Winning an Emmy doesn’t just depend on talent, it also depends on strategy. Actors only get to submit a single episode to represent their entire performance, meaning one incredible moment might win it all, while a consistently brilliant performance gets overlooked.
Ty Burrell as Phil Dunphy in Modern Family and Andre Braugher as Captain Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Both are legendary in their own right, Burrell’s lovable goofball dad, while Braugher’s deadpan delivery couldn’t be polar opposite from each other, and thus pitting them against each other sounds criminal, but that is what happened in the year 2014.
Ty Burrell in Modern Family | Credits: ABC
Burrell took home the Emmy, and sure, he was fantastic. But Braugher’s performance had layers, depth, and comedic precision that arguably outshone the competition. So, was the award well-earned, or did the system fail one of TV’s best? Let’s discuss!

When it comes to a show like Elsbeth, audiences have come to love the unexpected plots and unique characters that keep the series fresh and interesting.
So, it didn’t come as much of a surprise when Michael Emerson made quite the splash on the show. The actor is no stranger to a television set and certainly knows how to embody every character he takes on.
Still, this TV Fanatic can’t help but notice that the man seems to thrive in roles of the more antagonist nature, with Elsbeth being his most recent villainous venture.
(Michael Parmelee/CBS)
It’s unlikely the character will see much of a redemption arc, what with being a murderer and all, but you never know when the main character will be portrayed by your real-life wife.
It’s proof that even in the most extreme cases (and the most entertaining), Michael Emerson always plays a perfect villain.

The Bone Temple will seemingly play a pivotal role in 28 Years Later, but there are as many questions and mysteries surrounding this creepy tourist attraction as there are skulls in the pile. With renowned movie director Danny Boyle back behind the camera, it comes as no surprise that 28 Years Later contains emotive and powerful visuals, but by far the standout shot from 28 Years Later's first trailer is the Bone Temple. Standing freely in a British field, the arrangement comprises a central skull pyre surrounded by numerous towers made of assorted human bones.
28 Years Later's Bone Temple is, to say the least, unsettling, and its prominence in the sequel's marketing points toward it holding a deeper significance for Alex Garland's new story - potentially even extending into the next two movies of 28 Years Later's planned trilogy. Much about the Bone Temple remains unknown, but the few details revealed thus...

The newly released poster for 28 Years Later is drumming up excitement for Danny Boyle’s zombie reboot, but the poster’s imagery is already setting up its own upcoming sequel. The long-awaited sequel to 28 Weeks Later, 28 Years Later will be the first installment of a planned trilogy. It’s set to be released in theaters on June 20, 2025, and it’s based on a script by Boyle and original writer Alex Garland. This past weekend, Sony revealed an unsettling poster for 28 Years Later, along with a cryptic teaser trailer.
Although it only lasts for a few seconds, the 28 Years Later teaser includes a few tantalizing clues about the highly anticipated sequel. The teaser suggests an isolated setting for the sequel and its soundtrack includes Morse code for the word “Tuesday,” suggesting that’s when a full trailer will be released. The poster bears the disturbing tagline, “Time didn’t heal anything,...

Amazon's Fourth Wing TV show continues to be a highly anticipated project. With so much hype surrounding The Empyrean Series' previously published books, and a third book on the way, it seems Amazon is guaranteed success with its adaptation. However, not all fantasy book-to-screen adaptations have been as lucky—with many popular fantasy series in the past having been scrapped too early. And just last year, Netflix made the decision to cancel its popular Shadow & Bone adaptation.
Shadow & Bone was based on Leigh Bardugo's best-selling Grishaverse novels—creating a large scope of world-building and hope for future series spinoffs. But while the series was incredibly popular among fans, Shadow & Bone ultimately joined a list of several canceled Netflix shows. The loss of the show was incredibly upsetting, and its early cancelation left for a lot of untapped potential within the fantasy space. While the show deserved another chance,...

Outlander season 7, part 2, is bringing back one of its previous characters, teasing the perfect opportunity for a massive twist ending. This next installment in the Starz series will be the final step before Claire and Jamie's story comes to a close in season 8, but that isn't to say that Outlander is done shocking audiences. If anything, the potential for surprises is even higher for this next season and a half since the Outlander book series by Diana Gabaldon has not yet been finished. Starz's writers are on their own deciding how the tale will end, and it could be pretty shocking.
Going into the second half of Outlander, the story still aligns with Gabaldon's An Echo in the Bone and Written in My Own Heart's Blood. It's been teased that Claire and Jamie will successfully arrive in Scotland, but Claire will be called back to the American colonies to perform her duties as a surgeon.

When it comes to the greatest years in film, 1999 is tough to beat. Personally, I remember it as the year which made me serious about the art of film, as I was just finishing high school at the time, and had begun to go see movies on my own more often. This was the year I got to see movies like Three Kings, Fight Club, Being John Malkovich, The Insider, Magnolia, Any Given Sunday and so many more theatrically, and it’s a year I’ll always look back at fondly.
What’s interesting to me is which movies have had the most staying power. If you were around back then, you’ll remember that the most anticipated movie of the year was Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. While a hit, it was totally overshadowed by The Matrix, which came out on Easter Weekend that year, and...

