A little-known subgenre that needs more love is occult biker movies. With only a few filmic entries, it’s pretty easy to familiarize oneself with this niche. The culture's fascination with bikers was at an all-time peak during the late '60s and '70s. Don Sharp’s 1973 Psychomania, or The Death Wheelers as it was so aptly retitled in the United States, is a pillar of this subgenre. Watching Psychomania today is unlikely to illicit any real scares, but it remains a groovy horror-adjacent watch. Psychomania is a movie seemingly obsessed with exploring all the avenues out of square society and to uninhibited freedom. Whether that avenue is one of witchcraft, with thinly veiled devil worship, seances, and surrealist editing, or the anarchy-laden rocker vibes of a biker gang, Psychomania sets out to see if the liberation brought by these unconventional lifestyles is worth it.

In a sad blow, the Melbourne International Film Festival (Miff) has announced it will cancel its in-cinema screenings given the current Covid situation in the city.
The festival, always designed as a hybrid event, will continue nationally on Miff Play, with the festival securing an additional 30 titles for the platform. These include some direct-from-Cannes titles such as The Hill Where Lionesses Roar, La Civil, Rehana Maryam Noor and Babi Yar, and Australian films Ablaze, Chef Antonio’s Recipes for Revolution, Little Tornadoes and Paper City.
However, some of the festival most anticipated films, including local films such as Leah Purcell’s The Drover’s Wife The Legend of Molly Johnson, intended as the Opening Night Gala, and Justin Kurzel’s Nitram are not available on the service.
As regional Victoria is no longer in lockdown, the festival’s regional season will proceed, with required changes to the line-up to be advised through local operators.

After watching Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror you certainly can’t accuse writer/director Kier-La Janisse (Eurocrime! the Italian Cop and Gangster Films That Ruled the ’70s) of just skimming the topic’s surface. Book-ended by animated credits sequences and featuring paper collages by Guy Maddin Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched is a deep dive into the definition and history of folk horror. The film’s three hours and fifteen minutes are split into six chapters that make up three roughly hour-long segments.
The first segment deals with the “Unholy Trinity” of Witchfinder General, The Blood on Satan’s Claw and The Wicker Man. While it doesn’t deny their influence and importance, Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched very quickly dispenses with the idea that they are the root of the genre,...

Everything I knew about British culture as a kid I learned from TV. Canada has always been inundated with programming from our Commonwealth pal; Monty Python, Benny Hill, The Two Ronnies, et al paraded before my eyes but nary a horror. And then I discovered the Amicus and Hammer films; worlds unto themselves for exploration. While I’m still knee deep in cleavage and cobwebs, I’m compelled to check out the indie scene; and I happened to come across Psychomania (1973): a well known to some, unknown to many, and now beloved by me Occult Biker film that is absurd as it is entertaining.
Absurdity really is the prominent compound in this heady mash of free spirits and (un)deader ones; the mix of motorcycle mayhem with splashes of Satan works better than it should. That’s probably (at least partly) because the lower budget makes for lower stakes...

Dancing With the Stars has made a lot of changes for its latest season — but the two hours of corporate synergy known as Disney Night? That’s here to stay.
Per tradition, Monday’s episode of the ABC series found couples dancing to beloved Disney songs, complete with themed costumes, cameos from animated characters and, naturally, plenty of plugs for Disney’s latest offerings. (Pixar’s Soul is coming to theaters Nov. 20, in case you hadn’t heard!) (Ah, movies getting released on schedule, in an actual theater. Remember that?)

