“Slow Horses” star Gary Oldman is the frontrunner to win Best Drama Actor at the upcoming Emmys. Oldman earned his first and only Oscar six years ago for his portrayal of World War II-era British prime minister Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour.” That win was sandwiched between two other lead bids for “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” (2012) and “Mank” (2021). His sole Emmy nomination to date came in 2001 for his guest appearance in the two-part seventh season finale of “Friends”; he lost to Derek Jacobi (“Frasier”).
On Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses,” which is based on a series of novels by Mick Herron, Oldman plays Jackson Lamb, a particularly uncouth MI5 officer saddled with the responsibility of supervising a group of service rejects. This constitutes his very first regular role on a continuing series and his first live action TV performance at all in over two decades.

Succession’s Sarah Snook is returning to the stage in London, and possibly Broadway, to take on an adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, a dark tale of a portrait that ages as its subject remains forever young.
The Emmy-nominated actress will have the gargantuan task of playing all 26 characters in Dorian Gray when it opens at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London’s West End in January 2024 for a limited 12-week season.
It’s a mammoth undertaking for a solo artist who will be required to be on stage for two hours without an interval.
The show was devised by Kip Williams, the artistic director of Australia’s celebrated Sydney Theatre Company. It premiered in Sydney with actress Eryn Jean Norvill creating the part — or parts, because there are 26 of them.
Those connected with it have described the show as “cine-theatre.”

Bi Gan's last project, “Long Day's Journey Into Night,” was an ambitious, 138-minute feature that became instantly iconic for a nearly hour-long tracking shot filmed entirely in 3D. His latest effort, the aptly-titled “A Short Story,” is a 15-minute cat fable commissioned by a pet company. For most other directors, this shift in focus might result in an easy paycheck or minor stylistic exercise, but Bi turns the quaint concept into a vessel for further formal experimentation. His powers are evident regardless of running time.
A Short Story is screening at Short Shorts Film Festival and Asia
The story takes on the form of a fairy tale, with Bi himself narrating the journey of a Black Cat (Guo Hua Chen; voiced by Huan Huang) who sets out to find the “most precious thing in the world” after a Scarecrow tells him he can locate it if he talks to...

If you were already on pins and needles waiting for American Horror Story: Apocalypse, you're probably even more excited since star Sarah Paulson announced to the Television Critics Association that Jessica Lange would be returning for this upcoming season in a guest-starring capacity. Lange hasn't been seen on the series since 2015, when she exited the horror anthology at the end of its fourth season.
When news broke in 2013 that Lange was leaving after American Horror Story: Freak Show, everyone questioned why the actress would leave. It was a fair question: the franchise continually brought in great ratings and buzz, and Lange's roles on the series earned her not one but two Emmys. Plus, the anthology format meant that there was always a new role to play. Why would an actress step away?
In interviews given around her departure, Lange gave a very simple, relatable reason: TV schedules are a huge commitment,...

Did you know that Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread) is currently treading the boards in London? She's nominated for a Best Actress Olivier Award for playing Mary Tyrone in the Eugene O'Neill drama Long Day's Journey Into Night (a classic role which already scored an Oscar nod for Katharine Hepburn and a Tony for Jessica Lange). Her last performance is the day of the Oliviers (April 8th) after which she presumably gets a wee break before coming back to America in May. She and Jeremy Irons will do the same show again at Bam in Brooklyn for American audiences.
Lesley's "Mary" is up against Imelda Staunton's "Martha" in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?! Clash Of The Epic Roles. If Imelda loses that contest to Lesley (they've both won Oliviers before) she still has another chance to win. She's double-nominated as she's also up for Best Actress in a Musical for Follies.

Michael Shannon can easily be described as Hollywood’s secret weapon. He’s a reliable working actor whose versatility onscreen has seen him emerge from Michael Bay’s Pearl Harbor to appear opposite Eminem in 8 Mile, earn an Oscar nomination in Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet’s highly anticipated onscreen reunion Revolutionary Road and walk away unscathed from Man of Steel, in which he played the critically panned blockbuster’s main baddie, General Zod. He’s repeatedly worked with directors that include Jeff Nichols, Liza Johnson, Michael Bay, Siofra Campbell and Werner Herzog.
In fact, Vulture even gave him that title in 2016 when he was promoting the back-to-back releases of Nocturnal Animals, which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting actor, and Loving, the latter of which most fans probably didn’t even realize he was in until the actor suddenly appeared onscreen as a photographer who captures the story of Richard (Joel Edgerton) and Mildred...

