However, the director himself is shrouded in gloom, and that aspect becomes glaringly obvious in a recent documentary, Hayao Miyazaki and the Heron, by Kaku Arakawa. It chronicles Miyazaki’s journey of six years behind his production of the Oscar-winning movie The Boy and the Heron.

Here, we get an intimate look at the nihilistic yet melancholic man that Miyazaki has become. His struggles with creativity and mortality make him more human than ever before, showcasing a dark side of his world.

Like everyone else, when I first saw the trailer for Netflix’s “Hot Frosty” — about a snowman who comes to life to charm a single woman in a small town — I groaned and giggled at the same time. It felt like a parody of the cheesy Christmas TV movie genre, the kind of simplistic, home-for-the-holidays fun that Hallmark has long championed and Netflix has successfully showcased to a younger audience over the last handful of years. I figured I’d half-watch at some point while also imbibing in some holiday cheer when doom-scrolling got a little too bleak.

Well.

I finally viewed the 90-minute smash starring Dustin Milligan as the titular Frosty and Lacey Chabert, and while it’s not winning any Emmys, it’s a sweet, surprisingly charming outing that should be able to hold its own entertaining both your parents and any teens in your life this holiday season.

Although The Big Bang Theory never took Sheldon’s problems with Frosty the Snowman seriously, the Netflix holiday movie Hot Frosty used this gag as the basis of its entire plot a decade and a half later. Of all The Big Bang Theory’s cast of characters, Sheldon was always the least likely to care about Christmas and the holidays. A fastidious figure who was obstinate and solitary at the best of times, Sheldon had a particularly intense aversion to anything resembling mandatory fun. Even in The Big Bang Theory’s finale, this side of his character’s personality had scarcely softened.

It wouldn't be a Christmas film without a bit of magic, and Hot Frosty's fantastical elements all come down to one simple red scarf. The Netflix Christmas movie, directed by Jerry Ciccoritti and written by Russell Hainline, tells the tale of a snowman who comes to life one night and subsequently falls in love with the woman responsible for his humanity. Of course, this impressive feat in Hot Frosty would not have been possible without a bit of magic.

Lacey Chabert is a certified Christmas movie queen as she has starred in more than a dozen holiday films on the Hallmark Channel, but Hot Frosty marks her first Netflix Christmas project.

The cast of Hot Frosty includes Lacey Chabert as Kathy Barrett, the woman who (unknowingly) brings the snowman to life, and Dustin Milligan as Jack Snowman, the aforementioned man of snow.

Once again, Survivor succeeds in spite of itself. The episode spent (wasted?) so much time on a long challenge, and a journey – a journey with a hilariously bad challenge. And it was all at the expense of lots of last minute scrambling and strategizing before the vote. Sometimes it’s as simple as the show getting out of its own way and letting the players cook. The obsession with lost votes and the journey and other nonsense keeps getting in the way. Still a decent episode overall, but could have been much better.

A holiday TV staple is switching channels this year from the first time in half a century: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer will air on NBC this December after airing on CBS every year since 1972, NBC announced on Friday.

A special 75-minute edition of Rudolph will air Friday, Dec. 6 at 8/7c on NBC to mark its 60th anniversary. The stop-motion animated classic based on the beloved Christmas carol is closely associated with CBS, but it actually debuted on NBC back in 1964, airing there until it moved to CBS eight years later.

Horror for Christmas? Yes, I’m here to holly your jolly, deck your halls, and sacrifice your children to Krampus. What a merry holiday season indeed! Since our October vid focused on Halloween Specials, I figured the Spooky Christmas crossovers deserved some attention as well.

As a kid, my family did have Christmas watching traditions like most. We did Scrooged, A Christmas Story, Frosty, Charlie Brown, Garfield, Home Alone, Gremlins (Ahhhh it’s controversial), Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands…and my mom may have snuck in Black Christmas. She was and is a fan of Holiday-based Horror. Her favorite being My Bloody Valentine. All of this is totally normal. So, as you can probably guess, the tradition has continued.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas — except on subscription streaming, where you still can’t find classic Rankin/Bass holiday specials like “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”

“Rudolph,” the 1964 Animagic stop-motion TV special was produced by Videocraft International — later renamed Rankin/Bass — for broadcast network NBC and sponsor General Electric. Five years later, Rankin/Bass Productions, now actually named Rankin/Bass Productions after Videocraft founders Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass, made the animated “Frosty the Snowman” special for broadcast network CBS.