Splash Mountain, one of the mainstay rides at Disneyland whose theme was based on the Uncle Remus Br’er Rabbit story from Disney’s controversial 1946 film Song of the South, will be reimagined based on the animated film The Princess and the Frog.
The news comes amid growing calls to change the ride’s theme in the wake of George Floyd’s death and the protests that followed calling for racial justice and social change that have dominated the national conversation.
Disney said Thursday that the conversion has been in the works for the flume ride at both the Disneyland in Anaheim and the Magic Kingdom park in Orlando. The new incarnation picks up the story of the 2009 movie after the final kiss, following Princess Tiana (played by Anika Noni Rose) and Louis as they prepare for their first Mardi Gras performance. Congratulations are in order. The Masked Singer just closed out season three by unmasking its final three and declaring a winner, and while there were no big surprises among the final three, that doesn't make it any less delightful to find out who they were. First, the Frog landed in third place. We've been saying it was Bow Wow since the beginning, and so we were absolutely thrilled to see that it was, in fact, the rapper Bow Wow, who said his daughter will be excited to find out that her dad was on the show, but not that excited. Burruss beat out two more celebrities unmasked on Wednesday night’s finale episode: Second place went to singer and actor Jesse McCartney, who had been costumed as the Turtle, while third place was hip-hop star Bow Wow, revealed as the star behind the Frog. “The Masked Singer” has only been around for three seasons, but already an unfortunate pattern is emerging: women are being shut out of the top positions. So far we’ve had two male winners in T-Pain (Season 1’s Monster) and Wayne Brady (Season 2’s Fox), as well as two male runners-up in Donny Osmond (Season 1’s Peacock) and Chris Daughtry (Season 2’s Rottweiler). The Kitty is just one of two women still in the running on season 3 of “The Masked Singer.” She and the rest of the contenders compete on “A Quarter Mask Crisis: The Quarter Finals,” which airs on May 6. The Kitty is sitting pretty after her performance last week of “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” by Marilyn Monroe. That over-the-top number had the four judges singing her praises.
That was a welcome change for the Kitty from the previous week when she ended up fighting for survival in the smackdown against the Banana. She won with her soaring vocals on “Unstoppable” by Sia. That song was more suited to her voice than the one that put her at risk of elimination: “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper.
The Kitty is one of the strongest singers on the show. She shone in her first outing with her version of “Dangerous Woman” by Ariana Grande.

The Night Angel is one of the strongest contenders still in the hunt to win season 3 of “The Masked Singer.” She numbers among the final six who take to the stage on the April 29 episode. The Night Angel secured her slot with her dazzling performance of the Shania Twain signature song “Man! I Feel Like A Woman” on April 8. She is one of the clear favorites of the four judges and has never been in the bottom two.
We’ve been trying to figure out who is hiding inside the Night Angel costume. To do so, we watched all of her performances including: “Rise Up” by Andra Day; “Shout!” by the Isley Brothers; “Million Reasons” by Lady Gaga; and “You Give Love a Bad Name” by Bon Jovi. And we’ve reviewed all her clues videos.
Keep reading as we’ve got all “The Masked Singer” spoilers, including the real name of the Night Angel.

The Kitty is the lone woman competing on quarterfinal 2 of “The Masked Singer” on April 22. She is vying against the Banana, Frog and Rhino for one of the three remaining slots in the competition for the Golden Mask. She landed her spot in this round with her jaw-dropping vocals on Celine Dion power ballad “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now” on the April 1 show.
It wasn’t a surprise that the Kitty chose this as one of her two encore performances on the special sing-along episode of “The Masked Singer on April 15. For the other, she went back to her debut on the show and her cover of “Dangerous Woman” by Ariana Grande. She earned a standing ovation from the studio audience and four judges for that performance and went on to impress with her versions of “Mercy” by Brett Young, and “Mama’s Broken Heart” by Miranda Lambert.

The Turtle sailed through the first quarterfinal of “The Masked Singer” on April 8. He will compete again in the semifinal on April 29. If you can’t wait till then, you can watch a reprise of one of his past performances on the sing-along episode of “The Masked Singer” on April 15. We are promised more clues as to his identity then too but we think we’ve cracked that already.
The Turtle is tops when it comes to vocals among the seven remaining contestants on “The Masked Singer.”
He nailed his cover of “Let It Go” by James Bay on quarterfinal 1. That wasn’t a surprise given how well he’d done in his previous appearances when he scored with his renditions of Seal‘s “Kiss From a Rose,” James Arthur‘s “Say You Won’t Let Go” and Shawn Mendes‘ “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back.”