With only three performances remaining in Broadway's Long Day's Journey Into Night which closes this Sunday, here's Eric to talk Jessica Lange's long and awards-full career.
Jessica Lange recently became the 22nd actor to complete the official Triple Crown of Acting (performers who have won competitive Oscar, Tony, and Emmy Awards - full list prior to Jessica). It’s an exciting moment in time, as winning the big three isn’t easy.
Ten of her Triple Crown peers are still alive and all working to one degree or another: Rita Moreno, Jeremy Irons, Vanessa Redgrave, Maggie Smith, Al Pacino, Geoffrey Rush, Ellen Burstyn, Christopher Plummer, Helen Mirren, and Frances McDormand. All of these actors have had decades-long success and still get enough offers for splashy roles that it’s not inconceivable that almost any of them could win another late-career major award.

The 67-year-old actress nabbed the Tony for best actress in a leading role in a play at Sunday night's 2016 Tony Awards, leaving her just one award short of an Egot. Defeating the likes of Lupita Nyong'o and Michelle Williams, Lange took home the trophy for Long Day's Journey Into Night. "This is a dream come true and it fills me with such happiness even on such a sad day as this," Lange said while accepting the award, acknowledging the tragic mass shooting in Orlando. Quick Hits• Last Year's Winner: Richard Jenkins, "Olive Kitteridge" • Was It an Upset? Yes. Though it was a split decision 'til the end, David Oyelowo ("Nightingale") was seen by many as the favorite.• Still Eligible? No• Hot Streak: Despite the proliferation of limited series in the past few years, some smaller networks have managed to earn trophies. PBS, History and ReelzChannel have won in the last five years alone.• Fun Fact: None other than Laurence Olivier has the most wins in this category with four — "The Moon and Sixpence" (1960), "Long Day's Journey into Night" (1973), "Love Among the Ruins" (1975), and "King Lear" (1984). While not quite as crazy as the Oscars, the Emmys aren’t free from category fraud, so who, exactly, ends up representing their chosen TV shows is still uncertain — and the choices each network makes in this regard will certainly play a big part in shaping...

In what we're choosing to interpret as a "changing of the guard" moment, two Book of Mormon stars (Andrew Rannells and Nikki M. James) announced the Hamilton Awards this morning. Or, rather, the Tony Award Nominations though the bulk of them went to the hot show of the now, Hamilton. In fact it busted the previous record of most nominations which was 15 (held jointly by The Producers and Billy Elliott) by 1 nomination. Shouldn't Rory O'Malley have been present, too, in this announcement since he's the only Tony-nominated Book of Mormon alum in Hamilton (having just replaced Jonathan Groff)?
The Tony Awards will be held on June 12th and broadcast on CBS at 8 pm Est.

The contenders for this year's Tony Awards have been announced - and to no surprise, Hamilton stole the show, while making history. Lin-Manuel Miranda's hip-hop-infused Broadway hit snagged a record-breaking 16 nominations, including best musical and three nods for Miranda himself: best leading actor in a musical, best original score and best book of a musical. The musical Shuffle Along, Or the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed trailed Hamilton with a total of 10 nominations. Other notable stars who snagged noms include Jeff Daniels and Michelle Williams for their performances in Blackbird, Lupita Nyong'o for Eclipsed...

Back in February, Warner Bros. confirmed that Justice League Part 1 will start production on April 11, but the studio has yet to reveal a full cast list for the first installment of this two-part movie, both of which will be directed by Zack Snyder. We know that Batman (Ben Affleck), Superman (Henry Cavill) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) will return from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, along with Aquaman (Jason Momoa), The Flash (Ezra Miller) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher), who all had cameos in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Today we have word that another Batman v Superman character will be returning for the two-part Justice League movie, Jeremy Irons' Alfred Pennyworth.
The actor confirmed his return to Showbiz 411, although it isn't known if he has already started shooting his scenes for the movie yet. The actor recently wrapped up a run on the London stage in Long Day's Journey Into Night,...