The brutal Troglodytes in Bone Tomahawk shocked me while ensuring I'd never forget the movie. Bone Tomahawk's story is often overshadowed by its horrifying death scene, but it is one of the best Kurt Russell Western movies, even when it shifts from a Western to a horror. The movie starts as a typical Western might, with stolen loot and a mysterious arrow wound. However, the town sheriff gets a dire warning from a Native American character known as The Professor, who has identified the arrow as belonging to a dangerous cannibal tribe known as the Troglodytes.
The characters in Bone Tomahawk are well-written Western tropes, including a gunslinger, an enthusiastic deputy, and a town hero - Sheriff Franklin Hunt, played by Kurt Russell. While many Westerns have historically cast Native American characters as antagonists, Bone Tomahawk veers away from this stereotype by making its Native American character an educated man and its villains almost monsters.

The main romance in Fourth Wing is the perfect replacement for audiences who love this similar 12-year-old book ship. One of the biggest draws of Fourth Wing and, by extension, The Empyrean Series is the complex relationship between its main characters. Violet and Xaden's relationship is one of both passion and struggle, as the two navigate their mutual attraction and individual issues. Even so, Violet and Xaden's relationship in Onyx Storm will likely become both more complicated and even stronger as they come together to defend Navarre.
After Xaden's transformation into a venin, it is likely that the two will set a lot of their differences aside, strengthening their chemistry as they focus on a common goal and Xaden opens up more to Violet emotionally. The success of modern Western movies like Bone Tomahawk, The Revenant, The Hateful Eight, and Django Unchained have led to a renewed interest in the Western movie genre. Westerns were immensely popular until the 1970s when, potentially due to fewer original ideas, Western movies had a dip in popularity. However, they've not disappeared entirely, as several Hollywood actors and filmmakers have found great success in exploring the Wild Wild West on the big screen. Among the many contemporary actors to deliver quality Westerns in recent years is Kurt Russell.

Our volatile relationships with antiheroes were suddenly under a microscope, as Dexter analyzed blood spatter at crime scenes while setting up his next victim — those he believed weren’t meted the appropriate dose of justice.

He was first revisited with a Showtime original series, Dexter: New Blood, in 2021. If the original series ending didn’t satisfy, Dexter: New Blood proved equally as divisive. Yet, still, we tune in.

He was first revisited with a Showtime original series, Dexter: New Blood, in 2021. If the original series ending didn’t satisfy, Dexter: New Blood proved equally as divisive. Yet, still, we tune in.

The Dexter universe continues to grow. Fresh off the heels of a sequel series, the hit Showtime series is gearing up for a prequel, titled Dexter: Original Sin, that will explore the early days of the titular character's life. As the name suggests, it dives into the start of the character's urge to kill, and it takes place 15 years before the events of the original series. Original Sin will detail how Harry, Dexter's dad, helped him adapt his code of only killing people who deserve it. It will also include new original characters, with Sarah Michelle Gellar and Patrick Dempsey both playing big roles in Original Sin as revealed in newly-released images.
Dexter will no longer be played by Michael C. Hall, something to be expected considering it's a prequel set more than a decade in the past, but he is still narrating it. Stepping into the future serial killer's...

We're coming up on the second half of the seventh season of Outlander, Starz's epic time-traveling romance. New episodes start dropping on November 22. After that, there's only one more season to go before the series wraps up for good.
But how will it all end? If you're hoping that Diana Gabaldon's Outlander books hold the answer, you're out of luck. For one thing, she's unlikely to have published the tenth and final book in her series, which does not yet have a title, by the time Outlander season 8 premieres on Starz next year. Responding to comments on Facebook, Gabaldon clarified that she's given the producers "a synopsis and pieces for dialogue," but they don't have the full book. And considering that season 8 is already shooting, it's too late to get it.

Master of horror Stephen King recently came out to share his praise for the 2015 Western horror film Bone Tomahawk, starring Kurt Russell. It is the debut by S. Craig Zahler with a chilling narrative whereby an aging sheriff leads a posse to rescue abducted townsfolk from a cannibalistic Native American clan.
In a glowing review on social media, King called the film "well worth watching," praising its depth and gripping dialogue. The point he drives home here is that the genre mix between Western and horror created a dedicated cult following for the movie with a modest budget and limited theatrical release.

