Leonard Nimoy was one of the most beloved TV actors of the 20th century, but he also admitted in interviews over the years that –- despite growing up the Jewish son of Ukrainian immigrants –- he made his career in the pre-"Star Trek" days playing Native American characters. Among other instances of "redface," he played a Comanche warrior in the TV show "Tate," a character named Chief Black Hawk in the film "Old Overland Trail," and a mysterious Native who seeks justice for his murdered white friend in an episode of the wildly popular show "Gunsmoke."
Nimoy spoke fondly about his role on "Gunsmoke" in an interview with the Archive of American Television back in 2000 (he passed away in 2015). The actor recalled having met the star of the long-running Western series, James Arness, years earlier when the two were in the same acting troupe. Nimoy eventually went into the military,...

Praise Russell T Davies and his list of demands – Doctor Who is coming back to Saturday nights!
There’s no more guesswork required as to when the three 60th anniversary specials will air; the BBC has confirmed that we’ll get one a week starting from Saturday November 25, two days after the show’s official birthday on Thursday 23, and continuing on Saturday December 2 and Saturday December 9.
The exact BBC One time slots have yet to be announced, but common sense says that we’re looking at the pre-Strictly Come Dancing six to seven pm hour in the UK. If Disney+ is synchronising the streaming release worldwide, that would make it somewhere around lunchtime in the US. We’ll update as soon as the time slots are confirmed.
Each new extended special was written by Russell T Davies, with music by returning composer Murray Gold, and will be an hour long.

Yasmin Finney may continue to have a significant role in Doctor Who beyond the 60th-anniversary specials and could potentially join the Doctor in the Tardis. The upcoming Doctor Who season 14 will feature both new and familiar faces, including the return of Kate Stewart and Bonnie Langford's characters. Yasmin Finney's return to Doctor Who suggests that her character, Rose, may have important connections to past companions and will play a key role in the show's future.
According to Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies, Yasmin Finney's new companion Rose may have a notable role long after her 60th-anniversary specials debut. Finney will star alongside David Tennant and Catherine Tate in three stories set to air in fall 2023 to celebrate the milestone. Quentin Tarantino's attendance of a Barbie movie screening pays homage to Margot Robbie's Sharon Tate in his own film, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood. Tarantino participated in a "Barbenheimer" double feature, watching Oppenheimer and then buying tickets for Barbie at the same theater Tate attends a movie in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. While Once Upon A Time in Hollywood received strong reviews, some criticized its portrayal of female characters. In Barbie, Robbie takes center stage and delivers a standout performance that adds depth and range to the iconic doll.

Robert Mitchum ca. late 1940s. Robert Mitchum movies 'The Yakuza,' 'Ryan's Daughter' on TCM Today, Aug. 12, '15, Turner Classic Movies' “Summer Under the Stars” series is highlighting the career of Robert Mitchum. Two of the films being shown this evening are The Yakuza and Ryan's Daughter. The former is one of the disappointingly few TCM premieres this month. (See TCM's Robert Mitchum movie schedule further below.) Despite his film noir background, Robert Mitchum was a somewhat unusual choice to star in The Yakuza (1975), a crime thriller set in the Japanese underworld. Ryan's Daughter or no, Mitchum hadn't been a box office draw in quite some time; in the mid-'70s, one would have expected a Warner Bros. release directed by Sydney Pollack – who had recently handled the likes of Jane Fonda, Barbra Streisand, and Robert Redford – to star someone like Jack Nicholson or Al Pacino or Dustin Hoffman.

True Detective
Crime drama is always looking for new ways of dramatising a murder investigation: one killing investigated over 10 episodes; alternating viewpoints of cops, killer, victims and so on. However, in this ambitious series from HBO, multiple seasons will follow the search for a serial killer in Louisiana over 17 years, with each year introducing a new cast. Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey are in the first group. Either magnificent or mad. Mark Lawson HBO.
Penny Dreadful
This has a remarkable lineage: it is produced by film and stage director Sam Mendes and John Logan, who wrote Skyfall for Mendes as well as Hugo, The Aviator and Gladiator. Its disadvantage may be the daring concept, in which a number of fictional horror story characters – Dracula, Frankenstein's monster and Dorian Gray – are living in Victorian London.

