Nickelback have announced a new live album, Nickelback: Live in Nashville, arriving November 15th. The opening track “San Quentin” can be streamed now.
The 18-song set was recorded at a sold-out Bridgestone Arena in Nashville during the band’s 2023 “Get Rollin’ Tour.” Numerous guests took the stage that night, including Chris Daughtry for a rendition of “Savin’ Me.”
Other highlights include a cover of Steve Earle’s “Copperhead Road” with Brantley Gilbert and Josh Ross, “Rockstar” with Bailey Zimmerman, and “Sold Out” with Hardy. Of course, the band touched on their most well-known tracks such as “How You Remind Me” and “Photograph,” as well.
While Nickelback have three official live video DVD releases, the upcoming live album marks only the second official live audio release from the band following the 2021 release of the digital-only Live from Red Rocks. More than half a century after the release of the last MC5 album, 1971’s High Time, a new album masterminded by the group’s guitarist Wayne Kramer, who died in February, will come out this fall. The record, Heavy Lifting, includes two songs that feature original MC5 drummer Dennis “Machine Gun” Thompson, who died in May, alongside guest appearances by Slash, Tom Morello, Living Colour’s Vernon Reid, and Don Was, among others.
The new single, “Can’t Be Found,” begins with a muscular bass line that leads a typically powerful guitar riff.

A new song by legendary Detroit rockers MC5 titled “Can’t Be Found,” featuring Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid, has just been released.
It’s the latest single from Heavy Lifting, the first MC5 album in 53 years. The late Wayne Kramer, the band’s founding guitarist and vocalist, recorded much of the album prior to his passing earlier this year and co-wrote 12 of the 13 songs with Brad Brooks (who performed with MC5 in the years prior to Kramer’s death).
On “Can’t Be Found,” Kramer handled lead vocals and was also joined by classic MC5 drummer Dennis “Machine Gun” Thompson, who sadly passed away earlier this year, as well. Reid’s guitar playing shines beginning at the 1:40 mark, where he delivers a blistering solo.
The LP was produced by Bob Ezrin and also features guest spots from Slash, Tom Morello, Alice in Chains’ William Duvall, and more. It...

MC5 drummer Dennis Thompson, the last surviving original member of the influential group, died Thursday morning at MediLodge of Taylor, where he had been rehabilitating following a heart attack in April. He was 75.
His death comes a little over three months since fellow MC5 cofounder Wayne Kramer died. Other key figures in the band’s history, all deceased, included singer Rob Tyner, guitarist Fred “Sonic” Smith, bassist Michael Davis and guitarist Kramer. The group’s former manager, John Sinclair, died April 2.
The group was just voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year. The induction ceremony will be held in October in Cleveland.
After leaving the MC5, Thompson continued to perform locally with various Detroit bands, and went on to participate in a series of reunion projects with Kramer during the 2000s.
The MC5 formed in 1965. Thompson credited the band’s rise to its blue-collar work ethic and hard work.

As reported by the Detroit Free Press, Thompson passed away at a nursing home in Taylor, Michigan on Wednesday (May 8th), where he had been rehabilitating from a heart attack he suffered in April.
Nicknamed “Machine Gun” due to his fast, hard-hitting style of drumming, Thompson was the last surviving member of MC5, which will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in the Musical Excellence category this fall.
Born in the Detroit area, Thompson picked up the drums when he was just nine years old. While still in high school, he joined a garage band called the Bounty Hunters alongside his friend and future MC5 bandmate Wayne Kramer on guitar.

Wayne Kramer, the cofounder and guitarist-vocalist of the iconic Detroit punk band MC5, has died at age 75. The news was shared on Kramer and MC5’s official social media pages today, but a cause of death was not disclosed.
Born Wayne Kambes on April 30, 1948, the guitarist formed the MC5 (for Motor City 5) as a teenager with his friend, Fred “Sonic” Smith. They played locally, eventually becoming the house band at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit.
John Sinclair, a left-wing activist, became the band’s manager, and they soon were a staple of the late-’60s political movements, aligning with the White Panther Party, the anti-racist group that Sinclair cofounded.
The group’s sound was hard to define, but it was defiant, and was widely credited with sparking what was to come in punk. The group performed at the protests outside the 1968 Democratic National Convention and at other rallies before signing...

