson, Peter Bogdanovich, Joe Dante, Ron Howard and Martin Scorsese. For film theorists, his anarchic movies such as The Terror (1963) – which he put together just because he happened to have a creepy-looking set which he couldn't bear to go to waste – are exercises in pure, narrative-less cinema, a series of wacky effects and explosions and stabbings and screams. And yet his anti-racism movie The Intruder (1962) was challenging and courageous; it was precisely because Corman was not encumbered with middlebrow good taste that...

It's time for our weekly pick of your responses to our favourite film series, for which Guardian writers have selected the movies they just can't get enough of
Here's a roundup of what you thought in week seven, when the selections were The Goonies, Together, The Ladykillers, Night of the Hunter and Star Trek II – The Wrath of Kahn
My favourite film's fish and visitors moment finally arrived at the start of week seven. We'd got away with Back to the Future, slipped Predator past you in a cloak of respectability and zapped Ghostbusters's critical hot spots. Yet Matt Andrews's championing of The Goonies was a flashback too far for those suffering from nostalgia fatigue. "Is there anything edifying at this point in another Guardian contributor picking some 80s kids' movie as their favourite?" asked JohnBarnesOnToast. Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel tracks the triumphant rise of the true "godfather" of independent filmmaking, Roger Corman. The single most prolific writer-director-producer, Corman financed hundreds of profitable low-budget films and helped launch the careers of Jack Nicholson, Robert De Niro, Ron Howard, Martin Scorsese, Eli Roth, James Cameron, and many more.
With archival footage of American culture and countercultures from the 1950's to present day, and dynamic interviews with alumni of Roger Corman's cutthroat school of filmmaking, Corman's World takes us back to the days when Roger was King.

Many independent directors have come and gone throughout the years, but the one who’s stood out the most over the years is Roger Corman. The “King of B’s” filmmaker has made a flurry of independent sci-fi, action, horror and drama movies throughout the years that include “The Little Shop of Horrors,” “The Intruder,” “The Wild Angels,” “Tales of Terror” and produced many films like “Death Race 2000,” “The Big Doll House,” “Piranha” and “Boxcar Bertha,” just to name a few. He’s always worked outside of the more traditional Hollywood system and has made many films that are more akin to his own tastes, creating a legacy of wonderful, entertaining films...

I wrote about Project Nim last time (read that here) and since then I have watched six more documentaries, trying to close the gap on the number of documentaries I missed out on seeing over the course of 2011. As a result, I have now seen five of the 15 documentaries shortlisted by the Academy for Oscar consideration and unfortunately I don't have access to the other ten, though I still have the much talked about Senna and Werner Herzog's Into the Abyss yet to watch. Beyond all that, however, I have six documentaries to briefly discuss today so let's no waste anymore time... Undefeated Undefeated is hands-down, without a doubt fantastic. Yet, at the moment, two things piss me off about it. The Weinstein Co. hasn't done anything to promote it. There isn't a clip; there isn't a trailer; and the poster I used to the left is some rush...

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel Trailer If there ever was a team-up I know I'll never be able to see it would be...

Often called the King of B-Movies, Roger Corman has been making low-budget movies since the 1950s as a screenwriter, producer, director, distributor and sometimes actor. In his early period, he produced up to nine movies a year. Corman is considered the godfather of independent moviemaking. His fastest film was perhaps The Little Shop of Horrors (1960), which was reputedly shot in two days and one night. His filmography includes cult classics such as Caged Heat (1974), Death Race 2000 (1975) and Android (1982), but Corman’s greatest acclaim as a director came with his Edgar Allan Poe Series of the 1960s. We could write a book on all his accomplishments but for now, here is a trailer for documentary about the legend titled Corman’s World: Exploits Of A Hollywood Rebel.
Here is the official synopsis:

Anchor Bay has released this fantastic new trailer for a documentary they are distributing that tells the story of hardcore action B-movie director Roger Corman. The doc is called Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel and it includes footage from several of his awesome films, as well as interviews with several big Hollywood players such as Ron Howard, Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Eli Roth and Jack Nicholson.
I've see a ton of Corman's films over the years, and good or bad they were always entertaining and fun to watch, and in the end that's all that really matters. This looks like a great documentary and anyone that enjoys watching action flicks should enjoy a doc like this.

The master of shlock, Roger Corman, has got his own documentary. After influencing a breadth of filmmakers and actors from Francis Ford Coppola to James Cameron to Martin Scorsese & Robert De Niro (both featured in this trailer), have been heavily influenced by the legend, director Alex Stapleton has set out to provide an account of his life.
While getting his start with films like The Little Shop of Horrors and Joe Dante‘s Piranha, at 85-years-old today, the icon is still producing films with Dinoshark, Dinocroc vs. Supergator and Sharktopus being his latest work. We saw the documentary at New York Film Festival, stating it is “wholeheartedly an appreciation” of the “unfathomable” amount of work the man was behind. Check out the trailer which seems to indicate just as much below via Apple.

With the rise of B-movie documentaries like Not Quite Hollywood, Machete Maidens Unleashed, and American Grindhouse, it only makes perfect sense that the true “King of the B’s”, Roger Corman, would finally be the subject of his own well-deserved documentary. When it comes to B-movies, it truly is Corman’s World.
Without Roger Corman in the director and producer’s chair, the world of cinema would be without a huge number of cult classics and not-so-classics. Without Roger Corman’s own version of filmmaking boot camp giving many writers, directors, and actors their big break, the world of cinema might be without Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, Peter Bogdanovich, Jonathan Demme, James Cameron, John Sayles, Paul Bartel, Gale Anne Hurd, Joe Dante, Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, Robert De Niro, and Jack Nicholson; and that’s just to name a few.
