This was a considerably expanded version of Ken Hughes' famous TV play, "Sammy (1958)," which had won rave reviews in 1958. The TV play had lasted only a half-hour and had only one actor in it: Anthony Newley, who moved into stardom as a result of his award-winning performance. This film version did not enjoy similar success.
Julia Foster had been promised a body double for the striptease sequence, but had to do it anyway when the other girl proved unsuitable.
In the opening credits, a cinema marquee advertising "Naked as Nature Intended (1961)" appears. This was done as a favor to the film's director George Harrison Marks, who was a friend of this film's star, Anthony Newley.
The £300 that Sammy Lee owes in 1963 would be the equivalent of around £5,100 in 2023.