Gavin MacLeod, who was the Love Boat captain and played Murray on the Mary Tyler Moore Show, two of the top television shows of the 1970s and 1980s, died today at his home in Palm Desert, Calif. MacLeod was 90 and his death was confirmed by his nephew, Mark See.
No cause of death was revealed, but MacLeod had been in ill health over the last few months.
The affable actor played head writer Murray Slaughter on the Mary Tyler Moore Show and appeared in all 168 episodes over seven years, ending in 1977. He then pulled off a rarity, moving from one long-running hit show to another.
As Captain Stubing on The Love Boat, he appeared in 249 episodes, and later returned in the role for the TV movie The Love Boat: A Valentine Voyage in 1990 and for the “Reunion” episode of the rebooted series Love Boat: The Next Wave in 1998.

Gavin MacLeod, a sitcom veteran who played seaman “Happy” Haines on “McHale’s Navy,” Murray on “Mary Tyler Moore” and the very different, vaguely patrician Captain Stubing on “The Love Boat,” has died. He was 90.
MacLeod’s nephew, Mark See, confirmed his death to Variety. MacLeod died in the early morning on May 29. No cause of death was given, but MacLeod’s health had declined in recent months.
MacLeod played a relatively minor character on ABC hit “McHale’s Navy,” starring Ernest Borgnine, but as newswriter Murray Slaughter, he was certainly one of the stars of “Mary Tyler Moore,” appearing in every one of the classic comedy’s 168 episodes during its 1970-77 run on CBS. Murray was married to Marie (Joyce Bulifant) but was in love with Moore’s Mary Richards. His desk was right next to Mary’s in the Wjm newsroom, so MacLeod was frequently in the shot during the sitcom,...

Blake Edwards. Courtesy of Paramount.“[Blake] Edwards has become a stylistic influence in the cinema,” Andrew Sarris would write of the filmmaker in 1968, “And his personality and script dominate Ralph Nelson’s Soldier in the Rain the way Lubitsch’s personality once dominated Cukor’s One Hour With You.” Sarris would dub himself an “Edwardian”in his support of the film director and the inclusion of Edwards in his foundational book, The American Cinema: Directors and Directions 1929–1968, still remains the most serious scholarship on him. Edwards’ distinction in the book included him in “The Far Side of Paradise,” the category that “falls short of Pantheon,” the highest distinction. Edwards would be categorized alongside the likes of Capra, Cukor, Minnelli, Preminger, and Fuller—strong company, but characterized as such for Sarris because there is fragmentation or disruption within their careers. This high distinction by Sarris would have the great film critic come...

Randy Houser has announced plans to release his new album Magnolia this fall, and with the news comes another song from the singer-songwriter, the thoughtful ballad “No Stone Unturned.”
The 12-track album, which was produced by Keith Gattis and recorded at his studio in East Nashville, derives its title from the nickname of Houser’s home state, Mississippi. Houser, who began his career penning hits like Trace Adkins’ “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk,” co-wrote all the songs on Magnolia, with “No Stone Unturned” following “What Whiskey Does” as the second release from the album.

It came as no surprise in October that Michael Moore’s secret documentary “Michael Moore in Trumpland” was a pro-Hillary Clinton film urging Americans to vote for the democratic presidential nominee on November 8. Moore has been one of the most vocal and politically active filmmakers of his generation, if not the most active, and he felt that too much of the election conversation was dominated by negativity.

Its maturation is impossible to trace given it has been used as both an exercise in arm-thinning and something for ex-smokers to do with their hands, but according to Jezebel (which specialises in red-carpet kinesics) at the Oscars in 2006 around 60% of the actors were doing it, so here we are.

