The Dexter universe is growing larger by the second. Dexter: Original Sin is currently telling the origins of the young serial killer, but another prequel series could soon follow. Deadline reports that a prequel series revolving around the Trinity Killer (played by John Lithgow in the original series) is still “in development” at Paramount+.

The Trinity Killer prequel series was actually reported to be in condition in early 2023, but it’s been a long time since we’ve heard anything about it. Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips and Dexter writer/producer Scott Reynolds will serve as co-creators and executive producers of the Trinity Killer prequel series. Phillips even revealed that John Lithgow has agreed to come back and provide the inner voice of his younger self, much in the same way Michael C. Hall is doing for Dexter: Original Sin.

Following an overstuffed premiere episode, Dexter: Original Sin episodes 2 and 3, "Kid in a Candy Store" and "Miami Vice", have found a nostalgic flow on par with the original series. While Dexter: Original Sin episode 1 "And in the Beginning..." covered several expected narrative beats from Dexter season 1, it failed to effectively establish a natural balance between its old characters and new faces.

With the double-episode drop of Dexter: Original Sin, the prequel series not only honors its classic predecessor but provides tangible hints that it could actually fill in the large shoes left by the Michael C. Hall-led classic.

Dexter: Original Sin explores the origins of Dexter Morgan as he transitions from student to serial killer in 1991 Miami. Guided by his father, Dexter channels his dark urges through a moral code while starting a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.

The series premiere racked up 2.1M global viewers across Paramount+ and Showtime in the first three days of availability, according to Paramount Global.

The company also says it Showtime’s most-streamed premiere ever, although it didn’t specify how much of that audience came from streaming.

Dexter: Original Sin debuted on Friday, December 13 with one episode on Paramount+ before its cable premiere on Sunday evening. Episode rollout will continue that way with two new episodes streaming this Friday. This data encompasses viewership from Friday through Sunday.

Paramount certainly seems happy with this number, which is really all that matters, but it’s difficult to say whether this is an outright win, as the company shares data pretty sparingly.
