There is no shortage of Homer-centered episodes in The Simpsons, classics where the Dan Castellaneta-voiced patriarch is at the forefront, like “Homer at the Bat” and “Colonel Homer.” But the episodes where Homer is reunited with his mother, Mona, played by the iconic Glenn Close, are arguably the most personal. It’s among the only times we really ever see Homer in a deep, complex, emotional state – one that can't be settled by a donut – and because these episodes give unprecedented depth to the character, they forge a storyline that stands as Homer's biggest and best.

Those in attendance at the San Diego Comic-Con panel for The Walking Dead: Dead City this past summer got a glimpse of some truly exciting footage for fans of the long-running zombie franchise: the return of Lucille, Negan's faithful barbed-wire baseball bat. The last we saw of Lucille was on the original Walking Dead series, when Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) set the instrument of terror on fire to atone for his violent ways. With the clip showing Negan swinging Lucille again while whistling, it possibly indicates Negan will once again rely on some of his darker impulses. The how and why of Negan's trajectory back toward true evil remains to be seen.
As exciting as it was for fans to see Lucille back in action, it was even more of a thrill for Morgan. When asked by Collider how it felt to pick up the bat again, the actor had this to say:
Well,...

A moody cityscape in black and white. A heavily fortified bank. A masked and caped figure uses a grappling hook to scale the walls. There’s a crime in progress and a mystery about to unfold – yet it will be another 13 years before the world first encounters the legend that is Batman.
Long thought to be a lost film, Roland West’s 1926 comedy thriller The Bat was salvaged by the UCLA Film and Television Archive in the late 1980s, but it has only recently returned to prominence, thanks to the dedicated efforts of restorationist and musician Ben Model. Model’s score accompanies the otherwise silent scenes in keeping with the traditions of its era, adding an emotional element which nicely balances the pithy dialogue in the intertitles.

In 1926, Roland West’s silent horror comedy The Bat wowed cinema audiences with its story of criminal daring and double-crosses set in a mysterious mansion. Today, it gets attention for another reason; as a clear precursor to the story of Batman. Long thought to be lost, it has recently been restored and brought back to the big screen by Undercrank Productions. I recently spoke with producer Ben Model, a musician who has provided live accompaniment for numerous such films in cinemas, who told me the story of The Bat and of his ongoing work in recovering the lost treasures of the silent era.
"The Bat was pretty much missing for decades,” he begins. “A nitrate print turned up in Boise, Idaho in the late 1980s. And a professor at Boise State named Tom Trusky, and Frank Thompson – a well-known film historian and author – ensured that the nitrate made.

Director Roland West is largely forgotten today by all but the most devoted classic film buffs, but in his time, he was popular enough to be prominently featured in advertising for movies like “The Bat Whispers,” which showcased West’s name above the title on the poster.
That 1930 talkie was a remake of a movie West had directed only four years earlier called “The Bat,” and both films had a profound impact on comic book artist Bob Kane; he saw them as a child, and their imagery — especially a bat shadow cast on walls like a signal — informed his most beloved and enduring creation, Batman.
West would be worthy of serious study regardless of his influence on Kane’s iconic superhero; he was a gifted director of crime films and thrillers whose expressive visual style looked forward less to DC comics than to the golden age of film noir. He...

Danny DeVito is open to reprising his role as Penguin in a Batman movie and teaming up with Arnold Schwarzenegger's Mr. Freeze. Despite Penguin's death in Batman Returns, DeVito joked about the possibility of reuniting on-screen with Schwarzenegger and Michael Keaton. DeVito and Schwarzenegger are working on a new project together, hinting at another movie to come very soon after many years of trying.
Danny DeVito would be all-in to reprise his Batman Returns role as Oswald Cobblepot aka Penguin, and wouldn’t mind teaming up with Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Mr Freeze to take on Michael Keaton’s Batman. Following their hilarious Oscars moment last month, there has been endless talk of whether it would be possible for any of the three actors to reprise their former comic book roles, with DeVito’s semi-joking comments being just the latest.

