PBS Kids is taking a page out of Schoolhouse Rock with a new series that aims to boost civics education.
A new video, Let’s Vote, debuted last week and pays homage to David Bowie’s Let’s Dance.
The series is called City Island Sings! and is led by Kimia Behpoornia of Abbott Elementary and Kimiko Glenn of Orange Is The New Black. PBS Kids partnered with Augenblick Studios’ Future Brain Media for the project. The songs are written and performed by Tunde Adebimpe, lead singer of TV on the Radio, with guest performers and paying homage to Johnny Cash, The Beatles, Devo, Dua Lipa and others.
The first season will include 10 music videos, with others tied to appreciation of school workers and diversity of communities, among other topics. The visuals pay tribute to artists like Mary Blair, Keith Haring and Roy Lichtenstein, as well as the visual inspiration of Sesame Street.

This post was originally published in July 2023. We’ve updated it to coincide with “Sex and the City” coming to Netflix April 1.
Seasons change, and so do cities. One thing that doesn’t? Fans’ enduring love for “Sex and the City,” the HBO comedy that premiered in 1998.
Endlessly spoofed but also deeply, earnestly loved by millions (there are honestly very fun location tours in NYC running several times a week) the groundbreaking series wrapped its original six-season, 94-episode run in 2004, with a not-terrible, not-great 2008 feature film and a truly terrible sequel following in 2010. In 2021, spinoff series “And Just Like That” — without Kim Cattrall’s iconic Samantha Jones — premiered on Max (née HBO Max). A second season of “And Just Like That” began airing in June 2023, following the misadventures of a 50-something Carrie, Charlotte, and Miranda. The spinoff show has received mixed reviews from fans and critics — the less said about Che Diaz,...

Wannabe Trump-tator
With Donald Trump now the lone Republican candidate left in the presidential race, late-night hosts are leaping to keep the former President’s most alarming statements in the public eye by amplifying some of Trump’s most disqualifying statements when it comes to holding the highest office in the land.
Armed with recent quotes from Trump administration officials like former Secretary of Defense Mark Esper relating how Trump inquired about ordering the National Guard to shoot Black Lives Matter protesters, Jon Stewart interpreted Trump’s position on the Constitution as, “Well, there can still be freedom to assemble. The assembly’d just be more of a pile.”
[On Trump’s claim to ‘absolute immunity’ with regard to his actions while in office, including theoretically murdering political enemies] “I don’t want to be a nitpicker, but I do not remember the assassination episode of Schoolhouse Rock.

This article contains spoilers for all seven episodes of I’m a Virgo.
There’s a lot going on in I’m a Virgo, Boots Riley’s seven-episode series on Prime Video. The mere premise of the show itself – that of a 13-foot tall young Black man from Oakland finding himself – is a lot to unpack. And that’s before the Sorry to Bother You filmmaker begins to introduce other elements of magical realism.
Cootie’s (Jharrel Jerome) journey to self discovery features: a cult cartoon called Parking Tickets that has the potential to drive people insane, a billionaire comic book writer who becomes his own fascist creation called The Hero (Walton Goggins), and of course: plenty of revolutionary labor politics.
All of those disparate threads come to a head in the I’m a Virgo finale in which Cootie and friends have sabotaged a power facility in a fruitless attempt at...

Like any good science documentary, “Human Nature” starts with a hypothesis. The filmmakers posit that audiences are bored by the dry format of most science docs, but that there is a better strategy for presenting complex concepts about biology in a way that both educates and entertains. That’s hardly a novel idea, dating back at least as far as Walt Disney’s “True-Life Adventure” series and advanced by everything from Imax to “Schoolhouse Rock!” over the years. Still, the team behind “Human Nature” are innovating with adult viewers in mind, and to test their theory, they’ve taken a subject that’s getting lots of attention but only limited understanding: Crispr.
It’s a smart hook on which to hang what could be the first of many such features for the Wonder Collaborative, since the discovery of Crispr — a catchy name for a microscopic phenomenon, which describes repeating DNA...

Bob Dorough, the jazz musician who was instrumental in the 1970s educational cartoon series “Schoolhouse Rock!” died Monday in Mt. Bethel, Pennsylvania, a spokesperson for Dorough told TheWrap. He was 94.
During his run with “Schoolhouse Rock!” Dorough wrote and performed iconic numbers including “My Hero, Zero” and “Three Is a Magic Number.”
Dorough, born in Arkansas and raised in Texas, took to music early, joining his high school’s band and serving three years in a special services army band unit.

Dorough was a conductor, accompany player, arranger and conductor for a number of years before recording his first effort of his own, “Devil May Care,” in 1956 for the Bethlehem label. Among the artists Dorough worked with was Miles Davis, recording “Nothing Like You” and “Blue Xmas,” both of which Dorough composed, with Davis in 1962.
“In 1971 he received a commission to ‘set the multiplication tables to music.’ This led to a small industry, being the beginning of ABC-tv’s ‘Schoolhouse Rock,’ Saturday morning cartoons that entertained and instructed unsuspecting children during the years 1973-1985,” Dorough’s biography reads.

The bio adds, “The impact of this media exposure was unpredictably immense. The show came back for another five years in the 90’s and is now enjoying its 40th anniversary with a DVD edition of the entire, five-subject series, for which Dorough worked as the Musical Director.”
In 1995, Dorough signed with the prestigious Blue Note Records label, recording three CDs — “Right on My Way Home,” “Too Much Coffee Man” and “Who’s On First” — for the label.