Constance Cummings: Stage and film actress ca. early 1940s. Constance Cummings on stage: From Sacha Guitry to Clifford Odets (See previous post: “Constance Cummings: Flawless 'Blithe Spirit,' Supporter of Political Refugees.”) In the post-World War II years, Constance Cummings' stage reputation continued to grow on the English stage, in plays as diverse as: Stephen Powys (pseudonym for P.G. Wodehouse) and Guy Bolton's English-language adaptation of Sacha Guitry's Don't Listen, Ladies! (1948), with Cummings as one of shop clerk Denholm Elliott's mistresses (the other one was Betty Marsden). “Miss Cummings and Miss Marsden act as fetchingly as they look,” commented The Spectator. Rodney Ackland's Before the Party (1949), delivering “a superb performance of controlled hysteria” according to theater director and Michael Redgrave biographer Alan Strachan, writing for The Independent at the time of Cummings' death. Constance Cummings: Actress in minor Hollywood movies became major London stage star. Constance Cummings: Actress went from Harold Lloyd and Frank Capra to Noël Coward and Eugene O'Neill Actress Constance Cummings, whose career spanned more than six decades on stage, in films, and on television in both the U.S. and the U.K., died ten years ago on Nov. 23. Unlike other Broadway imports such as Ann Harding, Katharine Hepburn, Miriam Hopkins, and Claudette Colbert, the pretty, elegant Cummings – who could have been turned into a less edgy Constance Bennett had she landed at Rko or Paramount instead of Columbia – never became a Hollywood star. In fact, her most acclaimed work, whether in films or – more frequently – on stage, was almost invariably found in British productions. That's most likely why the name Constance Cummings – despite the DVD availability of several of her best-received performances – is all but forgotten.

When Jessica Lange announced that she wouldn't be appearing in American Horror Story: Hotel, fans were distraught. She's been an integral part of the show since its inception, first appearing in a pivotal supporting role in Murder House and then taking the lead with bravado in Asylum. In Freak Show, she basically performed showstoppers exclusively, including her super-uncomfortable versions of David Bowie's "Life on Mars?" and Lana Del Rey's "Gods and Monsters." She's starring in the road-trip comedy Wild Oats this fall, opposite Shirley MacLaine and Demi Moore, and will return to Broadway next year for a revival of Long Day's Journey Into Night. But Lange isn't gone from American Horror Story for good. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, series creator Ryan Murphy said: "It’s always possible. I’m trying to deal with her play schedule. Jessica is always about the character. She’ll be back—she’s not gone forever.

Jessica Lange will return to Broadway for the first time in over a decade next spring, with the Eugene O'Neill classic Long Day's Journey Into Night. Lange reprises the role of the morphine-addled matriarch Mary Tyrone, a character she played in London's West End back in 2000, for which she received an Olivier nomination. She'll co-star alongside In Treatment's Gabriel Byrne, who plays the patriarch of the family, James Tyrone, and John Gallagher Jr., as their son Edmund. But if you thought that this would be a Ryan Murphy–free universe, you would be mistaken! The New York Times reports that Murphy holds the stage rights to the play and approached Todd Haimes, the director of the Roundabout Theater Company, about producing the play with Lange, who is maybe playing Elsa Mars playing Mary Tyrone. After all, everything is connected.

April 9th will mark the four year anniversary of director Sidney Lumet's passing, at age 86. Lumet was the first director I interviewed whose one-sheet posters hung on my wall as a kid. He was an idol, an icon, and an inspiration. I wasn't yet 30 in April 1997, when I met him at The Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills for our interview at the press junket for "Night Falls On Manhattan," one of his solid, authentic urban dramas that blended crime, politics and personal revelations that became his signature.
Lumet immediately put any butterflies I had at ease. Diminutive, but with the infectious energy of a teenager, his was a disarming presence. He paid me a compliment on my sportcoat, saying that I looked a bit like the young Mickey Rourke (which I still don't see, but what the hell), then went on to regale me for an hour with...

Teresa Wright and Matt Damon in 'The Rainmaker' Teresa Wright: From Marlon Brando to Matt Damon (See preceding post: "Teresa Wright vs. Samuel Goldwyn: Nasty Falling Out.") "I'd rather have luck than brains!" Teresa Wright was quoted as saying in the early 1950s. That's understandable, considering her post-Samuel Goldwyn choice of movie roles, some of which may have seemed promising on paper.[1] Wright was Marlon Brando's first Hollywood leading lady, but that didn't help her to bounce back following the very public spat with her former boss. After all, The Men was released before Elia Kazan's film version of A Streetcar Named Desire turned Brando into a major international star. Chances are that good film offers were scarce. After Wright's brief 1950 comeback, for the third time in less than a decade she would be gone from the big screen for more than a year.