Robin Damian Wayne earns the title of "The Bat-Exorcist" for his unique ability to use crocodile tears to exorcise spirits from Krampus. The skill of using tears as a disarming tactic is likely to be a unique ability for Damian, as his older siblings and father crying may not be as effective, given that they are predominantly adults. If Batman started crying during an encounter with one of his rogues, they might be so disturbed by the sight that they’d surrender right on the spot.
Robin Damian Wayne has mastered a new skill that’s even absent from Batman's own arsenal of abilities. This skill is as essential as it is unconventional and has resulted in Damian earning the title “The Bat-Exorcist.” While there's still time for Batman and the other Bats to learn this game-changing ability, they may not demonstrate the same level of effectiveness in executing it as Robin does.

Horror has birthed many subgenres over the years -- and slasher and splatter films are two of its most popular categories. These kinds of movies are not for the squeamish or faint of heart. As their names suggest, they’re all about murder, bloodshed, and violence. Even their biggest fans need to sometimes watch these films through the cracks between their fingers. For casual movie-goers, there may not seem to be much of a difference between these two subgenres at all. a difference between these two horror subgenres. Let’s take a look at their biggest differences, the history of each, and the iconic franchises that made them both popular.

The Old Dark House of 1932 is often believed to be the first Hollywood slasher, but it would be fair to say, that the 1926 silent film, The Bat, was what paved the way for "old dark house" films and made this genre popular and successful in the years that followed. The story of “guests in a remote mansion menaced by a killer in a grotesque mask” explored in the film became a trope and a template for an exhaustive list of slasher thrillers that Hollywood holds in its treasure. Blockbuster franchises like Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Scream, and similar others that followed that trope defined the Golden Age of the slasher genre from the 70s through the early 00s. And with recent reboots and remakes of these franchises and newer additions to the genre, we now find ourselves in a new generation of terrifying but gripping stories of a maniacal killers haunting and hounding multiple victims.

Warning: Spoilers for Batman #135 / #900The Caped Crusader is still going strong after eight decades, and Batman #900 is a must-read for any Bat-fan. This milestone issue explores Batman's legacy across page and screen, and, more than anything else, it is a true artistic triumph.
Though this latest issue is technically Batman #135, DC has done the math: with the previous volumes of the Batman title added in, Batman #135 is also Batman #900, a major milestone for one of the longest continuously-running superhero comic books. One would think that after eight decades of Batman stories, the book would start to fall short, but the latest arc has been delivering an exciting multiverse story. Bruce Wayne has been exiled and lost in an alternate Gotham—one without a Batman, despite its intense darkness. The major threat of "The Bat-Man of Gotham" is Red Mask, this universe's "sane" but just-as-evil version of the Joker. The...

Although Christopher Nolan is one of the most celebrated filmmakers working today thanks to the way he revolutionized how the industry uses IMAX cameras, he has also been known to break a few of them. The director often delivers clever, mind-bending, and mostly original action blockbusters, which is rare in the current cinematic landscape, and his movies have made over $4 billion worldwide (via The Numbers). Whether it's the war epic Dunkirk, the sci-fi time travel flick Tenet, or the beloved Dark Knight trilogy, Nolan has brought stunning, seemingly impossible-to-shoot action sequences to the big screen, and they must be watched on the biggest screen possible.
While Nolan is trying new things with Oppenheimer (filming only parts of it in black and white while keeping the explosions are in color), he hasn't strayed too far from his usual trademarks, continuing to film in IMAX, which have a higher resolution than other...

Chicago – The tradition of the music salon goes as far back as 16th Century Italy, and is designed as a destination “either to please or to educate.” On May 7th, 2022, Soprano Kirsten Leslie Karadzhova and pianist Paul Dykstra will present the first Art Song Series at Dykstra’s “Salon des Artiste” music studio in the Fine Arts Building on Michigan Avenue in Chicago. For complete details regarding this “free to the public” event, see below.
The duo will perform the song cycle “Clairières dans le ciel,” Lili Boulanger composer. Boulanger (1893-1918) was a child music prodigy who had a tragically short life, passing away at age 24, but in her time won the Prix de Rome composition prize, the first female to do so. Her father Ernest Boulanger also won that prize.

