When the news of Roger Corman’s passing was announced, the online film community immediately responded with a flood of tributes to a legend. Many began with the multitude of careers he helped launch, the profound influence he had on independent cinema, and even the cameos he made in the films of Corman school “graduates.”

Tending to land further down his list of achievements and influences a bit is his work as a director, which is admittedly a more complicated legacy. Yes, Corman made some bad movies, no one is disputing that, but he also made some great ones. If he was only responsible for making the Poe films from 1960’s The Fall of the House of Usher to 1964’s The Tomb of Ligeia, he would be worthy of praise as a terrific filmmaker. But several more should be added to the list including A Bucket of Blood (1959) and Little Shop of Horrors...

Exclusive: Filmmaker Deon Taylor is set to direct Sony Screen Gems’ Exposure, off Peter A. Dowling’s spec which the label acquired a year ago, as Deadline reported exclusively.

Exposure follows a rookie Detroit African-American female cop who stumbles upon corrupt officers who are murdering a drug dealer, an incident captured by her body cam. They pursue her through the night in an attempt to destroy the footage, but to make matters worse, they’ve tipped off a criminal gang that she’s responsible for the dealer’s death.

Eric Paquette is overseeing the project for Screen Gems. In a major worldwide rights deal, Paquette also brought Taylor’s latest movie The Intruder into the studio. That psychological thriller stars Dennis Quaid, Meaghan Good, and Michael Ealy and follows a young married couple who after buying a huge Napa Valley estate are threatened by its previous owner.

In an already fractured country, those seismic shifts only deepened the decades-old divide along the Mason-Dixon line.

At this past weekend’s Overlook Film Festival, Roger Corman was on hand to receive the “Master of Horror Award,” presented by Mick Garris. There are few people in the movie industry that have had the long lasting effect that Roger Corman has, and I was honored to speak with him during the festival to get his thoughts on modern filmmaking, seeing his older films digitally restored, and he also gave his advice to young filmmakers looking to stand out from the pack.

There are some figures in film history who fade away along with the era in which they produce the bulk of their work. And then there’s veteran B-movie producer and director Roger Corman, still chipper than ever at 90. As a filmmaker, Corman was responsible for a string of vibrant Edgar Allen Poe adaptations in the early sixties (most of which starred Vincent Price). He also directed William Shatner in his best pre-“Star Trek” performance as a race-baiting lunatic in 1962’s “The Intruder.” But Corman more or less stopped directing movies in 1970 (with the exception of 1990’s “Frankenstein Unbound”) and shifted focus to producing a string of low budget genre efforts — several of which introduced some of the great American filmmakers still working today, including Martin Scorsese, Frances Ford Coppola, James Cameron, Jonathan Demme, and many others.

Locarno Film Festival (August 3-13) is to pay tribute to Roger Corman, the cult Us filmmaker known as the “king of the B-movie” whose features include The Little Shop of Horrors (1960), Death Race 2000 (1975) and Piranha (1978).

The 69th edition of the festival will screen two of his films - The Intruder (1962) and Masque of the Red Death (1964) - and the 90-year-old filmmaker will also hold a masterclass.

In addition, Corman will be guest of honour at Locarno’s Filmmakers Academy, a training project for young directors, which this year received more than 290 applications and selected 15 participants including Leonor Teles, winner of Berlin’s Golden Bear for Best Short Film, and emerging talents from Ethiopia and Madagascar among others.

Roger Corman has directed more than 50 low-budget drive-in classics, produced and/or distributed 450 more, and helped the careers of hundreds of young people breaking into the industry. Wow. Just a month in and this regular post dedicated to the - shall we say - more idiosyncratic, less delicate of movies (or shall we just say “gory horrors and not-quite-b-movies”) has the splendid fortune of getting to review Stuart Gordon’s tongue-in-cheek classic, Re-Animator.