The Night Angel won her spot on “The Masked Singer” semi-final with her rousing rendition of “Man! I Feel Like A Woman” by Shania Twain on the April 8 quarterfinal. She is showcased on the special sing-along episode on April 15 along with the first other two semi-finalists, the Astronaut and Turtle. Also expect to see the remaining four quarter-finalists — the Banana, Frog, Kitty and Rhino — in reprisals of one of their past performances.
Of these seven stars still standing, the Night Angel has one of the best voices according to the votes of the studio audiences. She has never been at risk of elimination by four judges.

The last time we saw the Kitty on “The Masked Singer” was when she discovered she was the last woman standing in Group B back on March 4. She, along with the two remaining men in Group B, Banana and Frog, returned to compete on the April 1 episode of “The Masked Singer.” They faced off against the top trio from each of Groups A and C.
This Super 9 is hoping to convince the studio audience and four judges that they deserve a spot in the quarter-finals. Unlike some of the competition, the Kitty could never be accused of caterwauling.
Indeed, she sounds just purr-fect to us. In her first appearance, she scored with her cover of “Dangerous Woman” by Ariana Grande. Then she made the country hit “Mercy” by Brett Young her own. Sticking with that genre, she then nailed “Mama’s Broken Heart” by Miranda Lambert.

The Kangaroo last appeared on “The Masked Singer” way back on February 12. Back then she made the Top 3 in Group A. On the April 1 episode, she and the other two remaining contestants from Group A joined the trio of talent from each of Group B and Group C. They took to the stage as the Super 9.
Of these nine contenders for the Golden Mask, the Kangaroo has one of the strongest voices. She has impressed the four judges with each of her performances: a lively version of Robyn‘s dance hit “Dancing On My Own”; the Amy Winehouse classic “You Know I’m No Good”; and Rihanna‘s chart-topping “Diamonds.”

The third season of “The Masked Singer” introduced a new twist of separating its 18 contestants into three groups of six. Initially the groups performed for the audience and judges, with three being eliminated from each. Group A booted the likes of Lil Wayne (Robot), Drew Carey (Llama) and Chaka Khan (Miss Monster). Group B said goodbye to Tony Hawk (Elephant), Dionne Warwick (Mouse) and Tom Bergeron (Taco). Group C has so far eliminated Sarah Palin (Bear), with two more to follow.
At the end of the group rounds, only nine costumed celebs will still remain in the competition to fight it out for the Golden Mask. Get a closer look at the Super 9 contestants of “The Masked Singer” Season 3 in our photo gallery above.

Group B will be down to the final three contenders after the March 4 episode of “The Masked Singer.” Of the four celebrities contending for the Group B championship, our money is on the man in the Taco costume. He first rocked the house with his swinging version of the Frank Sinatra standard “Fly Me To the Moon” on the February 19 episode. He returned last week with another catchy cover of a classic, “Bossa Nova Baby” by Elvis Presley.
We’ve watched those two performances repeatedly as well as the clues videos for the Taco. Keep reading as we’ve got “The Masked Singer” spoilers for all of the remaining Group B contestants, including our best guess as to the real identity of the Taco.

Universal Pictures released the Candyman trailer earlier today, a "spiritual sequel" to the original 1992 horror classic. It is produced by Jordan Peele and directed by up-and-comer Nia DaCosta (Little Woods). DaCosta has shed some light on her new entry in the franchise. Expect to see lots of gore, and at least some Tony Todd.
Nia DaCosta and Jordan Peele appeared at a press event ahead of the Candyman trailer drop. Peele, who produces and co-wrote the movie, doesn't have the bloodiest sensibilities as a director. DaCosta, on the other hand, declared that she loves gore and isn't going to be shy about showing those things to the audience. Here's what she had to say about it.
"I really love gore. Jordan's really brilliant at not showing everything, and my instinct is to do the exact opposite. But there's... a good amount of things you don't want to see, that I make you look at.

