Amid the “wonderful gift” of six Golden Globe nominations this morning for Conclave, his acclaimed papal thriller for Focus Features, filmmaker Edward Berger got candid about his upcoming slate and the thought process that’s informed his career trajectory.
Most notably, Berger spoke about The Barrier, his time travel film starring Austin Butler, which just landed at 20th Century Studios in a competitive situation, as we were first to report. He called the short story of the same name by MacMillan Hedges, on which it’s based, “a perfect construct for a blockbuster, while having a character at the center of it that has the biggest motivation and the biggest journey that you need for a movie that I could think of.
“So that makes a great mixture,” said Berger. “It’s not only commercially super interesting, and theatrically big and explosive, a movie that can get people to the theaters,...

According to Senior Marvel Editor Tom Brevoort, he once emphatically refused to follow through on a creative decision from above, in which the publisher decreed that a pregnant Mary Jane Parker would suffer a miscarriage at the end of a dramatic Spider-Man arc. Had he not drawn a line in the sand, the often-maligned One More Day storyline from a decade later may have had an even more controversial precedent.
On his Substack, Brevoort revealed his role in stopping the plot in its tracks. Spider-Man: The Last Adventure written by Fabian Nicieza, with art by Darick Robertson was a four-issue miniseries released between late 1995 and early 1996. As the title suggested, the storyline was conceived of as Peter Parker's final outing as the Webslinger.
Brevoort's unwillingness to end The Last Adventure with Mary Jane losing the baby led to the arc ending on an uncertain note; sadly, the story of Mj's pregnancy did end in tragedy,...

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is now officially touted as 'his last adventure' in two new promotional videos.
Posted on YouTube, the shorter clip runs about thirty seconds and features rousing scenes from the film, heavily focusing on its hero and new character Helena Shaw played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. It is accompanied by the series' characteristic musical queues and contains text inserts promising, "His last adventure is his greatest." The longer clip, running 1:39 minutes and titled 'The Last Adventure,' includes interview snippets from director James Mangold, star Harrison Ford, Waller-Bridge and producer Kathleen Kennedy, who ponders, "We asked ourselves, what could be the next adventure, and in this case, it was, what could be the last adventure?"

Spanish-born fashion designer Paco Rabanne, who was best known for his metallic space-age outfits, has died in France at the age of 88 years old.
The self-taught designer broke into the Parisian Haute Couture scene in the early 1960s with a collection composed of 12 unwearable experimental metallic dresses.
His designs soon became favorites with stars and models of the time such as France’s Anouk Aimée, Françoise Hardy, Brigitte Bardot and the U.K.’s Twiggy.
He soon connected with the cinema world, designing the iconic costumes for Jane Fonda in Roger Vadim’s 1968 cult film Barbarella, which are still on display in MoMA in New York.
Other cinema credits included Roberto Enrico’s The Last Adventure and Joël Le Moigné’s Les Ponyettes.
Rabanne also created individual pieces for Jean-Luc Godard’s 1967 drama Two Or Three Things I Know About Her…, Stanley Donen’s Two For The Road and John Huston’s Casino Royale.
Rabanne retired in 1999 but his mothballed label was revived by Spanish company Puig in 2011, which relaunched it as a fashion house and fragrance business that it now controls.
“The House of Paco Rabanne wishes to honour our visionary designer and founder who passed away today at the age of 88,” the company said in a statement posted on its website.
“Among the most seminal fashion figures of the 20th century, his legacy will remain a constant source of inspiration.”...

Director Edward Berger and producer Malte Grunert are set to follow up their new adaption of Erich Maria Remarque’s harrowing war novel “All Quiet on the Western Front” with a much more upbeat work, a remake of the rollicking 1967 French-Italian pic “The Last Adventure,” which starred Alain Delon, Lino Ventura and Joanna Shimkus.
Grunert and Berger had been working on the remake and were already in development when “All Quiet on the Western Front,” which makes its world premiere at the Toronto fest Sept. 12, came along.
They are now planning to return to the project after Berger finishes his next pic, the Vatican-set thriller “Conclave,” based on the Robert Harris novel and set to star Ralph Fiennes, John Lithgow, Stanley Tucci and Isabella Rossellini. Berger goes into prep on “Conclave” in October in Rome, with production scheduled to start in January.

Hubert Cornfield’s smoothly directed, moody kidnapping story is mysterious, engaging and well acted, but opts for an anti-thriller vibe with a curiously unsatisfying ending. Was this really the plan, or did the irksomely capricious Marlon Brando just not want to cooperate with the director? Brando is terrific anyway. The well-cast Rita Moreno, Richard Boone and Pamela Franklin are short-changed by directorial and editorial decisions that don’t give us enough of a purchase on the characters. The overcast weather on the French coast is a plus, but not the director’s choice of a downbeat, arty finish.

If there was anytime I felt more conflicted about writing “woo-oo” in my life, it would be today. We already knew DuckTales was coming to a close but we didn’t know how it would end. Would we get one new episode a week for weeks? Would they air them all in a row? Well, Disney just released the info and it wasn’t quite what we expected.
DuckTales will return on February 22, 2021 and will air one new episode a week until March 15, 2021. On that date we’ll be getting a 90-minute series finale! That’s less than a month of new DuckTales episodes but getting a movie length finale? If the show is going to be leaving our lives, at least it’ll be leaving in style. First up, let’s take a look at the episodes leaving to the finale.

Thought #1: contact sports have given us an unusual number of fine actors. George C. Scott's nose testified to his travails in the ring, as did John Huston's. France offers Michel Simon, Jean-Paul Belmondo and Italian emigre Lino Ventura. Ventura, a former boxer and wrestler, is perhaps the least celebrated of this triumvirate, but he is beyond great. Initially typed as toughs, understandably given his squat frame and flattened menhir of a nose, he demonstrated such conviction that he could be cast as an art dealer in Montparnasse 19 and as an intellectual freedom fighter in Melville's Army of Shadows. His combination of muscle and brains makes him a perfect choice to play an engineer in—but wait...
Thought #2: It's remarkable how many truly horrible character Alain Delon has played. Impressive that he'd do that—either he's unusually interested in villainy, or directors just see him that way,...

- I'm in transit in Dortmund and haven't reached my final destination Hamburg yet. I have posters and tons of pictures to share, so bare with me. I watched my last film on Friday at 8:30 which is called INDIGÈNES about the contribution of indigenous citizens from Africa in WWII to help free France from the Nazi occupation.I left Cannes gladly and was too drained and exhausted from the town and films but I will be back next year, Inshallah - but there's no doubt that it's the best festival in the world with the whole world in one small town. The locals are nice and friendly. The food is great. The town has the best theatres in the world with the Grand Lumiere at the top with 2400 seats. Another great thing about Cannes is you can catch up some of the films from Sundance, Rotterdam and Berlin among others.
