Hello, dear readers! Today, we here at Daily Dead are kicking off our 2022 Indie Horror Month celebration, and we have a ton of killer content coming your way throughout the entire month of April that will highlight some amazing indie genre goodness created by an assortment of maverick makers from both the past and present. And for our first official piece for Ihm 2022, I thought it made sense to take a look at one of the most pivotal decades in independent horror cinema: the 1970s.
While we’ve had plenty of brilliant indie horror released here in America throughout every decade (it’s worth noting that the roots of independent horror can even be traced back 100 years to the release of F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu), there were certainly several key figures who were busy making horror movies on their own terms prior to the ’70s that helped pave the way...

In an inspired bit of holiday season counter-programming, the Quad Cinema in New York is showing 34 non-family films that were either rated X or should have been. In the U.K. the X rating was first introduced in 1951 when it originally indicated “suitable for those aged 16 and over” and replaced the H for Horror rating that had existed since 1932. In 1972 the age was raised to 18 (and ten years later the certificate changed from X to 18). A surprising number of arthouse classics such as Jules and Jim and a number of Bergman films received an X rating in the U.K.In the U.S. the X rating was introduced in 1968 as part of Jack Valenti’s new MPAA rating system, and Midnight Cowboy became not only one of the first films to receive the rating, but was the only X-rated film ever to win Best Picture. For some filmmakers and...

The week I saw Fetish Factory, the new feature from writer/director Staci Layne Wilson, I also rewatched Anna Biller’s The Love Witch and Hillary Clinton lost her chance to be the first female president of the United States. I was very much in the mindset of seeing art through a specific prism of gender politics and sexism, which may have colored my reading of the movie. At the same time, I don’t know if that’s true. This is a movie with gender politics very much on its mind. You don’t make a movie about the male customers of a sex fetish club being turned into bloodthirsty zombies without wanting to say something about the relationship between men and women.

There are few absolutes in life, let alone in the world of horror; but this I find to be true: Herschell Gordon Lewis was appreciated in his time. Beloved, actually. Sadly passing away on September 26th, 2016 at the age of 87, he left behind a slew of grindhouse classics encapsulating everything from biker flicks to sex ed pieces. But Hgl will be forever known for a string of unique and groundbreaking horror films including The Gore Gore Girls (1972), his last opus before he took a 30 year sabbatical from filmmaking. And on the Hgl spectrum, it’s one of his best.
If you’re familiar at all with “The Godfather of Gore” (a moniker he wore as a point of pride) but haven’t seen The Gore Gore Girls, the differences between this and say, Blood Feast (1963), his first splatter extravaganza, are minimal. Made for a pittance of 63 grand, Ggg has all...

Herschell Gordon Lewis, the so-called "Godfather of Gore" who is widely credited with inventing the "splatter" sub-genre, has died. He was 87. During his brief career as a writer, director and producer of low-budget exploitation films, Lewis achieved infamy with titles like Blood Feast, Two Thousand Maniacs! and The Wizard of Gore, the first of which is generally considered the first "splatter" film and was so reviled by critics on release in 1963 that Variety deemed it "an insult even to the most puerile and salacious of audiences." Nonetheless, the film's boundary-pushing nature made it a huge hit with audiences, leading to a new acceptance of onscreen gore and paving the way for more artful filmmakers like Tobe Hooper, Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson. Born June 15, 1929 in Pittsburgh, Lewis earned a master's degree in Journalism at Northwestern University and had a varied early career, working alternately as a college professor, TV commercial director and voiceover artist.

Herschell Gordon Lewis, a horror icon long known as the “Godfather of Gore,” has passed away of unspecified causes at 87. He was best known for innovating the “splatter” subgenre with 1963’s “Blood Feast,” which Lewis made on a $24,500 budget partly as a response to “Psycho” — he wanted to show the act of murder on film in graphic detail, not just the aftermath. Something Weird Video broke the news on Facebook.

Pardon the blasphemy, but Jesus H. Christ, who the hell decided it would be a good idea to release Ted V. Mikels Worst film on DVD? The bigger question would be why the hell did I decide to even review this film? If it ranks as one of the worst Ted V. I asked myself that question throughout each and every painful minute of this film…

We’re playing catch-up here on Nerdly – after a busy 2 weeks prepping for and then attending this years Frightfest there’s a number of weekly-release reviews to bring you up to speed on. So here they are, reviews of The Cabin, Blood Orgy of the She Devils and The Longest Week.
The Cabin
Another one of those straight to DVD films that make up 99% of the horror films on sale at supermarkets, with the same generic cover art and shiny slipcase, The Cabin is destined to get mixed up with all the other cabin/lodge/house movies on the market when, in fact, it doesn’t deserve to – this film has little to do with the titular abode and more to do with the main characters bloodline (the original title of the movie) and his relationship with his faith.

‘The Lost Films of Herschell Gordon Lewis’ Collection Reveals the X-Rated Side of the Wizard of Gore
It’s not uncommon for film directors to find themselves categorized into a specific niche, but it’s almost always interesting (and occasionally fun) to see their attempts at operating outside those expectations. Herschell Gordon Lewis‘ career has seen him work in all manner of genres, but the perception of him as “the wizard of gore” remains. Films like Blood Feast, Two Thousand Maniacs, Color Me Blood Red, The Gore Gore Girls and others have made H.G. Lewis synonymous with goofy, technicolor blood baths. But he also had a softer, dirtier side made evident through a series of T&A films produced both before and after his horror flicks. Fans are aware of most of them, but three were thought lost to history… until now. Vinegar Syndrome is a brand spanking new specialty label, and their debut release is as important and well-crafted as any label could hope for. The Lost Films of Herschell Gordon Lewis collects...