In 1972 “Rudolph” joined “Frosty” at CBS, where they have remained for more than 50 years. In recent times, “Rudolph” and “Frosty” have also been a part of the Disney-owned cable channel Freeform’s “25 Days of Christmas” marathons. Though they run simultaneously, broadcast and cable are contractually considered different “windows” here, several sources with knowledge of the deals told IndieWire. The Rankin/Bass specials are also available on DVD and Blu-ray.

“Grease” fans hungry for a cool slider or hopelessly devoted to fries will have a chance to indulge via a pop-up version of the film franchise’s Frosty Palace on Thursday, April 6, and Friday, April 7. Paramount+ has partnered with Popsugar to take over Mel’s Drive-In on Sunset Blvd. in West Hollywood for the promotion, timed to the upcoming launch of the new series “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies.”

It’s unclear whether Danny Zuko’s preferred order (a double Polar Burger with everything and a cherry soda with chocolate ice cream) will be available, but the two-day interactive event will include 1950s-era music and decor, as well as “twists on familiar diner fare” and photo moments. “Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies” merchandise will also be given away and customized on site.

Freeform’s part in ESPN’s multi-network “MegaCast” of this Sunday afternoon’s NFL Wild Card game between the Baltimore Ravens and Tennessee Titans will include a halftime show hosted by DJ Khaled (watch teaser above) and a “Watch Party” featuring, among others, stars of the cabler’s assorted series.

While ESPN and ABC offer a “traditional” simulcast of the Jan. 10 NFL game, Freeform’s coverage will feature a “Watch Party” during which guests delve into an array of topics (about the game and pop culture) with ESPN’s Jesse Palmer and Maria Taylor — in a multi-window format that always keeps the gridiron action on-screen.

Freeform is getting back into Good Trouble in the new year: Season 3 of the Fosters spinoff will premiere Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 10/9c, the network announced Monday via Twitter. (Watch the date reveal below.)

The Season 2 finale, which aired back in early March, featured several big twists/questions that will be unpacked in the upcoming episodes. For Jamie and Callie, who moved out of her beau’s apartment, “the question for the premiere of Season 3 is: Are they really broken up? It’s definitely pending. I don’t think it’s clear yet,” executive producer Joanna Johnson told TVLine during a post mortem Q&a.

Since we’ve all had just about enough of 2020, let’s look forward to the new year ahead — more specifically, the TV that awaits us in 2021.

The battle of words between Justice League actor Ray Fisher and Warner Bros. has just gotten a lot more complicated, as Aquaman star Jason Momoa has publicly come out in support of his Justice League co-star and denounced Warner at the same time for putting out a fake announcement that Momoa is working on a new Frosty the Snowman movie with the studio. Momoa took to Instagram to post a picture of himself sitting with Fisher at Comic-Con, along with the following strongly-worded message.

"This Shit Has To Stop And Needs To Be Looked At @ray8fisher And Everyone Else Who Experienced What Happen Under The Watch Of @wbpictures Needs Proper Investigation I just think it's fucked up that people released a fake Frosty announcement without my permission to try to distract from Ray Fisher speaking up about the shitty way we were treated on Justice League reshoots. Serious stuff went down.

The Snyder Cut of Justice League might finally be in the works for HBO Max to the delight of fans everywhere that had spent two and a half years trying to make it happen, but it would appear the behind the scenes turmoil that seemed to engulf the movie at every turn is far from over.

After star Ray Fisher publicly called out replacement director Joss Whedon for his behavior on set, many former collaborators also revealed that they’d had similar experiences working with the Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator, lending weight to Fisher’s claims. The 32 year-old showed no signs of backing down, either, and essentially invited legal action against himself if what he was saying turned out to be untrue.

Warner Bros. launched an official investigation into the matter, and somehow things have only gotten messier from there. Not only did the studio officially deny Fisher’s claims,...

Jason Momoa has spoken out about his experience on the “Justice League” set, saying he, Ray Fisher and other cast members were treated in a “s—ty way” by Warner Bros.

On Sept. 8, the “Aquaman” star first showed support for Fisher and his allegations of “abusive” and “unprofessional” behavior from director Joss Whedon and producers Geoff Johns and Jon Berg while filming “Justice League.” Momoa was the first “Justice League” star to show solidarity with Fisher, posting to his Instagram Story with the hashtag #IStandWithRayFisher.