Billy Wilder directed Sunset Blvd. with Gloria Swanson and William Holden. Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett movies Below is a list of movies on which Charles Brackett and Billy Wilder worked together as screenwriters, including efforts for which they did not receive screen credit. The Wilder-Brackett screenwriting partnership lasted from 1938 to 1949. During that time, they shared two Academy Awards for their work on The Lost Weekend (1945) and, with D.M. Marshman Jr., Sunset Blvd. (1950). More detailed information further below. Post-split years Billy Wilder would later join forces with screenwriter I.A.L. Diamond in movies such as the classic comedy Some Like It Hot (1959), the Best Picture Oscar winner The Apartment (1960), and One Two Three (1961), notable as James Cagney's last film (until a brief comeback in Milos Forman's Ragtime two decades later). Although some of these movies were quite well received, Wilder's later efforts – which also included The Seven Year Itch...

While we're used to seeing them working together (on Saturday Night Live or presenting the Golden Globes, for example), it's a long six years since Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's last movie double-act, Baby Mama. High time for Sisters then, the first trailer for which has just arrived online.Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect) directed the film, which, as you'll have just seen, finds siblings Jane and Maura (Fey and Poehler) coming home to discover that their parents (James Brolin and Dianne Wiest) are selling the family home and moving to a small condo. The ladies need to find alternative lodgings now that The Nest (actually the film's former title) is no longer open to them. As a last hurrah at the old homestead, they decide to spend a final weekend there together, throwing a party like they're Andrew Wk. Ike Barinholtz (The Mindy Project, Eastbound And Down) plays amorous neighbour James,...

Update: Hit the break to see an update on this piece! If you’re still reeling from this week’s reminder that there’s still a major gender gap at play in Hollywood, Twitter might have the antidote for your pain. The #HireTheseWomen hashtag has steadily been gaining steam over the past few days, and it’s not only proving that social media can be used for good, but that people really, really want to see more films from women. Even better? There are plenty of women who can make them. Film critic Miriam Bale got the ball rolling earlier this week, as she began tweeting lists of talented women for Hollywood to hire, as inspired by that Women and Hollywood infographic that so simply and wrenchingly detailed the major gap that still exists between male and female directors in Hollywood. The thing has taken on a life of its own, with...

If you’ve finally managed to catch your breath after a couple of notably bloody weeks across some of television’s best shows (hell, someone even got stabbed, twice, on Mad Men last week, and we won’t even comment on Game of Thrones’ Red Wedding in this space), it might be high time to start thinking ahead to what will undoubtedly be a bloody end of summer. High time? Get it? We’re talking about Vince Gilligan‘s Breaking Bad on AMC here. With the second half of the show’s fifth season (season 5.5?) finally hitting the small screen with a Bryan Cranston-directed premiere episode on August 11th, marketing has started to slowly waft out across the internet like so many meth fumes through your friendly neighborhood cook house. Sure, the first look at the show’s newest poster (and a very brief ten-second teaser trailer, which you can check out over at The Wrap...

The trailer for the new Jeff Buckley film, Dan Algrant's "Greetings from Tim Buckley," has finally arrived on YouTube, showing a flannel-clad Penn Badgley belting it out on stage.
The movie, which lands at Tribeca Film Festival this month, centers on the younger Buckley's breakout 1991 performance -- a tribute show to his father and American avant-garde musician, Tim Buckley. The concert is widely viewed as the start of the younger Buckley's stint in show business, a career tragically cut short by his death at the age of 30.
So what do we think of Badgley, the former "Gossip Girl" actor, as the leading man? Well, he has received surprisingly positive reviews since clips of him singing signature Buckley tunes surfaced online last year. Spin went so far as to call the impersonator "decent" while Fuse noted, "Badgley's voice does Jeff Buckley justice, and that's no small feat." He did seem to nail "Once I was,...

Twilight Time has released the 1960 comedy High Time starring Bing Crosby as a limited edition (3,000 units) Blu-ray. Crosby's career as an actor has largely been neglected over the decades despite the fact that he was one of the most enduring boxoffice giants of his time. Perhaps the reason is that, unlike Frank Sinatra, who took on dramatic and challenging roles, Crosby was largely content to stick with playing amiable crooners in glossy, feel-good musicals. One such film is High Time, which was originally developed as a comedy titled Big Daddy for Gary Cooper. However, when Cooper became terminally ill, Crosby's production company picked up the option as a starring vehicle for Crosby himself. Der Bingle plays Harvey Howard, a 51-year-old self-made businessman who owns a national chain of popular smokehouse restaurants. Harvey decides to fulfill his dream of becoming the first family member to obtain a college degree.

