In many countries, the movie is released under its original name "Gay Purr-ee". In some countries, however, where English is somewhat known, but not the main language, parents are not eager to rent the movie as it seems to be XXX-rated. But this is based on a misunderstanding.
When the movie was released, the word "gay" normally meant "fun" or "happy". Although the meaning "homosexual" goes back at least to the 1920s, it was not known to the general public until years later.
"Purr" comes from the verb "to purr", the snoring-like noise made by a happy cat; add "ee" to it and it becomes "Purr-ee", a play on the French pronunciation of Paris, "Pair-ee". And "Gay Paree" (the usual spelling) had been a proverbial name for Paris in English at least since World War I.
Furthermore, the "Gay Nineties" is a term sometimes used to refer to the 1890s, which is the time period in which this takes place.