Certain types of film fans love a bit of depravity with their popcorn, and for that very reason, I have scoured the rancid bowels of my mind to bring you these cinematic catastrophes to delight in, be repulsed with, or be morally incensed by – whatever tickles your fancy. Needless to say, if Mary Whitehouse was alive, she would probably spontaneously combust reading this.
Quite frankly, I am bored of perusing lists of controversial films with Salo, Cannibal Holocaust and Last House on the Left on them. They are highly commendable films but they have been discussed to death. The films on this list go deeper in their degree of sleaziness, depravity and nastiness and they are lesser known which makes the list that little bit more spicy. And we can all do with a little spice in our lives – even if it leaves a bitter, pungent taste…. Just like these movies do.

Herschell Gordon Lewis, who consistently pushed the boundaries of low budget and good taste in horror with motion pictures like Blood Feast, Two Thousand Maniacs and The Gore Gore Girls also dabbled in films meant to cheaply play on your sensual side. Now, Vinegar Syndrome releases The Lost Films Of Herschell Gordon Lewis, a two-disc Blu-ray/DVD combo package that features the aforementioned sexploitation films, restored from their negatives and having never looked so good (see the trailer below for a peek at the upgrade).
Inside you’ll see
• The Ecstasies Of Women: a torrid comedy/drama set in the swinging world of late 60s Los Angeles.
• Linda And Abilene, which combines the savagery of a classic Hollywood western with sequences if intense eroticism.
• Black Love exposes the lovemaking habits of the contemporary black couple through a series of amusing and creative vignettes.
The films are accompanied by liner notes and original trailers.

If you've been around The 'Bid for a minute, you may remember the original announcement I made while Blood Orgy At Beaver Lake was still in production. Several days ago, I received a package from Silver Bullet Pictures, and was delighted to find a copy of Blood Orgy inside. I didn't even wait to pop it in and watch it. If you like to partake in the use of a particular substance which can be considered medicinal in certain states with the proper…...

Something Weird’s Blu-ray release of Herschell Gordon Lewis’ Blood Trilogy last year was a minor revelation. Synopsis: Lorraine and Mark enter the world of witchcraft where Mara foretells the future and helps them remember their past lives. When a series of mysterious murders begin to occur, they turn to Dr. Helsford fort advice. Review: I’m going to make an observation from watching “Blood Orgy of the She-Devils”, this movie is ripe for a remake and it could actually be pretty damn good if it was done properly. As the film stands, it is a ridiculous mess. The story is thin, acting is rotten, the effects could have been done on a Commodore 64, and the title has no relation to the story. So keep in mind that there are no blood orgies and no she-devils. It’s kind of sad if you think about it. This is one of those movies that have been on my radar for quite some time and just never made my...

Near the end of Friday night's screening of Herschell Gordon Lewis - The Godfather of Gore, right at the point where the villain of The Gore Gore Girls takes a meat tenderizer and a salt shaker to a woman's behind, my viewing companion turned to me and said that she had to wait outside until the film was over. This is someone who had sat with me through Fantasia film after Fantasia film for years, through the most disgusting blood and guts epics, and now she had reached her limit in the celebration of the entrepreneurial gorehound. I can't say that I blame her. The work of Herschell Gordon Lewis is a strange and often overlooked chapter in the history of American horror, and there's something that still grabs the viewer in his depictions of mayhem inflicted upon the female body. Seeing the unconvincing violence in the context of such...

Michael Weldon of "Psychotronic Magazine" praised this movie's awfulness to me almost 30 years ago, and I only caught up with it this week.
The Children concerns the ghastly events that occur after a school bus drives through a noxious cloud of gas...which is exactly how Richard Matheson got The Incredible Shrinking Man going, so it's not a bad start. There are only a few kids on the bus, luckily (I'm surprised the filmmakers got any parents to trust them with their kids -- but then, half the kids in this film have the same last name as the producer). I'm going to have to provide some spoilers here because the movie is so bad and so poorly paced that no one will watch it through without a damn good reason. These kids, though normal looking, become radioactive zombies with an impulse to approach any adults with arms outstretched, begging for hugsies!

In another unpublished interview from the archives, Australian contributor Lee Gambin sits down for a little one-on-one with Herschell Gordon Lewis - a Fango fav, and always a source of great conversation. This interview has been abridged for posting here.
Lee Gambin/Fangoria: What initially got you stated in the movie making business?
H.G. Lewis: I owned a commercial film studio in Chicago, including 35mm movie equipment. The big advertising agencies were sending all the important and profitable jobs to California. One day I was complaining about this, and a friend asked, "How do you make any money in your business?" I answered sardonically without thinking: "The only way to make money in the movie business is to make features." That, like a virus, took hold in my brain.
What attracted you to gore and the 'splatter' picture?
As an independent with limited financial and distributional resources, the challenge...

Welcome to Gore Girls! MTV contributor Terri Schwartz doesn't know crap about the horror genre, and she's volunteered to be our Movies Blog guinea pig. She has a good guide too. Fellow contributor Jenni Miller is a bonafide horror enthusiast, and she's willing to walk Terri through her formative experiences with blood, guts, monsters and maniacs. Together, this dynamic duo are The Gore Girls!!! Good luck Terri... you're definitely going to need it.

Over the past few weeks, Fangoria Entertainment has been gearing up new websites for a few of our other magazines and projects. You'll see links to some of them in the left-hand menu on the homepage of this site, and today we'd like to take a moment to point you in the direction of both Starlog® and Gorezone®.
Below the jump you'll find details on both sites, along with links to some great exclusive features that you may not have gotten a chance to read yet.
Gorezone® is the official site for the relaunch of our sister mag (originally published from 1988-1993, read the History of Gz here). The Gz site is intended for mature audiences only (18+) and you will be prompted to enter your birthdate upon entry.