“As much as I love the Fourth of July, shouldn’t the real independence day be the real day everybody was free?” Dre reasons in black-ish‘s Season 4 premiere. Then, with an argument that’s pretty hard to refute, the ABC comedy points out exactly how much black people have done for the United States of America — and how little acknowledgement they’ve received in return.
After stewing in the audience at Jack and Diane’s school play — a dramatic, sanitized retelling of Columbus’ arrival in America — Dre makes a scene that brings the production to a halt. “I can...

In Cameron Diaz, “Saturday Night Live” has its second consecutive host making an appearance after a lengthy absence. Although Diaz has hosted the show three times before, this is her first time doing so since 2005. Will there be “Annie” sketches? Probably! Will there be a Jamie Foxx and/or Quvenzhané Wallis cameo? Possibly! Will Bruno Mars make an in-sketch appearance in addition to his musical role tonight? Likely! Will this be an exciting episode or one that puts audiences to sleep faster than Thanksgiving dinner? Who knows! As always, I’ll be liveblogging the show in real time, assigning grades to each segment. As always, I’ll remind you that comedy is subjective and the grades don’t have any more power than you allow them to have. As always, a few of you will ignore that last statement and quibble over a “B-“ versus a “B”. It’s cool.

Has Sjp's role as Kira Supernova in Escape From Planet Earth fostered a belief in aliens? Is it the best-named character she has ever played? And is she sick of being asked about Sex and the City 3?
Hello Sarah. Is Escape From Planet Earth your first animated movie?
I think it's the first full-length theatrical release. I don't recall any more, to be honest. I've probably done short-form voice stuff before. (1)
And this is your third space-themed movie.
It is? Remind me.
Well, there was Flight of the Navigator, and then Mars Attacks!
Ah, yes, you're right. I seem to be drawn to the genre, even though I don't even remember that I am.
In some ways, would you see this as the completion of a trilogy?
Oh my God, I love that you're looking at it with such a scholarly approach. Yes! Let's pretend that that's exactly why I did it.

In March of 1998, Robert Smigel's popular "TV Funhouse" cartoon segment on "Saturday Night Live" featured one particularly political short called "Conspiracy Theory Rock!". In it, corporations like Ge and Fox were depicted as a "media-opoly," and their cartoon figureheads devoured smaller news companies in a scathing "School House Rock" parody (a controversial move at the time, considering Ge owned NBC).
It only aired once, and was pulled from both syndication and the DVD collections because it "wasn't funny," according to "SNL" creator and producer Lorne Michaels.
The clip was all but forgotten until comedian Marc Maron tweeted a link to the video Tuesday, and it has since gone viral as a "banned" clip. While the segment wasn't technically outlawed, it certainly is a rarity in the "SNL" canon, and one that resonates today in the age of "Really, Fox News?".

Well the Hollywood suck fest is over and in another unremarkable year of film there is a lot to say about about snubs, flubs and much more in my post Oscar analysis/recap of the 83rd Academy Awards. This year’s Oscars were hosted by James Franco and Anne Hathaway, an attempt to capture interest from younger audiences while making sure they got people who had been to the Academies before and know what it is all about. While the whole show itself was sort of a snore fest, the interest from filmgoers this year was would a film about social media win? would a movie about dreams take the cake? and could a ballerina win an Academy award too?
The Hosts – I for one enjoyed the hosts this year much more than Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin last year and Hugh Jackman the years before. Bob Hope and Billy Crystal...

“Washington is like Hollywood, only without the pretty faces.” This, according to Kevin Spacey’s idealistic, wise-cracking super-lobbyist Jack Abramoff on the two-faced, backstabbing nature of capitol hill.
In 2006, Abramoff, who, by many accounts, was one of the most powerful men in Washington, pled guilty to defrauding four American Indian tribes of tens of millions of dollars, and to illegal dealings with SunCruz Casinos. His indictment led to a widespread corruption investigation that resulted in the convictions of top White House officials, U.S. Representative Bob Ney, and nine other lobbyists and Congressional aides, shaking the right-wing establishment to its core. And George Hickenlooper’s “Casino Jack” aims to tell the tale.
Spacey charges into the role full force, attacking the essence and nuances of his character with all the voracity and gusto with which Abramoff himself laid waste to the idea of ethics in politics. After twice winning Hollywood’s most coveted acting award,...

It’s amazing how with one DVD collection my mind can flashback to all the forgotten memories of 80’s cartoons that I had long since forgotten. Everyone remembers Thundercats, Transformers, Gijoe, and He-Man; but how many of you remember that Chuck Norris had a cartoon or Mr. T or that there was a whole Flintstone spin-off about Fred and Barney as kids? I had completely blocked all these gloriously goofy episodes of obscure cartoon nostalgia from my brain, until I popped this DVD collection in. Some of the cartoons still hold up after all these years, while others are a bit painful to watch as an adult. Which ones? Guess you’ll have to read more…
What cartoons are in this collection? Let’s get into that first. This set includes: Goldie Gold and Action Jack, Chuck Norris: Karate Commandos, The Completely Mental Misadventures of Ed Grimley, The Flintstone Kids,...

As Eric Forman on That 70’s Show, Topher Grace never showed a dark side. He was always the good son and audiences responded to his character and the rest of the cast by tuning in for eight seasons. Since wrapping the show, Grace starred in Spider-Man 3 as Eddie Brock / Venom and we finally got to see a bit more of what he can do. Cut to present day, Grace is going to push what audiences expect from him as he’s one of the stars of director Nimrod Antal’s Predators.
Last December, 20th Century Fox invited a few online folks to the Austin, Texas set and we got to speak with Topher Grace about being in Predators and working with the rest of the talented cast. He talked to us about his character, how it compared to Spider-Man 3, and how a lot of the effects were in-camera.