Matt Reeves' "The Batman" is easily the most-hyped event film to hit theaters in 2022 so far (sorry "Uncharted"). "If we don't stand up, no one will." Who's ready for another slice of Batman? Warner Bros has dropped a new trailer for Matt Reeves' The Batman dubbed "The Bat and The Cat" about the Batman vs Catwoman feud in the movie. We've already featured numerous trailers, including the full trailer and an extra Japanese trailer with more footage. In his second year of fighting crime, Batman uncovers corruption in Gotham City that connects to his own family while facing a serial killer known as the Riddler. The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as the "Caped Crusader", with Andy Serkis as Alfred, Zoe Kravitz as "Catwoman", Jeffrey Wright as Gordon, plus Colin Farrell as Cobblepot, Paul Dano as Nashton, John Turturro as Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard. I'm loving the focus in this particular trailer on these two superheroes - there's an entire movie about just them to watch. And then there's all those villains!

Chicago – One of the classic show business turns is the Sister Act, and one of Chicago’s up-and-coming are the Leslie Sister Duo. Kirsten and Regina Leslie have been performing both separately and together for all their lives, and will take their latest iteration to Le Piano in Chicago on November 22nd, 2021. For reservation info, click Sister Act.
Regina Leslie began studying violin at age five. By the time she was age eight, she had begun her performing career, where she played and sang at various events. This early performing experience was prime preparation for her eclectic career, which balances itself between appearing as violinist, actor and singer. She has appeared in many roles locally, including in “Cyrano de Bergerac” (Chicago Shakespeare Theatre), “A Christmas Carol” (Goodman Theatre) and “Wonderland” (Chicago Children’s Theatre), as well as National and Regional Touring credits.

When it comes to casting a Batman movie, the most crucial part to cast is Bruce Wayne. But when Wayne has been cast, there are still plenty of other roles to fill: ancillary characters like Commissioner Gordon, love interests like Vicki Vale, and above all, the villains. The Bat has one of superhero comics’ most iconic rogue’s galleries, and it’s very important to find the right actor to play each villain.

Sonic the Hedgehog had a rocky 2019, with the film dominating headlines for its frankly horrific CGI redesign of the blue blur. But, to Paramount’s credit, they paid attention to fans’ displeasure, reworked Sonic and delayed the pic a few months. This was clearly the right thing to do, too, as it’s made $306 million worldwide and boasts an impressive 93% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
One of the few criticisms that fans had was that the film almost exclusively featured Sonic and Dr. Robotnik, and not any of the extensive supporting cast from the games. But, right at the end came a tease that more was in store, with Sonic’s perennial sidekick Miles “Tails” Prower appearing. He was only on screen for a few seconds, but was still one of the most popular things in the movie.

Batman has a huge list of great villains that stands up against any other superhero in Marvel or DC. With names like Joker, Penguin, Riddler, Mr. Freeze, Catwoman, Poison Ivy and so many more, even the lesser used Batman villains are better than some main villains. However, there is one villain that did something that the others couldn't accomplish -- Bane actually broke The Bat.

The casting for Matt Reeves' The Batman will begin soon. We came up with our own list of favorites for the role.
The Bat is dead. Long live The Batman. As reported by Deadline, Ben Affleck will be stepping down from the role of the Caped Crusader following three appearances in the Dceu. That means a new Dark Knight will be needed for writer/director Matt Reeves’ confirmed June 2021 film The Batman.
While there is still much we don’t yet know about Reeves’ take, he told The Hollywood Reporter it will be a “point-of-view driven, noir Batman tale” with the hero in detective mode. He said it will be “thrilling and emotional” and feature a gallery of Batman rogues. While he has said it is not a Batman: Year One story, he confirmed to THR that the character will undergo a transformation. Deadline reports we...

How the hell do I introduce a legend like Vincent Price? This is a guy who has starred in scores of horror roles and carried the banner for the genre in an era when the public saw it as little more than a breeding ground for psychopaths and miscreants. There isn’t much that I can say about this man that hasn’t been said a dozen times over, but I do have this: Vincent Price looked very much like my grandma. Or I suppose my grandma looked very much like Vincent Price. Don’t get me wrong, she was a beautiful lady, but she had Price’s ability to raise an eyebrow in a way to convey pretty much any emotion (usually mild annoyance). So for me, sitting down for a Vincent Price flick is like sitting down with a family member. Sure, he’s typically evil to a mustache-twirling degree,...