On Monday evening, however, Momoa directly commented on his own experience while making “Justice League.”

“This s— has to stop and needs to be looked at @ray8fisher and everyone else who experienced what [happened] under the watch of @wbpictures needs proper investigation,” Momoa wrote on Instagram.

Update, Sept. 14, 4:42Pm: Jason Momoa continued to voice his support on his Instagram for Ray Fisher after the actor claimed he was mistreated by Joss Whedon during the reshoots of Justice League. Momoa, in a detailed post, slammed his Aquaman studio Warner Bros., demanding a proper investigation, dismissing the studio’s “fake Frosty” response to the Fisher incident and backing his Justice League co-star’s claims that they were treated “shitty” during reshoots and that “serious stuff went down”.

Jason Momoa is standing by his co-star Ray Fisher in demanding a proper investigation into the reshoots of the 2017 comic book tentpole “Justice League.” Fisher first made accusations against “Justice League” reshoots director Joss Whedon in July, when he posted on Twitter that the director’s “on-set treatment of the cast and crew of ‘Justice League’ was gross, abusive, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable.” Fisher added that producers Geoff Johns and Jon Berg enabled Whedon.

“This shit has to stop and needs to be looked at,” Momoa wrote on social media. “Ray Fisher and everyone else who experienced what happened under the watch of Warner Bros. needs proper investigation. I just think it’s fucked up that people released a fake Frosty announcement without my permission to try to distract from Ray Fisher speaking up about the shitty way we were treated on ‘Justice League’ reshoots.”

Welp, today in news I never could've possibly predicted, even with help from the most powerful crystal ball on Earth: Jason Momoa is set to voice Frosty the Snowman in a live-action remake of the classic holiday film. Yes, you read that correctly. The unavoidably sexy star of Aquaman is swapping his trident for a corncob pipe to play the role of a jolly, seemingly innocent character that would be borderline sacrilegious to thirst after. To be honest, when I first learned about this out-of-left-field news, my initial thought was, "Wait, did the clocks roll back and it's April Fools' Day again?" But upon further reflection (and repeated glances at my calendar), I've decided to chalk it up to 2020 just doing its thing and continuing to deliver curveball after curveball.

“Aquaman” himself, Jason Momoa, is in negotiations to star as Frosty the Snowman in a movie for Warner Bros.

Momoa will voice Frosty in the live-action/CG hybrid. Framestore UK will do the animation.

Momoa will also produce with Geoff Johns, and Stampede’s Greg Silverman and Jon Berg. David Berenbaum, who collaborated with Berg on “Elf,” is on board to script the pic.

“We know Jason’s a true human being filled with love, compassion and a deep connection to ohana … all of which is the living spirit of Xmas and Frosty,” Silverman said.

Momoa’s “Aquaman” was a massive hit for Warner Bros., grossing $1.14 billion at the worldwide box office. The studio is developing a sequel.

I loved cartoons on Saturday mornings growing up, but I looked forward to watching them in primetime during the holidays. There must have been some magic in that old silk ratings hat they found, as the annual CBS airing of the animated Frosty the Snowman topped the night’s ratings wars.

The 50th airing of the Rankin-Bass animation special, based on the Walter E. Rollins and Steve Nelson song and featuring the voices of Jimmy Durante, Bille De Wolfe and Jackie Vernon, had an 0.7 rating among the 18-49 set and drew a total audience of 4.04 million in the 8 Pm slot. The numbers were steady with last year’s airing.

CBS doubled down on its Frosty magic with an 8:30 Pm airing of Frosty Returns.The 1992 special, featuring Jonathan Winters as the narrator and John Goodman doing the Frosty voice (with music by Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh) had an 0.6 and 3.45 million audience. Repeats of Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods closed out the eye network’s night.

At Fox, the WWE Friday...

CBS’ Frosty the Snowman broadcast on Friday drew 4 million total viewers and a 0.7 rating, holding steady versus last year to tie for the nightly demo win. Leading out of that, Frosty Returns (3.5 mil/0.6) was also steady, while a Blue Bloods rerun delivered Friday’s largest audience (4.4 million).

Sharing the win with Frosty was Fox’s Friday Night SmackDown, which with 2.3 mil and a 0.7 was down a tick from last week.