Produced by Brian Yuzna, the warped individual behind the brutal class satire/mutant cannibalism jaunt Society, and starring that rubber-faced icon of the midnight movie, Jeffrey Combs, this remains one of the crowning glories of 80s cult film-making. Re-Animator's essentially an outlandish, sillier take on Hp Lovecraft’s spin on the Frankenstein mad-scientist story, and Combs, who you’ll undoubtedly know from such box-office juggernauts as Doctor Mordrid and Cellar Dweller (reviewed here next month), plays brilliant-if-misguided medical student Herbert West.

In Alex Stapleton’s documentary Corman’s World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel, prolific filmmaking legend Roger Corman discusses a philosophy of entertainment that he developed about a decade into his career. Corman had just made his first serious drama, the 1962 integration-themed The Intruder. The film, which he and his brother self-financed because studios wouldn’t touch it, was Corman’s first work that he felt to be truly important, and it stands today as a film without equal in its timely diagnosis of American race relations. The film also turned out to be Corman’s first indisputable box office failure. So after The Intruder, Corman changed course: he decided to continue pursuing relevant themes in his work, but maintain his dominance of American B-cinema. What sort of creature is 21st century cinema going to be? Two-headed beast or tentacular jellyfish? Branded or brain-dead entertainment? Elitist pastime or popular food for thought? As one of the first major Hollywood filmmakers to launch a paid channel on YouTube, Roger Corman, along with his longtime producer partner Julie Corman, will unveil “Corman’s Drive-In” on YouTube, which reaches more than one billion unique users monthly. Corman’s new channel is part of YouTube’s new platform offering viewers more channels through a paid subscription model.

“Corman’s Drive-In” – set to launch this summer – gives the legendary Oscar winning director the opportunity to take the treasured library of more than 400 classic films directly to his fan base, as well as reach a new millennial audience.

“I have always approached filmmaking with the desire to reach a broad audience, and YouTube is clearly where the viewers are now,” said Roger Corman. “In today’s ever-connected marketplace, I couldn’t think of a better platform on which to unveil “Corman’s Drive-In.”

Quentin Tarantino's new movie is a reminder of Hollywood's failure to properly grapple with slavery. In fact, all the intelligent movies come from the exploitation sector, says John Patterson

Can you name a single great mainstream American movie about slavery? I don't mean Birth Of A Nation or Gone With The Wind, both of which more or less endorse the Peculiar Institution; or Amistad or Beloved, which are adequate on the facts but no one's idea of great movies. I mean a great American movie possessed of an understanding of the full extent of slavery, its bottomless obscenity and violence.

No, I didn't think so. I'm not yet sure if Django Unchained, with Jamie Foxx as Nat Turner by way of Black Zorro, is actually a great American movie (though I haven't enjoyed a Tarantino movie this much since Jackie Brown), but it does not stint in its determination...

I love the art of animation, and it's amazing to see how far things have come and advanced over the years. The industry is changing in terms of technology, but what it all really comes down to is telling good stories. There's been a lot of great animated movies this year, and many of them are up for several awards at the 40th Annual Annie Awards.

Some of the movies nomainated include Brave, Frankenweenie, Hotel Transylvania, ParaNorman, Rise of the Guardians, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, and Wreck-It Ralph. Out of those films my favorite is a toss up between Wreck-It Ralph and ParaNorman, those were two pretty incredible films. I think ParaNorman has the edge though.

Some of the other animated properties nominated are Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1, Disney Tron: Uprising, Justice League: Doom, Robot Chicken ‘DC Comics Special', South Park ‘Raising the Bar’, and several others.

The International Animated Film Society (Asifa-Hollywood) has announced the nominees for the 40th Annie Awards also known as Animation's Highest Honor. Disney/Pixar led the nominees with "Brave," "Frankenweenie," and "Wreck-It-Ralph" getting Best Picture nods. The 40th Annual Annie Awards will take place on February 2, 2013 at UCLA.s Royce Hall, in Los Angeles, California.