Sundance Institute executives announced on December 5 that the festival will feature new work from artist Doug Aitken as well as Klip Collective’s external projections on the Egyptian Theatre.
An expanded New Frontier will showcase installations, performance, transmedia and panel discussion section. Most of the installations will be housed at a new, 5,000-square-foot location at the Gateway in Park City adjacent to Main Street.
Doug Aitken’s The Source (Evolving) will occur at a nearby location along Main Street.

The private investigator has been with us for years, decades really. When I was younger I read as many private eye mysteries as I did science fiction and horror novels and short stories. I read as much of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett and Mickey Spillane as I could find. I also read a lot of the two MacDonald’s, Ross MacDonald’s novels about Lew Archer (one of which made a great movie with Paul Newman as Harper) and John D. MacDonald’s novels about Travis McGee. Although McGee was not strictly speaking a Pi he still functioned as one in MacDonald’s color coded novels like Darker Than Amber (which made a great movie with Rod Taylor).
I used to stay up late to watch classic private eye movies like The Maltese Falcon, Kiss Me Deadly (the best Mike Hammer movie ever, seriously!) Murder My Sweet,...

In the heady days of the early 1970s, artists and socialites toyed with the boundaries that would forever transform our perceptions of gender, identity and creative expression. A new exhibition at the Tate in Liverpool investigates this period, from Andy Warhol's fashion choices to David Bowie's music.
"Glam! The Performance of Style" critically explores European and North American artistic trends from 1971-1975. Artists including Cindy Sherman, Ulay (Frank Uwe Laysiepen), Richard Hamilton and Gilbert & George grapple with glam as a vehicle for exploring irony, androgyny and self-expression.
Each work combines art and artifice with revolutionary results. For instance, Nan Goldin and Peter Hujar capture the delicate femininity of drag queens and transsexuals at their most glamorous and vulnerable, while painters including David Hockney and Richard Hamilton render a pop-centric world weaving art together with fashion and music. In addition, Marc Camille Chaimowicz’s 1972 multimedia installation "Celebration? Realife" combines the holy trinity of lights,...

Beginning on November 30, 2011, interested buyers can place bids of at least $10,000 on Gotta Have Rock and Roll’s official website. Julien’s Auction house, which is in charge of the bidding, is claiming that Polanski removed the ring from Tate’s finger when he identified her body at the morgue. Every movie buff appreciates a cinematic list. The arrival of vast information on a subject we love so dearly will always be welcomed with open arms. And what better than the esteemed list of all-time greatest films? Whether it’s a monumental effort like Empire’s The 500 Greatest Movies of All Time, or the country-specific AFI list of 100 Greatest American Films, there’s no denying the lasting appeal and insight a list can offer to reminiscence about old favourites and to put us on our way for new discoveries. After announcing the 58 films in four categories that would be eligible for awards at Sundance, the film fest has now announced the next 57 movies to be screened this coming January. These 57 films are of course out of competition and will be included in Premieres, Next, Spotlight, New Frontiers and Midnight categories. Most are big name projects from already established filmmakers and some have already made their way around film festival in 2010. The list includes Kevin Smith’s Red State, Tom McCarthy’s Win Win, Morgan Spurlock’s documentary The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, Submarine, I Saw the Devil (which had plenty of buzz at Tiff) and my most anticipated film of 2011, Hobo With a Shotgun.
Here is the full list:

Well, yesterday, we saw the full list of films in-competition; today, we get to see those titles that have been selected for Sundance 2011′s out-of-competition lineup.
And as I said with yesterday’s post, I’ll be going over the complete list, highlighting titles that need to be, taking into consideration this blog’s specific interests. The only title that immediately stands out is Brit John Akomfrah’s The Nine Muses, which MsWOO positively reviewed, after seeing it at the London Film Festival in October. Read her review Here.
But look for future posts profiling any other titles I deem worthy. I’ve applied for press credentials to attend next year’s festival. I won’t know until the 23rd of this month, whether I’ve been granted press access or not. If I am, I will attend the festival; and if I’m not, well, I probably won’t.