Warning: Spoilers for the final book in the Grishaverse trilogy, Ruin and Rising.
Alina's ending in the Shadow & Bone trilogy was close to perfect, but ultimately disappointing for many readers. Alina deserved better than losing her powers and ending up with Mal - her story felt incomplete and underwhelming. Alina and Mal fading into obscurity after the trilogy was a letdown, especially compared to other characters' continued presence.
Even though the Shadow and Bone book trilogy ended almost 10 years ago, I'm still not over its ending or what happened to Alina. It's hard to overstate how quickly I fell in love with the Shadow and Bone trilogy and the Grishaverse Leigh Bardugo created. Considering she's sold millions of copies and Netflix made a Shadow and Bone show based on the books, I'm not the only one. Warning: This list contains spoilers for Leigh Bardugo's Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom novels.
The Shadow and Bone TV show never completed Six of Crows' storylines due to its cancellation. Essential members of Kaz's crew are introduced, but they are never all working together at once. The official six members of the "Six of Crows" are Kaz, Inej, Jesper, Nina, Matthias, and Wylan.
Netflix's canceled Shadow and Bone TV show never had the time to complete the story of Kaz Brekker's (Freddy Carter) crew, the title characters of Leigh Bardugo's Six of Crows. Shadow and Bone loosely follows the plot of Bardugo's Shadow and Bone novel trilogy. She later wrote the spinoff Six of Crows, focusing on new characters in the same world. However, the Shadow and Bone TV show adaptation alters the timeline so some Six of Crows events happen alongside the Shadow and Bone plot.

It’s always complicated looking at the early stuff. Especially when “the early stuff” hasn’t been publicly available for a few decades, and was very much a trial run for the later stuff, which used a lot of the same elements and ideas in a more coherent, consistent way.
That’s why it took until 2024 for Thorn: The Complete Proto-Bone College Strips 1982-1986 to be published; Jeff Smith knew that as well as anyone, and Bone, even now, is his major work, the core of his resume, and probably still his largest source of income. Add that to any creator’s standard disinterest at looking back at juvenilia, and this is work that could easily have stayed moldering in a vault indefinitely, only to roll out in some posthumous Complete Works or similar exercise.

Lava for Good co-founders Jason Flom and Jeff Kempler, along with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Gilbert King, will partner with Oscar-winning film and television producer Cathy Schulman’s Welle Entertainment and Primary Wave Music to develop and produce a multi-season scripted television series inspired by Lava for Good’s award-winning podcast Bone Valley. Veteran screenwriter and TV producer Dana Stevens will adapt.
Written and hosted by King along with producer and researcher Kelsey Decker, the show chronicles the chilling story of Leo Schofield, the Central Florida man who was wrongfully convicted and imprisoned for killing his wife, Michelle. Schofield has spent over three decades in prison — even after another incarcerated man, Jeremy Scott, confessed in detail to the crime. The attention that King and the podcast have brought to the case was cited in Schofield’s most recent parole hearing in May of 2023, which resulted in Schofield being transferred to the Everglades Re-Entry Center.

This year celebrates 25 years since the final year of the 1900’s. A year that brought about such classics as The Matrix, Fight Club, American Pie, and Office Space as well as my personal favorite movie of all time: Arlington Road. The year was so successful that 20 years later it would inspire a book titled Best Movie Year Ever.
With a vast cannon of films ranging from highly anticipated block busting prequels (Star Wars: Episode 1- The Phantom Menace) to that years’ eventual Best Picture winner American Beauty and a movie that changed the meaning of twist endings forever (The Sixth Sense) 1999 truly was a year for the ages.

Quick Links When Does Shadow and Bone Take Place? Where Is Shadow and Bone Set?
Like many great fantasy shows, Shadow and Bone drew fans in with its detailed, expansive world. Aside from the conflict between the Grisha and non-powered people, there were also multiple countries at war with each other and fascinating locales around the globe. The Shadow and Bone map was prominently featured in both seasons, helping fans visualize where the different sets of characters were in relation to each other at various points throughout the story. It was also an effective way to show the true scope of the adventure, with Mal, Alina and the Crows traveling great distances on their respective journeys. As such, it's no surprise that newcomers to the Grishaverse would want to know more about the setting.

“Mare of Easttown” Emmy winner Kate Winslet is back at HBO — this time as a European authoritarian ruler under heaps of pressure, and crumbling because of it.
HBO has released another trailer for its upcoming series “The Regime,” headed for the premium TV network on March 3, 2024. Oscar nominee Stephen Frears (“The Queen”) and Jessica Hobbs (an Emmy-winning director on “The Crown”) direct the series showrun by Will Tracy.
“The Regime” tells the story of one year within the walls of the palace of a modern European regime as it begins to unravel. Along with Winslet, the cast includes Belgian “Rust and Bone” heartthrob Matthias Schoenaerts, Guillaume Gallienne, surprise 2023 Best Actress Academy Award nominee Andrea Riseborough, Martha Plimpton, and, a usual suspect for this sort of lofty Euro political fare, Hugh Grant. The trailer suggests layers of moneyed darkness a la “Succession” with a dash of Armando Iannucci “Veep” satire to match the drama.

A Mistborn movie could bring the thrilling magic heist tale to life, setting it apart from other heist stories in Hollywood. While it won't make up for the show's cancellation, a Mistborn movie can tell the story that a short-lived Netflix series never will. Despite the disappointment of this cancellation, a Mistborn movie adaptation offers hope for more fantasy heist stories in Hollywood.