Kicking off Friday, Telluride 2012 has revealed their line-up, with highlights including Michael Haneke‘s Amour, Ramin Bahrani‘s At Any Price, Thomas Vinterberg‘s The Hunt, Roger Michell‘s Hyde Park on Hudson, Jacques Audiard‘s Rust & Bone, Noah Baumbach‘s Frances Ha and Sarah Polley‘s Stories We Tell.

Unfortunately absent are a few major titles, including Paul Thomas Anderson‘s The Master, Derek Cianfrance‘s The Place Beyond the Pines, Terrence Malick‘s To the Wonder, Olivier Assayas‘ Something in the Air, but rumors point to Ben Affleck‘s Argo secretly getting a bow there, as they will announce a few more as the festival progresses this weekend. I’m a huge fan of exploitation cinema, I have been my entire movie-watching life. After all I grew up in the video generation – a generation in which lurid VHS boxes promised more than the movies within contained and a time when my movie experiences influenced the types of films I relish in and enjoy today.

The importance of Roger Corman in American filmmaking cannot be underestimated. Without Corman, the New Hollywood style of filmmaking, which arguably began with Easy Rider in 1969, would never have happened. My favourite horror film festival, FrightFest, have announced the line-up for next month’s Glasgow Ff, which takes place as part of the Glasgow Film Festival – with what looks to be the biggest line-up ever. Says Alan Jones, FrightFest’s co-director:

Corman’s World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel had a very limited theatrical release earlier this month, but a new reports reveals that we should be seeing a Blu-ray/DVD release in February.

According to Blu-ray.com, Anchor Bay is planning to release the film on February 27th. There is no information related to pricing or extra features, but we expect to hear more from Anchor Bay in the coming weeks. Keep an eye out for an official press release, but until then, we’ve included the synopsis, trailer, and poster below:

I wrote about Project Nim last time (read that here) and since then I have watched six more documentaries, trying to close the gap on the number of documentaries I missed out on seeing over the course of 2011. As a result, I have now seen five of the 15 documentaries shortlisted by the Academy for Oscar consideration and unfortunately I don't have access to the other ten, though I still have the much talked about Senna and Werner Herzog's Into the Abyss yet to watch. Beyond all that, however, I have six documentaries to briefly discuss today so let's no waste anymore time... Undefeated Undefeated is hands-down, without a doubt fantastic. Yet, at the moment, two things piss me off about it. The Weinstein Co. hasn't done anything to promote it. Often called the King of B-Movies, Roger Corman has been making low-budget movies since the 1950s as a screenwriter, producer, director, distributor and sometimes actor. In his early period, he produced up to nine movies a year. Corman is considered the godfather of independent moviemaking. His fastest film was perhaps The Little Shop of Horrors (1960), which was reputedly shot in two days and one night. His filmography includes cult classics such as Caged Heat (1974), Death Race 2000 (1975) and Android (1982), but Corman’s greatest acclaim as a director came with his Edgar Allan Poe Series of the 1960s. Anchor Bay has released this fantastic new trailer for a documentary they are distributing that tells the story of hardcore action B-movie director Roger Corman. The doc is called Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel and it includes footage from several of his awesome films, as well as interviews with several big Hollywood players such as Ron Howard, Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Eli Roth and Jack Nicholson.

I've see a ton of Corman's films over the years, and good or bad they were always entertaining and fun to watch, and in the end that's all that really matters. This looks like a great documentary and anyone that enjoys watching action flicks should enjoy a doc like this.

While getting his start with films like The Little Shop of Horrors and Joe Dante‘s Piranha, at 85-years-old today, the icon is still producing films with Dinoshark, Dinocroc vs. Supergator and Sharktopus being his latest work. We saw the documentary at New York Film Festival, stating it is “wholeheartedly an appreciation” of the “unfathomable” amount of work the man was behind.