With his latest film Savages, the acclaimed Us director turns his vision to the murderous narcotics-fuelled conflict in Mexico
A man steps across the floor of what seems to be a basement or dungeon, on a film shot by a wobbly, handheld camera. Blood, sticky underfoot, runs beneath his boots – and the camera catches what seems to be a severed head. The scene is being played on a computer screen, watched by an intense young man, transfixed. A beautiful girl looks also, over his shoulder. "Is that Iraq?", she asks, squirming at the degenerate and apparently gratuitous cruelty. "Mexico," replies the man with a grunt, clearly terrified himself. Welcome to the latest film by Hollywood's – even America's – heretic-in-chief, Oliver Stone. Unsurprisingly, this brief exchange is charged with greater meaning than it appears at first sight, and the film's director has come to elaborate.

Didn't get an invite to this year's Oscars? Neither did Xan Brooks, but he stoically blogged the red carpet and then the ceremony anyway
10.57pm: And so it begins ....
11.25pm: Roll carpet, roll cameras: it's the 84th annual Academy Awards, live and lurid from Hollywood. The Guardian film team will be covering the event throughout the night, weeping with the winners and wailing with the losers as this season's awards circus clatters exhaustedly towards the finish line. This is where it ends, inside the Hollywood and Highland Centre (reputedly the winner of the 2007 "Ugliest Building in La" award). Inside, the victors shall be encased in gold, the vanquished shown the door and all manner of movies laid tenderly to rest.
But wait, kick back, and keep the war horses tethered: the actual ceremony does not officially commence until 5pm (Pacific time). Time enough to cast an eye back over some late-breaking Oscar news.

Catherine Grant's post-holiday return to blogging and tweeting has reminded me that some of her invaluable pointers to online resources over the past couple of weeks slipped right on past me during the year-end crunch. High time to catch up:
The new World Picture, #6, bears the ominous title "Wrong."
"The Disgust Issue" of Film-Philosophy. In her introduction, guest editor Tina Kendall notes an increasing interdisciplinary "concern with thinking through the relations between bodily sensation, emotion, and cognition (especially as these are mediated by films and other cultural forms), and with probing the political, moral, and ethical implications that arise from those particular conditions of embodiment."
The second issue of Cinema: Journal of Philosophy and the Moving Image.
Stoffel Debuysere has collected and posted hours of video from Goodbye Cinema, Hello Cinephilia, an event that took place in October in Brussels. The talks and discussions are led by Adrian Martin,...

High time to round up the films at this year's Cannes Film Festival that never saw entries of their own and send them on their way. Today: Un Certain Regard.
"Bakur Bakuradze's The Hunter seems like a ficticious version of Raymond Depardon's Modern Life, a trilogy on farming that was screened in Cannes in 2008," finds Moritz Pfeifer, who also interviews the director for the East European Film Bulletin. "With no soundtrack, no professional actors, little dialogue and a minimalist plot, the film depicts the daily life of Ivan (Mikhail Barskovich) as he peacefully runs his pig farm in one of the less populous areas of northwestern Russia…. Clearly, Bakuradze wants to depict an alternative world, and the spirit of his film is more utopian than its hyper-realistic images suggest."
Grumbles the Hollywood Reporter's Kirk Honeycutt: "There is maybe 10 to 15 minutes of actual story located within this 124 minute slog,...

The film-maker Blake Edwards, who has died aged 88, will be best remembered as the creator of the Pink Panther films, and as the husband of the entertainer Julie Andrews. But Edwards was a third-generation show-business figure whose complex and controversial career spanned more than 50 years, initially as an actor and writer and subsequently as one of America's most prolific producer-directors, primarily concerned with the popular genres of comedy and musicals and with creating television series.
Despite working in mainstream cinema, his maverick spirit and ego made him an uneasy partner with Hollywood studios. He famously savaged the hand that had fed him so well with S.O.B. (1981), a raucous, vitriolic attack on Tinseltown. His sophisticated work drew strongly on his love of early cinema (his stepgrandfather had directed silent films), and on his own life and psychological problems (he...
