Michael C. Hall’s crime drama, Dexter, has extended into a full-fledged franchise with several spin-offs, with Original Sin being the most recent. Both the original series and its spin-off have several unsettling moments. However, in addition to the graphic details, what left many uncomfortable was the controversial storyline involving the titular antihero and his adoptive sister, Debra Morgan.

The showrunners have revealed that it was something that they had considered since the early seasons. And while the original series ultimately abandoned it following a massive backlash, the prequel spin-off, Original Sin, has an opportunity to finally address the controversial storyline in a more organic way.

From serial killer profilers to morally gray antiheroes, these crime thrillers will fill the ‘Dexter: Original Sin’-shaped hole in your watchlist.
The “Dexter” franchise has some serious staying power. What started as a one-of-a-kind crime thriller about a blood-spatter analyst named “Dexter” with a dark secret went on to rack up eight seasons and spawn three connected series: the sequel “Dexter: New Blood,” the prequel “Dexter: Original Sin,” and the upcoming sequel (yes… another sequel) “Dexter: Resurrection.” More than a decade later, audiences still can’t get enough of Dexter Morgan - whether he’s learning to follow his father’s code or trying (and failing) to leave his past behind.
Set years before the events of “Dexter,” “Dexter: Original Sin” goes back to the beginning, following a young Dexter as he learns to balance his need to kill with his father’s strict moral guidelines. It brings everything...

Since the Golden Age of Hollywood, gangsters have dominated the crime genre, with films like The Untouchables and Scarface exploring the lives of notorious mob bosses and drug kingpins. For some, these films represent the pinnacle of genres like thriller, crime, and drama, typically thanks to the great alignment of cast, writer, and director. Despite their violent nature, these films appeal to people of all stripes, often reinventing cinema altogether through their success.
Gangster movies vary in scale, with modern classics like Sexy Beast and A History of Violence making great use of relatively small casts. Other movies have reeled in audiences through their assembly of some of the biggest and most talented stars of their era, often turning in career-best performances. Through these movies, fans have been shown the inner workings of some of America's most dangerous criminal organizations -- even if they play fast and loose with the facts.

For eight seasons and 96 episodes, from 2006 to 2013, the series Dexter ran on Showtime, telling the story of Dexter Morgan, a blood spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department who is also a vigilante serial killer. Clyde Phillips was showrunner on Dexter for the first four seasons, and in 2021 he and Showtime brought us the revival series Dexter: New Blood… which, for a time, also seemed to be the end of it all. But that’s not the case. Showtime has tasked Phillips with continue to build up the Dexter franchise, with the prequel series Dexter: Original Sin premiering last month and a New Blood follow-up called Dexter: Resurrection heading for a June premiere. Filming on Dexter: Resurrection is now underway, and Michael C. Hall, who played Dexter Morgan in the original series and Dexter: New Blood, and also provides the in-character narration for Dexter: Original Sin, is back...

Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Dexter: Original Sin season 1, episode 6.Levi Reed (Jeff Daniel Phillips) tried to convince Dexter Morgan (Patrick Gibson) that they were the same in Dexter: Original Sin, but there's another serial killer who is much more similar to Dexter. There have been plenty of serial killers in Dexter history who drew parallels between themselves and Dexter, and Original Sin just added another to the list. At the end of Original Sin episode 6, Levi Reed tried to convince Dexter that they were the same, and he actually had a point. What Reed didn't realize, however, is that Dexter is much more similar to a different character in Original Sin.
While he was on Dexter's kill table, Levi Reed said that they both love the act of killing, but Dexter asserted that they were different because he only targeted people who deserved to die, not innocent people and children.

It’s difficult to exaggerate the size of Baldur’s Gate 3. Due to its exceptional Divinity: Original Sin games, Larian was already a reputable firm; it became RPG royalty, a huge sales smash, and the recipient of all the accolades. However, that wasn’t the whole plan from the very beginning.

Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Dexter: Original Sin season 1, episode 6.The second half of Dexter: Original Sin season 1 got off to a quick start, and there were quite a few developments in the newest episode. Dexter has always been about murder and serial killers, but Original Sin episode 6 stepped it up a notch. From Dexter (Patrick Gibson) identifying a new serial killer to Jimmy Powell's killer taking a new victim and Dexter murdering his third victim, Original Sin was jam-packed with bloodshed. There was even a cliffhanger ending involving the severed arm of one of Dexter's previous victims.

Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Dexter: Original Sin season 1, episode 5 and Thanksgiving (2023).A dark theory about the mystery killer in Dexter: Original Sin seems very plausible after a 2023 horror movie starring the possible murderer. The mystery of who killed Jimmy Powell in Dexter: Original Sin is shaping up to be the show's biggest twist. There are only a handful of new characters in the cast of Dexter: Original Sin, which means there are only a few potential killers so far. Since characters like Angel Batista (James Martinez) and Maria Laguerta (Christina Milian) are still around in the original Dexter, there's no way they could have killed Jimmy Powell.
Most of Dexter's serial killers also have some kind of personal connection to Dexter Morgan (Patrick Gibson), so it seems likely that Jimmy's killer is already in the show. Even though there aren't many possibilities for who could have killed Jimmy,...

Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Dexter: Original Sin episode 4 and Dexter season 1.Dexter: Original Sin has provided a lot more context about Harry Morgan's (Christian Slater) decision to adopt Dexter after Laura Moser's (Brittany Allen) death, but it hasn't explained why he didn't adopt Brian Moser as well. As a prequel, the timeline of Original Sin and Harry's flashbacks overlaps with some of Dexter's backstory in the original show. That means Original Sin gets to dive deeper into Dexter's origins as a serial killer and his early childhood when Laura was still alive. While the show has answered many questions about Dexter, it also raised a few new ones.
Fans of the original Dexter already know that Laura Moser was killed by Hector Estrada, a drug kingpin, and that Dexter and Brian were locked in a shipping container filled with her corpse and blood for days.

Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Dexter: Original Sin season 1, episode 4!As young Dexter finally begins to implement the Code of Harry, Dexter: Original Sin revives a major aspect of the main series that was largely absent from New Blood. Though Dexter’s original series ended in 2013, the show has received a massive resurgence in popularity throughout the 2020s, leading to a limited revival in 2021, a prequel in 2024, a sequel slated for a 2025 release, and another prequel in development about Dexter’s Trinity Killer. While each new show sees notable departures from Dexter’s original formula, some, like Original Sin, are more intent on recapturing the main series’ successful recipe.
Though Dexter: New Blood and Original Sin generally had similar starting points, as Dexter killed for the first time in a decade in New Blood while killing for the first time ever in Original Sin, they took different approaches to episodic storytelling.

Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Dexter: Original Sin episode 3 and Dexter: New Blood. Now that Dexter: Original Sin is underway, it will soon have to address one of the biggest plot holes from the sequel series Dexter: New Blood. As a prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin has had a chance to revisit some of the original series and New Blood's greatest hits. Already, it proved that Dexter survived the ending of New Blood, and it added a new twist to Dexter's first victim, Nurse Mary. As the show continues, it will have even more chances to rewrite the beginning of Dexter Morgan's story, and it will also have a chance to rewrite a controversial part of New Blood's story.

Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Dexter: Original Sin season 1, episode 3!Though there are plenty of familiar faces in Dexter: Original Sin, one notable missing original character is James Doakes. The timeline of Dexter: Original Sin brings the titular killer’s story back to 1991, highlighting his early days of killing and the beginning of his career at Miami Metro. While working at Miami Metro, young Dexter works alongside some returning original characters, like his adoptive father Harry Morgan, Detective Angel Batista, Vince Masuka, Maria Laguerta, and Camilla Figg.
However, some major staples from the main show are still missing from Dexter: Original Sin’s cast. The Dexter universe is growing larger by the second. Dexter: Original Sin is currently telling the origins of the young serial killer, but another prequel series could soon follow. Deadline reports that a prequel series revolving around the Trinity Killer (played by John Lithgow in the original series) is still “in development” at Paramount+.
The Trinity Killer prequel series was actually reported to be in condition in early 2023, but it’s been a long time since we’ve heard anything about it. Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips and Dexter writer/producer Scott Reynolds will serve as co-creators and executive producers of the Trinity Killer prequel series. Phillips even revealed that John Lithgow has agreed to come back and provide the inner voice of his younger self, much in the same way Michael C. Hall is doing for Dexter: Original Sin.

Exclusive: The Dexter Trinity Killer prequel series, following the makings of the notorious serial killer played by John Lithgow in the mothership series, remains “in development” at Paramount+ with Showtime and has come a long way since it was originally announced in early 2023 as being in the exploration stages, sources close to production tell Deadline.
Original Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips and fellow Dexter veteran Scott Reynolds serve as co-creators and executive producers of the Trinity Killer spinoff prequel, we hear. They held a development room for the project earlier this spring. As scripts were being written, there were erroneous media reports that the project was not moving forward which was never the case, sources said.

Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Dexter: Original Sin season 1, episode 2!In Dexter: Original Sin season 1, episode 2, a fan-favorite character from the original series returns, but her appearance also provides a sad reminder of her tragic fate that’s tied to Dexter. There are several major original Dexter characters who return in Original Sin as younger versions of themselves, but, sadly, not all of them made it out of the main series alive. For instance, while Harry Morgan, Maria Laguerta, Debra Morgan, and Camilla Figg are once again familiar faces in Original Sin, they all ultimately die by Dexter season 8's ending.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Dexter: Original Sin episodes 2 & 3.
Following an overstuffed premiere episode, Dexter: Original Sin episodes 2 and 3, "Kid in a Candy Store" and "Miami Vice", have found a nostalgic flow on par with the original series. While Dexter: Original Sin episode 1 "And in the Beginning..." covered several expected narrative beats from Dexter season 1, it failed to effectively establish a natural balance between its old characters and new faces.
With the double-episode drop of Dexter: Original Sin, the prequel series not only honors its classic predecessor but provides tangible hints that it could actually fill in the large shoes left by the Michael C. Hall-led classic.
Dexter: Original Sin explores the origins of Dexter Morgan as he transitions from student to serial killer in 1991 Miami. Guided by his father, Dexter channels his dark urges through a moral code while starting a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.

Dexter: Original Sin seems like it’s off to a killer start.
The series premiere racked up 2.1M global viewers across Paramount+ and Showtime in the first three days of availability, according to Paramount Global.
The company also says it Showtime’s most-streamed premiere ever, although it didn’t specify how much of that audience came from streaming.
Dexter: Original Sin debuted on Friday, December 13 with one episode on Paramount+ before its cable premiere on Sunday evening. Episode rollout will continue that way with two new episodes streaming this Friday. This data encompasses viewership from Friday through Sunday.
Paramount certainly seems happy with this number, which is really all that matters, but it’s difficult to say whether this is an outright win, as the company shares data pretty sparingly.
It certainly seems promising for Showtime, specifically. Consider that the Season 2 premiere of Yellowjackets, which had the same streaming-to-linear rollout strategy,...

The latest entry in the Dexter franchise, Dexter: Original Sin , arrives on Friday, Dec. 13 via Paramount+ with Showtime, and premieres on Showtime proper this Sunday, December 15. However, early critiques of the show suggest it's dead on arrival despite a "stellar" cast including Patrick Gibson (Dexter Morgan) and Christian Slater.
The Original Dexter series — about a moralistic serial killer played by Michael C. Hall — was Showtime’s biggest hit, running for eight seasons from 2006 to 2013. But, as is often the case with popular shows, the finale fell flat. Ending a beloved series is difficult. In 2021, Dexter: New Blood gave fans, as reviewer David Opie wrote in Radio Times, “the ending Dexter always deserved.” That was that Dexter — who learned his killing “code” from his adopted father Harry — is killed by his own son. One of Opie’s main beefs with Dexter: Original Sin is the waffling from showrunner Clyde Phillips.

Showtime has tasked Phillips with continue to build up the Dexter franchise, with the prequel series Dexter: Original Sin premiering on the Paramount+ streaming service as of today, December 13th (the Showtime premiere will follow on December 15th.) We’re also getting a New Blood follow-up called Dexter: Resurrection – and Phillips has revealed to DiscussingFilm that we’ll only have a six month wait between Dexter: Original Sin and Dexter: Resurrection!

Dexter: Resurrection is expected to begin filming in January 2025, one month after the premiere of the upcoming prequel series Dexter: Original Sin. It's more than likely that showrunner Clyde Phillips has already worked out a proper method for convincingly carrying on the torch of Dexter, even after the titular protagonist was already confirmed to be dead at the end of Dexter: New Blood.

"Dexter: Original Sin" will continue the disturbing intro trend of the franchise like its predecessors. Screen Rant learned that the intro to "Dexter: Original Sin" highlights the gross and gruesome moments in Dexter's morning routine and highlight his dark nature. The intros in "Dexter" and "New Blood" were often more disturbing than the actual death scenes in the series.
The upcoming Dexter prequel show, Dexter: Original Sin, will continue to use one disturbing detail of both the original series and Dexter: New Blood. Though Dexter met his final fate at the end of Dexter: New Blood, the titular serial killer is set to return in the near future. Two series are currently planned, both a sequel series starring Michael C. Hall and the prequel series, Original Sin, starring Patrick Gibson. Not much is currently known about the sequel series, but the details that have been shared about Original Sin...

Michael C. Hall is returning as Dexter Morgan for both a prequel show and a new sequel series. Hall's portrayal of Dexter has been iconic, making him the heart of the franchise. The return of Hall as Dexter's voice in the prequel show and possible appearance in the sequel will bridge the gap between the two series.
Michael C. Hall has not finished playing Dexter Morgan, with his return now confirmed for both the Dexter: Original Sin prequel show and a new sequel series. Originally assuming the role of the Miami-based vigilante serial killer in 2006, Halls tenure as the titular character would earn him a swathe of award nominations and even a Golden Globe win for Best Actor Television Series Drama in 2010. Most recently, Hall has been involved as an executive producer on Dexter: Original Sin, which is set to star Patrick Gibson as a younger version of his character.
