A Taste of Honey (1961)

Goofs

A Taste of Honey

Edit

Continuity

When Jimmy the sailor meets Jo after school he takes her bag and slings over his right shoulder. But on the following cut when they arrive at her residence; the bag is now over his left shoulder.

Factual errors

The scene where Jo says goodbye to Jimmy for the last time is shot at Barton Swing Bridge, on the Manchester Ship Canal. Jimmy walks through the closing barriers to the end of the bridge and is next seen on the ship, but there isn't a way for Jimmy to get off the bridge and onto the ship as the far end of the bridge hangs over the canal. Jimmy would have had to fall 15 feet whilst leaping around 20-30 feet to make it to the deck of the ship. Quite an achievement in those boots.

Revealing mistakes

During the opening credits bus ride through Manchester the very large building on Portland street overlooking Piccadilly Gardens (now a Thistle hotel) has large letters across the top on each wing identifying it as "Hickson, Lloyd & King Ltd.", but in the shot, the letters are all backwards in a mirror image.

Miscellaneous

While the teacher is reading from a book; at one point it cuts to two classmates who look back at Jo and start giggling. The cut is premature and makes no sense because when it cuts back to Jo, she is not doing anything to make them laugh. She is merely looking in a notebook. However it is in the next sequence of cuts when Jo begins to mimic the teacher thus causing the students to giggle.
When Helen, Jo, Peter and friends are on the amusement park boardwalk walking among the crowd; many of the various folks passing by and standing around keep looking into the camera. Apparently these shots were done in a guerrilla filming style using real people as oppose to professional background actors.
When Geoffrey and Jo are taking in Jo's new flat; there are periodic drop outs of the room's ambient sound. This also happens when Helen comes to visit Jo. These audio drop outs interrupt the flow of the film.

Plot holes

When the landlady is arguing with Helen about being behind in rent; she warns Helen that if she doesn't get her money then she's out. Shortly after Helen sneaks out with her daughter through a small window that exists out to the street. However all this slipping out was unnecessary and made no sense since she was going to be thrown out the next day anyway. It was not as if she were going to be arrested. All she had to do was pack and be ready to leave the next morning. There was no need for this escape routine.

Boom mic visible

When Helen comes back home and Jo is still in bed at 3 o'clock in the afternoon, the shadow of the boom mic is visible in the top part of the dressing table mirror when Helen sits down there.
In the shoe store @54m, after Geoffrey picks up one shoe, the shadow of the boom mic is visible at the top of the frame against the wall of shoes, and is lowered as it follows Jo beginning to sit down.