Part of the appeal of “The Masked Singer” is trying to figure out which famous faces are hidden beneath those masks. We nailed the identities of the three contestants from Group A who’ve been sent packing: Robot (Lil Wayne), Llama (Drew Carey) and Miss Monster (Chaka Khan). But we were wrong with our guess about the first fellow from Group B who was cut: Elephant (Tony Hawk). The rest of the contenders in Group B returned to compete again on February 26 disguised as the Banana, Frog, Kitty, Mouse and Taco.
Of these famous five folks, we are most certain about who is hiding inside the Kitty costume. Last week, she rocked the house with her cover of the Ariana Grande hit song “Dangerous Woman.” We’ve watched that performance and her clues video over and over and think we’ve nailed her name. Group B kicked off the fourth episode of Fox’s “The Masked Singer,” along with judges Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy, Ken Jeong and Nicole Scherzinger, and of course host Nick Cannon. First up was The Frog rapping and dancing to Mc Hammer’s “Can’t Touch This.” As the zoot-suited backup dancers killed themselves behind this frog, he pranced back and forth, he was very energetic and he had that Michael Jackson crotch-grabby thing down. But who was he?

Psychomania tells of a group of n’er-do-well teens, led by a rich and mean-spirited young man, who skip school, ride motorcycles, and cause trouble and general panic wherever they go. They dub themselves The Living Dead and enjoy causing death and chaos at nearly every turn. However, if things seem bad in the little English village in which they reside, they take a decided turn for the worse when Tom Latham (Nicky Henson) discovers his psychic mother and the mysterious butler Shadwell (George Sanders) harbor a shocking secret—the key to life after death.
It seems that Mrs. Latham (Beryl Reid) and her husband made a long-ago deal with the devil for immortality. The couple committed suicide only to come back from the dead. Unfortunately, the late Mr. Latham found out he wasn’t a true believer and never made it back across. But Mrs.

Fancy some horror? We've been taking a look at the discs of Ghoulies, The Burning, Psychomania and more...
“Have you ever heard a frog scream?”, the tag-line to George McCowan’s 1972 ecological horror Frogs (out now on Arrow Blu-ray) should have read. The Death Wheelers are coming to the UK! Well, they are coming to Blu-ray / DVD in the UK, anyway. Don Sharp’s PsychoMania aka The Death Wheelers (1973) follows Tom, a motorcycle gang leader, who kills himself and is successfully resurrected from the dead by his mother and a very knowledgeable cult. Psychomania will be released via the British Film Institute (BFI) on Blu-ray / DVD in the UK on September 19th:
From Blu-ray.com: “Look Out! The Living Dead motorcycle gang is on the rampage, wreaking havoc in their small English town. For gang leader Tom (Nicky Henson), however, mere earthly violence is not enough: he’s obsessed with the occult and is convinced that he can kill himself and then return from the dead – with the help of a frog-worshipping cult and his seance-conducting mother (Beryl Reid). Remarkably, Tom succeeds and soon joins the ranks of the walking – and riding – dead!

He was born in Australia, but worked mostly in England. Don Sharp directed several Hammer Horror films including Kiss Of The Vampire, one of the best and most unusual. Sharp directed Christopher Lee in six films including Rasputin The Mad Monk and two .60s Fu Manchu movies. His bizarre biker/zombie hybrid Psychomania was way ahead of its time and with Curse Of The Fly he showed himself to be a master of making the best with low-budget conditions of work, hiding his monsters in the shadows and employing atmosphere and music to create effective horror. Sharp also worked on British television, directing several episodes from The Avengers. Don Sharp died Sunday December 18th at age 89.

Director of eerily atmospheric Hammer horror films including The Kiss of the Vampire
In 1962, Don Sharp was a minor ex-actor, hack writer and jobbing director of British B-films, when he was offered the chance to make a gothic horror movie for Hammer, "the studio that dripped blood". In the event, The Kiss of the Vampire (1963) rescued both Sharp, who has died aged 90, and Hammer from the doldrums.
The studio, which had suffered several expensive flops, turned to Sharp due to his experience in low-budget film-making. Sharp, who claimed to have never watched a horror movie, let alone directed one, quickly steeped himself in the Hammer style by spending a week or so watching past successes, principally those directed by Terence Fisher and Freddie Francis. The Kiss of the Vampire, made with a smaller budget and an unstarry cast, recruited mostly from television, scored at the box office, and Sharp became associated with horror movies thereafter.