Genre fans have a quiet week of home entertainment releases ahead of them as February 16th features only a handful of horror and sci-fi Blu-ray and DVD offerings. That being said, cult and classic horror film fanatics should be ecstatic with several of the Blus coming out on Tuesday, including The Vincent Price Collection III, The Mutilator, Curse of the Faceless Man and My Science Project, featuring none other than the legendary Dennis Hopper.
Other releases this week include Estranged and Riddle Room.
Curse of the Faceless Man (Kino Lorber, Blu-ray)
Entombed for eons and turned to stone... the Volcano Man of 2,000 years ago stalks the earth to claim his woman! A team of archeologists, led by Dr. Paul Mallon (Richard Anderson, TV’s The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman) excavates a perfectly preserved faceless man of stone encased in lava from a site at ancient Pompeii.

The Film Detective Archives refurbishes the forgotten 1959 film version of The Bat, an adaptation of a play by Depression era mystery writer Mary Roberts Rhinehart (co-written with Avery Hopwood in 1920), a woman referred to as the American Agatha Christie. A previous film version was made in 1926 by Roland West, followed by a 1930 sequel. Concerning a criminal who dresses in a bat costume and terrorizes people while committing crimes, Rhinehart’s character was the basis for American comic book artist Bob Kane’s creation of Batman. Thus, it’s an intriguing ‘origin’ property for several reasons. This particular version, which stands as the last official directorial credit of writer and B-film director Crane Wilbur, is also rather entertaining thanks to its two headlining stars, the inimitable Vincent Price and a rare leading role for the superb character actress, Agnes Moorehead.

Whether you’re all for 3D, or have reserved a special place in hell for those awkward glasses, it would seem that it is here to stay. Long before it turned into the latest service fee added onto the bill of your movie going experience, 3D was a fun (and new) twist for film lovers. And with House of Wax (1953), Warner Bros. created not only the first color major studio 3D film, but one of the finest horror films of the 50’s, period.
Released in April of ’53, House of Wax was a pricey venture (1 million Us to produce), but one that Warner Bros. was willing to bank on after the smash 3D success of Bwana Devil (1952), an independent production. By this point, the major studios were desperate to get people back to the movies, as that new and nasty little box called television halved theatre attendance. What they achieved with...

The 75th anniversary celebration of Batman continues. Many lovers of the recent grim takes on Batman first took an interest in the DC Comics character via a much more lighthearted look: the campy 1960′s Batman TV series that starred Adam West and Burt Ward. The infectiously fun comic book adaptation is coming to Blu-ray, and fans of the cowled crusader should be excited by the special features and collectibles that range from new interviews to vintage trading cards.

The Bat is a fun movie a Sunday afternoon movie that would have (and did) showed up years ago during the horror matinee on TV. The acting performances are all overdone and on purpose its hilarious and entertaining how films done in the 50s were played as if the performers were onstage in front of a live audience. Way over the top and stylized making the whole presentation engaging and entertaining. Agnes Moorhead is a bit inconsistent in this feature however changing general character type here and there but ultimately an argument can be made that when she got into mystery writer mode she indeed was a bit different than the author in normal life. Vincent Price is solid as he always is and really makes for a film thats comfy.

P.S. After seeing ‘The Bat’ 7 out of 8 people will get cold feet tonight!
Okay, I’ve gotta be honest. I don’t even know what that tagline for the 1959, murder mystery, ‘The Bat,’ means, but evidently it’s supposed to be menacing. Much like a majority of the film. It’s supposed to be foreboding and full of danger. It’s not. In the end, fun as it might be for the sheer entertainment value, ‘The Bat’ is nothing more than a stagy, hokey version of a story that had been twice before in the film world.
Based on the stage play from the 1920s, ‘The Bat’ tells the story of a masked killer who strikes his victims with steel claws. Throw into a large mansion, a missing, million dollars,a mystery novelist, and about 84 secondary characters who serve one of two purposes (suspect or victim) and you’ve...
